Impact of ozonation on disinfection byproducts formation from phenylalanine during chlorination

As a strong oxidizing agent,ozone is used in some water treatment facilities for disinfection,taste and odor control,and removal of organic ***(Phe)was used as the target amino acid to comprehensively investigate variability of disinfection byproducts(DBPs)formation during chlorine disinfection and residual chlorine conditions subsequent to *** results showed that subsequent to ozonation,the typical regulated and unregulated DBPs formation potential(DBPsFP),including trichloromethane(TCM),dichloroacetonitrile(DCAN),chloral hydrate(ch),dichloroacetic acid(DCAA),trichloroacetic acid(TCAA),and trichloroacetamide(TCAcAm)increased substantially,by 2.4,3.3,5.6,1.2,2.5,and 6.0 times,respectively,compared with only *** also significantly increased the DBPs yield under a 2 day simulated residual chlorine condition that mimicked the water distribution *** formations followed pseudo first order *** formation rates of DBPs in the first 6 hr were higher for TCM(0.214 hr^(−1)),DCAN(0.244 hr^(−1)),ch(0.105 hr^(−1)),TCAcAm(0.234 hr^(−1)),DCAA(0.375 hr^(−1))and TCAA(0.190 hr^(−1))than *** peak DBPsFP of TCM,DCAN,ch,TCAcAm,DCAA,and TCAA were obtained when that ozonation time was set at 5–15 *** times>30 min increased the mineralization of Phe and decreased the formation of DBPs upon *** bromine ion(Br^(−1))concentration increased production of bromine-DBPs and decreased chlorine-DBPs formation by 59.3%–92.2%.Higher ozone dosages and slight alkaline favored to reduce DBP formation and *** ozonation conditions should be optimized for all application purposes including DBPs reduction.

Realizing the full potential of ultrahigh-intensity lasers for particle and radiation generation will require multi-beam arrangements due to technology ***,we investigate how to optimize their coupling with solid ***,we show that overlapping two intense lasers in a mirror-like configuration onto a solid with a large preplasma can greatly improve the generation of hot electrons at the target front and ion acceleration at the target *** underlying mechanisms are analyzed through multidimensional particle-in-cell simulations,revealing that the self-induced magnetic fields driven by the two laser beams at the target front are susceptible to reconnection,which is one possible mechanism to boost electron *** addition,the resistive magnetic field generated during the transport of the hot electrons in the target bulk tends to improve their *** simulations also indicate that such effects can be further enhanced by overlapping more than two laser beams.

Cancer is a major cause of death *** carcinoma(HCC)is one of the malignancies with the highest mortality-to-incidence ratio(>0.9),and in some countries this value is up to ***,many patients are diagnosed at advanced stages of the ***,HCC early markers,as well as novel therapeutic approaches,are urgently *** is the main type of liver cancer and it is associated with different factors including alcohol use,viral infections,and fatty liver disease.A significant percentage of HCC patients previously had liver *** ion channels have been proposed as novel potential markers and therapeutic targets for diverse cancers including ***,we review most of the findings associating ion channel expression with HCC and its etiological factors,as well as some possible pro-tumorigenic mechanisms of action for ion channels in *** therapies for HCC treatment and prevention are also *** channel targeting offers a plethora of opportunities for HCC prevention,early diagnosis,and therapy that may help to reduce the extremely high mortality-to-incidence ratio of this malignancy.

A Gun Is Not a Woman： Local Subjectivity in Mo Yan＇s Novel Tanxiang xing

Mo Yan＇s historical novel Sandalwood Death revisits the Boxer Uprising, exploring a local structure of feeling from the point of view of oral transmissions that, one hundred years after the events, appears gradually to e receding into oblivion. It is a project of recuperation or, rather, aesthetic reconstruction of local knowledge. The staging of a variety of local performances, such as Maoqiang opera, seasonal festivals, military and religious parades, as well as of scenes of excessive violence in executions and battle scenes, appears to be a strategy for the cultural reclamation of these local experiences. The story challenges the ingrained dualism between foreign, modern imperialist and nationalist forms of rationality, and pre-modem, local patterns of beha- viour and thought. Employing polyphony and multivalent historical represent- tations, the novel aspires to portray the social dynamics in a given geo- historical circumstances by measuring the spatiotemporal as well as the cognitive distance between the witnessed event, the testifying witness and the future receivers of the transmitted stories. Thus, the inquiry does not focus on the historical events as facts, but rather on their cultural afterlife in （founding） narratives. In times of a growing gap between the modernist vision of human liberation and the actual conditions of growing inequality, delegitimization and dispossession, this tale of unrest in the wake of globalization has as much to say about the world＇s peoples around the year 2000, when the novel was published, as about the microcosm of Shandong Gaomi County around the year 1900, when the historical events took place. Taking into account that the novel was written as a local Maoqiang opera in the making and that theatres are major providers of cultural space for the enactment of the human self as the subject of history, Sandalwood Death can perhaps best be described as a theatre of reclamation.

Palaeogeographic reconstruction of Minchin palaeolake system,South America: The influence of astronomical forcing

Current palaeoclimatic reconstructions for the R＆#237;o de la Plata region during the latest Pleistocene （30,000 e10,000 yr BP） propose dry conditions, with rainfall at the Last Glacial Maximum amounting to one-third of today＇s precipitation. Despite the consequential low primary productivity inferred, an impressive megafauna existed in the area at that time. Here we explore the influence of the flooding from a huge extinct system of water bodies in the Andean Altiplano as a likely source for wet regimes that might have increased the primary productivity and, hence, the vast number of megaherbivores. The system was reconstructed using specifically combined software resources, including Insola, Global Mapper v13, Surfer and Matlab. changes in water volume and area covered were related to climatic change, assessed through a model of astronomical forcing that describes the changes in insolation at the top of the at-mosphere in the last 50,000 yr BP. The model was validated by comparing its results with several proxies （ch4, CO2, D, 18O） from dated cores taken from the ice covering Antarctic lakes Vostok and EPICA Dome C. It is concluded that the Altiplano Lake system drained towards the southeast in the rainy seasons and that it must have been a major source of water for the Paran＆#225;-Plata Basin, consequently enhancing primary productivity within it.

Kitchen waste valorization through a mildtemperature pretreatment to enhance biogas production and fermentability:Kinetics study in mesophilic and thermophilic regimen

Biowaste valorization through anaerobic digestion is an attractive option to achieve both climate protection goals and renewable energy *** this paper,a complete set of batch trials was carried out on kitchen waste to investigate the effects of mild thermal pretreatment,temperature regimen and substrate/inoculum *** pretreatment was effective in the solubilisation of macromolecular fractions,particularly *** ability of the theoretical methodologies in estimating hydrogen and methane yields of complex substrates was evaluated by comparing the experimental results with the theoretical *** the single batch configuration,a significant initial hydrogen production was observed,prior to methane *** pretreatment effect was the gain in hydrogen production;the extent was highly variable according to the other parameters *** hydrogen yields,up to 113 mL H2/g VSfed,were related to the prompt transformation of soluble *** regimen resulted,as expected,in faster digestions(up to 78 mL ch4/gVS/day) and sorted out pH *** relatively low methane yields(342-398 mL ch4/g VSfed) were the result of the consistent lignocellulosic content and low lipid *** pretreatment proved to be a promising option for the enhancement of hydrogen production in food waste dark fermentation.

Understanding the negative thermal expansion(NTE)mechanism is of great *** this work,we consider the new NTE compound Gd Fe(CN)_(6)(α_(v)=-34.2×10^(-6)K^(-1))as a case study to investigate the NTE mechanism from the perspective of the lattice vibrational *** atomic mean-square displacements suggest that the NTE of Gd Fe(CN)_(6)comes from the strong tension effect induced by the transverse vibrations of the atomic-Fe-C≡N-Gd-linkages,with the largest contribution given by N *** dynamics calculations show that three low-frequency optical modes at about 50 cm^(-1)show the largest negative Grüneisen parameters thus providing the largest contribution to the *** existence of these unusual low-frequency vibrational modes can be ascribed to the presence of GdN_(6)trigonal prisms in the framework structure of Gd Fe(CN)_(6).

Summary This recent metaanalysis included an evaluation of nine randomized controlled trials that studied the rehabilitation of geriatric patients who had suffered a hip fracture. Using pooling of the aggregate data from each study, functional improvements were significantly better for those patients who received a multidisciplinary inpatient rehabilitation program compared with those who received usual care, both at discharge and at longer term follow-up. There was less risk of nursing home admission and also of mortality in the rehabilitated patients compared with the usual care patients.

Silver fir(Abies alba Mill.)is a flexible European tree species,mainly vegetating within the mountainous regions of Europe,but its growth responses across its latitudinal and longitudinal range have not yet been satisfactorily verified under changing environmental *** study describes the tree-ring increment of silver fir in research plots across a latitudinal gradient from the northern range in Czechia(CZ),through Croatia(HR)to the southernmost range in Italy(IT).The research aims to analyze in detail the dynamics and cyclicity of the ringwidth index(RWI)and how it relates to climatic factors(temperature and precipitation),the North Atlantic Oscillation(NAO),and total solar irradiance(TSI),including the determination of *** results show that the main drivers affecting fir growth are the seasonal NAO index and *** temperatures affect RWI early in the vegetation season,while lack of precipitation during the summer is a limiting factor for fir growth,especially in *** temperatures and temperatures in June and July negatively impact,while seasonal precipitation totals in the same months positively influence the RWI in all research plots across *** longest growth cycles in fir RWI were recorded in the northernmost studied plots in *** cyclical fluctuations recede approaching the *** cyclic increase in RWI is related to the TSI,which decreases its effect from north to *** TSI's effects vary,positively impacting CZ but negatively influencing HR while remaining relatively neutral in *** the other hand,seasonal NAO tends to negatively affect silver fir growth in HR and CZ but has a mildly positive effect in *** conclusion,the TSI and the influence of the seasonal NAO index are prevalent in the fir RWI and are accompanied by a greater cyclicity of RWI in Central Europe(temperature optimum)than in the Italian Mediterranean region,where this tree species is limited by climatic conditions,especially lack of pre
