Groundwater occurrence and flow patterns in the Ishiagu mining area of southeastern Nigeria

The Ishiagu area is a water scarce region and has played host to mining activities for more than four decades. Mining-related activities have become a threat to potable water supply in the area. This paper is an attempt to show the extent of this threat and in particular, investigate the regional groundwater occurrence and flow pattem based on GPs, water well and geological data. This basin- wide model can be used for further groundwater assess- ment, pollution control and contaminant management. Groundwater occurs between 2.4 and 9 m in the Lekwesi- Lokpaukwu area; 1.5-3.7 m in the Ndi-Ugbugbor-Ayaragu axis and 1.2-4.6 m in the Ishiagu area. Recharge areas include the Leru-Amaubiri-Lekwesi sandstone hills and the Ihetutu-Ugwuajirija mine field. While the ultimate sink of contamiants is the ivo River system, other discharge axis is the Ishiagu-Ayaragu axis and the Ogwor Ndi- Ugbugbor zone. An unconfined and a confined （〉 10） circulation groundwater system was inferred, and flow model reveals that a large part of Ishiag-Ayaragu and Ndi- Ugbugbor part of the study area suffer polluted recharge from the Pb/Zn mining area. Groundwater was also subjected to hierarchical cluster analysis and the existence of 3-4 hydrological regimes, which revealed： Unpolluted recharge areas, areas affected by polluted recharge, a deep water and shallow water circulation and mine effluents.

Li （lithium）, a mood stabilizer has anti-inflammatory effect. However, in clinical practice, Li can be administered together with other antidepressants drugs, such as FLX （fluoxetine）, IMI （imipramine）, NOR （nortriptyline） and EsC （escitalopram）. As interaction between Li and these antidepressant drugs on inflammatory modulation has not been investigated yet, we performed an in vitro protocol using a non-human macrophage cell line. Oxidative and inflammatory markers, as well as cell cycle analysis and cytokine gene expressions were compared among treatments. An IR （inflammatory ratio） was calculated based on the following oxidative-inflammatory variables： nitric oxide, superoxide anion, reactive oxygen molecules, cytokines IL-113, IL-6, TNF-ct and IL-10. The in vitro calculated IR data were validated through an in vivo analysis of 154 human subjects with similar IR. Li and control cells presented similar IR values. FLX, NOR and IMI increased slightly IR values indicating some proinflammatory effect, whereas EsC decreased IR values indicating some anti-inflammatory effect. However, cells exposed to Li ＋ EsC triggered a proinflammatory response on macrophages. Thus, IR comparison results suggest that the Li anti-inflammatory effect is not universal and could be influenced by both basal macrophage-inflammatory state and interaction of other psychiatric drugs. These results could be useful to understand some inconsistencies observed in human studies involving Li and other psychiatric drugs.

Objective: As isolates of Cryptococcus are frequently kept collection stocks in institutions, sometimes without proper characterization, we sought to determine the genotype profiles, protease and phospholipase activities “in vitro” and the susceptibility testing for azoles and amphotericin B. Methodology: 84 isolates from several regions of Brazil (40 samples from clinical origin and 44 isolates from environmental origin) were maintained at the microorganism’s bank of the Biomedical science Institute (ICB-UsP) of the são Paulo University, in são Paulo, Brazil. This isolates was submitted fungal strains determination, DNA extraction and purification, determination of genotype by URA5 gene RFLP of CGB-positive isolates, protease and phospholipase activity and susceptibility to antifungals. Results: Of six CGB positive isolates tested by RFLP-PCR, only four presented a genomic profile consistent C. gattii species (VGII), while two other were C. neoformans (VNI and VNIII), indicating the existence of canavanine-resistante C. neoformans isolates in the culture collections. The clinical isolates secreted higher levels of phospholipase and environmental isolates but no differences were observed for the protease levels. Almost all isolates were sensible to azoles and amphotericin B. Conclusion: We point out in this research the existence of C. neoformans strains resistant to canavanine and intrinsic characteristic of C. gatti. These results demonstrate the importance to perform a detailed characterization of isolates kept in culture collections.

Continuous variable valve actuating (CVVA) technology provides high potential in achieving high performance, low fuel consumption and pollutant reduction. To get full benefits from (CVVT) various types of mechanisms have been proposed and designed. some of these mechanisms are in production and have shown significant benefits in improving engine performance. In this investigation a newly designed gear drive mechanism that controls the intake valve opening (ivo) and closing (IVC) angles is studied. The control scheme is based on maximizing the engine brake power (P) and specific fuel consumption (BsFC) at any engine speed by continuously varying the phase between the cam shaft angle and the crank shaft angle. A single-cylinder engine is simulated by the “LOTUs” software to find out the optimum phase angle for maximum power and minimum fuel consumption at a given engine speed. The mechanism is a planetary gear drive designed for precise and continuous control. This mechanism has a simple design and operation conditions which can change the phase angle without limitation.

PET/MRI一体机在2006年被首次提出可应用于临床;2010年,首台临床型PET/MRI一体机诞生。在20世纪早期,PET/CT和sPECT/CT一体机的广泛应用体现了融合显像的优势,为PET/MRI一体机的产生奠定了基础。目前,全球大约有150台全身PET/MRI一体机投入了临床应用,其中肿瘤显像是PET/MRI的主要应用领域之一。迄今为止,尽管PET/MRI临床应用在增加,但标准化的PET/MRI扫描方案还很少。因此,有必要制定患者检查和多中心研究都可遵循的标准化且一致性好的显像方案。该文总结了18F-脱氧葡萄糖(FDG)PET/MRI全身显像的患者就诊、检查准备、工作流程、显像方案以及报告书写等主要方面的专家共识,由长期使用PET、MRI和较早使用PET/MRI的相关资深专家制定。

Contralateral axillary metastasis (CAM) is a rare entity normally treated as a systemic disease. Recent publications have proposed aggressive surgical treatment with benefits to the patients in terms of survival. We present a case of a 74-year-old patient with a history of unilateral breast cancer, recurrence on the ipsilateral breast and then development of a CAM. The patient was treated with aggressive surgical treatment, but she developed an early recurrence of the disease with distant metastasis. There is limited evidence of the correct management of CAM, although proposed to treat it as a loco regional disease, individualized and multidisciplinary management is the best option for these patients.
