Effects of vegetation strata and human disturbance on bird diversity in green areas in a city in southern Chile

Background: Urbanisation is a dominant geographical trend and an important component of global change, with unprecedented implications for socio?economic, cultural and environmental characteristics. However, green areas, including original fragments, can help to conserve native diversity, improving the functioning of these artificial systems in the long term. Urban areas can still provide habitats usable by wild birds, however the structural charac?teristics of the habitat formed by different types of green area differ, and therefore dissimilar bird diversities are to be expected. The object of this study was to characterise the α and β diversities of birds in different green areas and to analyse how diversity relates to ten variables that characterise the ***: We studied the green areas in the city of Temuco, southern Chile(Park, square and Median strips of main streets), evaluating the variables:(a) surface area,(b) vegetation,(c) estimated human impact as the proportions of vegetation and bare soil by area, and the vehicle traffic. The bird assemblage structures were characterised by α(intra?environment) diversity and β diversity(between environments) and the statistical analysis identified the environmen?tal variables related with the presence and abundance of birds. A statistical model was constructed to describe the contribution of the variables to bird ***: We found significant differences between the diversity of bird species in the three types of green area. The β showed medium to high similarity between the different study units. There was a negative correlation with bare soil areas; the correlations with vehicle flow, plant structure and tree and shrub cover were not significant, meaning that these variables did not explain the variation in the richness of bird species between the green areas. The south American grey fox Lycalopex griseus is a canid widely distributed in southern south America;however,some aspects of its biology are still poorly *** studied the diet and density of *** in the Lago Peñuelas Biosphere Reserve,in Central *** trophic niche breadth was B=6.16(B_(sta)=0.47)and prey diversity was H′=2.46(H_(max)′=3.17,J′=0.78).The highest proportions of prey consumed in the diet were Oryctolagus cuniculus(52.21%)and other mammals(32.78%).We compared these results with a latitudinal gradient of diet results for this species in *** eats mostly mammals(>90%of total prey),consuming the rodent Phyllotis darwini and reptiles in the northern zone;Oryctolagus cuniculus,Octodon degus and Abrocoma bennetti in the central zone;Abrothrix *** lagomorphs in the southern zone;and Lepus capensis and Ovis aries in the austral *** estimated density of *** in Lago Peñuelas NR was 1.3 foxes/km^(2).

Runner Bean （Phaseolus coccineus L.） Production in Chile

Runner bean is usually grown in Chile as household plantings, in small surfaces with trellis support. several studies were made to grow runner beans extensively without trellis support, like common beans are grown. Three runner bean ecotypes were evaluated, with and without trellis support. Although the highest yield was obtained with trellis support, significant yields were obtained without trellis. Thus, this specie can be established without support like the common bean, allowing a great economic advantage especially at large scale plantings. The ecotype named "Quilapallar" was selected by its white and large grains and excellent cooking quality. Then, seed rates and dry grain yield were compared with commercial varieties of common bean. There was not statistical difference in yield among row distances, except when this was 25 cm apart. Besides, there was not statistical difference among Quilapallar and Torcaza INIA, although the later is a common bean variety with a high yield potential.

Optimal length of triple therapy for H pylori eradication in a population with high prevalence of infection in Chile

AIM:To compare the efficacy of 7-d versus 14-d triple therapy for the treatment of H pylori infection in Chile,with a prevalence of 73% in general population. METHODs:H pylori-infected patients diagnosed by rapid urease test,with non-ulcer dyspepsia or peptic ulcer disease were randomized to receive omeprazole 20 mg bid,amoxicillin 1 g bid,and clarithromycin 500 mg bid for 7 (OAC7) or 14 (OAC14) d. Primary outcome was eradication rate 6 wk after the treatment. subgroup analysis was carried out considering the eradication rate among patients with or without peptic ulcer disease and eradication rate among smokers or non-smokers. REsULTs:One hundred and thirty-one patients were randomized to OAC7 (n = 69) or OAC14 (n = 62). The overall eradication rate (intention-to-treat) was 78.3% in OAC7 and 85.5% in OAC14 groups,without a significant difference (P =0.37). No significant difference in the eradication rate was found among the patients with peptic ulcer disease (n = 31) between the OAC7 group (85.7%) and OAC14 group (87.5%). However,smokers had an obviously lower eradication rate compared to non-smokers,particularly in the OAC7 group (57.1% in smokers vs 83.6% in non-smokers; P = 0.06). Adverse effects rate were similar between both groups. CONCLUsION:short-term efficacy of triple therapy with OAC for 7 d is comparable to 14 d in this high-prevalence population. Longer follow-up,and studies focused to some subgroups of patients (smokers and non-ulcerpatients) are necessary to support widespread use of 7-d instead of 10-14-d triple therapy in a developing country like Chile.
