Parathyroid ultrasonography and bone metabolic profile of patients on dialysis with hyperparathyroidism

AIM To evaluate the parathyroid ultrasonography and define parameters that can predict poor response to treatment in patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism due to renal *** This cohort study evaluated 85 patients with chronic kidney disease stage V with parathyroid hormone levels above 800 pg/mL. All patients underwent ultrasonography of the parathyroids and the following parameters were analyzed: Demographic characteristics(etiology of chronic kidney disease, gender, age, dialysis vintage, vascular access, use of vitamin D), laboratory(calcium, phosphorus, parathyroid hormone, alkaline phosphatase, bone alkaline phosphatase), and the occurrence of bone changes, cardiovascular events and death. The χ~2 test were used to compare proportions or the Fisher exact test for small sample frequencies. Student t-test was used to detect differences between the two groups regarding continuous *** Fifty-three patients(66.4%) had parathyroid nodules with higher levels of parathyroid hormone, calcium and phosphorus. Sixteen patients underwent parathyroidectomy and had higher levels of phosphorus and calcium × phosphorus product(P = 0.03 and P = 0.006, respectively). They also had lower mortality(32% vs 68%, P = 0.01) and lower incidence of cardiovascular or cerebrovascular events(27% vs 73%, P = 0.02). Calcium × phosphorus product above 55 mg^2/dL^2 [RR 1.48(1.06, 2.08), P = 0.03], presence of vascular calcification [1.33(1.01, 1.76), P = 0.015] and previous occurrence of vascular events [RR 2.25(1.27, 3.98), P < 0.001] were risk factors for mortality in this population. There was no association between the occurrence of nodules and *** The identification of nodules at ultrasonography strengthens the indication for parathyroidectomy in patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism due to renal failure.

Distribution and origin of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface sediments from an urban river basin at the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba,Brazil

The concentrations of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons（PAHs） were determined in surface sediment samples from nine sites located at the Iguau River Basin in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba,Brazil to evaluate their distribution and *** total concentration of the PAHs was greater for sediments from highly urbanized areas,while the sediments from the Iraí Environmental Protection Area（Iraí EPA） showed significantly low *** sediments from the Iguau and Barigui rivers were classified as highly contaminated,while those from the Cercado and Curralinho rivers were classified as moderately *** predominance of PAHs containing two to four aromatic rings in most of the samples suggested the direct input of raw sewage into the water resources ***[g,h,i]perylene,dibenzo[a,h]anthracene and indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene were predominant in sediments from the areas under the greatest urban and industrial *** correlation between thermodynamic stability and the kinetics of evolution presented by the isomeric pairs indicated that combustion is the predominant source of PAHs in the sediments because the combustion of fossil fuels affected most of the points evaluated,followed by combustion of biomass and eventually combustion of oil product *** general,the results showed that areas under strong urban influence,as well as the Iraí EPA,receive contributions of PAHs from similar sources.

Activation of the corticotropin-releasing factor receptor from the basolateral or central amygdala modulates nociception in guinea pigs

Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) is a peptide that is released from the hypothalamus into widespread areas of the brain. Evidence has suggested that CRF is involved as a neuromodulator outside of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, playing an important role in fear, anxiety, depression and pain modulation. Our previous report demonstrated that CRF receptor activation in basolateral (BLA) or central nuclei of the amygdala (CeA) produces innate fear in guinea pigs. Inhibition of these receptors via administration of α-helical CRF9-41 (a nonspecific antagonist) into the CeA or BLA decreased innate fear behavior [1]. Additionally, there is strong evidence that emotional behavior and nociception can be modulated simultaneously. The present study was conducted to investigate the involvement of the CRF receptors of the BLA or CeA in nociception in guinea pigs. Guinea pigs were treated with CRF and α-helical CRF>9-41> in three different doses or injected with α-helical CRF9-41 preceded by CRF into the BLA or CeA, and they were evaluated using the hot plate test. Our findings indicated that activation of CRF receptors in the BLA and in the CeA promoted antinociception, and this effect was reversed by preadministration of α-helical CRF9-41 in the same area. The treatment with α-helical CRF>9-41> per se into the BLA and CeA did not alter nociception. Thus, nociception modulation occurs in a phasic manner, whereas defensive behavior can occur tonically because the α-helical CRF9-41 did not cause any modification on the index of analgesia in the hot plate test but did reduce innate fear behavior [1].

The municipality of Boa Nova,in northeastern Brazil,is in an ecotone zone between the Caatinga and Atlantic Forest phytogeographic *** transition phytophysiognomy is seasonal forest and known locally as mata de cipó.In these phytophysiognomies there are lajedos,which are rock outcrops colonized by vegetation welladapted to extreme microclimatic variation and vegetation diversity is affected by the vegetation types of the surrounding *** to the singularity of these environments and the relevance of floristic studies for conservation,this work aimed to identify the species richness and compare the similarity of the flora on four rock outcrops in Boa *** flora was surveyed during exploratory walks along lajedos between 2016 and *** total,162 species were identified on the Boa Nova *** flora has a composition and structure similar to semiarid outcrops,as well as endemic species that also occur in surrounding *** the proximity,a similarity index revealed there is floristic dissimilarity between the *** new occurrences were recorded for the region,five species are threatened with extinction(Aosa gilgiana,Ficus cyclophylla,Hippeastrum stigmovittatum,Pleroma caatingae and Trixis pruskii),and 43 species are common in anthropogenic *** reinforces the importance of actions to conserve these areas.

Objective: To evaluate gene polymorphisms and their association with susceptibility to ***: A retrospective case-control study was performed with 262 subjects,comprising 78 dengue fever(DF) patients, 49 dengue hemorrhagic fever(DHF) patients and 135 healthy controls. Genotypic and allelic profiles were identified using polymerase chain reaction based in real time and amplification-refractory mutation ***: We observed a protective association of IL-10(-819 C/T) C allele(P = 0.028,OR = 0.56, CI = 0.34–0.91) against DHF, while the C/T(P = 0.047, OR = 2.10,CI = 1.01–4.38) and T/T(P = 0.008, OR = 3.82, CI = 1.38–10.59) genotypes were associated with DHF and DF, respectively. The dominant model TNFA-308 GA + AA(P = 0.043, OR = 0.45, CI = 0.20–1.00) genotypes were found to have protective effect against dengue infection. A protective association among the IFNG(+874 A/T) A/T genotype against DF(P = 0.02, OR = 0.46, CI = 0.24–0.89) and DHF(P = 0.034,OR = 0.43, CI = 0.19–0.95) was observed. When the studied single-nucleotide polymorphism was analyzed in combination, the combination GTA(P = 0.022, OR = 2.95,CI = 1.18–7.41) was statistically significantly associated with susceptibility to DF and the combination GCT(P = 0.035, OR = 0.28, CI = 0.08–0.90) with protection against the development of ***: This research identifies the association of the IFNG(+874 A/T), TNFA(-308 G/A), IL-10(-819 C/T) genotypes as a factor for protection, susceptibility and severity to dengue.

Beauty from within: A Review of the Science behind Yuliv<sup>TM</sup>Collagen Drink: An Anti-Aging Nutraceutical

The use of nutraceuticals to improve skin properties and decelerate skin aging has been gaining attention among dermatologists, over the last years. In this article, we are presenting the theoretical scientific support for YulivTM Collagen Drink, a liquid supplement containing bovine type I collagen peptides, ascorbic acid and Camellia sinensis (green tea) extract and its benefits on the skin. The available literature shows that the ingredients contained in the supplement have the potential to improve of skin hydration, dermis collagen density, and decrease the fragmentation of the dermal collagen network—and therefore reduce wrinkles and sagging and improving elasticity. Additionally, other health benefits could also be observed, such as protection against oxidative stress, contribution to the normal function of the immune system and reducing tiredness and fatigue, and reduction of skin inflammation, improvement of elasticity and prevention of oxidation. For those benefits to be visible, it is likely that continuous use of at least 4 weeks is needed.

Animal Manure as a Nitrogen Source to Grass

The use of animal manure has been studied increasingly in recent years due to the excess waste in confinements, which generates great amounts of animal excreta;and as a result of the worsening petroleum crisis, the cost of mineral fertilizing products has increased. Thus, studies point out the potential of this waste to improve biotic and abiotic soil condition and nutritional value of forage. Substances ingested by animals that resist the action of gastric enzymes are enriched with large amounts of bacteria, other microorganisms and other substances to form residual feces, the main component of manure, which, together with the wash water from barnyard urine, form the slurry. The volume of living or dead bacteria in the feces represents 20% of total manure and it is from these that a large amount of nitrogen originates as protein. Due to this potentiality, animal manure can be used as an input in agriculture, impacting positively on production and forage productivity, and having a favorable effect on the environment.

Green tea polyphenols inhibit testosterone production in rat Leydig cells

This study investigated the acute effects of green tea extract （GTE） and its polyphenol constituents, （-）-epigallocatechin-3-gallate （EGCG） and （-）-epicatechin （EC）, on basal and stimulated testosterone production by rat Leydig cells in vitro. Leydig cells purified in a Percoll gradient were incubated for 3 h with GTE, EGCG or EC and the testosterone precursor androstenedione, in the presence or absence of either protein kinase A （PKA） or protein kinase C （PKC） activators. The reversibility of the effect was studied by pretreating cells for 15 min with GTE or EGCG, allowing them to recover for 1 h and challenging them for 2 h with human chorionic gonadotropin （hCG）, luteinizing hormone releasing hormone （LHRH）, 22（R）-hydroxycholesterol or androstenedione. GTE and EGCG, but not EC, inhibited both basal and kinase-stimulated testosterone production. Under the pretreatment conditions, the inhibitory effect of the higher concentration of GTE/EGCG on hCG/LHRH-stimulated or 22（R）- hydroxycholesterol-induced testosterone production was maintained, whereas androstenedione-supported testosterone production returned to control levels. At the lower concentration of GTE/EGCG, the inhibitory effect of these polyphenols on 22（R）-hydroxycholesterol-supported testosterone production was reversed. The inhibitory effects of GTE may be explained by the action of its principal component, EGCG, and the presence of a gallate group in its structure seems important for its high efficacy in inhibiting testosterone production. The mechanisms underlying the effects of GTE and EGCG involve the inhibition of the PKA/PKC signalling pathways, as well as the inhibition of P450 side-chain cleavage enzyme and 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase function.

Tolerogenic dendritic cells （DCs） are widely studied for their possible use in the treatment of inflammatory disorders, such as autoimmune diseases. One of the obstacles for the use of this cell-based therapy is the characterization of drugs that are able to modulate DCs. We have previously shown that chloroquine （CQ）, an antimalarial agent, has the ability to modulate DCs towards a tolerogenic phenotype.1 These tolerogenic DCs are able to suppress the development of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis （EAE）, a T cell-driven mouse model of human multiple sclerosis. In addition, several studies have proposed that nitric oxide （NO） plays a major role in the dif- ferentiation of regulatory T cells （Tregs） and the suppression of Thl/Th17 cells.2＂3 However, little is known about the role of DC-derived NO in the modulation of inflammatory auto- immune responses. Thus, we aimed to evaluate whether NO plays a role in the tolerogenic activity of CQ-treated DCs （CQ- DCs）. We found that CQ induces DC production of NO and expression of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase （IDO）, as well as inducible nitric oxide syrtthase （iNOS）.
