Good nutrition plays a crucial role in maintaining a balanced lifestyle. The beneficial effects of nutrition have been found to counteract nutritional disturbances with the expanded use of nutraceuticals to treat and manage cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and other developmental defects over the last decade. Flavonoids are found abundantly in plant-derived foods such as fruits, vegetables, tea, cocoa, and wine. Fruits and vegetables contain phytochemicals like flavonoids, phenolics, alkaloids, saponins, and terpenoids. Flavonoids can act as anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-microbial(antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral) antioxidant, anti-cancer, and anti-diarrheal agents. Flavonoids are also reported to upregulate apoptotic activity in several cancers such as hepatic, pancreatic, breast, esophageal, and colon. Myricetin is a flavonol which is naturally present in fruits and vegetables and has shown possible nutraceutical value. Myricetin has been portrayed as a potent nutraceutical that may protect against cancer. The focus of the present review is to present an updated account of studies demonstrating the anticancer potential of myricetin and the molecular mechanisms involved therein. A better understanding of the molecular mechanism(s) underlying its anticancer activity would eventually help in its development as a novel anticancer nutraceutical having minimal side effects.

Impact of open dumping of municipal solid waste on soil properties in mountainous region

This paper presents the effect of open dumping of municipal solid waste(MSW) on soil characteristics in the mountainous region of Himachal Pradesh, India. The solid waste of dumpsite contains various complex characteristics with organic fractions of the highest proportions. As leachate percolates into the soil, it migrates contaminants into the soil and affects soil stability and strength. The study includes the geotechnical investigation of dump soil characteristics and its comparison with the natural soil samples taken from outside the proximity of dumpsites. The geochemical analysis of dumpsite soil samples was also carried out by scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS).Visual inspection revealed that the MSW consists of high fraction of organics, followed by paper. The soil samples were collected from five trial pits in the dumpsites at depths of 0.5 m, 1 m and 1.5 m. Then the collected soil samples were subjected to specific gravity test, grain size analysis, Atterberg’s limit test,compaction test, direct shear test, California bearing ratio(CBR) test and permeability analysis. The study indicated that the dumpsite soils from four study regions show decreasing trends in the values of maximum dry density(MDD), specific gravity, cohesion and CBR, and increasing permeability as compared to the natural soil. The results show that the geotechnical properties of the soils at all four study locations have been severely hampered due to contamination induced by open dumping of waste.

Studies on Rhizospheric Mycoflora of Tea (Camellia sinensis): In vitro Antagonism with Dominant Bacteria

Species of Trichoderma, Penicillium, Aspergillus and Mucor were found to dominate the rhizosphere of tea bushes in different regions of the Indian Himalayas. The Himachal Himalayas were dominated by Monilia humiscola (45.08%) and Mucor hiemalis (33.11%). In the Uttaranchal Himalayas, Aspergillus clavatum dominated the rhizosphere (54.01%), followed by A. flavous (20.07%). Although the fungal isolates require a mesophillic temperature (15 ℃ to 35 ℃), the tea rhizospheric isolates tolerate a wide range of temperatures (5 ℃ to 45 ℃). When tested for pH tolerance, these fungi showed a wide range (2.0 to 13.0) of pH tolerance under in vitro conditions. Seasonal variations also influenced the colony forming units (cfu) of the rhizospheric fungi, with the maximum forming in November and March, and the minimum in December^February. During this period, the populations of the fungi were found inversely proportional to the bacterial populations. In addition, the dominant bacteria in the tea rhizosphere, i.e., Bacillus subtilis and B. mycoides, showed antagonistic activity against fungal isolates by inhibiting the growth and causing structural abnormalities in mycelium. Pure(pristine)anatase and mono–doped and co–doped derivatives of TiO_(2)having nitrogen(N)and cobalt(Co)as dopants with respective fixed doping concentrations of 0.7 mol.%and 1.0 mol.%were synthesized using auto–combustion sol–gel *** doping effects at corresponding non–metal and transition metal sites of TiO_(2)on the basis of the structural,optical and electrical properties have been investigated.X–ray diffraction(XRD)measurement confirms the formation of pure anatase phase of TiO_(2)for all samples having I41/amd space group of tetragonal structure which has been also verified by the Raman spectroscopy *** crystallographic parameters have been calculated by performing Rietveld refinement of XRD data including average crystallite size that has been observed in the range of10–15 *** anatase phase indicates the incorporation of Co^(2+)into TiO_(2)lattice which assists the substitution of N in place of oxygen in co–doped TiO_(2).The band gap tuning towards the visible region from3.2 to 2.1 e V has been achieved with mono–doping and co–doping of the N and Co in TiO_(2)*** can be described in terms of the formation of localized levels of N–2p and Co–3d states in mono–doping and an isolated intermediate band formation in co–doping *** properties have been investigated in details and explained as the synergetic effects of structural and inherent ionic characters of various *** observed band gaps of all doped samples lie within the visible region which makes them pertinent as the solar energy harnessing materials for photocatalytic and photovoltaic applications.

Comprehensive Review on Air Pollution Control Measures for Non-Attainment Cities of Uttar Pradesh, India

Introduction: The Indian state of Uttar Pradesh (UP) for the past many years has been reported to have many cities with highly polluted air quality. The state has been taking meticulous steps in combating air pollution in the form of action plans, introduced especially in its 17 non-attainment cities (NAC). To assess the progress and development of these action plans in UP, the present study has done an in-depth analysis and review of the state’s action plans and city micro action plans. Materials and Methods: In this research study, the analysis of the latest action plan reports, micro action plan reports as well as the recommendations for combating air pollution-related issues in the 17 NAC of the UP state has been well documented. Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) has prepared these reports to highlight the progress of the plans in response to the growing air pollution in these cities. The information present in the reports has been used to further study sector-specific, category-specific action plans, institutional responsibility, and the present status of the action plans. Results: On average, the highest weightage in action plans was given to sector-specific categories such as Road dust and construction activities (24%). It was also observed that Urban local bodies (~50%) were majorly responsible to implement the action points and 56% of the action points were jointly implemented by multiple agencies.

Complete oxidation of 1,4-dioxane over zeolite-13X-supported Fe catalysts in the presence of air

Zeolite-13X-supported Fe（Fe/zeolite-13X） catalysts with various Fe contents were prepared by the wet impregnation *** catalysts were characterized by N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms to estimate the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface areas and Barrett-Joyner-Hanlenda pore size distributions.X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy,temperature-programmed reduction,and temperature-programmed desorption of NH3 were used to investigate the textural properties of the Fe/zeolite-13 X *** catalytic activities were determined for the complete oxidation of1,4-dioxane using air as the oxidant in a fixed-bed flow reactor in the temperature range 100-400℃.The influences of various process parameters,such as reaction temperature,metal loading,and gas hourly space velocity（GHSV）,on the dioxane removal efficiency by catalytic oxidation were *** stability of the catalyst was tested at 400℃ by performing time-on-stream analysis for 50 *** Fe/zeolite-13 X catalyst with 6 wt%Fe exhibited the best catalytic activity among the Fe/zeolite-13 X catalysts at 400℃ and a GHSV of 24000 h^（-1）,with 97%dioxane conversion and95%selectivity for the formation of carbon oxides（CO and CO2）.Trace amounts（ 3%） of acetaldehyde,ethylene glycol monoformate,ethylene glycol diformate,1,4-dioxane-2-ol,1,4-dioxane-2-one,and 2-methoxy-1,3-dioxalane were also formed as degradation products.A plausible degradation mechanism is proposed based on the products identified by GC-MS analysis.
