The basin of Rio de la Sabana is the largest tributary of the Tres Palos coastal lagoon in Southwest Mexico, east of Acapulco. This lagoon and its upstream basin areas have become a high priority area for the preservation of coastal and marine environments. To obtain information about water quality as affected by urban expansion since 2002, fourteen physicochemical parameters (temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, ammonium, nitrate, nitrite, sulphate, phosphate), biochemical (biological and chemical oxygen demand, methylene blue active substances) and bacteriological parameters (total and fecal coliforms) were determined. This sampling was done for dry and rainy season conditions at seven locations (S1, S2, S3, …, S7) along the river, spaced 3 to 6 km apart to a total of 30.4 km. The results were grouped into four zones: (Z1) reference, (Z2) transition, (Z3) polluted, (Z4) recovery. The Alborada (S5) and Tunzingo (S6) sites, adjacent to dense high-class residential areas (Z3), had the greatest pollution charges in both seasons, while the la Poza (S7) site near the Tres Palos lagoon (Z4) showed a decrease in pollution. All parameters correlated with increasing head- to down-river sampling distance by following linear (pH, DO) or curvilinear patterns (all other parameters). Using sampling location and dry versus rainy sampling season as multivariate regression (predictor) variables led to least-squares capturing: 1) 66% to 95% of the T(°C), pH, DO, and PO3-4 variations, and 2) 57% to 96% of the log-linear variations of the other parameters. Among the parameters, T(°C), DO, and PO3-4 were not significantly affected by sampling season, while pH became so after deleting two higher than usual pH values at the S5 and S6 locations during the dry season.

AIM: To analyze the attitude of Spanish medical students toward living liver donation (llD) and to establish which factors have an influence on this ***: Study type: A sociological, interdisciplinary, multicenter and observational study. Study population: Medical students enrolled in Spain (n = 34000) in the university academic year 2010-2011. Sample size: A sample of 9598 students stratified by geographical area and academic year. Instrument used to measure attitude: A validated questionnaire (PCID-DVH RIOS) was self-administered and completed anonymously. Data collection procedure: Randomly selected medical schools. The questionnaire was applied to each academic year at compulsory sessions. Statistical analysis: Student´s t test, χ2 test and logistic regression ***: The completion rate was 95.7% (n = 9275). 89% (n = 8258) were in favor of related llD, and 32% (n = 2937) supported unrelated llD. The following variables were associated with having a more favorable attitude: (1) age (P = 0.008); (2) sex (P l area (P = 0.013); (5) believing in the possibility of needing a transplant oneself in the future (P living kidney donation (P liver segment from a family member if one were needed (P ly (P ltruistic nature; and (12) fear of the possible mutilation of the body after donation (P lUSION: Spanish medical students have a favorable attitude toward llD.

Comparison of Secnidazole and Fenbendazole for the Treatment of Asymptomatic Giardia Infection in Dogs

The objetive of this study was to compare a single dose of secnidazole versus multiple doses of fenbendazole for the treatment of dogs with asymptomatic Giardia *** and methods:Twenty-four asymptomatic dogs with a positive test result for Giardia spp were randomized in two equal groups to receive a single dose of secnidazole at 30 mg/kg PO,or fenbendazole at 50 mg/kg PO q24h for 3 *** parameters were evaluated before and 8 days after treatment,and feces were re-examined at days 8,15,and 30 post-treatment by fecal flotation and antigen ***:The number of positive dogs in the fenbendazole group was:1(day 8)and 3(days 15 and 30).In the secnidazole group,the number of positive cases were:4(day 8),3(day 15),and 1(day 30).Conclusion:Treatment with secnidazole or fenbendazole,were effective between 75%and 92%to eliminate the excretion of Giardia cysts in canines together with hygienic measures to control,like disinfection with quaternary ammonium of patients and their *** studies that include more animals and multiple fecal exams on consecutive days would be necessary to confirm its efficacy in dogs.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFlD) includes a spectrum of diseases that have insulin resistance in common and are associated with metabolic conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidemia. NAFlD ranges from simple liver steatosis, which follows a benign course, to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a more severe entity, with necroinflmmation and f ibrosis, which can progress to cryptogenic cirrhosis and end-stage liver disease. liver biopsy remains the gold standard for evaluating the degree of hepatic necroinflammation and f ibrosis; however, several noninvasive investigations, such as serum biomarkers, have been developed to establish the diagnosis and also to evaluate treatment response. These markers are currently neither available in all centers nor validated in extensive studies. Examples include high-sensitivity C reactive protein and plasma pentraxin 3, which are associated with extensive liver f ibrosis in NASH. Interleukin-6 correlates with inflammation, and cytokeratin-18 represents a marker of hepatocyte apoptosis (prominent in NASH and absent in simple steatosis). Tissue polypep-tide specif ic antigen seems to have a clinical utility in the follow-up of obese patients with NASH.

AIM To characterize peripheral blood natural killer(NK) cells phenotypes by flow cytometry as potential biomarker of liver fibrosis in human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)/hepatitis C virus(HCV) coinfected *** Peripheral mononuclear cells from 24 HIV/HCV(HBVnegative) coinfected and 5 HIV/HCV/HBV seronegative individuals were evaluated. HIV/HCV coinfected patients were divided in to groups: G1, patients with METAVIR F0-F2 and G2, patients with METAVIR F3-F4. NK surface cell staining was performed with: AntiCD3(APC/Cy7), anti-CD56(PE/Cy5), anti-CD57(APC), anti-CD25(PE), anti-CD69(FITC), anti-NKp30(PE), antiNKp46(PE/Cy7), anti-NKG2D(APC), anti-DNAM(FITC); anti-CD62l(PE/Cy7), anti-CCR7(PE), anti-TRAIl(PE), anti-Fas l(PE), anti CD94(FITC). Flow cytometry data acquisition was performed on BD FACSCanto, analyzed using Flow Jo software. Frequency of fluorescence was analyzed for all single markers. Clinical records were reviewed, and epidemiological and clinical data were *** Samples from 11 patients were included in G1 and from 13 in G2. All patients were on ARV, with undetectable HIV viral load. liver fibrosis was evaluated by transient elastography in 90% of the patients and with biopsy in 10% of the patients. Mean HCV viral load was(6.18 ± 0.7 log10). Even though, no major significant differences were observed between G1 and G2 regarding NK surface markers, it was found that patients with higher liver fibrosis presented statistically lower percentage of NK cells than individual with low to mild fibrosis and healthy controls(G2: 5.4% ± 2.3%, G1: 12.6% ± 8.2%, P = 0.002 and healthy controls 12.2% ± 2.7%, P = 0.008). It was also found that individuals with higher liver fibrosis presented lower CD4 lT count than those from G1(G2: 521 ± 312 cells/μl, G1: 770 ± 205 cells/μl; P = 0.035).CONClUSION Higher levels of liver fibrosis were associated with lower percentage of NK cells and lTCD4+ count; and they may serve as noninvasive biomarkers of liver damag

laurel forests are quite relevant for biodiversity conservation and are among the island ecosystems most severely damaged by human *** the past,Canary laurel forests have been greatly altered by logging,livestock and *** remains of laurel forests are currently protected in the Canary Islands(Spain).However,we miss basic information needed for their restoration and adaptive management,such as tree longevity,growth potential and responsiveness to natural and anthropogenic *** dendrochronological methods,we studied how forest dynamic is related to land-use change and windstorms in two well-preserved laurel forests on Tenerife *** cores were collected from over 80 trees per stand at three stands per *** used ring-width series to estimate tree ages and calculate annual basal area increments(BAI),cumulative diameter increases,and changes indicative of released and suppressed *** tree species were found in all stands,with laurus novocanariensis,Ilex canariensis and Morella faya being the most common *** some individuals were over 100 years old,61.8%-88.9% of the trees per stand established between 1940 and 1970,coinciding with a post-war period of land abandonment,rural exodus and the onset of a tourism *** trees have shown growth rates larger than 1 cm diameter per year and most species have had increasing BAI trends over the past *** growth releases occurred after windstorms at both sites,but the effects of windstorms were site-dependent,with the 1958 storm affecting mainly the eastern tip of the island(anaga massif)and the 1991 storm the western tip(Teno massif).Given the great ability of laurel forest trees to establish after land use cessation and to increase growth after local disturbances such as windstorms,passive restoration may be sufficient to regenerate this habitat in currently degraded areas.

Spontaneous and Bleomycin-Induced <i>γ</i>H2AX Signals in CHO9 Metaphase Chromosomes

In eukaryotes, a cascade of events named DNA damage response (DDR) has evolved to handle DNA lesions. DDR engages the recruitment of signaling, checkpoint control, repair and chromatin remodeling protein complexes, allowing cell cycle delay, DNA repair or induction of apoptosis. An early DDR event involves the phosphorylation of the histone variant γH2AX on serine 139 (H2AX139 phosphorylation) originating the so-called γH2AX. DDR-related H2AX139 phosphorylation have been extensively studied in interphase nuclei. More recently, γH2AX signals on mitotic chromosomes of asynchronously growing cell cultures were observed. We performed a quantitative analysis of γH2AX signals on γH2AX immunolabeled cytocentrifuged metaphase spreads, analyzing the γH2AX signal distributions of CHO9 chromosomes harboring homologous regions both in control and bleomycin (BlM)-treated cultures. We detected γH2AX signals in CHO9 chromosomes of controls which significantly increase after BlM-exposure. γH2AX signals were uniformly distributed in chromosomes of controls. However, the γH2AX signal distribution in BlM exposed cells was significantly different between chromosomes and among chromosome regions, with few signals near the centromeres and a tendency to increase towards the telomeres. Interestingly, both basal and BlM-induced γH2AX signal distribution were statistically equal between CHO9 homologous chromosome regions. Our results suggest that BlM exerts an effect on H2AX139 phosphorylation, prevailing towards acetylated and gene-rich distal chromosome segments. The comparable H2AX139 phosphorylation of homologous regions puts forward its dependence on chromatin structure or function and its independence of the position in the karyotype.
