High-resolution multi-scale air pollution system:Evaluation of modelling performance and emission control strategies

A high percentage of the world's population lives in areas where air pollutant concentrations exceed the World Health Organization *** work aims to develop and test,a high-resolution multi-scale air pollution modelling system by integrating a set of adequate *** system is able to provide detailed air pollutant concentrations in urban areas and support air quality management strategies through a better identification of different atmospheric *** also allows furthering the design and assessment of air pollution control measures for a specific *** evaluate its performance and suitability,the system was applied to the Macao Special Administrative Region(SAR),China,one of the most densely populated areas on earth,during a winter period when this area is affected by high levels of Particulate Matter(PM).Although the developed system tends to underestimate the PM concentrations,it revealed a good performance in reproducing the temporal and spatial air pollution *** exceedances of the Chinese air quality standards were calculated and high population exposure to PM pollution was *** tested urban atmospheric emission reduction scenarios have shown air quality improvements,indicating that emission reduction measures at urban level should focus on the domestic ***,it is crucial to implement joint pollution prevention strategies with neighbouring regions to improve the air quality in Macao *** approach developed in this work can support policymakers in defining new strategies to reduce atmospheric pollution in urban areas.

Homeostasis of monoaminergic pathways is compromised in aging and neurodegenerative/neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and depression. On the other hand, their modulation has also been linked to the mechanism of action of several drugs. Therefore, monitoring the levels of noradrenaline(NA), adrenaline(AD), dopamine(DA), and serotonin(5-HT), as well as those of tryptophan(TRYP), the precursor of 5-HT, and DA metabolites, namely 3,4-dihydroxyphenylaceticacid(DOPAC) and homovanillicacid(HVA), is fundamental for assessing disease severity and progression. This work aimed to develop and validate the first High-Performance liquid Chromatography(HPlC) coupled with fluorescence detector(FlD) method that simultaneously and accurately quantifies NA, AD, DA, DOPAC, HVA, 5-HT and TRYP in mouse brain and prefrontal cortex(PFC) matrices. Previous sample preparation by protein precipitation was required to extract the compounds. Calibration curves were plotted using the background subtraction approach to reduce the interference of the endogenous analytes. Intra and inter-day accuracy and precision were within the ranges defined by ICH(The International Council for Harmonisation) guideline for bioanalytical method validation. Following validation, the impact of cannabidiol(CBD), cannabigerol(CBG), and cannabidivarin(CBDV) was explored in mice brains post-administration,revealing significant alterations in specific neurotransmitter levels upon cannabinoid exposure and shedding light on the complex modulation of neurochemical dynamics by cannabinoids. This research highlights the fit-for-purpose of the HPlC-FlD method and provides insights into potential mechanisms underlying phytocannabinoid actions in the central nervous system(CNS).

Treating protein-rich wastewater using cost-effective and simple-structured single-stage reactors presents several *** this study,we applied an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor(AnSBR)to treat protein-rich wastewater from a *** focused on identifying the key factors influencing the removal of chemical oxygen demand(COD)and the settling performance of the *** AnSBR achieved a maximum total COD removal of 90%,a protein degradation efficiency exceeding 80%,and a COD to methane conversion efficiency of over 70%at organic loading rates of up to 6.2 g COD l^(-1)d^(-1).We found that the variations in both the organic loading rate within the reactor and the hydraulic retention time in the buffer tank had a significant effect on COD *** hydraulic retention time in the buffer tank and the reactor,which determined the ammonification efficiencies and the residual carbohydrate concentrations in the reactor liquid,affected the sludge ***,the genus Clostridium sensu stricto 1,known as protein-and lipids-degraders,was predominant in the *** analysis showed a significant correlation between the core microbiome and ammonification efficiency,highlighting the importance of protein degradation as the governing process in the *** results will provide valuable insights to optimise the design and operation of AnSBR for efficient treatment of protein-rich wastewater.

This paper addresses the present-day context of Systems Engineering, revisiting and setting up an updated framework for the SIMIlAR process in order to use it to engineer the contemporary systems. The contemporary world is crowded of large interdisciplinary complex systems made of other systems, personnel, hardware, software, information, processes, and facilities. An integrated holistic approach is crucial to develop these systems and take proper account of their multifaceted nature and numerous interrelationships. As the system＇s complexity and extent grow, the number of parties involved （stakeholders and shareholders） usually also raises, bringing to the interaction a considerable amount of points of view, skills, responsibilities, and interests. The Systems Engineering approach aims to tackle the complex and interdisciplinary whole of those socio-technical systems, providing the means to enable their successful realization. Its exploitation in our modern world is assuming an increasing relevance noticeable by emergent standards, academic papers, international conferences, and post-graduate programmes in the field. This work aims to provide ＂the picture＂ of modern Systems Engineering, and to update the context of the SIMIlAR process model in order to use this renewed framework to engineer the challenging contemporary systems. The emerging trends in the field are also pointed-out with particular reference to the Model-Based Systems Engineering approach.

Microbiological assessment of street foods at the point of sale in Maputo(Mozambique)

Fluid dynamics performance of phase change material particles in a Wurster spout–fluid bed

Spout–fluid-bed coating of solid–lipid materials, including some Phase Change Materials (PCMs), is a rarely used approach because of the probability of a phase change during the process. However, if mastered, this process could enable the commercialization of high-load PCM particles to develop new materials. An understanding of the thermal and fluid dynamics profiles inside a reactor can be used to establish optimized coating conditions, to avoid premature PCM melting and to maximize the drying rate. This research studies, through computational simulation, the behavior of particles and the experimental thermal profile inside a Wurster spout–fluid bed. A simplified model approach of momentum was simulated using OpenFOAM and carnauba wax particles as a PCM material. The simulation showed that appropriate flow conditions inside the Wurster tube must vary between 200 and 300 m3/h to ensure a better particle coating. The measured experimental thermal profile was uniform in the reactor and it was 5–10 °C lower than the set temperature. Thus, a maximum airflow at 70 °C that was used in the equipment is considered suitable for the further coating of PCM particles. The methodology proved useful for the preliminary identification of flow and temperature conditions in the spout–fluid process.

Droplet-based bioprinting enables the fabrication of cell–hydrogel–microfibre composite tissue precursors

Composites offer the option of coupling the individual benefits of their constituents to achieve unique material properties,which can be of extra value in many tissue engineering *** combining hydrogelswith fibre-based scaffolds can create tissue constructs with enhanced biological and structural ***,developing efficient and scalable approaches to manufacture such composites is ***,we use a droplet-based bioprinting system called reactive jet impingement(ReJI)to integrate a cell-laden hydrogel with a microfibrous *** system uses microvalves connected to different bioink reservoirs and directed to continuously jet bioink droplets at one another in mid-air,where the droplets react and form a hydrogel that lands on a microfibrous ***–hydrogel–fibre composites are produced by embedding human dermal fibroblasts at two different concentrations(5×10^(6) and 30×10^(6) cells/ml)in a collagen–alginate–fibrin hydrogel matrix and bioprinted onto a fibre-based *** results show that both types of cell–hydrogel–microfibre composite maintain high cell viability and promote cell–cell and cell–biomaterial *** lower fibroblast density triggers cell proliferation,whereas the higher fibroblast density facilitates faster cellular organisation and infiltration into the ***,the fibrous component of the composite is characterised by high swelling properties and the quick release of calcium *** data indicate that the created composite constructs offer an efficient way to create highly functional tissue precursors for laminar tissue engineering,particularly for wound healing and skin tissue engineering applications.
