As hydropower development expands across lowland tropical forests,flooding and concomitant insular fragmentation have become important threats to *** created insular landscapes serve as natural laboratories to investigate biodiversity responses to *** of these most iconic landscapes is the Balbina Hydroelectric Reservoir in Brazilian Amazonia,occupying>400000 ha and comprising>3500 forest ***,we synthesise the current knowledge on responses of a wide range of biological groups to insular fragmentation at *** has largely concentrated on a set of 22 islands and three mainland *** total,39 studies were conducted over nearly two decades,covering 17 vertebrate,invertebrate,and plant *** species responses varied according to taxonomic group,island area was consistently included and played a pivotal role in 66.7%of all studies examining patterns of species *** persistence was further affected by species traits,mostly related to species capacity to use/traverse the aquatic matrix or tolerate habitat degradation,as noted for species of vertebrates and orchid *** research is needed to improve our understanding of such effects on wider ecosystem *** impact Assessments must account for changes in both the remaining habitat amount and configuration,and subsequent long-term species losses.

Hydropower development has become an important driver of habitat loss and fragmentation across lowland tropical *** ample evidence on the detrimental effects of insular habitat fragmentation on biodiversity,invertebrate taxa,that may be critical to ecosystem functioning,have been *** assessed the assemblage-level responses of social wasps to forest insularization induced by the Balbina Hydroelectric Dam in Central Brazilian *** malaise trapping,we captured wasps on 27 forest islands and three continuous *** constructed Generalized linear models and employed a model selection approach to examine the impact of local variables(fire severity(FIRE)and basal area of pioneer tree species(PIONEER))and landscape-scale variables(amount of habitat(COVER))on patterns of species richness,composition,and body size of wasps.A total of 374 individuals(29 species)were collected across all sampling *** was the main predictor of species richness,while PIONEER was the only variable that explained variation in community composition,with a negative effect on body *** results add evidence to the pervasive impacts of large hydroelectric dams on tropical forest biodiversity,and suggest that social wasps,among other invertebrates,can be used as bioindicators in infrastructure development projects.

Considering the recommended indications for Helicobacter pylori(***)eradication therapy and the broad spectrum of available diagnostic methods,a reliable diagnosis is mandatory both before and after eradication *** highly accurate tests should be used in clinical practice,and the sensitivity and specificity of an adequate test should exceed 90%.The choice of tests should take into account clinical circumstances,the likelihood ratio of positive and negative tests,the cost-effectiveness of the testing strategy and the availability of the *** review concerns some of the most recent developments in diagnostic methods of *** infection,namely the contribution of novel endoscopic evaluation methodologies for the diagnosis of *** infection,such as magnifying endoscopy techniques and *** addition,the diagnostic contribution of histology and the urea breath test was explored recently in specific clinical settings and patient *** studies recommend enhancing the number of biopsy fragments for the rapid urease *** culture from the gastric biopsy is the gold standard technique,and is recommended for antibiotic susceptibility *** is used for initial screening and the stool antigen test is particularly used when the urea breath test is not available,while molecular methods have gained attention mostly for detecting antibiotic resistance.

Oligodendrocytes are key neural cells that are responsible for producing myelin sheaths that wrap around neuronal axons in the central nervous *** is essential to insulate neurons and maintain a fast and saltatory propagation of action potentials along the ***,oligodendrocytes are very susceptible to damage,and thus demyelination may arise from a brain lesion or a neurodegenerative ***,demyelination produces a loss of axonal insulation leading to sensory or motor neuron *** adulthood,there are two main sources of oligodendrocytes:parenchymal oligodendrocyte precursor cells(OPCs)and subventricular zone derived *** this review,we will discuss oligodendrogenesis derived from these two sources,and also highlight their main extrinsic and intrinsic *** addition,the neuroinflammatory mediators of oligodendrogenesis will also be assessed.

Neural stem cells(NSCs)are known to be present in the adult mammalian brain where they constitutively differentiate into the neuronal,astroglial,and oligodendroglial lineages,in defined processes termed neurogenesis,ast rogl iogenesis and oligodendrogenesis,respectively(reviewed in Braun and Jessberger,2014).During brain development,NSCs are present throughout the brain,becoming progressively restricted to defined brain *** the adult brain,NSCs are mainly present in areas classically known as neurogenic niches,*** subventricular zone(SVZ),along the lateral walls of the lateral ventricles,and the subgranular zone,located in the dentate gyrus(DG)of the hippocampus.

Skin is widely used as a drug delivery route due to its easy access and the possibility of using relatively painless methods for the administration of bioactive ***,the barrier properties of the skin,along with its multilayer structure,impose severe restrictions on drug transport and ***,bioengineered models aimed at emulating the skin have been developed not only for optimizing the transdermal transport of different drugs and testing the safety and toxicity of substances but also for understanding the biological processes behind skin *** though in vivo research is often preferred to study biological processes involving the skin,in vitro and ex vivo strategies have been gaining increasing relevance in recent ***,there is a noticeably increasing adoption of in vitro and ex vivo methods by internationally accepted ***,microfluidic organ-on-a-chip devices are nowadays emerging as valuable tools for functional and behavioural skin *** in miniaturization,automation and reliability still need to be addressed in order to create skin models that can predict skin behaviour in a robust,high-throughput manner,while being compliant with regulatory issues,standards and *** this review,skin models for transdermal transport,wound repair and cutaneous toxicity will be discussed with a focus on high-throughput *** microfluidic strategies driven by advancements in microfabrication technologies will also be revised as a way to improve the efficiency of existing models,both in terms of complexity and throughput.

Reproductive Strategies of a Terrestrial Snail along an Altitudinal Gradient on an Oceanic Island

This study reports how the reproductive cycle of a land snail endemic from an oceanic island is shaped by abiotic factors over an altitudinal gradient of 800 m. In addition, the validity of two morphometric shell parameters （maximum diameter and total height） was assessed, as maturation diagnostic characteristics. The authors＇ findings suggest that, at Piedade （200 m）, individuals are active and mature from October/November to march, and they exhibit dormancy in the remaining months, as a consequence of soil dryness. Thus, at low altitude, gonadal maturation was considered to be primarily influenced by photoperiod, rainfall and temperature At Cabeqo da Bola （1000 m）, in turn, individuals are mature from march to July/August and they seem to have minimal gametogenic conditions throughout the remaining months of the year to reproduce. As soil moisture is never a limiting factor, gonadal maturation is mainly shaped by photoperiod and temperature at high altitude. The morphometric shell parameters under analysis were unable to diagnose gonadal maturation, as recently described for related Azorean species.

Babywalkers are wheeled seats for infants that support their weight and allow them to move around,pushing the floor with their feet or feet’s *** purpose of the present study was to verify if Portuguese infants that used babywalker gained or not temporal advantage compared to infants who did not use any instrument for learning to *** were obtained through a structured questionnaire for parents,with closed *** revealed that babywalkers use does not afford advantages in the acquisition of independent *** absence of association between seat and walk autonomously in babywalker users that also used other walk-helper(e.g.,harness belt)reinforces the hypothesis that the use of these equipments may disrupt normal process of transition between seat and walk in *** the sample of the present study,a great percentage of Portuguese parents still presume that the use of babywalkers or similar equipments are necessary for independent walking *** should be discouraged as an instrument for independent walk learning,and be replaced by functional stimulation,like stepping reflex systematic practice.
