Modulative effect of Physalis alkekengi on both gut bacterial and fungal micro-ecosystem

Objective: Gut microbiome is an intricate micro-ecosystem mediating the human health and drug efficacy. Physalis alkekengi(PAL) is an edible and time-honored traditional Chinese medicine. Several pharmacological effects of PAL have been verified and gut bacteria are implied in its therapeutic ***, the detailed modulation of PAL on gut bacterial species and on gut fungi remains largely unknown. We, therefore, designed a preliminary experiment in normal mice to reveal the modulation effect of PAL on both gut bacteria and fungi, and explore the interaction between ***: Herein, the aqueous extract of PAL was orally administrated to normal C57BL/6 mice for four weeks. The full-length 16S rRNA and ITS1/2 gene sequencing were explored to detect the taxa of gut bacteria and gut fungi after PAL treatment, ***: Oral administration of PAL notably enriched anti-infammatory bacterial species such as Duncaniella spp. and Kineothrix alysoides, whereas decreased pro-infammatory species such as Mucispirillum schaedleri. Simultaneously, PAL increased the abundance of gut fungi Aspergillus ochraceus,Cladosporium sp. and Alternaria sp., and decreased Penicillium janthinellum. Correlation network analysis identified two co-existing microbial groups(groups 1 and 2) that were negatively associated with each other. The group 1 comprised PAL-enriched bacteria and fungi, while group 2 was mainly normal chow-enriched bacteria and fungi. In group 1, Antrodia monomitica, Aspergillus clavatus, Mortierella kuhlmanii and Sarcinomyces sp. MA 4787 were positively correlated with Bifidobacterium globosum,Romboutsia ilealis and so on. Monte Carlo Study on Spontaneous Recoil of Confined DNA Chain

A part of a long DNA chain was driven into a confined environment by an electric field, while the rest remains in the higher-entropy region. Upon removal of the field, the chain recoils to the higher-entropy region spontaneously. This dynamical process was investigated by Monte Carlo simulations. The simulation reproduces the experimentally-observed phenomenon that the recoil of the DNA chain is initially slow and gradually increases in speed due to the presence of the confinement-entropic force. The results show that with increasing the dimension or decreasing the spacing of the nanopillars the recoil velocity of the DNA chain will increase. Further analysis suggests that the characteristic entropy per monomer in the confinement is proportional to the area fraction of the free part in the confinement.

EFFECTS OF WATER-DEPTH ON HYDRODYNAMIC FORCE OF ARTIFICIAL REEF

The effects of water-depth on the hydrodynamic force of the artificial reef were studied by simulating regular and irregular waves. The computational results show that the water-depth has a substantial effect on hydrodynamic force. The hydrodynamic force increases with the decrease of water-depth in shallow. Especially, in the ultra-shallow water these loads increase very evidently with the decrease of water-depth. The long-term values of hydrodynamic force increase with the decrease of the ratio of water-depth to reef height, and are about 10% larger than those of deep water when the ratio of water-depth to reef height is 4.0. However water-depth hardly affects the long term values of hydrodynamic force when the ratio of water-depth to reef height is larger than 6.0.

Research on pedestrian detection based on multi-level fine-grained YOLOX algorithm

Purpose-The purpose of the study is to address the problems of low accuracy and missed detection of occluded pedestrians and small target pedestrians when using the YOLOX general object detection algorithm for pedestrian *** study proposes a multi-level fine-grained YOLOX pedestrian detection ***/methodology/approach-First,to address the problem of the original YOLOX algorithm in obtaining a single perceptual field for the feature map before feature fusion,this study improves the PAFPN structure by adding the ResCoT module to increase the diversity of the perceptual field of the feature map and divides the pedestrian multi-scale features into finer ***,for the CSPLayer of the PAFPN,a weight gain-based normalization-based attention module(NAM)is proposed to make the model pay more attention to the context information when extracting pedestrian features and highlight the salient features of ***,the authors experimentally determined the optimal values for the confidence loss ***-The experimental results show that,compared with the original YOLOX algorithm,the AP of the improved algorithm increased by 2.90%,the Recall increased by 3.57%,and F1 increased by 2%on the pedestrian *** limitations/implications-The multi-level fine-grained YOLOX pedestrian detection algorithm can effectively improve the detection of occluded pedestrians and small target ***/value-The authors introduce a multi-level fine-grained ResCoT module and a weight gain-based NAM attention module.

OCTA characteristics in non-arteritic central retinal artery occlusion and correlation with visual acuity

AIM:To observe the retinal and choroidal circulations in patients with non-arteritic permanent central retinal artery occlusion(NA-CRAO)via optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA)and analyze their correlation with visual ***:Sixty-two eyes with clinically confirmed acute NA-CRAO were included in the study and divided into:A type(mild n=29),B type(moderate n=27)and C type(severe n=6)based on the degree of visual loss,retinal edema,and arterial blood flow delay in fundus fluorescence angiography(FFA).Contralateral healthy eyes were used as the control ***-corrected visual acuity(BCVA),slit lamp microscopy,indirect ophthalmoscopy,fundus color photography,OCTA,and FFA were ***’s correlation analysis was used to determine the correlations between retinal and choroidal vessels and visual ***:There were no statistically significant differences in age,gender,and intraocular pressure among the three types and the control group(P>0.05).Vessel density in deep capillary plexus(VD-DCP)significantly decreased(P<0.05)in all three types of NA-CRAO patients compared to the control *** density in superficial vascular plexus(VD-SVP)significantly decreased(P<0.05)in type A patients and choriocapillaris flow area significantly decreased(P<0.05)in type B and type C patients compared to the control group;while outer retinal flow areas significantly increased in the type A(P<0.05)and decreased in type C patients(P<0.05).The retinal thickness significantly increased in type C group(P<0.05).The VD-SVP at fovea in the type A was significantly lower than both of type B and *** VD-SVP at nasal parafovea in type A and B was significantly lower than type C(P<0.05).The logMAR BCVA of type A was significantly better than that of type B and C groups(P<0.05).Spearman’s correlation analysis showed that the logMAR BCVA was positively correlated with VD-SVP at fovea(r=0.679,P=0.031)and nasal parafovea(r=0.826,P=0.013).CONCLUSION:OCTA is valua

Is graphite lithiophobic or lithiophilic?

Graphite and lithium metal are two classic anode materials and their composite has shown promising performance for rechargeable batteries. However, it is generally accepted that Li metal wets graphite poorly,causing its spreading and infiltration difficult. Here we show that graphite can either appear superlithiophilic or lithiophobic, depending on the local redox potential. By comparing the wetting performance of highly ordered pyrolytic graphite, porous carbon paper(PCP), lithiated PCP and graphite powder, we demonstrate that the surface contaminants that pin the contact-line motion and cause contact-angle hysteresis have their own electrochemical-stability windows. The surface contaminants can be either removed or reinforced in a time-dependent manner, depending on whether the reducing agents(C6→Li C6) or the oxidizing agents(air, moisture) dominate in the ambient environment, leading to bifurcating dynamics of either superfast or superslow wetting. Our findings enable new fabrication technology for Li–graphite composite with a controllable Li-metal/graphite ratio and present great promise for the mass production of Li-based anodes for use in high-energy-density batteries.

Dear Editor,Lipogranuloma of the penis is defined as a foreign body reaction to lipids,hydrocarbons(paraffin tumors),silicones,methacrylate,hyaluronic acid,or collagen fillings.1 According to literature reports,some individuals attempt to augment their genitals with injections of illegal liquid paraffin oil.2,3 In recent years,increased reports of complications associated with lipogranuloma have led to a decline in the use of these paraffin oil injections.
