Qualitative and quantitative phytochemical analysis of selected mosses with different alcoholic solvents

This study was conducted to investigate the qualitative and quantitative phytochemical content of the crude extracts of Archidium ohioense,Pelekium gratum,and Hyophila involuta with different alcoholic solvents(ethanol,methanol,Seaman's Schnapps,fresh oil-palm wine,and fresh Raffia-palm wine).The mosses were collected from their natural populations on the central campus of the Obafemi Awolowo University,Ile-Ife,*** yield of the extracts was weighed for all the solvents,and the qualitative and quantitative evaluations of the extracts were carried out using standard *** results of phytochemical analysis of the crude extracts from the mosses showed the presence of saponins,cardiac glycosides,triterpenes,alkaloids,flavonoids,and *** quantitative phytochemical analysis of the crude extracts showed that ethanolic extracts of Hyophila involuta had the highest flavonoid content(288.37±0.10 mg RE/g),and Raffiapalm-wine extracts of Hyophila involuta had the highest saponin content(224.70±0.02 mg/g),while the methanolic extract of Archidium ohioense had the highest cardiac glycosides content(63.71±0.14 mg/g),and the Raffia-palm wine extract of Hyophila involuta had the highest alkaloids content(102.50±0.12 mg/g).Raffia-and oil-palm wines were observed to be the most effective solvents for all the mosses studied,followed by Seaman's Schnapp,while methanol and ethanol were less *** study concluded that the extracts of the mosses studied contain pharmacologically active constituents that can be used for therapeutic purposes.

The present article has been fine-tuned with the investigation of mixed convection Darcy-Forchheimer flow of ZnO-SAE50 oil nanolubricant over an inclined rotating disk under the influence of uniform applied magnetic field applied to various *** current study has been enriched with additional consideration of slip flow,thermal radiation,viscous dissipation,Joulian dissipation and internal *** view of augmentation of thermal conductivity of nanolubricant,a new micro-nano-convection model namely Patel model has been *** specialty of this model involves the effects of specific surface area and nano-convection due to Brownian motion of nanoparticles,kinetic theory based micro-convection,liquid layering and particle *** transformed governing equations have been solved numerically by using Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg *** analysis of the present study has shown that applied magnetic field,porosity of the medium,velocity slip and inertia coefficient account for the slowing down of radial as well as tangential flow of ZnO-SAE50 oil nanolubricant,thereby leading to an improvement in velocity and thermal boundary layers.

Irreversibility analysis of unsteady couette flow with variable viscosity

This paper investigates numerically the inherent irreversibility in unsteady generalized Couette flow between two parallel plates with variable viscosity. The nonlinear governing equations are derived from the Navier-Stokes equations and solved numerically using a semi-discretization finite difference method together with the Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg integration scheme. The profiles of velocity and the temperature obtained are used to compute the entropy generation number, Bejan number, skin friction and Nusselt number. The effects of embedded parameters on entire flow structure are presented graphically and discussed quantitatively.

Principal components methodology-A novel approach to forecasting production from liquid-rich shale(LRS)reservoirs

With increasing global demand for energy,the importance of unconventional shale oil and gas research cannot be *** oil and gas industry requires rapid and reliable means of forecasting *** traditional decline curve analysis(DCA)methods have been limited in their ability to satisfactorily forecast production from unconventional liquid-rich shale(LRS)*** is due to several causes ranging from the complicated production mechanisms to the ultra-low permeability in *** use of hybrid(combination)DCA models can improve ***,complexities associated with these techniques can still make their application quite tedious without proper diagnostic plots,correct use of model parameters and some knowledge of the production mechanisms *** work,therefore,presents a new statistical data-driven approach of forecasting production from LRS reservoirs called the Principal Components methodology(PCm).PCm is a technique that bypasses a lot of the difficulties associated with existing methods of forecasting and forecasts production with reasonable *** is a data-driven method of forecasting based on the statistical technique of principal components analysis(PCA).In our study,we simulated production of fluids with different compositions for 30 years with the aid of a commercial compositional *** then applied the Principal Components methodology(PCm)to the production data from several representative wells by using Singular Value Decomposition(SVD)to calculate the principal *** principal components were then used to forecast oil production from wells with production histories ranging from 0.5 to 3 years,and the results were compared to simulated *** of the PCm to field data is also included in this work.

Anti-diabetic and antioxidant effects of virgin coconut oil in alloxan induced diabetic male Sprague Dawley rats

Oxidative stress has been discovered to be involved in the progression of diabetes mellitus. The antioxidant properties of virgin coconut oil (VCO) amo.g other functions might have a beneficial effect in ameliorating the disease. This study was aimed to determine the glycemic and antioxidant effects of VCO in alloxan induced diabetic rats. 24 male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups as follows: control (C), diabetes untreated (DUT), diabetes treated with 7.5 ml/kg VCO (DT7.5) and diabetes treated with 10 ml/kg VCO (DT10). Alloxan (100 mg/kg b.w I.P) was used to induce diabetes and VCO was administered orally once daily for 4 weeks. Fasting blood glucose level was measured on Day 0 (72 hours post alloxan injection) and after 4 weeks. Glucose tolerance test was conducted on the 4th week as well as the determination of serum insulin and liver antioxidant parameters using standard biochemical methods. Values are means ± S.E.m., compared by ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc test. The results show that VCO significantly reduced the fasting blood glucose level in DT7.5 rats (132.4 ± 6.911) and DT10 rats (131.6 ± 12.2) are compared with DUT rats (320.4 ± 22.99) and improved the oral glucose tolerance. Serum insulin was increased in DT10 rats. GSH activities significantly increased p 10 rats (0.39 ± 0.022) when compared to DUT rats (0.032 ± 0.004). CAT activities also significantly increased p 7.5 (17.63 ± 0.61) and DT10 rats (30.88 ± 0.97) when compared to DUT rats (10.98 ± 0.6). SOD activities significantly increased p 0.05 in DT7.5 (2.634 ± 0.04) and DT10 rats (2.258 ± 0.32) when compared to DUT rats (1.366 ± 0.05) while mDA significantly reduced p 7.5 (49.16 ± 0.51) and DT10 (33.64 ± 0.42) rats when compared to DUT rats (99.93 ± 4.79). This study revealed that VCO has a hypoglycemic action, enhances insulin secretion and also ameliorates oxidative stress induced in type I (alloxan-induced diabetic) male rats.

Potentials of NPK and Organic Fertilizers on Growth Performance of Cashew （Anacardium occidentale L,） Seedlings on Degraded Typic Alfisol Soils in Ibadan, Nigeria

Sequel to complaints by cashew farmers on poor establishment rate of cashew seedlings on rehabilitated moribund cashew plantations in south western Nigeria, a fertilizer trial involving the use of organic materials （cow-dung, poultry droppings, cocoa and kola pod husks） compared to NPK and control （no fertilizer） treatments was conducted on the growth performance of cashew seedlings at Ibadan, Nigeria. The fertilizers were applied to supply 15 g N seedlingl in 3 replications. Cashew seedling growth parameters and dry matter yield were determined. Fertilizers resulted to consistently general higher plant height, girth, number of leaves and leaf area compared to NPK and control. The differences in the mean values were however not significantly different for girth but it was significant （P 〈 0.5） for plant height, number of leaves and leaf area, while there was no particular regular trend for plant number of branches. Plant root lengths were significantly higher using the organic fertilizers than NPK and control. Similar trend was obtained in the dry weight values for plant leaf, stem, root and total dry matter yield. There was however no consistent significant effect on NPK usage over control for all the parameters. It was therefore deduced that optimal growth performance and better establishment of cashew seedlings could be obtained with the use of organic fertilizers rather than inorganic fertilizer. The use of cocoa pod husk followed by cow-dung and poultry droppings were outstanding in better growth and dry matter yield performance of cashew seedlings and were advised for this purpose.
