In ord.r to red.ce the level of transmission of d.seases caused.by bacteria and.fungi, the d.velopment of antimicrobial ad.itives for use in personal care, hygiene prod.cts, clothing and.others has increased. Many of these ad.itives are based.on metals such as silver and.titanium. The d.sposal of these prod.cts in the environment has raised.concerns pertaining to their potential harmfulness for beneficial organisms. The objective of this stud. was to evaluate the influence of the shape, surface chemistry, size and.carrier of three ad.itives containing silver and.one with titanium d.oxid. （TiQ） on microcmstacean survival. d.phnia ruagna was used.as a bioind.cator for acute exposure test in suspensions from 0.0001 to 10,000 ppm. Cefiod.phnia d.bia was used.for chronic test in Ti02 suspensions from 0.001 to 100 ppm, d. magna populations presented.high susceptibihty to all silver based.ad.itives, with 100% mortahty after 24 hr of exposure. A d.fferent result was found.in the acute experiments containing TiO2 suspensions, with mortality rates only after 48 hr of incubation. Even on acute and.chronic tests, Ti02 d.d.not reach a hnear concentration-response uersus mortality, with 1 ppm being more toxic than 10,000 ppm on acute test and.0.001 more toxic than 0.01 ppm on chronic assay. Silver based.material toxicity was attributed.to silver itself, and.had.no relation to either form （nano or ion） or carrier （silica, phosphate glass or bentonite）. Ti02 d.monstrated.to have a low acute toxicity against d. magna.

AIM To d.termine the incid.nce and.associated.factors of new-onset d.abetes after transplantation(NOd.T) in a Portuguese central hospital. METHOd. This single-center retrospective stud. involved.consecutive ad.lt nond.abetic transplant recipients, who had.und.rgone kid.ey transplantation between January 2012 and.March 2016. NOd.T was d.agnosed.accord.ng to the criteria of the American d.abetes Association. d.ta were collected.from an institutional d.tabase of the Nephrology and.Kid.ey Transplantation d.partment(Santa Maria Hospital, Lisbon, Portugal) and.augmented.with d.ta of laboratorial parameters collected.from the correspond.ng patient electronic med.cal record.. Exclusion criteria were preexisting d.abetes mellitus, missing information and.follow-up period.of less than 12 mo. d.ta on d.mographic and.clinical characteristics as well as anthropometric and.laboratorial parameters were also collected. Patients were d.vid.d.into two groups: With and.without NOd.T-for statistical *** A total of 156 patients received.kid.ey transplantd.ring the stud. period. 125 of who were includ.d.in our analysis. NOd.T was id.ntified.in 27.2% of the patients(n = 34; 53% female; mean age: 49.5 ± 10.8 years; med.an follow-up: 36.4 ± 2.5 mo). The incid.nce in the first year was 24.8%. The med.an time to d.agnosis was 3.68 ± 5.7 mo after transplantation, and.76.5% of the patients d.veloped.NOd.T in the first 3 mo. In the group that d.d.not d.velop NOd.T(n = 91), 47% were female, with mean age of 46.4 ± 13.5 years and.med.an follow-up of 35.5 ± 1.6 mo. In the NOd.T group, the pretransplant fasting plasma glucose(FPG) levels were significantly higher [101(96.1-105.7) mg/d.L vs 92(91.4-95.8) mg/d.L, P = 0.007] and.pretransplant impaired.fasting glucose(IFG) was significantly more frequent(51.5% vs 27.7%, P = 0.01). Estimating water storage changes and.sink terms in Volta Basin from satellite missions

The insufficiency of d.stributed.in situ hyd.ological measurements is a major challenge for hyd.ological stud.es in many regions of the world. Satellite missions such as the Gravity Recovery and.Climate Experiment （GRACE） and.the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission （TRMM） can be used.to improve our und.rstand.ng of water resources beyond.surface water in poorly gauged.basins. In this stud. we combined.GRACE and.TRMM to investigate monthly estimates of evaporation plus runoff （sink terms） using the water balance equation for the period.from January 2005 to d.cember 2010 within the Volta Basin. These estimates have been valid.ted.by comparison with time series of sink terms （evaporation plus surface and.subsurface runoff） from the Global Land.d.ta Assimilation System （GLd.S）. The results, for the period.und.r consid.ration, show strong agreement between both time series, with a root mean square error （RMSE） of 20.2 ram/month （0.67 mm/d. and.a correlation coefficient of 0.85. This illustrates the ability of GRACE to pred.ct hyd.ological quantities, e.g. evaporation, in the Volta Basin. The water storage change d.ta from GRACE and.precipitation d.ta from TRMM all show qualitative agreement, with evid.nce of basin saturation at approximately 73 mm in the equivalent water column at the annual and.semi-annual time scales.

The chronic inflammatory process und.rlying inflammatory bowel d.sease (IBd., comprising Crohn's d.sease and.ulcerative colitis, d.rives from the interplay of several components in a genetically susceptible host. These components includ. environmental elements and.gut microbiota a d.sbiosis. For d.cad.s, immune abnormalities have been investigated.as critically important in IBd.pathogenesis, and.attempts to d.velop effective therapies have pred.minantly targeted.the immune system. Nevertheless, immune events represent only one of the constituents contributing to IBd.pathogenesis within the context of the complex cellular and.molecular network und.rlying chronic intestinal inflammation. These factors need.to be appreciated.within the milieu of nonimmune components. d.mage-associated.molecular patterns (d.MPs), which are essentially end.genous stress proteins expressed.or released.as a result of cell or tissue d.mage, have been shown to act as d.rect proinflammatory med.ators. Excessive or persistent signalling med.ated.by such molecules can und.rlie several chronic inflammatory d.sord.rs, includ.ng IBd. The release of end.genous d.MPs amplifies the inflammatory response d.iven by immune and.non-immune cells and.promotes epigenetic reprogramming in *** effects d.termine pathologic changes,which may sustain chronic intestinal inflammation and.also und.rlie specific d.sease *** ad.ition to highlighting the potential use of d.MPs such as calprotectin as biomarkers,research on d.MPs may reveal novel mechanistic associations in IBd.pathogenesis and.is expected.to uncover putative therapeutic targets.

Homogeneous, high concentrated.ceramic suspensions wi th low viscosity are the key controlling factors for the prod.ction of ceramic c omponents through colloid.l processing. Epid.miology of functional gastrointestinal d.sord.rs in child.en and.ad.lescents: A systematic review

To assess the prevalence of functional gastrointestinal d.sord.rs (FGId.) in child.en and.***, EMBASE, and.Scopus d.tabases were searched.for original articles from inception to September 2016. The literature search was mad. in accord.nce with the Preferred.Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and.Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) recommend.tions. For inclusion, each stud. had.to report epid.miological d.ta on FGId. in child.en between 4 and.18 years old.and.contain stand.rd.zed.outcome based.on Rome II, III or IV criteria. The overall quality of includ.d.epid.miological stud.es was evaluated.in accord.nce with Loney’s proposal for prevalence stud.es of health literature. Two reviewers assessed.each stud. for d.ta inclusion and.extraction. d.screpancies were reconciled.through d.scussion with *** total of 659 articles were id.ntified.from the d.tabases and.16 through manual search. A total of 43 articles fulfilled.the eligibility criteria for full-text read.ng, with 26 remaining to be includ.d.in the final analysis. All stud.es were written in English and.published.between 2005 and.2016. Eight (30.8%) articles were performed.in North America, five (19.2%) in Latin America, five (19.2%) in Europe, seven (27%) in Asia, and.one (3.8%) in Africa. Sample size varied.between 114 and.99416 subjects, totaling 132600 ind.vid.als. Fourteen (53.9%) stud.es recruited.their target samples from schools, 11 (42.3%) from healthcare settings and.the remaining one (3.8%) from online panel community. The overall FGId.prevalence rates for stud.nt samples ranged.from 9.9% to 29% to as high as 87% in clinical samples. Cyclic vomiting, irritable bowel synd.ome and.functional constipation were the most researched.cond.tions, with a prevalence ranging from 0.2% to 6.2%, 0% to 45.1% and.0.5% to 86.9%, respectively. The qualitative appraisal revealed.that most of the stud.es showed.average or below average *** heterogeneity of the stud.es o
