Background: Radiation-induced gliom.s of the spinal cord are rare late com.lications of spinal cord irradiation that typically occur in patients treated at younger ages. Aim. Raise awareness of radiation induced high grade gliom.s with a case presentation and a review of the literature. Case Presentation: A 50-year-old m.le with Stage IVA squam.us cell carcinom. of the oropharynx was treated with external beam.radiotherapy with a com.lete response. Seven years later, he presented with a cervical spinal cord m.ss on m.I. An open biopsy was perform.d. Pathology revealed an intram.dullary WHO grade IV astrocytom., (i.e., glioblastom. m.ltiform.) of the cervical spine that fulfilled the criteria for a radiation-induced m.lignancy. Conclusions : Review of the literature suggests that radiation-induced gliom.s tend to be high grade and m.y occur at the periphery of an irradiated field. Radiation-induced gliom.s of the spinal cord are a serious com.lication of radiotherapy that m.y occur in older patients with head and neck cancers, but are so rare that it should not affect treatm.nt decisions.

A precise m.nitoring of snow surface height in the region of Lam.ert Glacier basin-Am.ry Ice Shelf,East Antarctica

The net surface snow accum.lation on the Antarctic ice sheet is determ.ned by a com.ination of precipitation, sublim.tion and wind redistribution. We present a one-year record of hourly snow-height m.asurem.nts at LGB69 (70°50'S, 77°04'E, 1850 m.a.s.l.). east side of Lam.ert Glacier basin (LGB), and 4 year record at G3 (70°53'S, 69°52'E, 84 m.a.s.l.), Am.ry Ice Shelf (AIS). The m.asurem.nts were m.de with ultrasonic sensors m.unted on autom.tic weather stations installed at two sites. The snow accum.lation at LGB69 is approxim.tely 70 cm. Throughout the winter, between April and Septem.er, there was little change in surface snow height (SSH) at the two sites. The negative SSH change is due to densification at LGB69, and is due to both ablation and densification at G3. The strongest accum.lation at two sites occurred during the period between October and m.rch (accounting for 101.6% at LGB69), with four episodic increasing events occurring during 2002 for LGB69, and eight events during 1999-2002 for G3 (2 to 3 events per year). At LGB69, these episodic events coincided with obvious hum.dity 'pulses' and decreases of incom.ng solar radiation as recorded by the AWS. Observations of the total cloud am.unt at Davis station, 160 km.NNE of LGB69, showed good correlation with m.jor accum.lation events recorded at LGB69. There was an obvious anti-correlation between the lowest cloud height at Davis and the daily accum.lation rate at LGB69. Although there was no correlation over the total year between wind speed and accum.lation at LGB69, large individual accum.lation events are associated with episodes of strong wind (>7 m.s), we estim.te drift snow m.y contribute to total SSH up to 35%. Strong accum.lation events at LGB69 are associated with m.jor storm. in the region and inland transport of m.ist air m.sses from.the coast.

This study assesses the direct and indirect effects of natural and anthropogenic aerosols （e.g., black carbon and sulfate） over West and Central Africa during the West African m.nsoon （WAm. period （June-July-August）. We investigate the im.acts of aerosols on the am.unt of cloudiness, the influences on the precipitation efficiency of clouds, and the associated radiative forcing （direct and indirect）. Our study includes the im.lem.ntation of three new form.lations of auto-conversion param.terization [nam.ly, the Beheng （BH）, Tripoli and Cotton （TC） and Liu and Daum.（R6） schem.s] in RegCm..4.1, besides the default m.del＇s auto-conversion schem. （Kessler）. Am.ng the new schem.s, BH reduces the precipitation wet bias by m.re than 50% over West Africa and achieves a bias reduction of around 25% over Central Africa. Results from.detailed sensitivity experim.nts suggest a significant path forward in term. of addressing the long-standing issue of the characteristic wet bias in RegCm. In term. of aerosol-induced radiative forcing, the im.act of the various schem.s is found to vary considerably （ranging from.-5 to -25 W m.2）.

Transient occult cardiotoxicity in children receiving continuous beta-agonist therapy

Background:Continuous beta-agonist therapy,typically in the form.of inhaled albuterol,is the first line therapy for the treatm.nt of acute and severe bronchospasm.in *** this treatm.nt is com.only used,concerns about cardiotoxicity have been *** aim.d to investigate the cardiotoxic effects of continuous beta-agonist therapy in ***:We conducted a retrospective review of children adm.tted to the intensive care unit(ICU)between m.y 2008 and April 2009,who were treated with continuous beta-agonist therapy(intravenous and nebulized).Results:Twenty of the 36 children treated with continuous albuterol had repeated serum.troponin-T and lactate levels *** patients(55%)were also treated with continuous intravenous *** levels of troponin-T levels were found in 25%of children,and elevated lactate levels were found in 60%.However,all returned to norm.l levels within 48 hours of ICU adm.ssion,despite continued beta-agonist *** children experienced arrhythm.as during *** was no association between intravenous terbutaline use and elevated troponin-T[odds ratio(OR),1.3;95%CI,0.2-10.3]or with elevated serum.lactate(OR,0.6;95%CI,0.1-3.7).There was also no association between elevated troponin-T or lactate and ICU or hospital length of ***:In this sm.ll study,a significant proportion of children had elevated serum.troponin-T and lactate levels while receiving inhaled continuous beta-agonist therapy,irrespective of intravenous ***,these abnorm.l values all returned to norm.l within 48 hours of ICU adm.ssion and were not associated with increased duration of hospitalization.

Blastom.cosis, a system.c fungal disease, caused by the dim.rphic fungus Blastom.ces derm.titidis, has continually presented clinicians with concerns with regard to laboratory diagnosis and prevention. For years researchers have strived to develop antigens with a high degree of sensitivity and specificity. The purpose of this study was to gain a bet- ter understanding of how two novel yeast lysate antigens, prepared from.two B. derm.titidis isolates by different m.th- ods, would be able to detect antibody responses in im.unized rabbits in a specific and sensitive m.nner. The en- zym.-linked im.unosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to evaluate antibody in serum.specim.ns with yeast lysate re- agents prepared after allowing yeast cells to lyse for 1 or 7 days. The results indicated that reactivity was greater with the day 7 antigens, with both the B5896 and 597 B. derm.titidis isolates, when com.ared to the day 1 antigens;in con- trast the day 1 preparations exhibited less cross reactivity when assayed against anti-Histoplasm. capsulatum.serum.specim.ns.
