Functional Inferences of Environmental Coccolithovirus Biodiversity

The cosmopolitan calcifying alga Emiliania huxleyi is one of the most abundant bloom forming coccolithophore species in the oceans and plays an important role in global biogeochemical *** are a maj.r cause of coccolithophore bloom termination and have been studied in laboratory,mesocosm and open ocean ***,little is known about the dynamic interactions between the host and its viruses,and less is known about the natural diversity and role of functionally important genes within natural coccolithovirus ***,we investigate the temporal and spatial distribution of coccolithoviruses by the use of molecular fingerprinting techniques PCR,DGGE and genomic *** natural biodiversity of the virus genes encoding the maj.r capsid protein(MCP)and serine palmitoyltransferase(SPT)were analysed in samples obtained from the Atlantic Meridional Transect(AMT),the North Sea and the L4 site in the Western Channel *** discovered nine new coccolithovirus genotypes across the AMT and L4 site,with the maj.rity of MCP sequences observed at the deep chlorophyll maximum layer of the sampled sites on the *** also found four new SPT gene variations in the North Sea and at *** translated fragments and the full protein sequence of SPT from laboratory strains EhV-86 and EhV-99B1 were modelled and revealed that the theoretical fold differs among *** identified in the structural distance between the two domains of the SPT protein may have an impact on the catalytic capabilities of its active *** summary,the combined use of‘standard’markers(***),in combination with metabolically relevant markers(***)are useful in the study of the phylogeny and functional biodiversity of coccolithoviruses,and can provide an interesting intracellular insight into the evolution of these viruses and their ability to infect and replicate within their algal hosts.

If the 20th century was the age of mapping and controlling the external world,the 21st century is the biomedical age of mapping and controlling the biological internal *** biomedical age is bringing new technological breakthroughs for sensing and controlling human biomolecules,cells,tissues,and organs,which underpin new frontiers in the biomedical discovery,data,biomanufacturing,and translational *** article reviews what we believe will be the next wave of biomedical engineering(BME)education in support of the biomedical age,what we have termed BME *** 2.0 was announced on October 122017 at BMES 49(https://***/news-events/news/miller-opens-2017-bmes-annual-meeting-with-vision-for-new-bme-era/).We present several principles upon which we believe the BME 2.0 curriculum should be constructed,and from these principles,we describe what view as the foundations that form the next generations of curricula in support of the BME *** core principles of BME 2.0 education are(a)educate students bilingually,from day 1,in the languages of modern molecular biology and the analytical modeling of complex biological systems;(b)prepare every student to be a biomedical data scientist;(c)build a unique BME community for discovery and innovation via a vertically integrated and convergent learning environment spanning the university and hospital systems;(d)champion an educational culture of inclusive excellence;and(e)codify in the curriculum ongoing discoveries at the frontiers of the discipline,thus ensuring BME 2.0 as a launchpad for training the future leaders of the biotechnology *** envision that the BME 2.0 education is the path for providing every student with the training to lead in this new era of engineering the future of medicine in the 21st century.

Petrography and chronology of lunar meteorite Northwest Africa 6950

Northwest Africa(NWA) 6950 is an olivine-gabbro lunar meteorite that has a distinctly different petrographic texture from other lunar basalts. In this contribution, we report the petrography, mineralogy,and U-Pb geochronology of baddeleyite and phosphate in this lunar meteorite and make a comparison with other NWA 773 paired meteorites. NWA 6950 consists mainly of coarse-grained olivine, pyroxene,and plagioclase, with minor ilmenite, chromite, troilite, baddeleyite, taenite, and apatite. The abundant rounded to euhedral olivine has a limited Fo ranging from 68 to 69. Pyroxenes include both augite and pigeonite, with a narrow range of Mg#=71–80, and composition, respectively, EnFsWoand EnFsWo. Plagioclase is mainly anhedral, conforming to the crystal margins of olivine and pyroxene. The plagioclase grains are elongated and several hundreds of microns in length. Raman spectra shows that plagioclase has been transformed into maskelynite, which is very calcic(An87-95) with low sodium and very low potassium(Ab4-9 Or 0.6-3.7). The weighted mean207 Pb/206 Pb ages of baddeleyite and phosphate measured using a sensitive high resolution ion micro probe(SHRIMP II) are 3119 ± 16 Ma(n = 9, MSWD= 2.5)(mean squared weighted deviates, MSWD) and 3119 ± 18 Ma(n = 15, MSWD = 2.1), respectively,giving the crystallization age of the meteorite. NWA 6950 has similar mineral compositions, geochemical characteristics, and an almost identical age of crystallization to the magnesian gabbro of the NWA 773 *** conclude that NWA 6950 and NWA 773 are paired meteorites, which crystallize at ca. 3119 Ma, and represent magmatic activities in the KREEP(potassium(K), rare earth elements(REE) and phosphorus(P) rich lunar material) region of the Moon.

Thanks to recent advances in manufacturing technology, aerospace system designers have many more options to fabricate high-quality, low-weight, high-capacity, cost-effective filters. Aside from traditional methods such as stamping, drilling and milling, many new approaches have been widely used in filter-manufacturing practices on account of their increased processing abilities. How- ever, the restrictions on costs, the need for studying under stricter conditions such as in aggressive fluids, the complicity in design, the workability of materials, and others have made it difficult to choose a satisfactory method from the newly developed processes, such as, photochemical machining （PCM）, photo electroforming （PEF） and laser beam machining （LBM） to produce small, inexpensive, lightweight aerospace filters. This article appraises the technical and economical viability of PCM, PEF, and LBM to help engineers choose the fittest approach to turn out aerospace filters.

Influences and drivers of woody debris movement in urban watercourses

It is recognised that the blockage of culverts by woody debris can result in an increased risk of infrastructure damage and *** date,debris transport analysis has focused on regional fluvial systems and large woody debris,both in flume and field *** the social and economic risk associated with urban flooding,and as urban drainage design shifts away from subsurface piped network reliance,there is an increasing need to understand debris movement in urban *** prediction of urban watercourse small woody debris(SWD)movement,both quantity and risk,has undergone only limited analysis predominantly due to lack of field *** paper describes the development of a methodology to enable the collection of accurate and meaningful SWD residency and transportation data from *** presented research examines the limitations and effective function of PIT tag technology to collect SWD transport data in the field appropriate for risk and prediction *** integrated transponder(PIT)technology provides a method to collect debris transport data within the urban *** this study,the tags are installed within small woody debris and released at known locations into a small urban natural watercourse enabling monitoring of movement and travel *** velocity and detention are collated with solute time of travel,watercourse and point flow characteristics to identify the relationships between these key *** work presented tests three hypotheses:firstly,that the potential for unobstructed or un-detained SWD movement increases with flow velocity and water ***,that SWD travel distance,and the resistance forces along this travel path,influence SWD transport ***,the relationship between SWD and channel dimensions is examined with the aim of advancing representative debris transport prediction modelling.

WATERSHED SEDIMENT YIELD AND RANGELAND HEALTH

Much of the western United States is considered to be rangeland. Rangeland areas produce a diverse mix of benefits and products, and their overall health, in an ecosystem context, is of national *** sediment yield from a watershed is an integrated expression of all soil erosion and sedimentation processes occurring within it, it is logical that we seek to quantify and interpret sediment yield in the context of soil/site stability and watershed function as measures of rangeland health. Depth integrated suspended sediment samples were combined with runoff measured using flumes to calculate sediment discharge and yield from two experimental watersheds in the southwestern USA. Sediment yield estimates for individual runoff events were summed to produce estimates of annual sediment yield from these two rangeland watersheds. Estimated annual sediment yield data were then combined with the concepts of sediment delivery ratio and soil loss tolerance to assess soil/site stability at the watershed scale. Analyses suggest that using sediment yield estimates from distributed watershed processes with time-space averaged soil loss tolerance values is inconsistent. Thus, new distributed soil/site stability criteria are needed to replace the soil loss tolerance concept in assessing the health of rangeland watersheds. Sediment transport/yield models are used at interior points in a watershed to simulate distributed sedimentation processes. However, application of these models requires calibration and validation data and is thus dependent upon the availability of sediment concentration and yield databases. Therefore, additional efforts are required to build sediment yield databases through rescue of historical data along with continued measurement and monitoring at existing and new sampling sites.

Introduction: Skin prick testing (SPT) is a common test to diagnose IgE sensitization and the rate of adverse reactions is very low. Case Presentation: 29-year-old woman with anaphylactic reaction to routine SPT with 11 allergens (aero and food). Discussion: Allergy profile included multiple food and inhalant allergies, polysensitization, prior episode of anaphylaxis to mushrooms, active eczema and active hay fever but not active asthma. Conclusion: Anaphylaxis to SPT, although a rare event, is unpredictable necessitating availability of appropriate personnel and adequate resuscitation facilities for all testing.

The transport of woody debris from urban surfaces,through local urban waterways,to constriction and blockage risk locations is not well *** trials have identified debris and watercourse dimensions as influential factors on debris movement,and large woody debris movement has been traced in the natural rural environment using time series photography,active transponders,and field *** novel passive transponder technology,small woody debris has been traced through an urban case study watercourse to establish key influential factors on urban debris *** incorporating urban debris transport detail into the source and deposition process,a complete picture of urban debris transport can be created,supporting effective culvert and trash screen design,watercourse maintenance and blockage risk *** case study highlights that factors beyond watercourse depth and velocity are influential in debris movement within an urban *** dimension and source location upstream are shown to significantly affect the potential for debris to reach a downstream constriction,illustrating a possible distance limitation in nuisance flow debris blockage risk.
