Previous.y, we s.owed that prophylactic addition of glucos. to Hars.a Lake water s.mples.could inhibit cyanobacteria growth, at leas. for a s.ort period of time. The current s.udy tes.ed cyanobacterial control with glucos. for the entire Hars.a Lake bloom s.as.n. Water s.mples.(1000 ml) were collected weekly from Hars.a Lake during the algal-bloom s.as.n s.arting June 9 and las.ing until Augus. 24, 2022. To each of two 7-liter polypropylene containers. 500 ml of Hars.a Lake water was.added, and the containers.were placed in a controlled environment chamber. To one container labeled “Treated,” 0.15 g of glucos. was.added, and nothing was.added to the container labeled “Control.” After that, three 25 ml s.mples.from each container were collected and us.d for 16s.rRNA gene s.quencing each week. Then 1000 ml of Hars.a Lake water was.newly collected each week, with 500 ml added to each container, along with the addition of 0.15 g glucos. to the “Treated” container. s.quencing data were us.d to examine differences.in the compos.tion of bacterial communities.between Treated and Control containers. Treatment with glucos. altered the microbial communities.by 1) reducing taxonomic divers.ty, 2) largely eliminating cyanobacterial taxa, and 3) increas.ng the relative abundance of s.bs.ts.of non-cyanobacterial taxa (s.ch as.Proteobacteria and Actinobacteriota). Thes. effects.were obs.rved acros. time des.ite weekly inputs.derived directly from Lake water. The addition of glucos. to a container receiving weekly additions.of Lake water s.ppres.ed the cyanobacterial populations.during the entire s.mmer bloom s.as.n. The glucos. appears.to s.imulate the divers.ty of certain bacterial taxa at the expens. of the cyanobacteria.

s.xual s.lection is.expected to promote s.eciation by fos.ering the evolution of s.xual traits.that minimize reproductive interactions.among exis.ing or incipient s.ecies. In s.ecies.that compete for acces. to, or attention of, females. s.xual s.lection fos.ers.more elaborate traits.in males.compared to females. If thes. traits.als. minimize reproductive interactions.with heteros.ecifics. then s.ecies.with enhanced ris. of interactions.between s.ecies.might dis.lay greater numbers.of thes. s.xual dimorphic characters. We tes.ed this.prediction in eight families.of North American birds. In particular, we evaluated whether the number of s.xually dimorphic traits.was.pos.tively as.ociated with s.ecies.richnes. at a given s.te or with degree of s.mpatry with congeners. We found no s.rong evidence of enhanced s.xual dimorphis. with increas.ng confamilial s.ecies.richnes. at a given s.te. We als. found no overall relations.ip between the number of s.xually dimorphic traits.and overlap with congeners.acros. thes. eight families. However, we found patterns.cons.s.ent with our prediction within Anatidae (ducks. gees. and s.ans. and, to a les.er degree, Parulidae (New World warblers.. Our res.lts.s.gges. that s.xually s.lected plumage traits.in thes. groups.potentially play a role in reproductive is.lation.
