A systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the effect of sperm DNA damage on in vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection outcome

Sperm DNA damage is prevalent among infertile men and is known to influence natural reproduction. However, the impact of sperm DNA damage on assisted reproduction outcomes remains controversial. here, we conducted a meta-analysis of studies on sperm DNA damage （assessed by SCSA, tUNEL, SCD, or Comet assay） and clinical pregnancy after IVF and/or ICSI treatment from MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PUBMED database searches for this analysis. We identified 41 articles （with a total of 56 studies） including 16 IVF studies, 24 ICSI studies, and 16 mixed （IVF ＋ ICSI） studies. these studies measured DNA damage （by one of four assays： 23 SCSA, 18 tUNEL, 8 SCD, and 7 Comet） and included a total of 8068 treatment cycles （3734 IVF, 2282 ICSI, and 2052 mixed IVF ＋ ICSI）. the combined OR of 1.68 （95% Ch 1.49-1.89; P 〈 0.0001） indicates that sperm DNA damage affects clinical pregnancy following IVF and/or ICSI treatment. In addition, the combined OR estimates of IVF （16 estimates, OR = 1.65; 95% CI： 1.34-2.04; P 〈 0.0001）, ICSI （24 estimates, OR = 1.31; 95% Ch 1.08-1.59; P = 0.0068）, and mixed IVF ＋ ICSI studies （16 estimates, OR = 2.37; 95% Ch 1.89-2.97; P〈 0.0001） were also statistically significant. there is sufficient evidence in the existing literature suggesting that sperm DNA damage has a negative effect on clinical pregnancy following IVF and/or ICSI treatment.

· AIM: to investigate and quantify changes in the branching patterns of the retina vascular network in diabetes using the fractal analysis method.·MEtHODS: this was a clinic-based prospective study of 172 participants managed at the Ophthalmological Clinic of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, between January 2012 and December 2013. A set of 172 segmented and skeletonized human retinal images, corresponding to both normal(24 images) and pathological(148 images)states of the retina were examined. An automatic unsupervised method for retinal vessel segmentation was applied before fractal analysis. the fractal analyses of the retinal digital images were performed using the fractal analysis software Image J. Statistical analyses were performed for these groups using Microsoft Office Excel2003 and Graph Pad In Stat software.·RESULtS: It was found that subtle changes in the vascular network geometry of the human retina are influenced by diabetic retinopathy(DR) and can be estimated using the fractal geometry. the average of fractal dimensions D for the normal images(segmented and skeletonized versions) is slightly lower than the corresponding values of mild non-proliferative DR(NPDR) images(segmented and skeletonized versions).the average of fractal dimensions D for the normal images(segmented and skeletonized versions) is higher than the corresponding values of moderate NPDR images(segmented and skeletonized versions). the lowestvalues were found for the corresponding values of severe NPDR images(segmented and skeletonized versions).· CONCLUSION: the fractal analysis of fundus photographs may be used for a more complete understanding of the early and basic pathophysiological mechanisms of diabetes. the architecture of the retinal microvasculature in diabetes can be quantitative quantified by means of the fractal *** abnormalities on retinal imaging may elucidate early mechanistic pathways for microvascular complications and distinguish patients with DR from health

Photonics integrated circuitry would benefit considerably from the ability to arbitrarily control waveguide cross-sections with high precision and low loss,in order to provide more degrees of freedom in manipulating propagating ***,we report a new method for femtosecond laser writing of optical-fiber-compatible glass waveguides,namely spherical phase-induced multicore waveguide(SPIM-WG),which addresses this challenging task with three-dimensional on-chip light *** in the heating regime with high scanning speed,precise deformation of cross-sections is still achievable along the waveguide,with shapes and sizes finely controllable of high resolution in both horizontal and vertical transversal *** observed that these waveguides have high refractive index contrast of 0.017,low propagation loss of 0.14 dB/cm,and very low coupling loss of 0.19 dB coupled from a single-mode ***-WG devices were easily fabricated that were able to perform on-chip beam rotation through varying angles,or manipulate the polarization state of propagating light for target *** also demonstrated SPIM-WG mode converters that provide arbitrary adiabatic mode conversion with high efficiency between symmetric and asymmetric nonuniform modes;examples include circular,elliptical modes,and asymmetric modes from ppKtP(periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate)waveguides which are generally applied in frequency conversion and quantum light *** inside optical glass,these waveguides and devices have the capability to operate across ultra-broad bands from visible to infrared *** compatibility with optical fiber also paves the way toward packaged photonic integrated circuitry,which usually needs input and output fiber connections.

Northern labyrinths are stone constructions of different shapes, dating back to III-I century BC. they mainly appear on capes on peninsulas and islands up to 13-25 metresabove the sea level. their area begins from Scilly Isles (England) and in the White Sea (Russia). Opinions of scientists concerning their designation are controversial. Assumptions about their practical meaning haven’t been proved: no burials have been found underneath;fishing equipment cannot be located so far from the area of tides. Most of the scientists link labyrinths with the sphere of spiritual culture: sanctuaries, altars, sacred places, schemes of rituals and magical centers. Assumptions about calendar designation link the picture of labyrinth with schemes of orbits of the Sun, the Moon, planets and stars. However they do not explain the application of this technology. the author’s concept is based on the opposite astronomical alignment by the shade of gnomon and considers peculiarities of the geographical space of Northern regions (polar days and white nights). the aim of the research is to prove that the key to decoding the picture of a classic Northern labyrinth is a gnomon located in the centre of the construction. Field research has been conducted on Zayztskiy Island in Solovetskiy Archipelago. Experiments of imitation modeling have been done, analysis of linguistic and toponymic materials, archeological, astronomical, ethnographical and mythological and other sources has been implemented. the research has proved that observations of the shade can help to create a calendar in a shape of a bispiral labyrinth. the structure of labyrinth is convenient for defining the North, dividing daytime and defining geographical altitude of the observation point. this paper analyzes physical and visual accessibility at Moinhos de Vento Park in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, through Space Syntax methods. the Park presents a particularity in its configuration： it is crossed by an important avenue in the city that splits it in two portions linked by an elevated pedestrian path. the two portions of the park have different accessibility degrees and intensity of use due to -- we believed -- the way they are inserted in the urban pattern. Both the barrier caused by the avenue crossing the park and the differences of connectedness of each portion to its surrounding grid result in the level of integration occurring in different ways, turning the east portion less intensely used. the all-line and visibility integration maps showed that this was the case, and confirmed that spatial configuration plays an important role in rendering the east portion less integrated and in explaining the more intense use of the west portion. Integration maps showed that the most integrated areas are indeed the most used ones, although line and visibility integration differed slightly as to the exact location. this difference was probably due to the way barriers were modeled, since permeability took into account the paths while visibility considered all the ground as a whole, provided there were no barriers to sight. Another explanation for the difference is the lake located at the center of the west portion which contributed to this location＇s visual integration but, on the other hand, displaced line integration to the larger convex space to the north.

Assessment of ghrelin and leptin receptor levels in postmenopausal women who received oral or transdermal menopausal hormonal therapy

Objective： In postmenopausal women, an increased leptin concentration and reduced levels of ghrelin and adiponectin were observed. the aim of this study was to evaluate the concentrations of the active form of ghrelin, total ghrelin, leptin receptor, lipoprotein（a）（Lp（a））, and plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 （PAl-l） in postmenopausal women who received oral or transdermal menopausal hormonal therapy （MHt）. Methods： the study involved 76 healthy women： 46 women aged from 44 to 58 years who received oral （26） or transdermal （20） MHt; the control group consisted of 30 women aged from 44 to 54 years who did not receive MHt. the plasma concentrations of total ghrelin, the active form of ghrelin, Lp（a）, and PAI-I：Ag were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay （ELISA）. the concentration of the leptin receptor was measured by enzyme immunometric assay （EIA）. Results： We observed a significantly higher concentration o~ total ghrelin and the active form of ghrelin in women who received transdermal MHt in comparison with those who took oral MHt. We also found a significantly lower concentration of total ghrelin in women who received oral MHt compared with the control group. A higher concentration of PAl-1 ：Ag was found in the group of women who took transdermal MHt in comparison with those who took oral MHt and with the control group. the differences were statistically significant. Additionally, we found a significant negative correlation between the concentrations of total ghrelin and PAl-1 ：Ag and a positive correlation between the concentrations of total ghrelin and leptin receptor in women who received transdermal MHt. Conclusions： the study showed that women who used transdermal MHt had higher levels of total ghrelin than women who took oral MHt. this indicates a beneficial effect of the transdermal route of MHt.
