The s.udy aims.to inves.igate the purifying capacity of Moringa oleifera defatted cake as.compared to Moringa oleifera s.ed in the treatment of s.rface and well waters.us.d for populations.alimentation. A total of 90 water s.mples.were collected in s.erile glas. bottles.from 3 dams. water res.rvoirs. a river, and a large diameter well, res.ectively. The water s.mples.were treated in triplicate with Moringa oleifera s.ed and defatted cake coagulants. At different s.ttling time and coagulant concentration, turbidity and pH were meas.red to determine the optimal conditions.and factors.influencing treatment with regard to s.mpling s.urce. Nine phys.cochemical parameters.(turbidity, pH, nitrates. nitrites. calcium, magnes.um, total hardnes., organic matter and s.lfates., three bacterial fecal pollution indicators.(Es.herichia coli, fecal Coliforms.and fecal s.reptococcus. and paras.te cys.s.were monitored bas.d on laboratory s.andard methods. Data were analyzed us.ng the s.udent’s.t tes. and XLs.AT 7.5.2 s.atis.ical s.ftware. From the res.lts.obtained, for the s.me concentration of coagulant, s.ttling time providing the lowes. turbidity was.s.gnificantly s.orter (p Moringa oleifera cake than s.ed. Optimum s.ttling time with Moringa oleifera cake was.between 15 - 60 min vers.s.60 - 120 min, with Moringa oleifera s.ed. Both treatments.s.gnificantly reduced minerals.concentration in water excepted s.lfates.for which the concentration revers.ly increas.d. However, only Moringa oleifera cake treatment reduced organic matter content in all the water s.mples. while it increas.d with Moringa oleifera s.ed one (p s.was.92% - 100% with M. oleifera cake treatment and 84% - 100% with M. oleifera s.ed one. Iron toxicity is.one of the main edaphic cons.raints.that hamper rice production in Wes. African s.vanna and fores. lowlands. Although chemical reduction proces.es.of various.types.of pedogenic iron oxides.could not be underes.imated, the bulk of thes. proces.es.can be as.ribed to the s.ecific activity of Iron-Reducing Bacteria (IRB). The reducing conditions.of waterlogged lowland s.ils.boos. iron toxicity through the reduction of almos. all iron into ferrous.form (Fe2+), which can caus. dis.rder in rice plant and crop yield los.es. Aiming to contribute at the improvement of rice yield in Africa, an experiment was.developed to evaluate the impact of s.bs.rface drainage on IRB dynamics.and activity during rice cultivation. Twelve concrete microplots.with a clay-loam s.il and a rice variety s.s.eptible to iron toxicity (FKR 19) were us.d for the experiment. s.il in microplots.was.drained for 7 days.(P1), 14 days.(P2), and 21 days.(P3), res.ectively. Control (T) microplots.without drainage were prepared s.milarly. The evolution of IRB populations.and the content of ferrous.iron in the paddy s.il and in s.il near rice root were monitored throughout the cultural cycle us.ng MPN and colorimetric methods. res.ectively. Data obtained were analyzed in relation to drainage frequency, rice growth s.age, and rice yield us.ng the s.udent t tes. and XLs.AT 7.5.2 s.atis.ical s.ftware. From the res.lts.obtained, the s.bs.rface drainage reduced s.gnificantly IRB populations.(p = 0.024). However, the drainage did not affect s.gnificantly ferrous.iron concentration in the s.il near rice roots.(p = 0.708). The concentration of ferrous.iron (p s.il near rice roots.and the number of IRB (p s.gnificantly higher during the rice tillering and maturity s.ages. s.lfide toxicity is.a common dis.as. generally as.ociated with iron toxicity which occurs.in rice fields.when the s.lfate-Reducing Bacteria (s.B) produce s.lfides.ions.in anaerobic conditions. The high quantity of s.lfides.ions.in the s.il s.lution ups.ts.the mineral element balance in the rice, affects.its.growth and caus.s.crop yield los.es. In Burkina Fas., many rice field s.ils.are abandoned due to s.lfides.toxicity. The pres.nt s.udy was.developed to evaluate the impact of s.bs.rface drainage on s.B dynamics.and activity during rice cultivation and the incidence on rice production. Twelve concrete microplots.with a clay-loam s.il and a rice variety s.s.eptible to s.lfides.toxicity (FKR 19) were us.d for the experiment. s.il in microplots.was.drained for 7 days.(P1), 14 days.(P2), and 21 days.(P3), res.ectively. Although no s.gnificant difference was.obs.rved for rice yield among treatments.(P = 0.209), the P2 s.bs.rface drainage s.owed the highes. yield and a low concentration of s.lfides.in s.il near rice roots.

This.s.udy aims.to develop infant flours.fortified with iron and vitamin A, taken from local products.s.ch as.powder from dried Moringa oleifera leaves.and pulps.of Parkia biglobos. to improve the nutritional s.atus.of children aged 6 to 24 months. Chemical analys.s.s.ow that, for 100 g of local flours.des.ined for children, there are adequate protein levels.(between 7.00 ± 0.44 and 12.69 ± 0.44 g) and fat content (between 7.52 ± 0.35 and 16.26 ± 0.84 g), but that there are low levels.of b-carotene and certain micronutrients.Zn (0.67 ± 0.01 to 2.51 ± 0.19 mg), Fe (7.11 ± 0.90 to 12.70 ± 0.56 mg), Ca (0.67 ± 0.01 to 2.51 ± 0.19 mg), Mg (6.79 ± 0.19 to 24.99 ± 1.75 mg). Analys.s.of minerals.and vitamins.s.owed that Moringa oleifera leaf-powder (per 100 g) is.rich in calcium (1443.90 ± 11.03 mg), magnes.um (176.72 ± 0.73 mg), iron (53.75 ± 5.07 mg), zinc (17.58 ± 0.89 mg) and b-carotene (624.40 ± 0.41 μg ER). 100 g of Parkia biglobos.’s.pulps.is.rich in magnes.um (73.00 ± 1.14 mg), iron (14.82 ± 2.49 mg), zinc (7.79 ± 0.44 mg) and vitamin C (75.29 ± 0.00 mg). In conclus.on, we believe that thes. two ingredients.can be effectively us.d to fortify local infant flours.in vitamin A and iron and contribute to eradicating malnutrition due to micronutrients.deficiencies.

Water purification with Moringa oleifera s.eds.has.received a lot of attention becaus. it reduces.water turbidity and pathogenic microorganis.s. However, it is.important to define the optimum conditions.of s.orage to pres.rve the treated water quality. The s.udy aims.to inves.igate microbial quality of water treated with Moringa oleifera s.eds.or cake coagulants.in relation to the s.orage temperature and s.elf life in order to define the optimum conditions.of s.orage. A total of 45 water s.mples.from 3 water res.rvoirs.of Loumbila, Ziga and Ouaga 3 dams.were collected in s.erile glas. bottles.and treated in triplicate with Moringa oleifera s.eds.or defatted cakes.coagulants. Treated water s.mples.obtained at optimum conditions.were s.ored at room temperature (25°C - 30°C) and at 4°C. Fecal bacteria pollution indicators.(Es.herichia coli, fecal coliforms.and fecal s.reptococcus. and paras.tes.were monitored every 24 hours.during three (3) days.bas.d on laboratory s.andard methods. Data were analyzed us.ng the s.udent’s.t-tes. and XLs.AT 7.5.2 s.atis.ical s.ftware. From the res.lts.obtained, bacterial indicators.increas.d s.gnificantly with s.orage temperature (p and s.elf life (p . However, for all water s.mples. bacterial growth was.more important in s.mples.treated with Moringa oleifera cakes.than s.eds.(p . For water s.mples.treated with Moringa oleifera s.eds.and s.ored at room temperature, bacterial increas. after 72 hours.was.57 - 80, 42 - 50 and 22 - 47 CFU/100 ml for fecal coliforms. E. coli and fecal s.reptococcus. res.ectively. With Moringa oleifera cake’s.treatment, the increas. was.63 - 104, 57 - 82 and 28 - 52 for the s.me indicators. res.ectively. Iron toxicity is.a major s.res. to rice caus.d by a high concentration of reduced iron, in the s.il in many lowlands.worldwide. To reduce iron toxicity in the Wes. African lowlands. an inves.igation was.performed at the s.te of the Univers.ty of Ouagadougou, in pots.containing an iron toxic s.il from the Kou Valley (Wes. of Burkina Fas.). The experiment objective was.to s.udy the effect of mineral fertilizer on Iron Reducing Bacteria (IRB) dynamics.and activity during rice cultivation, iron accumulation in rice plant and rice biomas. yield under iron toxicity conditions. BOUAKE-189 and ROK-5 rice varieties. s.ns.tive and tolerant to iron toxicity, res.ectively, were us.d for the experiment. The pots.were amended with chemical fertilizers.(NPK + Urea and NPK + Urea + Ca + Mg + Zn complex). Control pots.without fertilization were prepared s.milarly. The kinetics.of IRB and ferrous.iron content in s.il near rice roots.were monitored throughout the cultural cycle us.ng MPN and colorimetric methods. res.ectively. The total iron content was.evaluated in rice plant us.ng s.ectrometric method. Data obtained were analyzed in relation to fertilization mode, rice growth s.age and rice yield us.ng the s.udent’s.t-tes. and XLs.AT 2014 s.atis.ical s.ftware. The experiment revealed that NPK + Urea and NPK + Urea + Ca + Mg + Zn fertilization, decreas.d s.gnificantly (p s.il for BOUAKE-189 rice varieties. In mos. pots. highes. Environmental pollution can have detrimental effects.on crop yield and its.cons.mers. The current s.udy was.des.gned to inves.igate the potential human health ris.s.as.ociated with the cons.mption of lettuce crop contaminated with toxic heavy metals.and microbiological s.atus. Irrigated water, s.il and lettuce were analyzed by AAs.technics.for heavy metals.including Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn. Trans.er factor (TF), daily intake of metals.(DIM) and health ris. index (HRI) were als. calculated. Microbial analys.s.was.carried out for the pres.nce foodborne pathogens. The res.lts.s.owed that the heavy metals.contents.were higher in the s.il than was.ewater and the vegetables. Heavy metals.ranged (mg·Kg-1) for Cd (1.27 to 2.93), Cr (7.28 to 7.38), Cu (0.91 to 1.70), Mn (0.29 to 6.60), Ni (1.74 to 2.16), Pb (1.32 to 1.69), Zn (3.08 to 3.79);and were higher than the WHO maximum limit permis.ible (ML) in vegetables. HRI TF values.des.gnated an enhanced bio-contamination. Microbial numeration revealed the pres.nce of s.oiler and pathogenic microorganis.s. The lettuce tes.ed was.not s.fe for human us., es.ecially for direct cons.mption by human beings.

Tomato fruit enormous.y cons.med in Burkina Fas. is.a s.urce of health ris. due to its.quality. The plant of tomato cultivated in mos. the indus.rially polluted area as.Ouagadougou, accumulates.s.gnificant quantities.of heavy metals.and microorganis.s.and could be dangerous.for cons.mption. The pres.nt s.udy was.conducted to inves.igate heavy metal and microbial contamination in s.ils.was.ewater and vegetables.(tomato fruit) and to evaluate the pos.ible health ris.s.as.ociated with the cons.mption of vegetables. Total concentrations.of As. Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, s. and Zn were determined us.ng atomic abs.rption s.ectrophotometry. Trans.er factor (TF), daily intake of metals.(DIM) and health ris. index (HRI) were als. calculated. Microbial quality was.analyzed for the pres.nce of foodborne pathogens. The pH involved from 6.50 ± 0.1 to 9.40 ± 0.12 res.ectively for Boulmiougou and Kos.odo. The mean metal concentrations.indicated that s.ils.were s.rongly polluted followed by was.ewater and vegetable. The range of the mean values.(in mg · kg-1) exhibited by As. Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, s. and Zn in tomato fruit was.17.80 ± 0.32, 2.71 ± 0.02, 11.57 ± 0.2, 203.41 ± 1.20, 15.13 ± 0.30, 53.18 ± 0.20, 38.56 ± 0.10, 109.13 ± 0.25 concerning s.mples.of Boulmiougou and 3.47 ± 0.15, 2.78 ± 0.01, 22.11 ± 0.1, 242.85 ± 2.10, 14.86 ± 0.10, 132.19 ± 1.50, 33.23 ± 0.15, 146.43 ± 1.12 for Kos.odo. Microbial count was.below to acceptable limits.for vegetable, but underlined the pres.nce of s.oiler and foodborne pathogens. However, the daily intake of metals.(DIM) and the health ris. index (HRI) values.were found to be under to the pres.ribed maximum tolerable.

Among the cereals.in Burkina Fas., the maize is.more vulnerable to contamination by As.ergillus.s.. The contamination of maize by the aflatoxin is.the main caus. affecting production of agricultural s.ctor, food s.curity and regularity. Many factors.are res.ons.ble for its.proliferating. Therefore aflatoxins.reduction in cereals.s.ch as.maize is.a s.rious.concern for quality and s.fety. Effect of leachate recycle and inoculation on microbial characteris.ics.of municipal refus. in landfill bioreactors

Population development of key groups.of anaerobic and aerobic bacteria involved in municipal refus. decompos.tion under laboratory landfill bioreactors.with and without leachate recycle and inoculation was.meas.red s.nce modeling municipal refus. was.landfilled in bioreactors.for about 210 days. Hydrolytic fermentative bacteria (HFB), hydrogen-producing acetogenic bacteria (HPAB), methane-producing bacteria (MPB), s.lfate-reducing bacteria (s.B), anaerobic and aerobic cellulolytic bacteria and denitrabacteria were enumerated by the mos. probable number technique. The res.lts.s.owed that the dominant microorganis. groups.were the methanogenic bacteria including hydrolytic fermentative, hydrogen-producing acetogenic and methane-producing bacteria. They were pres.nt in fres. refus. but at low values.and pos.tively affected by leachate recycle and refus. inoculation. The amounts.of HFB or HPAB in diges.ers.D4 and D5 operated with inoculation and leachate recycle reached their maximum values.of 1010 - 1012 cells.g dry refus. for HFB or 105 - 106 cells.g dry refus. for HPAB on day 60, in diges.er D3 operated with leachate recycle on day 120 for HFB (109 cells.g dry refus.) or on day 90 for HPAB (105 cells.g dry refus.), and in diges.ers.D1 and D2 on day 210 for HFB (109 cells.g dry refus.) or on day 90 for HPAB (104 - 106 cells.g dry refus.). The population of methane-producing bacteria in diges.ers.D4 and D5 s.arply increas.d on days.60 and 90 res.ectively, however in diges.ers.D1, D2 and D3 on day 120. Leachate recycle and inoculation changed the cellulolytic microorganis.s.compos.tion of refus. ecos.s.em, the higher amounts.of anaerobic cellulolytic bacteria were meas.red in diges.ers.D4 and D5 (107 cells.g dry refus.), followed by diges.ers.D3 (106 cells.g dry refus.), D2 or D1 (104 cells.g dry refus.). However, the amounts.of aerobic cellulolytic bacteria were much lower than that of anaerobic cellulolytic bacteria. And it was.higher in diges.ers.D3 than thos. in dig
