Characterizing the diversity and structure of host–parasite communities is crucial to understandingtheir eco-evolutionary *** and related haemosporidian parasites are responsible forfitness loss and mortality in bird species ***,despite exhibiting the greatest ornithologicalbiodiversity,avian haemosporidians from Neotropical regions are quite ***,we analyze the genetic diversity of bird haemosporidian parasites(Plasmodium andHaemoproteus)in 1,336 individuals belonging to 206 bird species to explore for differences in diversityof parasite lineages and bird species across 5 well-differentiated Peruvian *** 70 different haemosporidian lineages infecting 74 bird *** showed that 25 out ofthe 70 haplotypes had not been previously ***,we also identified 81 new host–parasite interactions representing new host records for these haemosporidian *** outcomesrevealed that the effective diversity(as well as the richness,abundance,and Shannon–Weaver index)for both birds and parasite lineages was higher in Amazon basin ***,we also showed that ecoregions with greater diversity of bird species also had highparasite richness,hence suggesting that host community is crucial in explaining parasite *** parasites were found in ecoregions with lower bird diversity,implying that the abundanceand richness of hosts may shape the exploitation strategy followed by haemosporidian *** outcomes reveal that Neotropical region is a major reservoir of unidentified *** studies analyzing host distribution and specificity of these parasites inthe tropics will provide important knowledge about phylogenetic relationships,phylogeography,and patterns of evolution and distribution of haemosporidian parasites.

Characterization of oral yeasts isolated from healthy individuals attended in different Colombian dental clinics

The aim of this study was to identify the most frequent yeasts in the oral cavity of adult individuals without immune disorders and to associate the presence of these oral yeasts with different characteristics of each individual. Oral rinse samples were obtained from 96 healthy adults and cultured in Sabouraud dextrose agar media and CHrOMagar. Yeasts were identified by sequencing the D1/D2 region of the 28 S rrNA gene. Probable association among the socio-demographic characteristics, body mass index, family and personal medical history,oral hygiene, tobacco and/or alcohol consumption habits and presence of oral fungi was analyzed. Contingency tables and logistic regression were employed to evaluate possible relationships between the presence of oral fungi and mixed colonization with these variables. 57.3% of the healthy individuals had oral yeasts and 21.8% had mixed colonization. The most prevalent yeasts were Candida albicans(52%), C. parapsilosis(17.9%), and ***(7.57%). Yeasts with most frequently mixed colonization were C. albicans and C. parapsilosis. No relationships were found among the variables analyzed. However, the presence of mixed colonization was related to the presence of dental prostheses(Pratuses(P=0.016) and O’Leary index(P=0.012). This is the first study that characterized oral yeasts in Colombian healthy individuals, determined the most prevalent oral yeasts C. albicans, C. parapsilosis and C. dublinensis and an association of mixed colonization with the use of dental prostheses and aparatology and poor hygiene.

Background: Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) remains difficult to diagnose because the clinical specimens to be examined are often paucibacillary and obtained with difficulty from inaccessible sites. An updated Xpert® MTB/RIF Ultra (Ultra) test has been designed and licensed to improve sensitivity in the detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the performance of Ultra assay for the clinical diagnosis of EPTB in a low tuberculosis prevalence country. Bevacizumab maintenance in metastatic colorectal cancer: How long?

The management of patients with non-progressive metastatic colorectal cancer after six months of treatment has not yet been codified. The most relevant concerns are the effectiveness of maintenance versus discontinuation, and the tolerability of prolonged treatment. Here we report the case of a 72-year-old man affected by colorectal cancer with lung metastases who achieved a complete response after receiving capecitabine, oxaliplatin and bevacizumab for six months, and bevacizumab alone for six months. Bevacizumab was continued as maintenance regimen for more than three years. It was discontinued because of an arthroplasty. Fifty-eight months after beginning first-line treatment, the patientremains free from relapse. Adverse effects were minimal and easily controlled.

Feeding Behavior, Body Weight and Growth rate during Post-Deprivation Period in rats

Deprivation is an environmental experience that organisms are continually exposed to. However, few studies analyze deprivation effects on the consumption pattern during the post-deprivation period systematically. The aim of this study was to evaluate the deprivation effect on feeding pattern, growth rate and body weight during post-deprivation. Sixteen albino rats (3 months old at the beginning of the experiment) were exposed to 72-hour total food deprivation every 15 days. Food and water were freely available during non-deprivation periods. rats completed three cycles comprised by a free access period followed by food deprivation. Once deprivation was removed, food and water consumption increased and then decreased, while body weight was recovered. Growth rate increased after every deprivation period and reached similar levels to those presented by the control group. Depriving rats from one commodity (i.e., food) cause them to restrain their consumption of the other freely available commodity (i.e., water). results confirm that food deprivation modifies growth rate, water and food consumption. Additionally, during post-deprivation period, differences between males and females were not registered.

The principles that determine the organization of object representation in ventral temporal cortex (VTC) remain elusive. At one extreme, it could be proposed that the observed organization is fully determined by visual processing factors and therefore depends primarily on visual experience. Alternatively, the organization could also be shaped by nonvisual factors such as down-stream computational constraints. On this view, visual experience would not exclusively determine the organization of object representation in VTC. Here, we explore the organization of animate and inanimate object domains in VTC in total absence of visual experience. We tested 14 congenitally blind and matched sighted participants on two auditory experiments involving three object categories: animals, tools, and nonmanipulable objects. Sighted participants additionally participated in picture-viewing experiments. Both blind and sighted participants showed selectivity for large nonmanipulable objects in medial VTC, relative to animals and tools. This region overlapped with the scene-selective parahippocampal place area localized in the sighted group. The picture-viewing data in the sighted revealed additional selectivity for animals in lateral VTC, but this selectivity did not generalize to the auditory experiments in either group, suggesting that the animate-inanimate organization of VTC may be specific to the visual modality. Together these results show that the object domain organization of VTC is highly similar in blind and sighted performing auditory tasks. We conclude that the large-scale organization of high-order visual cortex may be shaped in part by down-stream computational constraints.

Quality of life of patients with brucellosis in an endemic area of Mexico

The aim of this study was to evaluate quality of life of patients infected with brucellosis compared to a control population from the same geographic region. The quality of life of brucellosis positive and brucellosis negative individuals from rural and urban areas of Mexico was evaluated using the Short-Form SF-36 Health Survey. This survey is a generic measure of physical and mental health-related quality of life. Data analysis was performed using one-way analysis of variance and the Tukey test. Brucellosis patients had lower overall quality of life compared with the controls. Brucellosis patients from rural areas had lower overall quality of life (P red with brucellosis patients from urban areas. In conclusion, human brucellosis affects quality of life, with patients living in rural areas most severely impacted. This may be due to the lack of local public policies and programs for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of brucellosis.
