Tungsten（W） is a promising candidate material for the plasma-facing components in future fusion ***,it has issues regarding the intrinsic brittleness as well as operational *** fiber reinforced tungsten（W_f/W） composites overcome these issues by using extrinsic toughening *** to neutron irradiation and high-temperature recrystallization during fusion operation,the ductility of the fibers may degrade over a long period of ***,it is necessary to investigate the fracture behavior of W_f/W composites with brittle *** the present work,the tungsten fibers were embrittled by ***,the continuous brittle W_f/W composite with yttrium oxide（Y2O3） interface was fabricated by the field-assisted sintering technology *** microstructure of the prepared W_f/W composites was *** fracture behavior and toughening mechanisms were discussed in detail based on the experimental results of 3-point bending tests and the corresponding finite element *** composites show a pseudo-ductile fracture *** are hindered and deflected by the de-bonded fiber-matrix *** extrinsic toughening mechanisms of interface de-bonding,crack bridging,and fiber pull-out are *** indicates the reinforcement concept still works even though all components in the W_f/W are brittle.

Correction of laser sweeping nonlinearities using ultralow-loss on-chip 7 m spiral resonators

Swept laser interferometry is an extremely powerful solution embedded in several recent technologies such as absolute distance measurement,light detection and ranging (LiDAR),optical frequency domain reflectometry,optical coherence tomography,microresonator characterization,and gas *** in the optical frequency sweeping of tunable lasers is a fatal drawback in gaining the expected outcome from these ***,we introduce an on-chip,millimeter-scale,7 m spiral resonator that is made of ultralow-loss Si3N4to act as a frequency ruler for correction of the tunable lasers sweeping *** sharp 2 MHz frequency lines of the 8.5×107high-quality factor resonator and the narrow-spaced 25.566 MHz frequency ticks of the 7 m spiral allow unprecedented precision for an on-chip solution to correct the laser sweeping *** measurements of the ruler’s frequency spacing,linewidth,and temperature and wavelength sensitivities of the frequency ticks are performed here to demonstrate the quality of the frequency *** addition,the spiral resonator is implemented in an frequency-modulated continuous-wave LiDAR experiment to demonstrate a potential application of the proposed on-chip frequency ruler.

Frequency-modulated(FM)laser combs,which offer a quasi-continuous-wave output and a flat-topped optical spectrum,are emerging as a promising solution for wavelength-division multiplexing applications,precision metrology,and ultrafast optical *** generation of FM combs relies on spatial hole burning,group velocity dispersion,Kerr nonlinearity,and four-wave mixing(FWM).While FM combs have been widely observed in quantum cascade Fabry-Perot(FP)lasers,the requirement for a low-dispersion FP cavity can be a challenge in platforms where the waveguide dispersion is mainly determined by the *** we report a 60 GHz quantum-dot(QD)mode-locked laser in which both the amplitude-modulated(AM)and the FM comb can be generated *** high FWM efficiency of-5 dB allows the QD laser to generate FM comb *** also demonstrate that the Kerr nonlinearity can be practically engineered to improve the FM comb bandwidth without the need for GVD *** maximum 3-dB bandwidth that our QD platform can deliver is as large as 2.2 *** study gives novel insights into the improvement of FM combs and paves the way for small-footprint,electrically pumped,and energy-efficient frequency combs for silicon photonic integrated circuits(PICs).

Effects of intermittent fasting on health markers in those with type 2 diabetes:A pilot study

AIMTo determine the short-term biochemical effects and clinical tolerability of intermittent fasting (IF) in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).METHODSWe describe a three-phase observational study (baseline 2 wk, intervention 2 wk, follow-up 2 wk) designed to determine the clinical, biochemical, and tolerability of IF in community-dwelling volunteer adults with T2DM. Biochemical, anthropometric, and physical activity measurements (using the Yale Physical Activity Survey) were taken at the end of each phase. Participants reported morning, afternoon and evening self-monitored blood glucose (SMBG) and fasting duration on a daily basis throughout all study stages, in addition to completing a remote food photography diary three times within each study phase. Fasting blood samples were collected on the final days of each study *** baseline, the ten participants had a confirmed diagnosis of T2DM and were all taking metformin, and on average were obese [mean body mass index (BMI) 36.90 kg/m2]. We report here that a short-term period of IF in a small group of individuals with T2DM led to significant group decreases in weight (-1.395 kg, P = 0.009), BMI (-0.517, P = 0.013), and at-target morning glucose (SMBG). Although not a study requirement, all participants preferentially chose eating hours starting in the midafternoon. There was a significant increase (P 2 likelihood ratio = 8.36, P = 0.004) but not for afternoon or evening SMBG (all P > 0.1). Postprandial SMBGs were also improved during the IF phase, with 60.5% readings below 9.05 mmol/L, compared

In this paper we analyze and compare natural regeneration in shrub-tree community in three areas below Pinus caribaea stands and a natural area （cerrado sensu stricto）. We also analyze the influence of biophysical and environmental variables on the distribution of regenerating shrub-tree species. The areas were analyzed and compared in relation to dispersal syndromes as well, being zoochory and anemochory the prevailing syndroms in the four areas. The sites below P. caribaea show a heterogeneous regen- eration with the number of species ranging from 18 to 42. We analyzed the influence of the biophysical and envi- ronmental variables performing a canonical correspon- dence analyses, being found significant values for variables distance from remnant and basal area. The species Si- paruna guianensis, Miconia albicans, Xylopia aromatica, Sclerolobium paniculatum, Casearia sylvestris and P. caribaea were the most importante ones in the four areas,

Sirtuins in B lymphocytes metabolism and function

Sirtuins(SIRTs) are NAD+-dependent histone deacetylases and play a role in virtually all cell biological processes. As SIRTs functions vary according to their subtypes, they can either activate or inhibit signaling pathways upon different conditions or tissues. Recent studies have focused on metabolic effects performed by SIRTs in several cell types since specific metabolic pathways(e.g., aerobic glycolysis, oxidative phosphorylation, β-oxidation, glutaminolysis) are used to determine the cell fate. However, few efforts have been made to understand the role of SIRTs on B lymphocytes metabolism and function. These cells are associated with humoral immune responses by secreting larger amounts of antibodies after differentiating into antibody-secreting cells. Besides, both the SIRTs and B lymphocytes are potential targets to treat several immune-mediated disorders, including cancer. Here, we provide an outlook of recent studies regarding the role of SIRTs in general cellular metabolism and B lymphocytes functions, pointing out the future perspectives of this field.

Aims Riparian forests in the Brazilian Cerrado,also known as gallery forests,are very heterogeneous in structure,species composition and ecological features due to strong and abrupt variations of soil,hydrological and topographic ***,what are the variables driving forest carbon stock and productivity,mortality and recruitment in disturbed gallery forests?Methods We used 36 permanent plots data from a gallery forest in the Brazilian *** investigated how tree community dynam-ics vary in a gallery forest on two contrasting disturbance levels-logged and non-logged-across a topographic gradient intrinsically related to differences in moisture conditions,edge effects,as well as soil fertility and *** Findings Soil variables were reduced into principal components and we used structural equation modelling to disentangle covarying *** also included carbon stocks as a determinant variable of dynamics *** forest had 50%higher productivity than non-logged forest and streamside forest had aboveground carbon stocks 70%higher than the forest *** logging and natural disturbance drove variation in the carbon stocks which contributed to shaping productivity and recruitment *** from the river also drove mortality and carbon stock *** with high-carbon stocks favoured higher competition and lessened produc-tivity and recruitment *** soil fertility and texture are considered crucial components shaping forest dynamics,there was no clear influence of those variables on the present forest,probably because the strong effects of soil moisture,forest edge and distur-bance disrupted the correlation between soil and forest dynamics.

Intestinal neuronal dysplasia type B(IND-B)is a controversial condition among gastrointestinal neuromuscular *** is its most common clinical manifestation in *** intense scientific research,there are still knowledge gaps regarding the diagnostic criteria for IND-B in the histopathological analysis of rectal *** guidelines published in the past three decades have directed diagnostic criteria for quantifying the number of ganglion cells in the nervous plexus of the enteric nervous ***,it is very complex to distinguish numerically what is pathological from what is normal,mainly because of the difficulty in determining a reliable control group composed of healthy children without intestinal ***,a series of immunohistochemical markers have been proposed to assist in the histopathological analysis of the enteric nervous *** of these markers facilitate the identification of other structures of the enteric nervous system,in addition to ganglion *** structures may be related to the etiopathogenesis of IND-B and represent new possibilities for the histopathological diagnosis of this disease,providing a view beyond the number of ganglion *** review critically discusses the aspects related to the disease definitions and diagnostic criteria of this organic cause of constipation.
