Background: Malondialdehyde(MDA) is a candidate general marker of oxidative stress(OS). We sought to assess the relation of MDA to Gulf War illness(GWI) and to a variety of ***: This is an observational study involving subjects from Southern California recruited from October 2011 to May 2014. MDA was assessed in 81 participants(41 GWI-cases, 40 controls). General and Gulf-specific exposures were elicited. MDA case–control comparison was restricted to 40 matched pairs. The potential association between MDA and exposures was assessed using regression analyses. Gulf-specific exposures were incorporated into a case-specific ***: Plasma MDA was significantly lower in GWI-cases than controls. Composite pesticide and fuel-solvent exposures negatively predicted MDA in the total sample, as well as in the analyses that included either GWI-cases or controls only. Self-reported exposure to organophosphate(OP) nerve gas was a strong predictor for lower MDA level in veterans with ***: Past pesticide exposures predicted lower MDA in both veterans with GWI and in healthy controls.

Structural and mechanical properties of La_(1/3)NbO_3 and La_(1/3)TaO_3 thin films prepared by chemical solution deposition

In this work, properties of perovskite lanthanum niobate La1/3NbO3(LN) and tantalate La1/3TaO3(LT)transparent thin films(200 nm thickness) prepared by chemical solution deposition on Pt/SiO2/Si substrates were described. The precursors and films were analyzed using FTIR and XPS spectra, XRD and SEM imaging. The both films after annealing at 1100 ℃ contained perovskite phase with a small fraction of pyrochlore LaNb5O14(in LN). The heterogeneous micro structure of LN film was composed from spherical or needle-like particles and homogeneous LT film that resulted in significant changes of their mechanical properties. The elastic modulus and hardness of these films were characterized for the first time by conventional and continuous stiffness(CSM) nanoindentation. The LT film modulus(E) and hardness(H) were higher(105.7 and 5.3 GPa) than LN(91.5 and 3.8 GPa). The effect of microstructure on mechanical properties is significant. In addition, the average Derjaguin-Muller-Toporov(DMT)-based elastic modulus of LN film surface were estimated50 GPa using AFM PeakForce QNM elastic mapping. The findings presented here can contribute to the fabrication of LN and LT films for the application to electrolytic thin film devices.

Introduction: Hidden hearing loss (HHL) is a type of auditory disorder that affects the auditory neural processing and hearing sensitivity in subjects with normal hearing thresholds. Unlike central auditory processing disorders, HHL happens when the cochlea (the peripheral auditory organ) is affected. There are several known risk factors to HHL which includes noise exposure, ototoxic drugs, and peripheral neuropathies, and age. Recent studies have shed light on this type of hearing loss, its etiology, prevalence, and how it can affect the auditory acuity in humans. Methods: This paper covers the current research regarding HHL, its causes, the different mechanisms involved in this disorder, and the diagnosis and potential treatments related to it. We will delve deeply into different researches concerning HHL. 4 articles from 285 were selected focusing on normal hearing individuals with bad speech intelligibility were discussed in this paper. In addition, articles discussing the effects of noise exposure on hearing impaired individuals were not considered as this study solely aims to focus on normal hearing sensitivity individuals with HHL, resulting in 4 articles from 285. Results: Numerous literatures over the decades have suggested that HHL is due to the degeneration of cochlear ribbon synapses, or hair cells synapses without hair cell damage. Their association with HHL was noted several times through this study, whether we were studying the effect of noise exposure, of age, or of ototoxicity. In all cases, no significant hair cell damage was observed, and normal thresholds were recovered. However, a decline in the amplitude of Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) peak I from auditory nerve (AN) responses in noise exposed subjects and a decline in compound action potential (CAP) was measured when certain drugs were applied to the round window of Guinea pigs. As is well known, Greece has a significant number of earthquakes each year. Ιn recent years, several earthquakes have occurred in Greece. For this scope, a methodology was used to determine the source parameters. This methodology is based on minimizing the difference between the observed and the synthetic waveforms, using the method Source Parameters Calculation—SPCa [1]. The source parameters, using the proposed methodology, are calculated by comparing observed seismograms and synthetic by inverting data. The synthetics are calculated using the reflectivity method (Kennett, 1983) as implemented by Randall et al. (1994) for a given earth structure. This study includes inversion results for the strongest events that occurred in Greece from 2008 to 2014. For the same events calculated the main fault plane, using the method of Hypocenter Centroid-plot (HC-plot) [2] [3]. This methodology is a simple geometrical method based on the combination between the hypocentral position and the two possible fault planes.

Radionuclides and mercury in the salt lakes of the Crimea

^99Sr concentrations, resulting from the Chernobyl NPP accident, were determined in the salt lakes of the Crimea （Lakes Kiyatskoe, Kirleutskoe, Kizil-Yar, Bakalskoe and Donuzlav）, together with the redistribution between the components of the ecosystems. The content of mercury in the waters of the studied reservoirs was also established. Vertical distributions of natural radionuclide activities （^238U, ^232Th, ^226Ra, ^210pb, ^40K） and anthropogenic ^137Cs concentrations （as radiotracers） were determined in the bottom sediments of the Koyashskoe salt lake （located in the south-eastern Crimea） to evaluate the long- term dynamics and biogeochemical processes. Radiochemical and chemical analysis was undertaken and radiotracer and statistical methods were applied to the analytical data. The highest concentrations of ^99Sr in the water of Lake Kiyatskoe （350.5 and 98.0 Bq/m^3） and Lake Kirleutskoe （121.3 Bq/m^3） were due to the discharge of the Dnieper water from the North-Crimean Canal. The high content of mercury in Lake Kiyatskoe （363.2 ng/L） and in seawater near Lake Kizil-Yar （364 ng/L） exceeded the maximum permissible concentration （3.5 times the maximum）. Natural radionuclides provide the main contribution to the total radioactivity （artificial and natural combined） in the bottom sediments of Lake Koyashskoe. The significant concentration of ^210pb in the upper layer of bottom sediments of the lake indicates an active inflow of its parent radionuclide-gaseous ^222Rn from the lower layers of the bottom sediment. The average sedimentation rates in Lake Koyashskoe, determined using ^210pb and ^137Cs data, were 0.117 and 0.109 cm per year, respectively.

Recently, it has been shown that plants contain homologs to the animal Polycomb repressive complex I （PRC1） components BM11 and RINGIA/B. In Arabidopsis, there are three BMIl-like genes, two of which, AtBMIIA and B, are required during post-embryonic plant growth to repress embryonic traits and allow cell differentiation. However, little is known about the third BMIl-like gene, AtBMIIC. In this work, we show that AtBMIIC is only expressed during endosperm and stamen development. AtBMIIC is an imprinted gene expressed from the maternal allele in the endosperm but bialleli- cally expressed in stamen. We found that the characteristic expression pattern of AtBMIIC is the result of a complex epigenetic regulation that involves CG DNA methylation, RNA-directed non-CG DNA methylation （RdDM）, and PcG activity. Our results show the orchestrated interplay of different epigenetic mechanisms in regulating gene expression throughout development, shedding light on the current hypotheses for the origin and mechanism of imprinting in plant endosperm.
