Evidence for polarization-induced phase transformations and degradation in CH_(3)NH_(3)PbI_(3)

In solar cells,hybrid halide perovskites operate under constant bias,thus their stability towards electric field-induced degradation is of key *** we report on evidence of previously unidentified electric field-induced transitions and degradation path of CH_(3)NH_(3)PbI_(3)(MAPbI_(3))using elemental and phase *** films of MAPbI_(3) were deposited onto 1-2μm-pitch interdigitated electrodes and subjected to direct current(DC)-*** MAPbI_(3) layer polarized with<0.8 V/μm DC electric field undergoes pronounced ion redistribution to methylammonium-rich MAPbI_(3)-y(y<0.6)and iodine-rich MA1-xPbI3(x<0.3)***-induced loss of both methylammonium and iodine provokes degradation of MAPbI_(3).Using nanofocus grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering(GIWAXS),we unambiguously showed that the bias voltage induces the transformation ofβ-MAPbI_(3) to metastableδ-MAPbI_(3) polymorph via alignment of polar organic cation with the electric *** transformation is partially reversible upon field ***,once formed,δ-MAPbI_(3) disrupts the morphology of pristine film and undergoes decomposition toβ-MAPbI_(3)(β-MAPI)and PbI_(2).With the aforementioned compositional and phase changes,only MA-rich part serves as the charge separation layer,while the I-rich excitation is blocked with the PbI_(2) barrier serving as holes trapping *** observations reveal the intermediate steps in electric-field-driven degradation of halide perovskites and show the role of polar cations in the process,which is instructive for further material design with higher stability metrics.

Lineage plasticity-mediated therapy resistance in prostate cancer

Therapy resistance is a significant challenge for prostate cancer treatment in clinic. Although targeted therapies such as androgen deprivation and androgen receptor (AR) inhibition are effective initially, tumor cells eventually evade these strategies through multiple mechanisms. Lineage reprogramming in response to hormone therapy represents a key mechanism that is increasingly observed. The studies in this area have revealed specific combinations of alterations present in adenocarcinomas that provide cells with the ability to transdifferentiate and perpetuate AR-independent tumor growth after androgen-based therapies. Interestingly, several master regulators have been identified that drive plasticity, some of which also play key roles during development and differentiation of the cell lineages in the normal prostate. Thus, further study of each AR-independent tumor type and understanding underlying mechanisms are warranted to develop combinational therapies that combat lineage plasticity in prostate cancer.

Current progress in the treatment of chronic hepatitis C

Over the last decade,the standard of care for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C has been the combination of pegylated-interferon-alfa(PEG-IFN) and ribavirin(RBV) which results in sustained virological response(SVR) rates of 75%-85% in patients with genotypes 2 or 3 but only of 40%-50% in patients with genotype ***,there are rapid and continuous developments of numerous new agents against hepatitis C virus(HCV),which are the focus of this *** and telaprevir,two first-generation NS3/4A HCV protease inhibitors,have been recently licensed in several countries around the world to be used in combination with PEGIFN and RBV for the treatment of genotype 1 *** or telaprevir based triple regimens,compared with the PEG-IFN/RBV combination,improve the SVR rates by 25%-31% in treatment-na ve genotype 1 patients,by 40%-64% in prior relapsers,by 33%-45% in prior partial responders and by 24%-28% in prior null *** the same time,the application of response-guided treatment algorithms according to the on-treatment virological response results in shortening of the total therapy duration to only 24 wk in 45%-55% of treatment-na ve *** are,however,several challenges with the use of the new triple combinations in genotype 1 patients,such as the need for immediate results of HCV RNA testing using sensitive quantitative assays,new and more frequent adverse events(anemia and dysgeusia for boceprevir;pruritus,rash and anemia for telaprevir),new drug interactions and increasing difficulties in ***,the SVR rates are still poor in very difficult to treat subgroups of genotype 1 patients,such as null responders with cirrhosis,while there is no benefit for patients who cannot tolerate PEGIFN/RBV or who are infected with non-1 HCV *** newer anti-HCV agents of different classes and numerous combinations are currently under evaluation with encouraging *** data suggest that the treatment of chroni

Members of the Structural Maintenance of Chromosome (SMC) family have long been of interest to molecular and evolutionary biologists for their role in chromosome structural dynamics, particularly sister chro-matid cohesion, condensation, and DNA repair. SMC and related proteins are found in all major groups of living organisms and share a common structure of conserved N and C globular domains separated from the conserved hinge domain by long coiled-coil regions. In eukaryotes there are six paralogous proteins that form three het-erodimeric pairs, whereas in prokaryotes there is only one SMC protein that homodimerizes. From recently com-pleted genome sequences, we have identified SMC genes from 34 eukaryotes that have not been described in previous reports. Our phylogenetic analysis of these and previously identified SMC genes supports an origin for the vertebrate meiotic SMC1 in the most recent common ancestor since the divergence from invertebrate animals. Additionally, we have identified duplicate copies due to segmental duplications for some of the SMC paralogs in plants and yeast, mainly SMC2 and SMC6, and detected evidence that duplicates of other paralogs were lost, suggesting differential evolution for these genes. Our analysis indicates that the SMC paralogs have been stably maintained at very low copy numbers, even after segmental (genome-wide) duplications. It is possible that such low copy numbers might be selected during eukaryotic evolution, although other possibilities are not ruled out.

Optimisation of zeolite LTA synthesis from alum sludge and the influence of the sludge source

Generation of alum sludge(AS)at drinking water treatment plants represents an environmental liability and adds to the cost of water ***,this study explored the feasibility of using low and high carbon containing alum sludge from two water treatment plants to synthesize zeolite *** hypothesis was that zeolite LTA synthesis was dependant upon alum sludge source and that a range of strategies may be required to optimize zeolite *** characteristics such as morphology,phase composition,crystallinity,and particle size distribution were recorded."One pot"hydrothermal synthesis of precursor gel with molar composition 4.2 Na2O:Al2O3:1.2 SiO_(2):168 H2O at 80℃ for 3 hr resulted in 25 and 46 wt.%zeolite LTA from high and low carbonaceous sludge,*** to hydrothermal reaction stage it was discovered that ageing of the gel,addition of zeolite LTA seeds,ultrasonic treatment and calcination all promoted zeolite LTA *** of the alum sludge at 700℃ for 2 hr before hydrothermal synthesis resulted in particle size reduction and the highest amount of crystalline zeolite LTA:79 wt.%from low carbon sludge and 65 wt.%from high carbon ***,the zeolite crystallinity reported in this study was the higher than previous studies on this *** outlined approach may allow value adding of alum waste and produce a commodity which could be used locally by the water treatment plant as a water softener.
