Loneliness is considered a public health problem that negatively affects wellbeing,especially in the older *** Latin-American countries,most of the older population live with their *** this is thought to diminish feelings of loneliness,there is scarce data to support *** objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of loneliness and evaluate its association with objective social networks,family functioning and perception of social support,in a sample of older people from Santiago,Chile.A survey was conducted of a representative sample of community older people(60–97 years)from Santiago,Chile,using the UCLA abbreviated scale of *** regression was performed to test the variables related to the loneliness of older people.A total of 1,217 older people were interviewed.88%were living with at least one person at home and 92%had living *** the UCLA abbreviated scale,45%were found to perceive feelings of loneliness at least some of the *** regression showed significant association between loneliness and family dysfunction;depressive symptoms;living alone;not having a partner(widowed,separated or single);having little contact with relatives and friends;feeling a lack of social support;and sensation of poor *** is a prevalent public health problem in this older Latin-American *** accompanied does not protect against loneliness,particularly in vulnerable groups such as those with depression,or when there are family conﬂ*** high prevalence of loneliness strongly conveys the need for public health policies to address loneliness in older people.

ZnO nanoparticles(ZnO-NP)present innovative optical,electrical,and magnetic properties that depend on spe-cific characteristics,e.g.,size,distribution,and ***,these properties are essential to address various applications in areas such as electronics,medicine,energy,and *** addition,the performance of this ZnO-NP depends of their preparation which can be done by chemical,physical,and biological ***,nowadays,the main interest in developing ZnO-NP synthesis through biological methods bases on the decrease of use of toxic chemicals or energy applied to the procedures,making the process more cost-effective and environ-mentally ***,the large-scale production of nanoparticles by green synthesis remains a big challenge due to the complexity of the biological extracts used in chemical *** being the case,the preparation of ZnO-NP using Moringa oleifera extract as an alternative biological agent for capping and reduction in synthesis was evaluated in this ***,the results based on the analysis of the optical and structural characterization of the ZnO-NP obtained by employing UV-Vis,DLS,zeta potential,XRD,ATR-FTIR,and FE-SEM indicate mostly the presence of spherical nanosized material with a mean hydrodynamic diameter of 47.2 nm measured by DLS and a mean size diameter of 25 nm observed with FE-SEM ***,in FE-SEM images a homo-geneous dispersion and distribution is observed in the absence of agglutination,agglomeration,or generation of significant lumps of the *** XRD analysis showed that heat annealing induced the crystallite size favor-ing their *** obtained data confirm the synthesis of ZnO-NP and the absence of impurities associated with organic compounds in the annealed ***,those results and low-cost production pre-sent to the synthesized ZnO-NP by this biological method as a useful material in several applications.

Background Stroke is a major cause of death or long-term disability *** patients with stroke receive integrative therapy consisting of Western medicine(WM)and routine rehabilitation in conjunction with Chinese medicine(CM),such as acupuncture and Chinese herbal ***,there is no available evidence on the effectiveness of the combined use of WM and CM interventions in stroke *** The purpose of this meta-analysis is to evaluate the results of all individual studies to assess the combined use of CM and WM in stroke rehabilitation compared with WM *** The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines were ***,EMBASE,Cochrane and China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI)were *** included outcomes were dependency,motor function,depression and swallowing *** analysis was performed,and publication bias was assessed using funnel *** of review 58 studies and 6339 patients were included in the *** analysis revealed that combined therapy comprising both acupuncture and WM had a superior effect on improving dependency and swallowing function compared with standard WM therapy *** superiority of combined therapy comprising CM and WM in improving depression compared with standard WM therapy was also *** Our results indicate that the combined use of CM and WM could be more efficacious in stroke rehabilitation compared with the use of WM therapy ***,most studies were short in duration(2 to 4 weeks)and prone to different types of biases,which prevents making any conclusion regarding the long-term effects and raises concerns regarding true efficacy in context of high likelihood of Hawthorn ***,more randomised controlled trials with more rigorous design and longer duration of treatment and follow-up need to be conducted to compare WM alone versus WM and CM combined.

Prediction of survival after left-sided pancreatic resection for adenocarcinoma: Introduction of a new prognostic score

Spectral feature characterization and nitrogen content prediction in soils with different particle sizes and moisture contents

The objective of this research is to analyze the influences of light source incidence angle,fiber height,moisture content,and particle size on loamy mixed soil ***(N)content calibration and cross-validation models at different moisture contents and particle sizes were obtained using partial least squares(PLS)*** data were collected using a *** height of 100 mm and light source angle at 45°were chosen to obtain the sharpest spectra without apparent scattering *** results show that moisture content and particle size strongly influenced the absorbance of the spectra,and a better N prediction model was obtained when the particle sizes were in the ranges of 0.5-1.0,1.0-2.0 and 2.0-5.0 mm,with the correlation coefficients(r)of 0.819,0.815 and 0.818,and standard errors of prediction(SEP)of 2.29,2.41 and 2.42 mg/kg,*** N prediction model was obtained when the soil was kept in its natural moisture content with r of 0.575 and SEP of 3.275 mg/kg,compared to the performance of dried soil samples with r of 0.815 and SEP of 2.425 mg/kg.

Generation of wavelength-independent subwavelength Bessel beams using metasurfaces

Bessel beams are of great interest due to their unique non-diffractive *** a conical prism or an objective paired with an annular aperture are two typical approaches for generating zeroth-order Bessel ***,the former approach has a limited numerical aperture(NA),and the latter suffers from low efficiency,as most of the incident light is blocked by the ***,an additional phase-modulating element is needed to generate higher-order Bessel beams,which in turn adds complexity and bulkiness to the *** overcome these problems using dielectric metasurfaces to realize meta-axicons with additional functionalities not achievable with conventional *** demonstrate meta-axicons with high NA up to 0.9 capable of generating Bessel beams with full width at half maximum about as small as~λ/3(λ=405 nm).Importantly,these Bessel beams have transverse intensity profiles independent of wavelength across the visible *** meta-axicons can enable advanced research and applications related to Bessel beams,such as laser fabrication,imaging and optical manipulation.

Association of the level of heteroplasmy of the 15059G>A mutation in the MT-CyB mitochondrial gene with essential hypertension

AIM: To examine whether the heteroplasmy level for 15059G>A mutation in the mitochondrial genome might be associated with essential hypertension. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 196 unrelated participants randomly selected from general population (90 males and 106 females) who underwent a regular medical check-up at the Institute for Ath-erosclerosis Research (Moscow, Russia). One hundred and twenty of them (61%) had essential hypertension, and 76 (39%) were apparently healthy normotensive persons. The level of heteroplasmy for 15059G>A mutation occurring in the coding region of cytochrome b gene (MT-CyB) of mtDNA isolated from the blood leukocytes, was quantified using DNA pyrosequencing method. RESULTS: The 15059G>A heteroplasmy level ranged between 4% and 83%, with a median level of 31%. Between the upper and lower quartiles of 15059G>A heteroplasmy distribution, significant differences were observed for patients’ age, systolic blood pressure, and triglyceride levels. 15059G>A heteroplasmy correlated both with age (r = 0.331, P ypertension (r = 0.228, P = 0.002). Regression analysis revealed that the age explains 12% variability of 15059G>A heteroplasmy, and hypertension independently explains more 5% variability. The 15059G>A heteroplasmy exceeding 31% was found to be significantly associated with a higher risk of essential hypertension (odds ratio 2.76; P (Fisher) 0.019]. The study participants with high 15059G>A heteroplasmy level were found to have significantly higher age (P ypertension (P = 0.033), as compared to those with low 15059G>A heteroplasmy level. These observations suggested a positive correlation between the level of 15059G>A heteroplasmy and essential hypertension. CONCLUSION: This study provides the evidence of association of mtDNA 15059G>A mutation heteroplasmy with essential hypertension.
