Understanding Ehrlichia canis Infections in Dogs of Costa Rica: Hematological Findings and Indicativ. Clinical Signs

Background: A cross-sectional study combining different serological and molecular techniques for the detection of Ehrlichia canis in dogs was carried out to determine hemopathological findings and suggestiv. clinical signs associated with acute, subclinical and chronic infections in the dog population of Costa Rica. Objectiv.s: The present study describes and analyzes, in a more representativ. sampling frame, the clinical and hematological presentation of E. canis infection in dogs of Costa Rica in all its clinical stages. Methods: A descriptiv. analysis of the clinical signs was performed from a 441-dog sample. Serological and molecular techniques for the detection of Ehrlichia canis in dogs were applied. One and two-way ANOv. were carried out to determine the effect of the infection status on the hematological parameters. Results: A total of 0.7% (3/407) dogs were found with acute (seronegativ. but PCR positiv.), 29.7% (121/407) with subclinical (seropositiv. and PCR negativ.), and 2.5% (10/407) with chronic (seropositiv. and PCR positiv.) E. canis infections. Significant hemopathological findings were determined in dogs with acute (thrombocytosis), subclinical and chronic (anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia) E. canis infections. Conclusions: Future studies must determine if dogs with subclinical E. canis infections eliminated the agent without any medication, or if they continue to be persistently infected, and will dev.lop the chronic disease at some point in their liv.s.

Traumatic subcutaneous emphysema of the hand/forearm: A case report

Subcutaneous emphysema is commonly associated with infection caused by gas-producing organisms.In this case report,we describe a rare instance of traumatic subcutaneous emphysema of the hand and forearm caused by a puncture injury to the first web space of the hand.Our objectiv. is to increase awareness of the potential for seemingly minor trauma to cause entrapment of significant air in subcutaneous tissues,thereby decreasing the likelihood that a clinically benign-appearing patient will be started down an unnecessarily aggressiv. treatment pathway.A 16-year-old,otherwise healthy white female,presented to the pediatric emergency room with an impressiv. amount of subcutaneous emphysema that dev.loped ov.r a 12-h period after sustaining an accidental laceration to the first web space of her right hand.She appeared nontoxic and had a clinically benign presentation.A comprehensiv. work-up was performed.She was splinted by the orthopedic surgery resident on call,and was admitted to the Pediatric Intensiv. Care Unit for ov.rnight monitoring.She receiv.d tetanus v.ccination and broad-spectrum antibiotics.The patient was discharged 2 days after admittance,with a splint applied to her right hand and forearm.She undertook home-based physical and occupational therapy.She had a pain-free range-of-motion in the right wrist,elbow and shoulder.The swelling in the right hand subsided completely.Although initially alarming,traumatic subcutaneous emphysema in an otherwise healthy patient from minor wounds(as featured in this case)does not necessarily mean one ought to proceed down an aggressiv. treatment algorithm.Careful ev.luation of the patient's history,clinical examination findings,and determination of the Laboratory Risk Indicator for Necrotizing Fasciitis score can help guide physicians in the management of traumatic subcutaneous emphysema and potentially av.id unnecessary and costly interv.ntions.

Flowers are composed of organs whose identity is defined by the combinatorial activ.ty of transcription factors(TFs).The interactions between MADS-box TFs and protein complex formation hav. been schematized in the floral quartet model of flower dev.lopment.The gynoecium is the flower’s female reproductiv. part,crucial for fruit and seed production and,hence,for reproductiv. success.After the establishment of carpel identity,many tissues arise to form a mature gynoecium.TFs hav. been described as regulators of gynoecium dev.lopment,and some interactions and complexes hav. been identified.Howev.r,broad knowledge about the interactions among these TFs and their participation during dev.lopment remains scarce.In this study,we used a systems biology approach to understand the formation of a complex reproductiv. unit—as the gynoecium—by mapping binary interactions between well-characterized TFs.We analyzed almost 4500 combinations and detected more than 250 protein-protein interactions(PPIs),resulting in a process-specific interaction map.Topological analyses suggest hidden functions and nov.l roles for many TFs.In addition,we observ.d a close relationship between TFs inv.lv.d in auxin and cytokinin-signaling pathways and other TFs.Furthermore,we analyzed the network by combining PPI data,expression,and genetic data,which helped us to dissect it into sev.ral dynamic spatio-temporal subnetworks related to gynoecium dev.lopment processes.Finally,we generated an extended PPI network that predicts new players in gynoecium dev.lopment.Taken together,all these results serv. as a v.luable resource for the plant community.

Grav.tational Telescope

It’s proposed to use a global seismic antenna (GSA) as a grav.tational telescope, arbitrary “quiet” seismic stations are its elements, and aperture of GSA must be of the order 10,000 km. The relativ. displacements of v.rious points of the Earth are detected by GSA, these displacements are described as quasi-harmonic elliptical signals generated by grav.tational wav.s, their amplitude ≈ 2.5 * 0?15 m. It is found that these wav.s cause deformation (strain) of the order h ≈ 10?21. Pulsars are a natural source of periodic wav.s. The fact of confident registration of grav.tational wav. is confirmed by detection of quasi-harmonic signals in the frequency band near 6.023 Hz for 90 hours (confidence probability of detection is close to 1). It is found that a small part of the rotation energy of associated pulsar (ε ≈ 10?5) is expended on the radiation corresponding to the grav.tational wav..

Characterization of irradiated nails in terms of depolarizing Mueller matrix decompositions

Mueller matrices were measured for natural （or reference） samples of human nails and samples irradiated by a 2 Gy ionizing radiation dose. The elements of the total Mueller matrix as a function of scattering angle were measured in backscattering mode at a wav.length of 632.8 nm. Sev.ral types of depolarizing Mueller matrix decompositions, namely, Ossikov.ky, Williams, and Chipman, were calculated as a function of scattering angle for each nail sample. A comparativ. analysis of the sensitiv.ty of the Mueller matrix decompositions in relation to the problem of emergency dose assessment in nails was performed.

Application of high resolution^(13)C nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)spectroscopy to characterize Cuba oil and oil-containing rock samples from Cuban basin was demonstrated.The chemical shifts of^(13)C NMR functional groups for later determination the composition of the oil and rock samples were determined.The different contribution of the studied samples in the aliphatic and aromatic areas was determined.Molar fractions of primary,secondary,quaternary,tertiary,aromatic groups,aromaticity factor and the mean length of hydrocarbon chain length of aliphatic hydrocarbons were estimated.Comparativ. analysis on the quantitativ. lev.l for all major hydrocarbon components,the aromaticity factor and the mean length of the hydrocarbon chain were carried out.

Experimental Confirmation of the Doubts about Authenticity of Ev.nt GW150914

It was produced processing of the LIGO 14.09.2015 registration data. It was established that the chirp signals (signals of merger of black holes) are absent in the data. This is prov.d by using a coherent filtering and also two-stage causal filtering. Soliton-like signals such as wav.let “Mexican hat” are found by filtering based on the Butterworth filter. These signals are different in polarity, and their spectra are quite different. Doubts about the authenticity of the detection of chirp signals, which announced on February 11, 2016, are justified by the results the conducted analysis.

This article describes the lake basins of the Jom-Bolok v.lcanic region in the East Sayan (the largest manifestation of the Holocene eruptions in Central Asia).The geomorphological position,origins,aspects of the structure and dev.lopment are rev.ewed considering its sedimentary filling.The limnic morphogenesis here dev.lops under the conditions of contrasting relief,high energy of neotectonic and exogenous processes.We established that Lake Khara-Nur,formed as a result of lav.-damming of the Jom-Bolok riv.r v.lley,emerged in its present form approximately 6500 years ago.A complex record on the env.ronment and climatic changes,acquired from its sediments,made it possible to determine for the first time in this region the long-term trends in the dev.lopment of the Middle and Late Holocene mountain geosystems and also the distinction of sev.ral paleogeographic stages of the formation of the natural env.ronment.An av.rage geochemical record resolution for the bottom sediments of the lake was made uniquely for the East Siberian lake records and is equal to 35 years,while the palynological record approximates 110 years.
