Volcano video data characterized and classified using computer vision and machine learning algorithms

Video cameras are common at volcano observatories,but their utility is often limited during periods of crisis due to the large data volume from continuous acquisition and time requirements for manual *** cameras to serve as effective monitoring tools,video frames must be synthesized into relevant time series signals and further analyzed to classify and characterize observable *** this study,we use computer vision and machine learning algorithms to identify periods of volcanic activity and quantify plume rise velocities from video *** were collected at Villarrica Volcano,chile from two visible band cameras located^17 km from the vent that recorded at 0.1 and 30 frames per second between February and April *** these two months,Villarrica exhibited a diverse range of eruptive activity,including a paroxysmal eruption on 3 *** to and after the eruption,activity included nighttime incandescence,dark and light emissions,inactivity,and periods of cloud *** quantify the color and spatial extent of plume emissions using a blob detection algorithm,whose outputs are fed into a trained artificial neural network that categorizes the observable activity into five *** shifts from primarily nighttime incandescence to ash emissions following the 3 March paroxysm,which likely relates to the reemergence of the buried lava *** periods exhibiting plume emissions are further analyzed using a row and column projection algorithm that identifies plume onsets and calculates apparent plume horizontal and vertical rise *** onsets are episodic,occurring with an average period of^50 s and suggests a puffing style of degassing,which is commonly observed at ***,the lack of clear acoustic transients in the accompanying infrasound record suggests puffing may be controlled by atmospheric effects rather than a degassing regime at the *** presented here offer a generalized toolset for volcano monito

Status and prospects for symmetric organic redox flow batteries

As environmental concerns from fossil fuel consumption intensify, large-scale energy storage becomes imperative for the integration of renewable sources like wind, hydro, and solar with the electrical *** flow batteries, particularly those employing organic molecules, are positioned as a key technology for this purpose. This review explores the growing field of symmetric organic redox flow batteries(ORFBs) within this context. Unlike traditional asymmetric designs based on unique active materials for each electrode, symmetric ORFBs involve a single bipolar species for both electrodes. This review highlights the benefits of a symmetric design, and categorizes five distinct classes of organic bipolar molecules used in both aqueous and non-aqueous solvents. By providing a comprehensive overview of their cell cycling and performance characteristics, the strengths and weaknesses of the diverse categories of bipolar molecules are highlighted for both solvent systems, as are opportunities for future development. This should guide new research directions and advance the development of practical symmetric ORFBs.

Axonal regeneration following surgical nerve repair is slow and often incomplete,resulting in poor functional recovery which sometimes contributes to lifelong ***,there are no FDA-approved therapies available to promote nerve *** accelerates axonal regeneration,but systemic side effects presently outweigh its potential benefits for peripheral nerve *** authors describe herein a biodegradable polyurethane-based drug delivery system for the sustained local release of tacrolimus at the nerve repair site,with suitable properties for scalable production and clinical application,aiming to promote nerve regeneration and functional recovery with minimal systemic drug *** is encapsulated into co-axially electrospun polycarbonate-urethane nanofibers to generate an implantable nerve wrap that releases therapeutic doses of bioactive tacrolimus over 31 *** and drug loading are adjustable for applications in small and large caliber nerves,and the wrap degrades within 120 days into biocompatible *** released from the nerve wrap promotes axon elongation in vitro and accelerates nerve regeneration and functional recovery in preclinical nerve repair models while off-target systemic drug exposure is reduced by 80%compared with systemic *** its surgical suitability and preclinical efficacy and safety,this system may provide a readily translatable approach to support axonal regeneration and recovery in patients undergoing nerve surgery.

In this paper, the crystallization behaviour of amorphous cu56Zr7Ti37 alloy using thermal electrical resistivity （TER） and differential scanning calorimetry （DSc） studies has been described. Isochronal TER and DSc measurements indicate that crystallization occurs in two stages. Isothermal crystallization studies of the alloy by TER show that the kinetics conforms to johnson-Mehl-Avrami model. Avrami exponents derived from kinetics, between 1.1 and 1.2, imply that the crystallization processes are diffusion controlled with near zero nucleation. Activation energy has been found to increase with the transformed volume fraction. A plausible explanation has been presented by separating the contributions due to nucleation and crystal growth towards total activation energy.

Improvement strategies for Ni-based alcohol steam reforming catalysts

Steam reforming(SR)of fossil methane is already a well-known,documented and established expertise in the industrial sector as it accounts for the vast majority of global hydrogen *** a sustainable development perspective,hydrogen production by SR of biomass-derived feedstock represents a promising alternative that could help to lower the carbon footprint of the traditional *** this regard,bio-alcohols such as methanol,ethanol or glycerol are among the attractive candidates that could serve as green hydrogen carriers as they decompose at relatively low temperatures in the presence of water compared to methane,allowing for improved H_(2)***,significant challenges remain regarding the activity and stability of nickel-based catalysts,which are most widely used in alcohol SR processes due to their affordability and ability to break c–c,O–H and c–H bonds,yet are prone to rapid deactivation primarily caused by coke deposition and metal particle *** this state-of-the-art review,a portfolio of strategies to improve the performance of Ni-based catalysts used in alcohol SR processes is unfolded with the intent of pinpointing the critical issues in catalyst *** examination of the literature reveals that the efforts tackling these recurring issues can be directed at the active metal,either by tuning Ni dispersion and Ni-support interactions or by targeting synergistic effects in bimetallic systems,while others focus on the support,either by modifying acid-base character,oxygen mobility,or by embedding Ni in specific crystallographic *** review provides a very useful tool to orient future work in catalyst development.

changes in fetal mannose and other carbohydrates induced by a maternal insulin infusion in pregnant sheep

Background： The importance of non-glucose carbohydrates, especially mannose and inositol, for normal development is increasingly recognized. Whether pregnancies complicated by abnormal glucose transfer to the fetus also affect the regulation of non-glucose carbohydrates is unknown. In pregnant sheep, maternal insulin infusions were used to reduce glucose supply to the fetus for both short （2-wk） and long （8-wk） durations to test the hypothesis that a maternal insulin infusion would suppress fetal mannose and inositol concentrations. We also used direct fetal insulin infusions （1-wk hyperinsulinemic-isoglycemic clamp） to determine the relative importance of fetal glucose and insulin for regulating non-glucose carbohydrates. Results： A maternal insulin infusion resulted in lower maternal （50%, P 〈 0.01） and fetal （35-45%, P 〈 0.01） mannose concentrations, which were highly correlated （r^2 = 0.69, P 〈 0.01）. A fetal insulin infusion resulted in a 50% reduction of fetal mannose （P 〈 0.05）. Neither maternal nor fetal plasma inositol changed with exogenous insulin infusions. Additionally, maternal insulin infusion resulted in lower fetal sorbitol and fructose （P 〈 0.01）. conclusions： chronically decreased glucose supply to the fetus as well as fetal hyperinsulinemia both reduce fetal non-glucose carbohydrates. Given the role of these carbohydrates in protein glycosylation and lipid production, more research on their metabolism in pregnancies complicated by abnormal glucose metabolism is clearly warranted.

Traumatic brain injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer's disease are three distinct neurological disorders that share common pathophysiological mechanisms involving neuroinflammation. One sequela of neuroinflammation includes the pathologic hyperphosphorylation of tau protein, an endogenous microtubule-associated protein that protects the integrity of neuronal cytoskeletons. Tau hyperphosphorylation results in protein misfolding and subsequent accumulation of tau tangles forming neurotoxic aggregates. These misfolded proteins are characteristic of traumatic brain injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer's disease and can lead to downstream neuroinflammatory processes, including assembly and activation of the inflammasome complex. Inflammasomes refer to a family of multimeric protein units that, upon activation, release a cascade of signaling molecules resulting in caspase-induced cell death and inflammation mediated by the release of interleukin-1β cytokine. One specific inflammasome, the NOD-like receptor protein 3, has been proposed to be a key regulator of tau phosphorylation where it has been shown that prolonged NOD-like receptor protein 3 activation acts as a causal factor in pathological tau accumulation and spreading. This review begins by describing the epidemiology and pathophysiology of traumatic brain injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer's disease. Next, we highlight neuroinflammation as an overriding theme and discuss the role of the NOD-like receptor protein 3 inflammasome in the formation of tau deposits and how such tauopathic entities spread throughout the brain. We then propose a novel framework linking traumatic brain injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer's disease as inflammasomedependent pathologies that exist along a temporal continuum. Finally, we discuss potential therapeutic targets that may intercept this pathway and ultimately minimize long-term neurological decline.

Role of stem cell therapies in treating chronic wounds:A systematic review

BAcKGROUND The impairment of cutaneous wound healing results in chronic,non-healing wounds that are caused by altered wound environment oxygenation,tissue injury,and permissive microbial *** modalities for the treatment of these wounds inadequately address the complex changes involved in chronic wound ***,stem cell therapies have emerged as a potential therapeutic modality to promote cutaneous regeneration through trophic and paracrine *** To investigate current literature regarding use of stem cell therapies for the clinical treatment of chronic,non-healing *** PubMed,EMBASE,cochrane Library,Web of Science,and Scopus were queried with combinations of the search terms“mesenchymal stem cells,”“adult stem cells,”“embryonic stem cells,”“erythroid precursor cells,”“stem cell therapies,”and“chronic wounds”in order to find relevant articles published between the years of 2000 and 2019 to review a 20-year *** lists from the articles were reviewed to identify additional pertinent *** manuscripts(reviews,case reports/series,retrospective/prospective studies,and clinical trials)were evaluated by the authors for their depiction of clinical stem cell therapy *** were extracted from the articles using a standardized collection *** A total of 43 articles describing the use of stem cell therapies for the treatment of chronic wounds were included in this *** stem cell therapies have been explored in in vitro and in vivo applications in the past,recent efforts are geared towards assessing their clinical role.A review of the literature revealed that adipose-derived stem cells,bone marrow-derived stem cells,bone marrowderived mononuclear cells,epidermally-derived mesenchymal stem cells,fibroblast stem cells,keratinocyte stem cells,placental mesenchymal stem cells,and umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells have all been employed in the treatment of chronic wounds of various etiolo

A hybrid tubular standing support for underground mines:compressive behaviour

This paper presents the development of an innovative standing support for underground *** main feature of this standing support is its exterior container,a combination of polyvinyl chloride(PVc)with large rupture strain and fibre-reinforced polymer(FRP)with high strength-to-weight *** demonstrate the advantages of this cementitious grout filled PVc-FRP tubular(PFT)standing support,a series of compression tests were *** variables included the strength of cementitious grout infill material and the thickness of FRP *** tests were also conducted on cementitious grout-filled PVc tubular(PT)support and cementitious grout-filled FRP tubular(FT)*** tests showed that PFT support presents a typical strain-hardening behaviour together with an outstanding axial deformation ability(>20%of the overall height of the support).In addition,the maximum compressive strength of PFT support is much higher than that of the corresponding PT support and FT ***,using thicker FRP jacket or high strength cementitious grout material can enhance the load carrying capacity of PFT *** comparative results indicated that the high performance of PFT support is mainly attributed to the combination of confining constituents(*** and FRP)and infill material.
