Effect of dyspnea and clinical variables on the quality of life and functional capacity in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and congestive heart failure

Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease （COPD） and congestive heart failure （CHF） are two chronic diseases that affect negatively the functional condition and quality of life of patients. We assessed the effect of symptoms and clinical variables on the functional capacity and quality of life in COPD and CHF patients. Methods The study included 42 COPD and 39 CHF patients. In both patient groups, dyspnea was assessed using Borg scale; functional capacity by shuttle-walk and cardiopulmonary exercise test and quality of life by short form-36 （SF36）. Results No statistically significant difference was found in neither of the two disease groups regarding the dyspnea score, shuttle-walk test and the majority of subgroup scores of SF36 （P〉0.05）. A statistically significant difference was observed in peak VO2 in favor of COPD group （P〈0.05）. No significant relationship was established between dyspnea score and forced expiratory volume in one second （FEV1） in COPD patients, and left ventricular ejection fraction （LVEF） in CHF patients （P〉0.05）. A significant negative correlation was observed between dyspnea score and functional capacity tests in both disease groups （P〈0.05）. On the other hand, no relationship was found between LVEF and FEV1 and quality of life and functional capacity （P〉0.05）. Conclusions It was revealed that symptoms have an impact on functional capacity and quality of life in both disease groups, however, objective indicators of disease severity do not show a similar relationship. Therefore, in addition to the objective data related to the disease, we recommend that symptoms should also be taken into consideration to assess cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program and during following-up.

Background:Subclinical micronutrient deficiencies have been gradually becoming more important as a public health problem and drawing attention of the health authorities.Today it has been known that detecting and treating people having deficiency symptoms alone is no longer sufficient.It is important to detect and prevent any deficiency before it displays clinical manifestations.Zinc deficiency is one of the most widespread micronutrient deficiencies.In this study,we aimed to evaluate the zinc status and the associated factors in healthy school-age children.Methods:The study was carried out in schools in Altindag,the district of Ankara.A total of 1063 healthy children,585 girls and 478 boys,aged 5-16 years were included in the study.Serum zinc,high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels and white blood cell count were measured.A serum zinc level 10 years of age the cutoffs for serum zinc concentration were set at 66 μg/dL for females and 70 μg/dL for males.A questionnaire was developed to collect socioeconomic and demographic information of the participants.Results:The prevalence of subclinical zinc deficiency in children attending the study was detected to be 27.8%.This high ratio showed zinc deficiency was an important health problem in the Altindag district of Ankara,Turkey.Conclusions:Evaluating the indicators of zinc deficiency such as serum zinc concentration,dietary zinc intake and stunting prevalence,this study is the most comprehensive epidemiological study performed in children in Turkey.This study reveals the high prevalence of subclinical zinc deficiency and indicates that zinc deficiency is a public health concern for the study population.

Mechanical Properties of Reactive Powder Concretes Produced Using Pumice Powder

We examined the applicability of the pumice aggregate on the concrete formed by considering the reactive powder concrete mixture ratios, for the rigid superstructure concrete road pavement and building construction. The natural pumice aggregate in fibrous and non-fibrous concrete samples was used in the production of concrete by fracturing in 0.1-0.6 mm dimensions in rotor mill. The concreted formed in this way is named after the pumice powder concrete(PPC). The PPC samples produced were taken 7 days as 20 ℃ standard water cure, 28 days as 20 ℃ standard cure and 9 different types of combined cures. The combined cures were applied different temperatures in different durations. PPC samples were subjected to some pressure and flexural tests at the end of the standard water and combined cures. The highest compressive and flexural strengths of PPC samples were obtained after the combined cures: 3 days in 20 ℃ as standard water curing + 2 days in 180 ℃ in drying-oven. The highest compressive strength of PPC samples without any fiber was found to be 47.27 MPa, as for the highest flexural strength, it is found to be 5.23 MPa, in the end of the study. The highest compressive strength of fibrous PPC samples was 51.12 MPa, while flexural strength was 6.57 MPa.

An investigation of gamma ray mass attenuation from 80.1 to 834.86 keV for fabric coating pastes used in textile sector

In the present study,we investigate several textile coating pastes used in the market based on their radiation protection capability for gamma rays.The gamma ray mass absorption coefficients of some coating pastes doped with antimony,boron and silver elements have been investigated.It has been determined that the gamma ray mass attenuation coefficient decreases rapidly as the energy of the gamma rays increases.It was determined that the doping of the main printing paste with silver and antimony considerably increased the gamma ray absorption capability of main paste.However,the doping of the paste with boron reduces the mass absorption of gamma rays.In particular,the gamma ray mass absorption power of the main paste doped with silver and antimony was determined to be useful in the gamma energy range from 80 to 140keV.This indicates that the newly doped textile material may be considered for radiation protection in the case of low-energy gamma rays.

Correlation of neutrophil/lymphocyte and platelet/lymphocyte ratio with visual acuity and macular thickness in age-related macular degeneration

AIM：To investigate the place of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio（NLR） and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio（PLR） in the diagnosis of and prognosis for neovascular age-related macular degeneration（AMD）. METHODS：One hundred AMD patients and 100 healthy controls were included in the study. Blood samples were obtained from the venous blood, which is used for routine analysis, and these samples were subjected to complete blood count. NLR was defined as the neutrophil count divided by the number of lymphocytes, and PLR was defined as the platelet count divided by the number of lymphocytes. RESULTS：No statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups under consideration in terms of demographic features（P〉0.05）. The average NLR in the patient group was found to be significantly higher than that in the healthy control group（P〈0.05）. The average PLR was significantly higher in the patient group as compared to the control group（P〈0.05）. As best corrected visual acuity（BCVA） increased, both NLR and PLR decreased（significant negative correlations at 49.8% and 63.0%, respectively）, whereas as central macular thickness（CMT） increased, both NLR and PLR increased（significant positive correlations at 59.3% and 70.0%, respectively）.CONCLUSION：NLR and PLR levels are higher among neovascular AMD patients as compared to healthy control group. NLR and PLR levels were found to be inversely proportional to BCVA and directly proportional to CMT.

Left Atrial Mechanical Function and Aortic Stiffness in Middle-aged Patients with the First Episode of Atrial Fibrillation

Background： In the early stages of atrial remodeling, aortic stiffness might be an indication of an atrial myopathy, in particular, atrial fibrosis. This study aimed to investigate the association between left atrial （LA） mechanical function, assessed by two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography, and aortic stiffness in middle-aged patients with tile first episode of nonvalvular atrial fibrillation （AF）. Methods： This prospective study included 34 consecutive patients with the first episode of AF, who were admitted to Kartal Kos.;uyolu Research and Training Hospital between May 2013 and October 2015, and 31 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. During the 1^st month （mostly in the first 2 weeks） following their first admission, 34 patients underwent the first pulse wave measurements. Then, 21 patients were recalled for their second pulse wave measurement at 11.8 ± 6.0 months following their initial admission. Echocardiographic and pulse wave findings were compared between these 34 patients and 31 healthy controls. We also compared the pulse wave and echocardiographic findings between the first and second measurements in 21 patients. Results： Pulse wave analysis showed no significant differences between tile AF patients and healthy controls with respect to PWV （ 10.2 ± 2.5 m/s vs. 9.7 ± 2.1 m/s： P = 0.370）, augmentation pressure （9.6 ± 7.4 mmHg vs. 9. 1± 5.7 mmHg; P = 0.740）, and aortic pulse pressure （AoPP; 40.4 ± 14.0 mmHg vs. 42. 1 ±7.6 mmHg, P = 0.550）. The first LA positive peak of strain was inversely related to the augmentation pressure （r 0.30; P = 0.02） and aortic systolic pressure （r - 0.26, P - 0.04）. Comparison between the two consecutive pulse wave measurements in 21 patients showed similar results, except for AoPP. In 21 patients, the AoPP at the second measurement （45.1± 14.1 mmHg） showed a significant increase compared with AoPP at the first measurement （39.0 ±10.6 mmHg, P = 0.028）, which was also higher than that of healthy controls （42.1 ± 7.6 mmHg, P = 0.000）. Electronic and optical properties of semiconductor and graphene quantum dots

Our recent work on the electronic and optical properties of semiconductor and graphene quan- tum dots is reviewed. For strained self-assembled InAs quantum dots on GaAs or InP substrate atomic positions and strain distribution are described using valence-force field approach and con- tinuous elasticity theory. The strain is coupled with the effective mass, k ~ p, effective bond-orbital and atomistic tight-binding models for the description of the conduction and valence band states. The single-particle states are used as input to the calculation of optical properties, with electron- electron interactions included via configuration interaction （CI） method. This methodology is used to describe multiexciton complexes in quantum dot lasers, and in particular the hidden symmetry as the underlying principle of multiexciton energy levels, manipulating emission from biexcitons for entangled photon pairs, and optical control and detection of electron spins using gates. The self-assembled quantum dots are compared with graphene quantum dots, one carbon atom-thick nanostructures. It is shown that the control of size, shape and character of the edge of graphene dots allows to manipulate simultaneously the electronic, optical, and magnetic properties in a single material system.

A Research on Effect of Finishing Applications on Fabric Stiffness and Prediction of Fabric Stiffness

In this study fabric stiffness/softness is examined which is an important element of applications on finishing processes of fabric.It is also studied the prediction of the fabric stiffness/softness with help of different parameters.Specific to this aim three different weft densitoes(30 tel/cm),3 different yarn numbers(20/1,24/1,30/1 Nm)and 3 different weaving patterns were used and 27 different fabrics were weaved.During the weaving process warp yarn is 100%polyester and weft yarn is 67-33%cotton/polyester.Three different finishing processes are applied to the 27 different fabrics(softness finishing treatment,crosslinking finishing and antipilling finishing)in 3 different concentrations and at the end there are 243 sample fabrics gathered.Stiffness test was applied to the samples according to the ASTM(American Society for Testing and Materials)D 4032-94 the Circular Bending Method.Test results were evaluated statistically.It was seen that the established model was related with p<0.0001 also,Artificial Neural Network(ANN)model was formed in order to predict the fabric softness using the test results.MATLAB packet model was used in forming the model.ANN was formed with 5 inputs(fabric plait,weft yarn no,weft density,weft type,finishing concentration)and 1 output(stiffness).ANN model was established using feed forward-back propagation network.There were many trials in forming the ANN and the best results were gathered at the values established with 0.97317 regression value,2 hidden layers and 10 neurons.

The Systemic Inflammation on Transradial vs Transfemoral Approach for Coronary Angiography in Patients with Chronic Coronary Syndrome <br/>—Does Transradial Coronary Angiography Trigger More Inflammation?

Background: Most of the institutions accept the Transradial Access (TRA) as the first approach for patients undergoing Coronary Angiography (CAG) and Percutaneous Coronary Interventions (PCI). Several studies clearly revealed endothelial injury of coronary arteries triggers inflammatory response. In this study, we aimed to evaluate inflammatory respond to CAG and to compare the inflammatory response of TRA and Transfemoral Access (TFA). Methods: In this single-center prospective study 140 consecutive patients presenting with (Chronical Coronary Syndrome) CCS and underwent transradial or transfemoral CAG between December 2017 and December 2018 were included. After exclusions, left 92 patients were divided into two equal groups as TRA and TFA. The primary endpoints were 2nd hour Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha (TNFα), 48th hour high-sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hs-CRP), complication rates, amount of contrast medium, procedure time and fluoroscopy time. Results: Basal characteristics of TRA and TFA groups were similar. A comparison of variables demonstrated that there was no statistical significance in increase in inflammatory markers (TNFα, hs-CRP), complication rates, amount of contrast media and procedure time.
