Effects of estrogen replacement therapy on apoptosis and vascular endothelial growth factor expression in ocular surface epithelial cells:An experimental study

AIM:To investigate the effects of estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) on apoptosis and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression in ocular surface in an experimental rat model.· METHODS:Forty female,Wistar rats were randomized in 4 groups in the *** ERT (17β-estradiol,10g/kg/day) was administered to the first group without ovariectomy and to the second group with ovariectomy for three *** group had only ovariectomy and fourth group had sham *** rats were sacrificed in estrous cycles determined by vaginal smear test and their right eyes were enucleated at the end of the third *** eyes were analyzed by immunohistochemical method for expressions of caspase-3,bcl-2,VEGF and TUNEL assay.· RESULTS:Caspase-3 expression of conjunctival epithelium was significantly higher in group 3 than group 1 (P =0.005),and group 2 (P =0.007).TUNEL score of conjunctival epithelium was significantly higher in group 3 than group 1 (P =0.006).TUNEL score of corneal epithelium was significantly higher in group 3 than group 2 (P =0.012),and group 4 (P =0.002).There was no significant difference between groups in that bcl-2 and VEGF expressions.· CONCLUSION:We determined increased apoptosis in ocular surface epithelial cells in ovariectomized *** and endogen estrogen decreased the apoptosis,and did not result in difference in VEGF expression between the *** may be beneficial for the treatment of apoptosis-mediated ocular surface disorders such as dry *** studies are needed on this subject for a better understanding of the role of estrogen and to provide a new insight for treatment and prevention of apoptosis-mediated ocular surface disorders.

Aim: To investigate the relationship between germ cell degeneration and apoptosis in cryptorchid rats. Methods: Thirteen 21-day-old Wistar rats were made unilaterally cryptorchid by closing the left inguinal canal. At day 30 (Group 1, n=6) and day 60 (Group 2, n=7) after operation, the testes were removed for histopathological examination. The controls (n=8) were sham operated and were sacrificed at day 60. Germ cell apoptosis was assessed by means of the TUNEL method. Results: Spermatogenesis was arrested and the testicular and seminiferous tubular diameters were significantly reduced In the unilateral undescended testes (UUTs) compared with the contralateral descended testes (CDTs) and the control rats. However, atrophic changes, pathological calcification, necrosis of seminiferous tubule, and absence or sloughing of germ cells were not found in all the animals. The spermatocytes were the main type of germ cells undergoing apoptosis in all the groups. In the UUTs, there was a significant and time-dependent increase in the mean apoptotic index. By 60 days after surgery, increased apoptosis in germ cells was also observed in the CDTs. Conclusion: Apoptosis is the predominant mechanism of germ cell death rather than atrophy and necrosis in cryptorchidism.

·AIM: To compare surgically induced astigmatism(SIA)following horizontal rectus muscle recession surgery between suspension recession with both the 'hang-back' technique and conventional recession technique.·METHODS: Totally, 48 eyes of 24 patients who had undergone horizontal rectus muscle recession surgery were reviewed retrospectively. The patients were divided into two groups. Twelve patients were operated on by the hang-back technique(Group 1), and 12 by the conventional recession technique(Group 2). SIA was calculated on the 1stwk, 1stand in the 3rdmo after surgery using the SIA calculator.·RESULTS: SIA was statistically higher in the Group 1all postoperative follow-up. SIA was the highest in the 1st wk, and decreased gradually in both groups.·CONCLUSION: The suspension recession technique induced much more SIA than the conventional recession technique. This difference also continued in the following visits. Therefore, the refractive power should be checked postoperatively in order to avoid refractive *** recession surgery should be the preferred method so as to minimize the postoperative refractive changes in patients with amblyopia.

Carbon dioxide injection into deep saline aquifers results in a variety of strongly coupled physical and chemical processes. In this study, reactive transport simulations using a 2-D radial model were performed to investigate the fate of the injected CO2, the effect of CO2-water-rock interactions on mineral alteration, and the long-term CO2 sequestration mechanisms of the Liujiagou Formation sandstone at the Shenhua CCS（carbon capture and storage） pilot site of China. Carbon dioxide was injected at a constant rate of 0.1 Mt/year for 30 years, and the fluid flow and geochemical transport simulation was run for a period of 10 000 years by the TOUGHREACT code according to the underground conditions of the Liujiagou Formation. The results show that different trapping phases of CO2 vary with time. Sensitivity analyses indicate that plagioclase composition and chlorite presence are the most significant determinants of stable carbonate minerals and CO2 mineral trapping capacity. For arkosic arenite in the Liujiagou Formation, CO2 can be immobilized by precipitation of ankerite, magnesite, siderite, dawsonite, and calcite for different mineral compositions, with Ca（2＋）, Mg（2＋）, Fe（2＋） and Na＋ provided by dissolution of calcite, albite（or oligoclase） and chlorite. This study can provide useful insights into the geochemistry of CO2 storage in other arkosic arenite（feldspar rich sandstone） formations at other pilots or target sites.

AIM To compare the efficacy of resin composite restorations, retained with either polyethylene or zirconia-rich glass fiber posts. METHODS Sixty-two single rooted maxillary and mandibularcentral incisor teeth in forty-four patients (15 males and 29 females; age range 15-32 years) were restored either with an ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene(UHMWP) fiber post (Bondable Reinforcement Ribbon, DENSE, Ribbond, Seattle, WA, United States) or a zircon-rich glass fiber post (Snowpost, Lot H 040; Carbotech, Ganges, France). Then, direct resin composite restoration (Clearfil AP-X, Kuraray) was performed for both post systems in tooth color suitable. Patients were recalled for routine inspections at 6 mo, 1, 2 and 3 *** The restorations were assessed during each recall evaluation according to predetermined clinical and radiographic criteria (periapical lesion; marginal leakage and integrity; color stability; surface stain and loss of retention of the post or the composite buildup material). The follow-up data showed no significant difference in these criteria between polyethylene fibre posts and zirconia-rich glass fibre *** The efficacy of resin composite restorations, retained with either polyethylene or zirconia-rich glass fiber posts were similar, suggesting that both types of fiber post can be used successfully to help retain resin composite restorations.

面对全球气候变化和能源紧缺的巨大压力,CO2地质利用技术成为研究的焦点。为了实现CO2减排及资源化利用,提出了利用超临界CO2增强卤水提取和地热能开采的CO2地质利用集成系统的概念。通过建立CO2注入热卤水储层的质量平衡模型,分析了不同流量的卤水生产、CO2注入以及储层边界流对储层变化的影响,初步评估了该系统的CO2封存量、卤水提取量以及储层流体组成变化的时间尺度。研究表明,注入CO2提供了热卤水层的压力维持,促进卤水和地热资源的可持续开采,对于江陵凹陷研究区9×10^8 m^3的储层有效体积,注入9.95×10^6 t CO2可提取17.12×10^6 t卤水,时间尺度超过30a。对于50~1 000kg/s的卤水生产速度,可以产生0.9~18.8 MW电力。同时,该技术增加了CO2的封存容量和效率,有利于CO2大规模安全封存,经济和环境效益显著。

Surgically Induced Corneal Astigmatism Following Cataract Surgery

Aim: To study the surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) caused by two different type main incisions in phacoemulsification. Methods: Sixty-eight eyes of 65 patients who underwent phacoemul-sification were randomly divided into two groups according to main incision type: 2.8 mm superior limbal incision (in Group 1) and 2.8 mm upper clear corneal incision (in Group 2). Surgical techniques did not differ between the groups except for the main incisions. All patients received detailed ophthalmological examination in addition to keratometry at the pre- and post-operatively. The preoperative and postoperative astigmatisms were calculated by the vector analysis method and the SIA was compared between the groups. Results: The mean SIA values were 1.3 ± 0.67 D, 0.89 ± 0.47 D, 0.77 ± 37 D in Group 1 and 1.42 ± 0.62 D, 1.15 ± 0.54 D, 0.94 ± 0.47 D in Group 2 on the first day, first week and first month postoperatively, respectively. According to the vector analysis, SIA was less in Group 1 than Group 2;although the difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Although less astigmatism was detected in the superior limbal incision group, this difference was not statistically significant.
