Hydration status,body composition,and anxiety status in aeronautical military personnel from Spain:a crosss-ectional study

Background: An adequate hydration status is critical to ensure efficiency during mental and physical *** goal was to assess the hydration status of a Spanish group of aeronautical military men and to determine the association of hydration status with body composition and ***: A total of 188 men were evaluated through a validated hydration questionnaire, anthropometric and biochemical parameters, and an anxiety questionnaire. Based on these methods, the criteria of hydration were ***: Of the total sample, 81% met the hydration criteria(urine color = well hydrated, water balance ≥0 ml, and total water intake/weight ≥35 ml/kg), and 19% did not meet the hydration criteria(urine color = not sufficiently hydrated or dehydrated, water balance <0 ml, and total water intake/weight <35 ml/kg). Subjects not meeting the hydration criteria had lower urine pH, negative water balance, and lower water intake. The latter also had higher anxiety status(score=4 vs. 3, P=0.026), weight [(84.7±10.5) kg vs.(80.5±10.2) kg], body mass index [(26.3±3.1) kg/m;vs.(25.2±2.8) kg/m;], body fat [(22.3±5.6)% vs.(18.3±6.5)%], urine specific gravity, and urine color. Using a logistic binary regression model, hydration status was related significantly with the percentage of body fat(P=0.004), but no relation was found with age, comorbidities, or medications. Furthermore, total water intake/weight was positively correlated with percentage of body water(r=0.357, P=0.000) and negatively with body fat(kg)(r=–0.427, P=0.000), percentage of body fat(r=–0.405, P=0.000), and waist/hip ratio(r=–0.223, P=0.002). Based on a linear regression model, total water intake/weight was related significantly with percentage of body fat(P=0.001) and percentage of body water content(P=0.035). Application of the Cross Wavelet Transform to Solar Activity and Major Earthquakes Occurred in Chile

Historical earthquakes registered in Chile (from 1900 up to 2015) with epicenters located between 17?30'S and 56?0'S latitude and yearly mean total sunspot number have been considered in order to evaluate a significant linkage between them. The occurrence of strong earthquakes along Chile and the sunspots activity are analyzed to inspect possible influence of solar cycles on earthquakes. The cross wavelet transform and wavelet coherence analysis were applied for sequences of sunspots and earthquakes activity. An 8 - 12 years modulation of earthquakes activity has been identified.

Grafting effects on bioactive compounds,chemical and agronomic traits of‘Corbarino’tomato grown under greenhouse healthy conditions

In tomatoes,grafting onto resistant rootstocks represents an effective strategy to control several soil-borne diseases that reduce crop profitability,especially for landraceswith little or no resistance tomultiple pathogens/*** this study,the high-value‘Corbarino’tomato landrace was grafted onto seven commercial Solanum interspecific rootstocks to evaluate graft compatibility,yield performance,and qualitative characteristics under greenhouse healthy *** rootstocks were themost effective in improving fruit yield without negatively affecting the carpometric,technological,and health-related traits of the traditional tomato.‘Dinafort’rootstock increased fresh and dry yield,harvest index,and fruit/clusters,while mean fruit weight,shape index,total and soluble solid content,simple sugars,organic acids,flavonoids,ascorbic acid,and trans-lycopene content did not differ with respect to the ungrafted‘Corbarino’.‘Interpro’rootstock also showed promising results for the overall yield and quality traits,although it reduced the trans-lycopene content in the fruit.‘Silex’rootstock showed the highest harvest index as result of decreased *** fruit quality induced by‘Silex’was satisfactory and high levels of simple sugars,flavonoids,ascorbic acid,and trans-lycopene were also ***,graft success,especially for‘Dinafort’and‘Silex’,needs to be improved by investigating more suitable methods for seedling production,grafting,acclimatization,etc.

Tau-induced neurodegeneration: mechanisms and targets

The accumulation of hyperphosphorylated tau is a common feature of several dementias. Tau is one of the brain microtubule-associated proteins. Here we discuss tau＇s functions in microtubule assembly and stabilization and with regard to its interactions with other proteins. We describe and analyze important post-translational modifications： hyperphosphorylation, ubiquitination, glycation, glycosytation, nitration, polyamination, proteolysis, acetylation, and methylation. We discuss how these post-translational modifications can alter tau＇s biological function. We analyze the role of mitochondrial health in neurodegeneration. We propose that microtubules could be a therapeutic target and review different approaches. Finally, we consider whether tau accumulation or its conformational change is related to tau-induced neurodegeneration, and propose a mechanism of neurodegeneration.

Imatinib-induced fatal acute liver failure

Imatinib mesylate is a drug that has been approved for treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in blast crisis, accelerated or chronic phase, and also for advanced gastrointestinal stromal tumors. Severe hepatic toxicity and three deaths from hepatic failure have been reported. We report the case of a 51-year-old woman who was admitted to our institution with severe acute hepatitis. She was diagnosed with CML and began treatment with imatinib mesylate at a dose of 400 mg/d. Five months after beginning treatment, she developed severe hepatitis associated with coagulopathy, and was admitted to our institution. She had been consuming acetaminophen 500-1000 mg/d after the onset of symptoms. She had a progressive increase in bilirubin level and a marked decrease of clotting factor Ⅴ. Five days after admission, grade Ⅱ encephalopathy developed and she was referred for liver transplantation. Her clinical condition progressively deteriorated, and 48 h after being referred for transplantation she suffered a cardiac arrest and died. This report adds concern about the possibility of imatinib-mesylate-induced hepatotoxicity and liver failure, particularly in the case of concomitant use with acetaminophen. Liver function tests should be carefully monitored during treatment and, with the appearance of any elevation of liver function tests, treatment should be discontinued.

Wheat genotypic variability in grain yield and carbon isotope discrimination under Mediterranean conditions assessed by spectral reflectance

A collection of 368 advanced lines and cultivars of spring wheat（Triticum aestivum L.） from Chile, Uruguay, and CIMMYT（Centro Internacional de Mejoramiento de Maíz y Trigo）, with good agronomic characteristics were evaluated under the Mediterranean conditions of central Chile. Three different water regimes were assayed： severe water stress（SWS, rain fed）, mild water stress（MWS; one irrigation around booting）, and full irrigation（FI; four irrigations： at tillering,flag leaf appearance, heading, and middle grain filling）. Traits evaluated were grain yield（GY）, agronomical yield components,days from sowing to heading, carbon isotope discrimination（△^13C） in kernels, and canopy spectral reflectance. Correlation analyses were performed for 70 spectral reflectance indices（SRI） and the other traits evaluated in the three trials. GY and △^13C were the traits best correlated with SRI, particularly when these indices were measured during grain filling. However,only GY could be predicted using a single regression, with ResearchNormalized Difference Moisture Index（NDMI2： 2,200; 1,100）having the best fit to the data for the three trials. For △^13C, only individual regressions could be forecast under FI（r^2： 0.25–0.37）and MWS（r^2： 0.45–0.59） but not under SWS（r^2： 0.03–0.09）.NIR‐based SRI proved to be better predictors than those that combine visible and NIR wavelengths.

Synthesis of activated carbons from black sapote seeds,characterization and application in the elimination of heavy metals and textile dyes

Many different techniques may be used to remove industrial pollutants from wastewater. Adsorption using activated carbon has been reported to be an effective method. This work proposes the use of a vegetable residue(black sapote seeds) as a raw material for its synthesis. These carbons were chemically activated using phosphoric acid and carbonized at 673 and 873 K. Adsorption isotherms were constructed for the textile dyes on the carbons, and this data was treated using Langmuir’s equation to quantitatively describe the adsorption process. The synthesized carbons were characterized using FTIR, EA, SEM, Nitrogen adsorption(specific surface areas of 879 and 652 m2·g-1), and their points of zero charge(2.1 and 2.3). It was possible to adsorb both heavy metals and textile dyes present in aqueous solutions and wastewaters using these activated carbons. Heavy metals were adsorbed almost completely by both carbons. Cationic dyes where adsorbed(58–59.8 mg·g-1) in greater amounts compared to anionic dyes(10–58.8 mg·g-1). The amount of anionic dyes adsorbed increased almost 30% by changing the pH of the solutions. One of the carbons was thermally regenerated on three occasions without losing its adsorption capacity and it was proved in a flow system.

The present study was conducted to investigate the ability of Saccharomyces cerevisiae RC016(Sc)-based feed additive to reduce liver toxicity,residual aflatoxin B1(AFB1)levels and influence intestinal structure in broiler chickens fed chronic aflatoxin B1-contaminated diets.A total of 100 one-day-old male commercial line(Ross)broiler chickens were divided into 4 treatments,with 5 pens per treatment and 5 broiler chickens per *** were randomly assigned to 4 treatments,which were namely treatment 1(T1),control diet(CD);T2,CD+Sc at 1 g/kg;T3,CD+AFB1 at 100μg/kg;T4,CD+Sc at 1 g/kg+AFB1 at100μg/*** liver histopathology of broiler chickens fed diets with AFB1 showed diffused microvacuolar fatty *** addition of Sc showed normal hepatocytes similar to the *** small intestine villi from AFB1 group showed atrophy,hyperplasia of goblet cells,prominent inflammatory infiltrate and *** contrast,the small intestine villi from birds that received the yeast plus AFB1 showed an absence of inflammatory infiltrate,and atrophy;moreover,a lower number of goblet cells compared to the groups with AFB1 was *** morphometric intestine studies showed that a significant decrease(P0.05),there was a tendency to improve these *** residual levels of AFB1 in livers were significantly reduced(P<0.05)in the presence of the *** present work demonstrated that the addition of Sc alone or in combination with AFB1 in the broiler chicken diets had a beneficial effect in counteracting the toxic effects of AFB1 in livers besides improving the histomorphometric parameters and modulating the toxic effect of AFB1 in the intestine.

Glutamine synthetase activity and glutamate uptake in hippocampus and frontal cortex in portal hypertensive rats

AIM: To study glutamine synthetase (GS) activity and glutamate uptake in the hippocampus and frontal cortex (FC) from rats with prehepatic portal vein hypertension. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were divided into shamoperated group and a portal hypertension (PH) group with a regulated stricture of the portal vein. Animals were sacrificed by decapitation 14 d after portal vein stricture. GS activity was determined in the hippocampus and FC. Specific uptake of radiolabeled L-glutamate was studied using synaptosome-enriched fractions that were freshly prepared from both brain areas. RESULTS: We observed that the activity of GS increased in the hippocampus of PH rats, as compared to control animals, and decreased in the FC. A significant decrease in glutamate uptake was found in both brain areas, and was more marked in the hippocampus. The decrease in glutamate uptake might have been caused by a deficient transport function, signif icantly and persistent increase in this excitatory neurotransmitter activity. CONCLUSION: The presence of moderate ammonia blood levels may add to the toxicity of excitotoxic glutamate in the brain, which causes alterations in brain function. Portal vein stricture that causes portal hypertension modif ies the normal function in some brain regions.
