Acute kidney injury in severely injured patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit

Background:Our objective was to identify possible associations between clinical and laboratory variables and the risk of developing acute kidney injury(AKI)in severely injured patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit(ICU)for whom creatine kinase(CK)levels were available.Methods:for this retrospective observational study,we analyzed adult trauma patients admitted to the ICU from 2011 to 2015 at fundación Valle del Lili(fVL)University Hospital.Our primary outcome was the incidence of AKI.Multivariate regression analysis was used to assess risk factors for this outcome.Results:A total of 315 patients were included.The trauma mechanisms were blunt(n=130),penetrating(n=66)and blast(n=44)trauma.The median[interquartile range,(IQR)of injury severity score(ISS)was 21(16–29).AKI developed in 75 patients(23.8%).Multivariate regression analysis revealed that the thoracic abbreviated injury scale(AIS)value(median(IQR)in the AKI group:3(0–4)],Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation(APACHE Ⅱ)score[median(IQR)in the AKI group:18(10–27)],CK greater than 5000 U/L,lactic acid concentration at admission,and dobutamine administration were independently associated with AKI.Conclusions:We found that age,APACHE Ⅱ score,thoracic trauma,lactic acidosis,and dobutamine administration were independently associated with AKI.Trauma surgeons need to be aware of the increased odds of AKI if one of these factors is identified during the evaluation and treatment of injured patients.

Identification and functional characterization of fish IL‑17 receptors suggest important roles in the response to nodavirus infection

Th17 is a lymphocyte T helper(Th)subpopulation relevant in the control and regulation of the immune response characterized by the production of interleukin(IL)-17.This crucial cytokine family acts through their binding to the IL-17 receptors(IL-17R),having up to six members.Although the biology of fish Th17 is well-recognized,the molecular and functional characterization of IL-17 and IL-17R has been limited.Thus,our aim was to identify and characterize the IL-17R repertory and regulation in the two main Mediterranean cultured fish species,the gilthead seabream(Sparus aurata)and the European sea bass(Dicentrarchus labrax).Our in silico results showed the clear identification of six members in each fish species,from IL-17RA to IL-17RE-like,with well-conserved gene structure and protein domains with their human orthologues.All of them showed wide and constitutive transcription in naïve tissues but with highest levels in mucosal tissues,namely skin,gill or intestine.In leucocytes,T mitogens showed the strongest up-regulation in most of the il17 receptors though il17ra resulted in inhibition by most stimulants.Interestingly,in vivo nodavirus infection resulted in alterations on the transcription of il17 receptors.While nodavirus infection led to some increments in the il17ra,il17rb,il17rc and il17rd transcripts in the susceptible European sea bass,many down-regulations were observed in the resistant gilthead seabream.Our data identify the presence and conservation of six coding IL-17R in gilthead seabream and European sea bass as well as their differential regulation in vitro and upon nodavirus infection.

Radiative loss of coherence in free electrons:a long-range quantum phenomenon

Quantum physics rules the dynamics of small objects as they interact over microscopic length scales.Nevertheless,quantum correlations involving macroscopic distances can be observed between entangled photons as well as in atomic gases and matter waves at low temperatures.The long-range nature of the electromagnetic coupling between charged particles and extended objects could also trigger quantum phenomena over large distances.Here,we reveal a manifestation of quantum mechanics that involves macroscopic distances and results in a nearly complete depletion of coherence associated with which-way free-electron interference produced by electron-radiation coupling in the presence of distant extended objects.This is a ubiquitous effect that we illustrate through a rigorous theoretical analysis of a two-path electron beam interacting with a semi-infinite metallic plate and find the inter-path coherence to vanish proportionally to the path separation at zero temperature and exponentially at finite temperature.The investigated regime of large distances originates in the coupling of the electron to radiative modes assisted by diffraction at material structures but without any involvement of material excitations.Besides the fundamental interest of this macroscopic quantum phenomenon,our results suggest an approach to measuring the vacuum temperature and nondestructively sensing the presence of distant objects.

Luminescence constitutes a unique source of insight into hot carrier processes in metals,including those in plasmonic nanostructures used for sensing and energy applications.However,being weak in nature,metal luminescence remains poorly understood,its microscopic origin strongly debated,and its potential for unraveling nanoscale carrier dynamics largely unexploited.Here,we reveal quantum-mechanical effects in the luminescence emanating from thin monocrystalline gold flakes.Specifically,we present experimental evidence,supported by first-principles simulations,to demonstrate its photoluminescence origin(i.e.,radiative emission from electron/hole recombination)when exciting in the interband regime.Our model allows us to identify changes to the measured gold luminescence due to quantum-mechanical effects as the gold film thickness is reduced.Excitingly,such effects are observable in the luminescence signal from flakes up to 40 nm in thickness,associated with the out-of-plane discreteness of the electronic band structure near the fermi level.We qualitatively reproduce the observations with first-principles modeling,thus establishing a unified description of luminescence in gold monocrystalline flakes and enabling its widespread application as a probe of carrier dynamics and light-matter interactions in this material.Our study paves the way for future explorations of hot carriers and charge-transfer dynamics in a multitude of material systems.

Oligodendrocytes(OLs),glial cells that provide myelin sheaths to axons in the central nervous system(CNS),have a dual role.first,this myelin fatty cover around the axons protects the nerves and is crucial for the saltatory propagation of action potentials.Second and not less important,OLs provide trophic support to neurons and axons.Thus,OL metabolism is important for OL well-being and the proper accomplishment of their functions,and OL metabolism energetics directly affect the energy metabolism of neighboring neurons.

Using biopolymers as wall materials in spray drying poses challenges,particularly in attaining flowability and thermal stability among their physicochemical properties.This paper addresses these challenges by preparing microparticles using a blend of starch–chitosan and a poloxamer,commercially named Pluronic®f127.We aimed to elucidate the effects of varying poloxamer concentrations on the resulting particles through the spray drying technique.Blends with a poloxamer concentration of 3%(w/v)demonstrated a notably higher yield,especially when compared to those with 0%and 1%concentrations.Microparticles with 3%and 5%(w/v)poloxamer displayed a narrower particle size distribution,with the 3%blend showing a superior yield attributed to arrangements of blend components that improve flowability.X-ray diffraction analysis showcased the characteristic peaks of A-type starch form,with shifts suggesting enhanced interactions between components.Microparticles with increased poloxamer content showed elevated thermal degradation temperatures,with the 3%blend registering a significant rise,opening avenues for encapsulating heat-sensitive bioactive.This study primarily focuses on the preparation and basic characterization of microparticles.It underscores the potential of blends with optimal poloxamer concentrations in microencapsulation,emphasizing further research to harness their capabilities thoroughly.

High CO_(2)permeation using a new Ce_(0.85)Gd_(0.15)O_(2-δ)-LaNiO_(3)composite ceramic–carbonate dual-phase membrane

This work shows the synthesis,characterization and evaluation of dense-ceramic membranes made of Ce_(0.85)Gd_(0.15)O_(2-δ)-LaNiO_(3)(CG-LN)composites,where the fluorite-perovskite ratio(CG:LN)was varied as follows:75:25,80:20 and 85:15 wt.%.Supports were initially characterized by XRD,SEM and electrical conductivity(using vacuum and oxygen atmospheres),to determine the composition,microstructural and ionic-electronic conductivity properties.Later,supports were infiltrated with an eutectic carbonates mixture,producing the corresponding dense dual-phase membranes,in which CO_(2)permeation tests were conducted.Here,CO_(2)permeation experiments were performed from 900 to 700℃,in the presence and absence of oxygen(flowed in the sweep membrane side).Results showed that these composites possess high CO_(2)permeation properties,where the O_(2)addition significantly improves the ionic conduction on the sweep membrane side.Specifically,the GC80-LN20 composition presented the best results due to the following physicochemical characteristics:high electronic and ionic conductivity,appropriate porosity,interconnected porous channels,as well as thermal and chemical stabilities between the composite support and carbonate phases.

Morphometry and Mineral Content in the Seeds and Soil of Two Species of Argemone L.(Papaveraceae)in the Central Part of the Chihuahuan Desert

The genus Argemone L.(Papaveraceae)is found widely distributed in Mexico’s Chihuahuan Desert(CD).Some species of this genus are of phytochemical or ethnobotanical interest.They are inedible plants considered as scrubs.To date they have not been broadly studied;thus,their ecology is,to our knowledge,unknown.The present work was centered around carrying out a morphometric analysis and the determination of minerals in the soil and seeds of the wild populations of Argemone at sites belonging to two ecoregions of the CD in Mexico.In April 2021 and April 2022,seeds of Argemone spp.,and soil samples were collected at 10 sites of the CD.The seeds were selected under a randomized design,and weight,length,diameter,thickness,buoyancy,and mineral content were determined.The soil samples were obtained under the Mexican regulation NOM-021-RECNAT-2000,and determinations of mineral content,electrical conductivity,apparent density,and soluble anions were performed.The information obtained was grouped by variable,species,and place of precedence.The statistical tests consisted of an ANOVA,Tukey means tests considering p≤0.05,and a Principal Components Analysis.Argemone pleiacantha exhibited differences in terms of weight(f=54.79,p=0.001),length(f=90.83,p=0.001),thickness(f=104.89,p=0.001),and diameter(f=155.82,p=0.001),and the differences in Argemone mexicana were in weight(f=46.71,p=0.001),thickness(f=187.49,p=0.001),length(f=191.56,p=0.001),and diameter(f=215.83,p=0.001).The evaluated seeds reached their maximal imbibition velocity at 24 h of evaluation.The content of the micro-and macro-nutrients analyzed in the seeds and soil suggest a tight relation with the morphometric characteristics of the seeds.

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have gained great attention as promising photocatalysts for hydrogen generation.However,due to their poor stability in water,the use of aqueous hydrohalic acid solutions is specifically required for an efficient hydrogen evolution.Herein,three novel photoactive lead-free hybrid perovskites based on bismuth and triazolium cations(denoted as IEf-15,IEf-16,and IEf-17(IEf stands for IMDEA energy frameworks))were synthesized and fully characterized(structural,compositional,optical,etc.).further,these solids were proposed as photocatalysts for the challenging gas phase overall water splitting(OWS)reaction.Accordingly,IEf-16 thin films exhibited a remarkable photocatalytic activity in both H_(2) and O_(2) evolution,as a consequence of its appropriate bandgap and energy-band alignment,achieving hydrogen evolution rates ofμmol·g_(H_(2))^(-)1846 and 360 after 24 h under ultraviolet-visible(UV-vis)irradiation or simulated solar irradiation,respectively.This study additionally highlights the remarkable structural and photochemical stability of IEf-16 under different operational conditions(i.***.water volume,irradiation and temperature),paving the way for green hydrogen production from OWS using perovskite-based photocatalysts.

Predicting grain size-dependent superplastic properties in friction stir processed ZK30 magnesium alloy with machine learning methods

The aim of this work is to predict, for the first time, the high temperature flow stress dependency with the grain size and the underlaid deformation mechanism using two machine learning models, random forest（Rf） and artificial neural network（ANN）. With that purpose, a ZK30 magnesium alloy was friction stir processed（fSP） using three different severe conditions to obtain fine grain microstructures（with average grain sizes between 2 and 3 μm） prone to extensive superplastic response. The three friction stir processed samples clearly deformed by grain boundary sliding（GBS） deformation mechanism at high temperatures. The maximum elongations to failure, well over 400% at high strain rate of 10-2s-1, were reached at 400 ℃ in the material with coarsest grain size of 2.8 μm, and at 300 ℃ for the finest grain size of 2 μm. Nevertheless, the superplastic response decreased at 350 ℃ and 400 ℃ due to thermal instabilities and grain coarsening, which makes it difficult to assess the operative deformation mechanism at such temperatures. This work highlights that the machine learning models considered, especially the ANN model with higher accuracy in predicting flow stress values, allow determining adequately the superplastic creep behavior including other possible grain size scenarios.
