Improving modeling of low-altitude particulate matter emission and dispersion:A cotton gin case study

Monitoring and modeling of airborne particulate matter(PM)from low-altitude sources is becoming an important regulatory target as the adverse health consequences of PM become better ***,application of models not specifically designed for simulation of PM from low-altitude emissions may bias *** address this problem,we describe the modification and validation of an air dispersion model for the simulation of lowaltitude PM dispersion from a typical cotton ginning *** found that the regulatory recommended model(AERMOD)overestimated pollutant concentrations by factors of 64.7,6.97 and 7.44 on average for PM 2.5,PM 10,and TSP,*** concentrations were negatively correlated with height(p<0.05),distance from source(p<0.05)and standard deviation of wind direction(p<0.001),and positively correlated with average wind speed(p<0.001).Based on these results,we developed dispersion correction factors for AERMOD and cross-validated the revised model against independent observations,reducing overestimation factors to 3.75,1.52 and 1.44 for PM 2.5,PM 10 and TSP,*** reductions in model error may be obtained from use of additional observations and refinement of dispersive correction *** generally,the correction permits the validated adjustment and application of pre-existing models for risk assessment and development of remediation *** same approach may also be applied to improve simulations of other air pollutants and environmental conditions of concern.

Salt stress might be an important factor that decreases the emergence of seedlings and reduces plants'growth,causing their endangered ***,the effects of salt stress on the germination of the Mediterranean species are less *** strictissimum(Salzm.)Arrigoni,part of the group related to Limonium articulatum(Loisel.)Kuntze,is a Cyrno-Sardinian endemism,which is included in the International Union for Conservation of Nature(IUCN)Red Lists as Endangered(EN).Fresh seeds of *** harvested from the only known population in Sardinia and a population in southeastern Corsica were used with the aims to study the effects of temperature and salinity on the seed germination and to evaluate the ability to recover their germination after exposure to salt *** both populations,empty fruits with a lower percentage were observed in Sardinia than in *** seeds showed a high germination capacity,which was not influenced by temperature and did not even differ between the two *** with non-saline condition,the presence of salt in the substrate,independently of the concentration tested,inhibited seed germination in both populations,with germination percentages never exceeding 40%.The Sardinian population showed a recovery capacity after exposure to high salt stress,always above 50%regardless of the salt concentration and incubation temperature *** seeds previously exposed to 125 mM NaCl at 30℃ had the lowest recovery percentage(56%),while the highest recovery percentage(84%)was recorded at 25℃ with a concentration of 250 mM ***,the Corsican population recorded a higher recovery percentage(54%)in seeds previously exposed to 500 mM NaCl at 20℃,while for the concentration of 125 mM NaCl,the best recovery percentage(11%)was recorded at 30℃.The ability of *** to recover germination after salt exposure can be interpreted as an adaptation to the coastal habitats in which it *** study provides n

Coseismic site response and slope instability using periodic boundary conditions in the material point method

Oil recovery tests with ionic liquids: A review and evaluation of 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium triflate

The main advantages of the use of ionic liquids in enhanced oil recovery are their tunability and stability in harsh environmental conditions. In this work, a comprehensive review of ionic liquids proposed to improve current chemical oil recovery methods has been presented, focusing on core flooding experiments. With an almost infinite number of possible ionic liquids, the amount of experiments carried out up to now has been very limited. However, results are promising, with additional recovery after secondary flooding of up to 32% of the original oil in place. Most formulations with ionic liquids have been proposed for sandstone reservoirs, the number of studies with carbonate cores being very scarce. The possibilities of a new room temperature surface active ionic liquid, 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium triflate,for this application were analyzed. It was shown that it is able to drastically reduce the water/oil interfacial tension. An optimized formulation was proposed for carbonate reservoirs. After secondary flooding with brine, an additional recovery of 10.5% of original oil in place was achieved at room conditions. A combination of the proposed method followed by a polymer flooding step with polyacrylamide led to a lesser but still significant recovery, reducing the costs associated to the ionic liquid.

Endoscopic resection for early gastric cancer:Towards a global understanding

Prostate cancer （PCa） is the most common solid-organ cancer in American males and the second most common cause of cancer-related death in men. With the advent of prostate-specific antigen screening, death from PCa continues to decline. However, recent evidence suggests that there is now a trend towards increasing incidence.1 Current screening strategies result in increased incidence of low-risk PCa and importantly, the diagnosis of PCa is becoming more common in younger patients.2 The majority of early-stage PCa patients have a high likelihood of disease free survival after treatment.

Aims There are a number of mechanisms that regulate germination;among these,seed dormancy,one of the most important,is an adaptative mechanism in plants to promote survival by dispersing germination in space and time until environmental conditions are favourable for *** main goals of this study were to determine the tem-perature requirements for seed dormancy release and germination of Gentiana lutea ***,to identify the class and level of seed dormancy and to suggest an optimal germination *** Seeds belonging to two different localities were subjected to vari-ous pre-treatments,including cold stratification(0 and 5°C),warm stratification(25/10°C)and different combinations of these,and then incubated at a range of constant temperatures(5-25°C)and 25/10°*** growth during pre-treatments and incubation con-ditions were assessed at different times by measuring the embryo to seed length ratio(E:S ratio).The final germination percentage(FGP)and the germination rate(t50)were *** Findings Fleshy mature seeds of *** *** have linear under-developed *** stratification at 0°C was effective in overcoming the physiological dormancy(PD)and promoted embryo growth and subsequent *** cold stratifica-tion at 0°C,both the root and the shoot emerged readily under a wide range of *** *** seeds showed an intermediate complex morphophysiological dormancy(MPD).As regards the optimal germination protocol for this taxon,we suggest a period of cold stratification at ca.0°C followed by seed incuba-tion at 10-20°*** optimal germination temperatures found for seeds of this taxon,as well as its pre-chilling requirement at 0°C,suggest that it is well adapted to a temperate climate;this behavior highlights an increasing threat from global warming for ***,which could reduce the level of natural emergence in the field,prejudicing also the long-term persistence of the natural popula-t
