Three major elements, carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen, in twenty-four bituminous coal samples, were measured by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. Argon and helium were applied as ambient gas to enhance the signals and eliminate the interference of nitrogen from surrounding air. The relative standard deviation of the related emission lines and the performance in the partial least squares （PLS） modeling were compared for different ambient environments. The results showed that argon not only improved the intensity, but also reduced signal fluctuation. The PLS model also had the optimal performance in multi-element analysis using argon as ambient gas. The root mean square error of prediction of carbon concentration decreased from 4.25% in air to 3.49% in argon, while the average relative error reduced from 4.96% to 2.98%. Hydrogen line demonstrated similar improvement. Yet, the nitrogen lines were too weak to be detected even in an argon environment which suggested the nitrogen signal measured in air come from the breakdown of nitrogen molecules in the atmosphere.

Background： The impact of fasting plasma glucose （FPG） on survival outcomes in patients with acute heart failure （HF） is unclear, and the relationship between intensity of glycemic control of FPG in diabetes mellitus （DM） patients and HF prognosis remains uncertain. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the prognostic impact of FPG in patients with acute HF. Methods： A total of 624 patients hospitalized with acute HF from October 2000 to April 2014 were enrolled in this study. All patients were stratified by three groups according to their admission FPG levels （i.e., DM, impaired fasting glucose [IFG], and non-DM）. All-cause and cardiovascular mortality was the primary end point, and HF re-hospitalization was the secondary end point during follow-up period. Results： A total of 587 patients were included in final analysis. The all-cause mortality rates of patients with DM, IFG, and non-DM were 55.5%, 40.3%, and 39.2%, with significant difference （P = 0.001 ）. Moreover, compared with those with IFG （34.3%） and non-DM （32.6%）, patients with DM had significantly higher rate of cardiovascular mortality （45.1%）. Multiple Cox regression analysis showed that DM as well as IFG was related to all-cause mortality （DM： hazard ratio [HR] = 1.936, P 〈 0.001; IFG： FIR = 1.672, P = 0.019） and cardiovascular mortality （DM： HR = 1.739, P 〈 0.001; IFG： HR = 1.817, P = 0.013）. However, they were both unrelated to HF re-hospitalization. DM patients with strictly controlled blood glucose （FPG 〈3.9 mmol/L） had higher all-cause mortality than patients with non-DM, IFG, and DM patients with moderately controlled glucose （3.9 mmol/L_〈 FPG 〈7.0 mmol/L）. Likewise, both the primary end point and secondary end point were found to be worse in DM patients with poorly controlled blood glucose （FPG ≥7.0 mmol/L）. Conclusions： IFG and DM were associated with higher all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality in patients with acute HF. The association between mortality and admission FPG in DM

Background: Transarterial chemoembolization(TACE) is the most commonly used adjuvant therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) after curative resection. Responses to TACE are variable due to tumor and patient heterogeneity. We had previously demonstrated that expression of Granulin-epithelin precursor(GEP) and ATP-dependent binding cassette(ABC)B5 in liver cancer stem cells was associated with chemoresistance. The present study aimed to evaluate the association between GEP/ABCB5 expression and response to adjuvant TACE after curative resection for HCC. Methods: Patients received adjuvant TACE after curative resection for HCC and patients received curative resection alone were identified from a prospectively collected database. Clinical samples were retrieved for biomarker analysis. Patients were categorized into 3 risk groups according to their GEP/ABCB5 status for survival analysis: low(GEP-/ABCB5-), intermediate(either GEP +/ABCB5-or GEP-/ABCB5 +) and high(GEP +/ABCB5 +). Early recurrence(recurrence within 2 years after resection) and disease-free survival were analyzed. Results: Clinical samples from 44 patients who had followed-up for more than 2 years were retrieved for further biomarker analysis. Among them, 18 received adjuvant TACE and 26 received surgery alone. Patients with adjuvant TACE in the intermediate risk group was associated with significantly better overall survival and 2-year disease-free survival than those who had surgery alone( P = 0.036 and P = 0.011, respectively). Adjuvant TACE did not offer any significant differences in the early recurrence rate, 2-year disease-free survival and overall survival for patients in low and high risk groups. Conclusions: Adjuvant TACE can only provide survival benefits for patients in the intermediate risk group(either GEP +/ABCB5-or GEP-/ABCB5 +). A larger clinical study is warranted to confirm its role in patient selection for adjuvant TACE.

As the lightest structural metal and one of the most abundant metallic elements on earth, magnesium(Mg) has been used as an "industrial metal" for lightweighting in the transportation and electronics industries, in addition to other traditional applications in aluminum alloying,steel desulfurization and protective anodes. In recent years, research has shown significant potential for Mg to become a "technology metal"in a variety of new applications from energy storage/battery to biomedical products. However, global Mg production has shown steady but moderate growth in the last three decades. Mg applications as an industry metal are still limited due to some sustainability concerns of primary Mg production, as well as a number of technical issues related to the structural and corrosion performance of commercial Mg *** Mg applications as an industrial or technology metal face tremendous technical challenges, which have been reflected in the intensified global research efforts in the last twenty years. This paper will review some past and present applications, and discuss future opportunities and challenges for Mg research and applications for the global Mg community.

Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances(PFAS)are persistent organic pollutants of concern be-cause of their ubiquitous presence in surface and ground water;analytical methods that can be used for rapid comprehensive exposure assessment and fingerprinting of PFAS are *** the fires at the Intercontinental Terminals Company(ITC)in Deer Park,TX in 2019,large quantities of PFAS-containing firefighting foams were *** release of these substances into the Houston Ship Channel/Galveston Bay(HSC/GB)prompted con-cerns over the extent and level of PFAS contamination.A targeted liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(LC-MS/MS)-based study of temporal and spatial patterns of PFAS associated with this incident revealed presence of 7 species;their levels gradually de-creased over a 6-month *** the targeted LC-MS/MS analysis was focused on about 30 PFAS molecules,it may have missed other PFAS compounds present in firefighting ***,we utilized untargeted LC-ion mobility spectrometry-mass spectrome-try(LC-IMS-MS)-based analytical approach for a more comprehensive characterization of PFAS in these water *** analyzed 31 samples from 9 sites in the HSC/GB that were collected over 5 months after the *** data showed that additional 19 PFAS were detected in surface water of HSC/GB,most of them decreased gradually after the *** features detected by LC-MS/MS correlated well in abundance with LC-IMS-MS data;however,LC-IMS-MS identified a number of additional PFAS,many known to be compo-nents of firefighting *** findings therefore illustrate that untargeted LC-IMS-MS improved our understanding of PFAS presence in complex environmental samples.

Mammograms are the mainstay of diagnostic breast imaging and cancer screening. Despite advances in technology such as Full Field Digital Mammography (FFDM) and Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT), these imaging techniques are purely structural, and are unable to overcome shortcomings in mammography posed by dense breast parenchyma. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the most sensitive modality in breast imaging, due to its functional aspects in addition to structural imaging with this modality. The use of MRI is however constrained by cost and availability. The utilization of intravenous contrast with mammograms introduces a functional element to imaging. This greatly improves the sensitivity of the examination, approaching sensitivity levels of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in the detection of primary breast cancer. With increased sensitivity afforded by assessment of tumor neo-vascularity, as well as its low cost, low energy imaging that is more readily available than MRI, Contrast-Enhanced Mammography (CEM) if more readily available than MRI, this imaging modality is a potential game

Theoretical analysis of PAM-N and M-QAM BER computation with single-sideband signal

In this paper, the theoretical bit error rate(BER) of N-level pulse amplitude modulation(PAMN)and M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation(M-QAM) have been studied and compared under different scenarios, including(i) PAM with intensity modulation with direct detection(IM/DD) and field modulation with detection(FMD)(including coherent detection and single-sideband modulation with direct detection(SSB-DD)), and(ii) QAM with coherent detection and SSB-DD. Considering the relationship between the symbol spacing and signal-to-noise ratio(SNR), we provide the mathematical BER equations, including the optical signal-to-noise ratio(OSNR) and carrier-to-signal power ratio(CSPR), especially for PAM *** verify the validity of our theoretical expressions for SSB systems, transmissions with 224-Gb/s SSBPAM4/16 QAM signals using the Kramers-Kronig(KK) receiver were implemented on a unified optical system platform. The simulation results agreed well with theoretical calculations both in back-to-back(BtB) and120-km transmission scenarios, which showed that the BER evaluation methods can serve as a theoretical guidance and system assessment criteria for SSB scenarios.

Lanthanide-doped upconversion nanocrystals(UCNCs)have recently become an attractive nonlinear fluorescence material for use in bioimaging because of their tunable spectral characteristics and exceptional *** materials are often introduced into the vicinity of UCNCs to increase their emission intensity by means of enlarging the absorption cross-section and accelerating the radiative decay ***,plasmonic nanostructures(e.g.,gold nanorods,GNRs)can also influence the polarization state of the UC fluorescence—an effect that is of fundamental importance for fluorescence polarization-based imaging methods yet has not been discussed *** study this effect,we synthesized GNR@SiO_(2)@CaF2:Yb^(3+),Er^(3+)hybrid core–shell–satellite nanostructures with precise control over the thickness of the SiO_(2) *** evaluated the shell thicknessdependent plasmonic enhancement of the emission intensity in ensemble and studied the plasmonic modulation of the emission polarization at the single-particle *** hybrid plasmonic UC nanostructures with an optimal shell thickness exhibit an improved bioimaging performance compared with bare UCNCs,and we observed a polarized nature of the light at both UC emission bands,which stems from the relationship between the excitation polarization and GNR *** used electrodynamic simulations combined with Förster resonance energy transfer theory to fully explain the observed *** results provide extensive insights into how the coherent interaction between the emission dipoles of UCNCs and the plasmonic dipoles of the GNR determines the emission polarization state in various situations and thus open the way to the accurate control of the UC emission anisotropy for a wide range of bioimaging and biosensing applications.
