Fertilizer phosphorus(P)is a finite resource,necessitating the development of innovative solutions for P fertilizer efficiency in agricultural ***-inositol hexakisphosphate(phytate)constitutes the majority of identified organic P in many soil types and is poorly available to *** phytase-producing biofertilizers into soil presents a viable and environmentally acceptable way of utilizing P from phytate,while reducing the need for mineral P application.A deeper understanding of the microbial ecology in relation to degradation of phytate under natural soil conditions is however needed to obtain successful biofertilizer candidates able to compete in complex soil *** we present the development of a microcosm for studying microbial communities able to colonize and utilize Ca-phytate hotspots in *** results provide evidence that the recruited microbial population mineralizes ***,quantification of bacterial genes associated with organic P cycling in alkaline soils indicated that the phosphatases PhoX and PhoD may play a larger role in phytate mineralization in soil than previously *** sequencing and BioLog®catabolism studies show that hotspots containing Ca-phytate,recruited a different set of microorganisms when compared to those containing an addition of C source alone,with the genus Streptomyces specifically *** propose that Streptomyces represents an hitherto unexplored resource as P biofertilizer with competitive advantage for utilizing CaPhy in an inherently competitive soil *** further conclude that the use of our newly designed microcosm presents an innovative approach for isolating soil microorganisms with the potential to degrade precipitated phytate in solum.

A range of plant species produce root exudates that inhibit ammonia-oxidizing *** biological nitrification inhibition(BNI)capacity can decrease N loss and increase N uptake from the *** study sought evidence for the existence and magnitude of BNI capacity in canola(Brassica napus).Seedlings of three canola cultivars,Brachiaria humidicola(BNI positive)and wheat(Triticum aestivum)were grown in a hydroponic *** exudates were collected and their inhibition of the ammonia oxidizing bacterium,Nitrosospira multiformis,was *** pot experiments were used to test the inhibition of native nitrifying communities in *** exudates from canola significantly reduced nitrification rates of both *** cultures and native soil microbial *** level of nitrification inhibition across the three cultivars was similar to the well-studied high-BNI species *** capacity of canola may have implications for the N dynamics in farming systems and the N uptake efficiency of crops in rotational farming *** reducing nitrification rates canola crops may decrease N losses,increase plant N uptake and encourage microbial N immobilization and subsequently increase the pool of organic N that is available for mineralization during the following cereal crops.

This paper examines the thermal performance of 20 different mortar mixes,which were prepared in order to study the behaviour of mortar incorporating Phase Change Materials(PCM).The PCM was used at a rate of 10,20 and 30%by weight of total solid *** fume was added to the mixes by 10,20,30 and 50%by weight of cement to enhance the mortar *** which incorporate phase-change materials(PCM)have the capability to help regulate the temperature inside buildings,contributing to the thermal comfort while decreasing the amount of mechanical heating and cooling energy required,therefore they have the potential to reduce building carbon *** mechanical characteristics and physical properties of the mortar with PCM were *** results show that mortar with Phase Change Materials up to PCM20%can be used with an optimal compressive *** fume(SF),up to a 20%SF addition,enhanced the mechanical properties of the mortar.

CRACK HeALING UTILISING BACTeRIAL SPOReS IN CONCReTe

This self repair system is based upon harmless ground borne bacteria as the self-healing *** bacteria are activated after the concrete is cracked and the bacterial spores are exposed to moisture and *** bacterial reproduction process creates a calcite by-product which fills the cracks in the *** sealing the cracks in concrete,an effective barrier to air or liquid borne deleterious materials are formed and as a consequence of this,enhanced durability is achieved in the structure,result-ing in lower life cycle *** concrete/mortar prisms were cracked and tested for water *** were then left for 56 days to heal and were subject to a test for water *** was observed and a reduced water flow(74%and 32%healed)measured with the healed samples when compared to the specimens that were cracked and subjected to a water flow test without any healing *** number of samples were limited and a larger scale test is recommended for further work;however,this is a proof of concept of the process of healing and testing.

If concrete is crack free,deleterious substances can be avoided entering the body of the material,that may corrode the rebar or encourage freeze/thaw *** paper examines a self healing system of cementitious *** induced calcite precipitation was used to heal cracks in concrete with calcite using bacillus bacteria in alkaline conditions to generate a calcite filling *** healing of cracked prisms was determined using a water flow and absorption test and the results were expressed to record the healing as a *** findings of the tests showed that a significant degree of self healing had taken place after 56 days after inducing a crack to the concrete prisms and the water flow test was appropriate to determine the degree of self healing taking *** of this process are such that the process requires a biological laboratory to create the spore impregnated *** the aggregate is prepared,the batching process is essentially the same as any normal concrete.A practical use of this system could be developed using cover panels of self healing material to act as permanent formwork,thus placing the healing ingredients where they are needed at a minimum *** system has huge potential for the creation of a self repairing sustainable infrastructure.

Integrated nano-structured silicon waveguides and devices for high-speed optical communications

With progress in fabrication technology, integrated photonics plays an increasingly important role in high-speed optical communications, from monolithic transmitters and receivers for advanced optical modulation formats to on-chip subsystems for optical signal processing. We review our recent work on the highly tailorable physical properties of silicon waveguides for communication and signal processing applications, using slot structures. Controllable chromatic dispersion, nonlinearity, and polarization properties of the waveguides are presented, and the enabled wideband wavelength conversion, optical tunable delay, and signal processing of polarization-multiplexing data channels are discussed.

Downscaling future climate scenarios to fine scales for hydrologic and ecological modeling and analysis

Introduction:evaluating the environmental impacts of climate change on water resources and biological components of the landscape is an integral part of hydrologic and ecological investigations,and the resultant land and resource management in the twenty-first *** of both climate and simulated hydrologic parameters on ecological processes are relevant at scales that reflect the heterogeneity and complexity of *** present,simulations of climate change available from global climate models[GCMs]require downscaling for hydrologic or ecological ***:Using statistically downscaled future climate projections developed using constructed analogues,a methodology was developed to further downscale the projections spatially using a gradient-inverse-distancesquared approach for application to hydrologic modeling at 270-m spatial ***:This paper illustrates a methodology to downscale and bias-correct national GCMs to subkilometer scales that are applicable to fine-scale environmental *** scenarios were chosen to bracket the range of future emissions put forth by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate ***-scale applications of downscaled datasets of ecological and hydrologic correlations to variation in climate are ***:The methodology,which includes a sequence of rigorous analyses and calculations,is intended to reduce the addition of uncertainty to the climate data as a result of the downscaling while providing the fine-scale climate information necessary for ecological *** results in new but consistent data sets for the US at 4 km,the southwest US at 270 m,and California at 90 m and illustrates the utility of fine-scale downscaling to analyses of ecological processes influenced by topographic complexity.

effective treatment of infection in chronic wounds is critical to improve patient outcomes and prevent severe complications,including systemic infections,increased morbidity,and *** treatments,including antibiotic administration and antimicrobial dressings,are challenged by the increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance and patients’sensitivity to the delivered *** studies have demonstrated the potential of a new antimicrobial agent,Gallium maltolate(GaM);however,the high burst release from the GaMloaded hydrogel gauze required frequent dressing *** address this need,we developed a hydrogel foambased wound dressing with GaM-loaded microspheres for sustained infection ***,the minimal inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations(MIC and MBC)of GaM against two Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from chronic wounds were *** significant adverse effects of GaM on dermal fibroblasts were shown at the MIC,indicating an acceptable selectivity *** the sustained release of GaM,electrospraying was employed to fabricate microspheres with different release *** investigation of loading and microsphere size on release kinetics indicated that the larger microsphere size and lower GaM loading resulted in a sustained GaM release profile over the target 5 *** of the GaM-loaded hydrogel dressing demonstrated cytocompatibility and antibacterial activities with a zone of inhibition *** equine distal limb wound model was developed and utilized to demonstrate the efficacy of GaM-loaded hydrogel foam in *** antimicrobial hydrogel foam dressing displayed the potential to combat methicillin-resistant ***(MRSA)infection with controlled GaM release to improve chronic wound healing.
