Natural contamination of human hands with enteric parasites in Indian Subcontinent

AIM: To investigate the prevalence of enteric parasite contamination on hands and the potential role naturally contaminated hands may have in their transmission. MeTHODS: Prior to initiating the survey, the protocol was reviewed and approved by respective Institutional Review Boards of each survey site(Dhaka, Bangladesh and Kolkata, India). Both stool and corresponding hand wash samples collected, were analyzed for the presence of enteric parasitic ova/(oo)cysts employing conventional microscopy coupled with permanent staining techniques. Additionally molecular approachessuch as polymerase chain reaction(PCR) of enteric parasites recovered from both stool and corresponding hand wash samples, were also used to further confirm their identity. ReSULTS: A total of 972 stool samples were collected from both sites surveyed(300 volunteers from Kolkata, India and 672 from Dhaka, Bangladesh). Parasitic analysis revealed, 113(38%) from Kolkata, India and 267(40%) of stool samples from Dhaka, Bangladesh were positive for parasitic ova/(oo)cysts. When the corresponding hand wash samples were analyzed, 43(14%) stool-positive volunteers in Kolkata, India and 47(7%) in Dhaka, Bangladesh were positive for enteric parasitic ova/(oo)cysts. Ascaris lumbricoides(A. lumbricoides) ova and Giardia lamblia(G. lamblia) cysts predominated in hands wash samples from both sites surveyed(from India, A. lumbricoides ova, 53%; G. lamblia cysts 31% and from Bangladesh, A. lumbricoides ova, 47%; G. lamblia cysts 19%). Genotypic analysis of enteric parasitic ova/(oo)cysts obtained from both stool and corresponding hand wash samples taken from the same person were found to be identical. CONCLUSION: These results suggest a possible role of hands contaminated with enteric parasites' ova/(oo)cysts in the transmission of these parasites highlighting another role of hand hygiene/proper hand washing in reducing the disease burden in low socioeconomic communities.

Handwriting is a unique and significant human feature that distinguishes them from one another.There are many researchers have endeavored to develop writing recognition systems utilizing specific signatures or symbols for person identification through verification.However,such systems are susceptible to forgery,posing security risks.In response to these challenges,we propose an innovative hybrid technique for individual identification based on independent handwriting,eliminating the reliance on specific signatures or symbols.In response to these challenges,we propose an innovative hybrid technique for individual identification based on independent handwriting,eliminating the reliance on specific signatures or symbols.Our innovative method is intricately designed,encompassing five distinct phases:data collection,preprocessing,feature extraction,significant feature selection,and classification.One key advancement lies in the creation of a novel dataset specifically tailored for Bengali handwriting(BHW),setting the foundation for our comprehensive approach.Post-preprocessing,we embarked on an exhaustive feature extraction process,encompassing integration with kinematic,statistical,spatial,and composite features.This meticulous amalgamation resulted in a robust set of 91 features.To enhance the efficiency of our system,we employed an analysis of variance(ANOVA)F test and mutual information scores approach,meticulously selecting the most pertinent features.In the identification phase,we harnessed the power of cutting-edge deep learning models,notably the Convolutional Neural Network(CNN)and Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory(BiLSTM).These models underwent rigorous training and testing to accurately discern individuals based on their handwriting characteristics.Moreover,our methodology introduces a groundbreaking hybrid model that synergizes CNN and BiLSTM,capitalizing on fine motor features for enhanced individual classifications.Crucially,our experimental results underscore the superiority of our approach.The CNN,B

The link between intracellular calcium signaling and exosomal PD-L1 in cancer progression and immunotherapy

exosomes are small membrane vesicles containing microRNA,RNA,DNA fragments,and proteins that are transferred from donor cells to recipient cells.Tumor cells release exo-somes to reprogram the factors associated with the tumor microenvironment(TMe)causing tu-mor metastasis and immune escape.emerging evidence revealed that cancer cell-derived exosomes carry immune inhibitory molecule program death ligand 1(PD-L1)that binds with re-ceptor program death protein 1(PD-1)and promote tumor progression by escaping immune response.Currently,some FDA-approved monoclonal antibodies are clinicallyused for cancer treatment by blocking PD-1/PD-L1 interaction.Despite notable treatment outcomes,some pa-tients show poor drug response.exosomal PD-L1 plays a vital role in lowering the treatment response,showing resistance to PD-1/PD-L1 blockage therapy through recapitulating the ef-fect of cell surface PD-L1.To enhance therapeutic response,inhibition of exosomal PD-L1 is required.Calcium signaling is the central regulator of tumorigenesis and can regulate exosome biogenesis and secretion by modulating Rab GTPase family and membrane fusion factors.Im-mune checkpoints are also connected with calcium signaling and calcium channel blockers like amlodipine,nifedipine,lercanidipine,diltiazem,and verapamil were also reported to suppress cellular PD-L1 expression.Therefore,to enhance the PD-1/PD-L1 blockage therapy response,the reduction of exosomal PD-L1 secretion from cancer cells is in our therapeutic consider-ation.In this review,we proposed a therapeutic strategy by targeting calcium signaling to inhibit the expression of PD-L1-containing exosome levels that could reduce the anti-PD-1/PD-L1 therapy resistance and increase the patient's drug response rate.

Unscented Kalman filter for a low-cost GNSS/IMU-based mobile mapping application under demanding conditions

For the last two decades,low-cost Global Navigation Satellite System(GNSS)receivers have been used in various applications.These receivers are mini-size,less expensive than geodetic-grade receivers,and in high demand.Irrespective of these outstanding features,low-cost GNSS receivers are potentially poorer hardwares with internal signal processing,resulting in lower quality.They typically come with low-cost GNSS antenna that has lower performance than their counterparts,particularly for multipath mitigation.Therefore,this research evaluated the low-cost GNSS device performance using a high-rate kinematic survey.For this purpose,these receivers were assembled with an Inertial Measurement Unit(IMU)sensor,which actively transmited data on acceleration and orientation rate during the observation.The position and navigation parameter data were obtained from the IMU readings,even without GNSS signals via the U-blox F9R GNSS/IMU device mounted on a vehicle.This research was conducted in an area with demanding conditions,such as an open sky area,an urban environment,and a shopping mall basement,to examine the device’s performance.The data were processed by two approaches:the Single Point Positioning-IMU(SPP/IMU)and the Differential GNSS-IMU(DGNSS/IMU).The Unscented Kalman Filter(UKF)was selected as a filtering algorithm due to its excellent performance in handling nonlinear system models.The result showed that integrating GNSS/IMU in SPP processing mode could increase the accuracy in eastward and northward components up to 68.28%and 66.64%.Integration of DGNSS/IMU increased the accuracy in eastward and northward components to 93.02%and 93.03%compared to the positioning of standalone GNSS.In addition,the positioning accuracy can be improved by reducing the IMU noise using low-pass and high-pass filters.This application could still not gain the expected position accuracy under signal outage conditions.

Neural network study of the nuclear ground-state spin distribution within a random interaction ensemble

The distribution of the nuclear ground-state spin in a two-body random ensemble(TBRe)was studied using a general classification neural network(NN)model with two-body interaction matrix elements as input features and the corresponding ground-state spins as labels or output predictions.The quantum many-body system problem exceeds the capability of our optimized NNs in terms of accurately predicting the ground-state spin of each sample within the TBRe.However,our NN model effectively captured the statistical properties of the ground-state spin because it learned the empirical regularity of the ground-state spin distribution in TBRe,as discovered by physicists.

effect of Fluidic Diode on Performance of Unidirectional Impulse Turbine

A pair of unidirectional turbines(UT)can operate in oscillatory airflow without additional units.However,this arrangement suffers from poor flow rectification.A fluidic diode(FD)offers variable hydrodynamic resistance based on the flow direction,and this can be coupled with UT to improve flow rectification.In this work,a numerical investigation on the effect of FD with UT is presented using the commercial fluid dynamics software ANSYS Fluent 16.1 with k-ωSST turbulence closure model.Periodic domains of UT and FD are numerically validated individually with experimental results.Later,both are coupled to obtain the combined effect,and these results are compared with the analytical approach.It was observed that coupling FD with UT improved the unit's performance at the lower flow coefficient(erformance decreased as the flow coefficient increased.Due to the diode's presence,fluid leaving the turbine experiences higher resistance at a higher flow coefficient,which decreases the overall performance of the combined unit.

Metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)possess a distinct advantage over conventional heterogeneous photocatalysts because of their carefully defined architecture and particular pores,which facilitate the targeted incorporation of other efficient cocatalysts or semiconductor materials.The integration of MOFs with other materials has resulted in significant breakthroughs,as the coupled materials improve the performance due to the combined effect.The unique MOF structures allow them to host foreign materials,which results in harvesting the visible region of the solar spectrum and effectively mitigating charge recombination by promoting charge separation.The review presents an evaluation of the latest developments in the utilization of surface and/or pore chemistry of MOF-supported heterojunctions for photocatalytic green-hydrogen generation with a basic understanding of the mechanism involved.The review begins with the basic principles of photocatalysis,the significance of MOFs,their optical properties,the methods used for synthesizing MOFs,and their coordination with other inorganic and polymeric materials.Furthermore,methods to increase photocatalytic H2 evolution using MOF-supported heterojunction have been proposed as standard practice.Lastly,to address environmental challenges,we highlight the future potential of MOF-supported heterojunctions for use in green-energy production.We hope that this review provides guidance to researchers in the development of effective heterojunctions based on MOFs to address challenges in energy applications and catalytic processes.

Comparison of vergence mechanisms between university students with good and poor sleep quality

AIM:To compare the vergence mechanisms between good and poor sleepers in university students.MeTHODS:A total of 64 university students were recruited in this study.The validated Malay version of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire(PSQI-M)was used to measure the participants’sleep quality over the past month.Participants were categorized as good sleepers(n=32)and poor sleepers(n=32)based on the PSQI-M scores.Heterophoria and fusional vergences were measured at distance and near.Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare heterophoria,negative fusional vergence(NFV),and positive fusional vergence(PFV)at distance and near between good and poor sleepers.Spearman correlation analysis was used to study the relationship between PSQI-M score and PFV at distance.ReSULTS:Both distance and near heterophorias were not significantly different between good and poor sleepers(P>0.05).There was a difference in distance PFV(Petween good and poor sleepers,but not in distance NFV,near NFV,and near PFV(P>0.05).Distance PFV was negatively correlated with PSQI-M score(rs=-0.33,Persity students with poor sleep quality demonstrates a reduced ability to maintain fusion with increasing convergence demand at distance.Sleep quality assessment during binocular vision examination in university students is recommended.

energy Harvesting in the Wake of An Inverted C-Shaped Bluff Body

This paper proposes a novel wake-induced vibration(WIV)-based energy harvesting system consisting of two bluff bodies.An inverted C-shaped bluff body is stationary installed at the upstream position to generate an interference wake street,and a cylinder bluff body equipped with a transducer is elastically suspended at the downstream position to harness WIV energy.The hydrodynamics and energy harvesting(eH)performance of the proposed system are investigated via experimental studies.The reduced velocity(U*)ranging from 2 to 14(the corresponding Reynolds number ranging from 15100 to 106200)is considered in the present study.It is found that the wake generated by the inverted C-shaped bluff body significantly affects the eH performance.enlarging the opening angle(α)of the C-shaped bluff body increases the vibration amplitude of the downstream cylinder,thereby increasing the harvested power.When the spacing(L)between two bluff bodies is two times the cylinder diameter(D),the wake-induced vibration(WIV)mode is observed,while the combined WIV and wake galloping(WG)mode occurs whenαis 150°,and L equals 3D or 4D.The average drag coefficient becomes negative when L is 2D,3D,or 4D.By carefully configuring a C-shaped bluff body,the wake generated by it can bring an augmenting effect on the vibration of the downstream eH cylinder.For example,the RMS power output of the proposed eH system reaches a maximum of 0.31 W at U*=8 and L=4D,which is 300%greater than that of its traditional counterpart.Furthermore,after a number of case stud-ies,it is identified that the proposed eH system can achieve the best performance whenαis 150°and L=2D.

Implications of electrode modifications in aqueous organic redox flow batteries

Aqueous organic redox flow batteries(RFBs) exhibit favorable characteristics, such as tunability, multielectron transfer capability, and stability of the redox active molecules utilized as anolytes and catholytes, making them very viable contenders for large-scale grid storage applications. Considerable attention has been paid on the development of efficient redox-active molecules and their performance optimization through chemical substitutions at various places on the backbone as part of the pursuit for high-performance RFBs. Despite the fact that electrodes are vital to optimal performance, they have not garnered significant attention. Limited research has been conducted on the effects of electrode modifications to improve the performance of RFBs. The primary emphasis has been given on the impact of electrode engineering to augment the efficiency of aqueous organic RFBs. An overview of electron transfer at the electrode–electrolyte interface is provided. The implications of electrode modification on the performance of redox flow batteries, with a particular focus on the anodic and cathodic half-cells separately, are then discussed. In each section, significant discrepancies surrounding the effects of electrode engineering are thoroughly examined and discussed. Finally, we have presented a comprehensive assessment along with our perspectives on the future trajectory.
