Long-term follow-up result of short metaphyseal femoral stem in primary total hip arthroplasty:A retrospective study

BACkGROUND Total hip arthroplasty(THA)has increased along with an increasing demand for improved quality of *** with prolonged life expectancy,the number of revision surgeries is expected to *** shielding is a significant issue with traditional femoral stems used in THA,making revision surgeries particularly challenging in younger *** has sparked renewed interest in studying safety and functional outcomes of short metaphyseal femoral stems,which have the potential to alleviate these challenges and simplify revision *** To evaluate the long-term outcomes of short-stem *** A total of 124 hips that underwent THA using the short femoral stem(TRILOCk®Depuy)between May 2006 and November 2008 were included in this *** were followed for a period of 15 *** were assessed in terms of pain relief,hip joint range of motion,improvement in mobility,and functional outcomes using the modified Harris Hip Score,Oxford hip score,and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis index *** A total of 124 hips in 98 patients were *** improvements in functional outcomes were observed over the 15-year follow-up period,with no cases of subsidence,implant loosening,or complications necessitating revision *** only complication reported was heterotopic ossification in 1 *** Short metaphyseal stems provide better functional outcomes with early mobilization,and its long-term follow-up without subsidence,implant loosening,or proximal femoral bone loss simplifies revision surgery in younger patients.

Influence of Cold Deformation on the Aging Behaviour of Al-Cu-Si-Mg Alloy

The present study deals with the effect of cold deformation and subsequent aging on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AI-Cu-Si-Mg alloy. Differential scanning calorimetry indicates that precipitation occurs in the temperature range of 258-272℃ for the as quenched wrought alloy. The activation energy value estimated by kissinger method for the aforesaid precipitation reaction is obtained as 106 kJ/mol. 45% cold deformation prior to aging indicates the first dissolution reaction at about 50℃ and the precipitation reaction at a temperature of about 82℃. Microstructural investigations have revealed the formation of fine precipitates within the matrix after aging of the cold deformed sample. As-quenched alloy reveals prominently the aging response, The increase in hardness, yield and tensile strength with simultaneous decrease in elongation in the deformed alloy is found to be primarily due to the deformation strengthening and not due to the precipitation hardening.

Improvement of warm formability of Al-Mg sheet alloys containing coarse second-phase particles

Several alloying elements involving Zr, Cu, Zn and Sc were added to Al-Mg sheet alloys in order to obtain an excellent combination of high strength and good high-temperature formability. Microstruc-tural examination showed that coarse intermetallic particles were formed in the microstructure and their amounts changed with variations of the alloying elements. During warm rolling of thermome-chanical treatments prior to warm deformation, the coarse particles initiated cracks, decreasing the warm formability. For healing the crack damage and further improving the warm formability, a process of hot isothermal press was developed and optimized to the sheet alloys. With this process, the biaxial stretch formability at 350℃ was improved by 22% for an aluminum alloy containing a large amount of coarse particles.

Minimum energy optimal external torque control of human binocular vision

In this paper,we consider eyes from the human binocular system,that simultaneously gaze on stationary point targets in space,while optimalal skipping from one target to the next,by rotaing their individual gaze *** head is assume fixed on the torso and the rotaing gaze direction of the two eyes are assumed restricted to pass through a point in the visual *** is further assumed that,individullly the rotations of the two eyes satisfy the well known Listing's *** formulate and study acombined optimal gaze rotation for the two eyes,by constructing a single Riemanmian metric,on the asociaced parameter *** goal is to optimally rotate so that the convergent gaze changes between two pre-specified target points in a finite time interval[0,1].The cost function we choose is the total energy,measured by the L2?norm,of the six extenal torques on the binocular *** torque functions are synthesized by solving an associated*two-point boundary value *** paper demonstrates,via simulation,the shape of the optimal gaze trajectory of the focused point of the bin-ocular *** Euclidean distance between the initial and the final point is compared to the arc:length of the optimal *** consumed *** computed for diferent eye movement chores and discussed in the *** simulation we observe that certain eye movement maneuvers are energy fficicnt and demonstrate that the optimal external torque is a linear function in *** also explore and conclude that spitting an arbitry opimal eye movement into optimal vergence and version components is not energy fficient although this is how the human oculomotor control seems to *** gaze tajectories and opimal extermal torque functions reported in this paper is new.

A Power Management Scheme for Grid-connected PV Integrated with Hybrid Energy Storage System

The penetration of renewable energy sources(RESs)in the distribution system becomes a challenge for the reliable and safe operation of the existing power *** sporadic characteristics of sustainable energy sources along with the random load variations greatly affect the power quality and stability of the ***,it requires storage systems with both high energy and high power handling capacity to coexist in *** efficient energy management structure is designed in this paper for a grid-connected PV system combined with hybrid storage of supercapacitor and *** combined supercapacitor and battery storage system grips the average and transient power changes,which provides a quick control for the DC-link voltage,i.e.,it stabilizes the system and helps achieve the PV power *** average power distribution between the power grid and battery is done by checking the state of charge(SOC)of a battery,and an effective and efficient energy management scheme is ***,the use of a supercapacitor lessens the current stress on the battery system during unexpected disparity in the generated power and load *** performance and efficacy of the proposed energy management scheme are justified by simulation studies.

Characterization and evolution of primary and secondary laterites in northwestern Bengal Basin, West Bengal, India

It is quite impossible to travel far in India without observing the remarkable fer- ruginous crust to which Buchanan in 1807 gave the name of laterite. In Indian peninsula, it is a post-Cretaceous stratigraphic succession with a polycyclic nature of evolution which marks the unconformity with recent Quaternary alluvium. There are perennial problems and research gaps in the investigation of laterites in India as well as in West Bengal：（1） defining, identify- ing and classifying latedtic materials, （2） mode of formation of laterite and its other horizons, （3） determining the ages of laterites, （4） reliability of laterites as palaeoclimatic indicators, （5） identifying topographic requirements and pedogeomorphic processes for laterite formation, and （6） reconstructions of former lateritized landscapes. The formation of north-south lateritic hard crust （Le. Rarh Bengal） on the Rajmahal Basalt Traps, Archean granite-gneiss, Gond- wana sediments, Paleogene gravels and older deltaic alluvium is analyzed here to resolve the aforesaid problems and to depict the variable characteristics of laterites with special reference to its tectono-climatic evolution in the northwestern marginal part of Bengal Basin. This paper reveals that the low-level secondary laterites （probably the Pliocene-Eady Pleistocene age） of Rarh Bengal are composed of heterogeneous Fe-AI rich gravelly materials which were derived from the high-level primary laterites （probably the Eocene-Miocene age） of plateau since the Paleogene Period by the peninsular river system, following the underlying structure of Bengal Basin. Alongside the roles of drifting of Indian Plate, establishment of monsoon climate, neo-tectonic uplifts and re-lateritization of ferruginous shelf deposits are determined here to unearth the palaeogenesis of primary and secondary laterites in West Bengal.
