Opencast coal mining produces trash of soil and rock containing various minerals,that are usually dumped nearby the abandoned sites which causes severe environmental concern including the production of acid mine drainage(AMD)through oxidation pyrite *** current study entailed assessing the potential production of AMD from an opencast coal mining region in Northeast part of *** order to have a comprehensive overview of the AMD problem in Makum coalfield,the physico-chemical,geochemical,and petrological characteristics of the coal and overburden(OB)samples collected from the Makum coalfield(Northeast India)were thoroughly *** maceral compositions reveal that coal features all three groups of macerals(liptinite,vitrinite,and inertinite),with a high concentration of liptinite indicating the coal of perhydrous,thereby rendering it more ***(Fes_(2))oxidation kinetics were studied by conducting the aqueous leaching experiments of coal and(OB)samples to interpret the chemical weathering under controlled laboratory conditions of various temperature and time periods,and to replicate the actual mine site *** coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy(ICP-OEs)was operated to detect the disposal of some precarious elements from coal and OB samples to the leachates during our controlled leaching *** Rare earth element(REE)enrichment in the samples shows the anthropogenic incorporation of the REE in the coal and *** experiments reveal the change in conductivity,acid producing tendency,total dissolved solid(TDs),total Iron(Fe)and dissolved sulfate(sO_(4)^(2−))ions on progress of the leaching ***,the discharge of Fes_(2) via atmospheric oxidation in laboratory condition undergoes a significant growth with the rise of temperature of the reaction systems in the environment and follows pseudo first order kinetics.A bio-remediative strategies is also reported in this paper to mitigate AMD water by

Composition, structure and diversity characterization of dry tropical forest of Chhattisgarh using satellite data

The purpose of this study was to characterize the land use, vegetation structure, and diversity in the Barnowpara sanctuary, Raipur district, Chhattisgarh, India through the use of satellite remote sensing and GIs. Land cover and vegetation were spatially analyzed by digitally classifying IRs 1D LIss III satellite data using a maximum likelihood algorithm. Later, the variations in structure and diversity in different forest types and classes were quantified by adopting quadratic sampling proce- dures. Nine land-cover types were delineated： teak forest, dense mixed forest, degraded mixed forest, sal mixed forest, open mixed forest, young teak plantation, grasslands, agriculture, habitation, and water bodies. The classification accuracy for different land-use classes ranged from 71.23% to 100%. The highest accuracy was observed in water bodies and grass- land, followed by habitation and agriculture, teak forest, degraded mixed forest, and dense mixed forest. The accuracy was lower in open mixed forest, and sal mixed forest. Results revealed that density of different forest types varied from 324 to 733 trees ha-l, basal area from 8.13 to 28.87 ***-1 and number of species from 20 to 40. similarly, the diversity ranged from 1.36 to 2.98, concentration of dominance from 0.06 to 0.49, species richness from 3.88 to 6.86, and beta diversity from 1.29 to 2.21. The sal mixed forest type recorded the highest basal area, diversity was highest in the dense mixed forest, and the teak forest recorded maximum density, which was poor in degraded mixed forests. The study also showed that Normalized Difference Vegetation Index （NDVI） was strongly cor- related to with the shannon Index and species richness.

Constraints in the development of contraceptives for men

Considerable efforts have been made to develop a male contraceptive and the studies have provided very useful infor-mation in this field. At least five different strategies to develop a male contraceptive have been pursued, namely: inhi-bition of sperm production, interference with sperm function, interruption of sperm transport, prevention of sperm de-position, and prevention of sperm-egg interaction. Of all these approaches, inhibition of sperm production by using an-drogens either alone or in combination with progestins have given the most encouraging results. A nmnber of clinicaltrials substantiate that it is indeed possible to have a reversible, effective and safe hormonal method of contraception. Apostmeiotic and epididymal approach to interfere with sperm function or the secretory and metabolic processes of theepididymis is another attractive option of male contraceptive development. A number of chemical compounds have beenidentified which interfere with sperm function in the epididymis without affecting sperm production, however, the com-pounds evaluated so far were found to be toxic. Interruption of sperm transport through the vas either by vasectomy orpercutaneous intmvasal injection of liquids which form cure-in-place plugs is also an attractive option. However, re-versibility of the methods is of concern in their wide scale use. The major constraint in developing a long-acting male contraceptive seems to be the need for greater investment forproduct development. The clinical trials for evaluating the efficacy and safety of the new products and formulationsstretch over several years and require enormous financial commitment. Nevertheless, the long-term gain of having along-acting reversible contraceptive for men is far greater than the financial commitments over few years. Lipid enhancement in microalgae by temporal phase separation:Use of indigenous sources of nutrients

Microalgae have been recommended as superior candidate for fuel production because of their advantages of higher photosynthetic efficiency, biomass & lipid productivity, and faster growth rate as compared to other energy crops. To meet up all these criteria, we have developed a continuous outdoor micro-algal raceway pond reactor(RPR) and a lab scale indoor tubular photo bioreactor(PBR) for biofuel production. An attempt to utilise indigenous sources of nutrients to improve the economics also revealed that micro-algal culturing can also be used as a mode of nutrient removal and water treatment. The photosynthetic rate and lipid production were enhanced by arresting daytime cell division and promoting night-time cell division. A 50% lipid improvement was observed for the particular algal consortia. Microscopic studies revealed that temporal phase separation could be achieved by adjusting nutrient distribution pattern. To monitor temporal phase separation, it is required to know DNA multiplication model. Quantification of g DNA in RPR confirmed that cell division happens during the night which positively affects the photosynthetic efficiency and lipid productivity of microalgae.

BACKGROUND:Choledochal cysts in adults are more commonly associated with complications such as cystolithiasis,recurrent cholangitis,portal hypertension and malignancy,than in the pediatric age ***:We report a case of adult choledochal cyst with long-term complication of large stone cast and portal hypertension due to secondary biliary ***:A 50-year-old patient presented with obstructive jaundice and *** investigation,she was diagnosed as having a choledochal cyst with large stone cast and portal *** stage resection of the choledochal cyst with Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy was done by meticulous dissection and ligation of ***:single stage resection of a choledochal cyst is possible in spite of associated portal hypertension,if the portal vein is patent.

DEM simulation of polydisperse systems of particles in a fluidized bed

Numerical simulations based on three-dimensional discrete element model （DEM） are conducted for mono-disperse, binary and ternary systems of particles in a fluidized bed. Fluid drag force acting on each particle depending on its size and relative velocity is assigned. The drag coefficient corresponding to Ergun＇s correlation is applied to the system of fluidized bed with particle size ratios of 1：1 for the mono-disperse system, 1：1.2, 1：1.4 and 1：2 for the binary system and 1：1.33：2 for the ternary system by keeping total volume and surface area of the particles constant. Results indicated that a reasonable estimation of drag force based on individual particle diameters as compared to that of the mean diameter of the particles is achieved in the fluid cells. The total translational kinetic energy of the particles is found to increase as the particle size ratio increases, suggesting an enhanced momentum transfer in polydisperse particle systems. systems with wide particle size distribution exhibited higher particle velocities around bubbles, resulting in faster bubble growth and its subsequent rise through the fluidized bed.

Effect of climate change on seasonal monsoon in Asia and its impact on the variability of monsoon rainfall in southeast Asia

Global warming and climate change is one of the most extensively researched and discussed topical issues affecting the *** there are enough historical evidence to support the theory that climate change is a natural phenomenon,many research scientists are widely in agreement that the increase in temperature in the 20 th century is anthropologically *** associated effects are the variability of rainfall and cyclonic patterns that are being observed *** southeast Asia the link between global warming and the seasonal atmospheric flow during the monsoon seasons shows varying degree of *** study investigates the impact of climate change on the seasonality of monsoon Asia and its effect on the variability of monsoon rainfall in southeast *** comparison of decadal variation of precipitation and temperature anomalies before the 1970 s found general increases which were mostly *** beyond the 1970 s,global precipitation anomalous showed increases that almost corresponded with increases in global temperature anomalies for the same *** are frequent changes and a shift westward of the Indian summer *** precipitation is observed to be 70%below normal levels,in some areas the topography affects the intensity of *** shifting phenomenon of other monsoon season in the region are impacting on the variability of rainfall and the onset of monsoons in southeast Asia and is predicted to delay for 15 days the onset of the monsoon in the *** variability of monsoon rainfall in the sEA region is observed to be decadal and the frequency and intensity of intermittent flooding of some areas during the monsoon season have serious consequences on the human,financial,infrastructure and food security of the region.
