Non-invasive imaging of pathological scars using a portable handheld two-photon microscope

Background:Pathological scars are a disorder that can lead to various cosmetic,psychological,and functional problems,and no effective assessment methods are currently available.Assessment and treatment of pathological scars are based on cutaneous manifestations.A two-photon microscope(TPM)with the potential for real-time non-invasive assessment may help determine the under-surface pathophysiological conditions in vivo.This study used a portable handheld TPM to image epidermal cells and dermal collagen structures in pathological scars and normal skin in vivo to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment in scar patients.Methods:Fifteen patients with pathological scars and three healthy controls were recruited.Imaging was performed using a portable handheld TPM.Five indexes were extracted from two dimensional(2D)and three dimensional(3D)perspectives,including collagen depth,dermo-epidermal junction(DEJ)contour ratio,thickness,orientation,and occupation(proportion of collagen fibers in the field of view)of collagen.Two depth-dependent indexes were computed through the 3D second harmonic generation image and three morphology-related indexes from the 2D images.We assessed index differences between scar and normal skin and changes before and after treatment.Results:Pathological scars and normal skin differed markedly regarding the epidermal morphological structure and the spectral characteristics of collagen fibers.Five indexes were employed to distinguish between normal skin and scar tissue.Statistically significant differences were found in average depth(t=9.917,P<0.001),thickness(t=4.037,P<0.001),occupation(t=2.169,P<0.050),orientation of collagen(t=3.669,P<0.001),and the DEJ contour ratio(t=5.105,P<0.001).Conclusions:Use of portable handheld TPM can distinguish collagen from skin tissues;thus,it is more suitable for scar imaging than reflectance confocal microscopy.Thus,a TPM may be an auxiliary tool for scar treatment selection and assessing treatment efficacy.

Dear Editor,The existing control schemes for microgrids (MGs) face challenges in effectively addressing plugging in/out operations under uncertain power lines and faults. To tackle this issue, this letter proposes a novel scalable fault-tolerant control (FTC) strategy for DC MGs. By developing a structured Lyapunov matrix (SLM), a decoupled FTC method is introduced to mitigate the adverse effects of uncertain lines and nonuniform faults.

Robust, breathable, and chemical-resistant polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) films achieved by novel in-situ fibrillation strategy for highperformance triboelectric nanogenerators

In the era of advanced wearable electronic devices,the triboelectric nanogenerators(TENGs)as energy harvesting and self-powered sensing units hold great promise.Selecting appropriate triboelectric material is the crucial factor to optimize the performance of TENG,while polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE)stands out as a highly versatile option among the various materials.In this study,we present an ultrafine nanofibrous PTFE(NF-PTFE)films prepared by novel in-situ fibrillation strategy as the triboelectric material in TENG devices.The innovative processing methodology facilely addresses the dilemma between high porosity and fine pore size of traditional porous PTFE films,meanwhile achieves exceptional mechanical strength,hydrophobicity,air permeability,and chemical resistance of the films.With the integration of nanofibrous PTFE films into contact-separation mode TENG and droplet-based TENG,these devices realize the peak electrical output of 131 V/10.8μA and 54 V/14μA with great durability,which surpass the performance of TENGs using traditional expanded PTFE films.Furthermore,a smart glove capable of recognizing hand gestures is proposed,which demonstrates the versatility,flexibility,and practicality of this material for potential use in smart devices.This reported NF-PTFE film provides insights for the design of high-performance TENG device for advanced wearable electrical applications.

Metabolic diseases and their complications impose health and economic burdens worldwide.Evidence from past experimental studies and clinical trials suggests our body may have the ability to remember the past metabolic environment,such as hyperglycemia or hyperlipidemia,thus leading to chronic inflammatory disorders and other diseases even after the elimination of these metabolic environments.The long-term effects of that aberrant metabolism on the body have been summarized as metabolic memory and are found to assume a crucial role in states of health and disease.Multiple molecular mechanisms collectively participate in metabolic memory management,resulting in different cellular alterations as well as tissue and organ dysfunctions,culminating in disease progression and even affecting offspring.The elucidation and expansion of the concept of metabolic memory provides more comprehensive insight into pathogenic mechanisms underlying metabolic diseases and complications and promises to be a new target in disease detection and management.Here,we retrace the history of relevant research on metabolic memory and summarize its salient characteristics.We provide a detailed discussion of the mechanisms by which metabolic memory may be involved in disease development at molecular,cellular,and organ levels,with emphasis on the impact of epigenetic modulations.Finally,we present some of the pivotal findings arguing in favor of targeting metabolic memory to develop therapeutic strategies for metabolic diseases and provide the latest reflections on the consequences of metabolic memory as well as their implications for human health and diseases.

Establishment of a three-dimensional particle library for graded crushed stone based on a new aggregate morphology characterization method

The morphology of graded crushed stone(GCS)particles has an essential influence on the performance of aggregate mixtures.The impact of particle shape is a comprehensive effect that cannot be considered separately,leading to difficulties in establishing the relationship between the mixture properties and the aggregate morphology by using laboratory methods.The discrete element method(DEM)is an effective way widely adopted to reconstruct the morphology of particles and simulate performance tests of granular materials.However,selecting limited particles characterizing a real particle-assembly for simulation is still a challenge in current research due to the inherent rich variability of particle shapes.In this study,based on the acquisition of three-dimensional(3D)aggregate shapes by using laser scanning,ellipsoid index(EDI)translating the particle shape as a function of surface area,volume,and contour length is proposed to comprehensively evaluate aggregate morphology.Further,a particle library capable of characterizing aggregate morphology distribution is established based on the statistics of the corresponding morphological characteristics of particle samples.The model reliability is validated by carrying out a series of experimental and numerical penetration tests with nine different gradations.The established particle library can be used to model aggregate mixtures and the proposed simulation framework is promising for optimizing the mixture gradation design numerically.

Suppress oxygen evolution of lithium-rich manganese-based cathode materials via an integrated strategy

Improving the reversibility of anionic redox and inhibiting irreversible oxygen evolution are the main challenges in the application of high reversible capacity Li-rich Mn-based cathode materials.A facile synchronous lithiation strategy combining the advantages of yttrium doping and LiYO_(2) surface coating is proposed.Yttrium doping effectively suppresses the oxygen evolution during the delithiation process by increasing the energy barrier of oxygen evolution reaction through strong Y–O bond energy.LiYO_(2) nanocoating has the function of structural constraint and protection,that protecting the lattice oxygen exposed to the surface,thus avoiding irreversible oxidation.As an Li^(+) conductor,LiYO_(2) nano-coating can provide a fast Li^(+) transfer channel,which enables the sample to have excellent rate performance.The synergistic effect of Y doping and nano-LiYO_(2) coating integration suppresses the oxygen release from the surface,accelerates the diffusion of Li^(+)from electrolyte to electrode and decreases the interfacial side reactions,enabling the lithium ion batteries to obtain good electrochemical performance.The lithium-ion full cell employing the Y-1 sample(cathode)and commercial graphite(anode)exhibit an excellent specific energy density of 442.9 Wh kg^(-1) at a current density of 0.1C,with very stable safety performance,which can be used in a wide temperature range(60 to-15℃)stable operation.This result illustrates a new integration strategy for advanced cathode materials to achieve high specific energy density.

Microscopic Analysis of Cementitious Sand and Gravel Damming Materia

The mechanical properties of cementitious sand and gravel damming material have been experimentally determined by means of microscopic SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy)image analysis.The results show that the combination of fly ash and water can fill the voids in cemented sand and gravel test blocks because of the presence of hydrated calcium silicate and other substances;thereby,the compactness and mechanical properties of these materials can be greatly improved.For every 10 kg/m^(3) increase in the amount of cementitious material,the density increases by about 2%,and the water content decreases by 0.2%.The amount of cementitious material used in the sand and gravel in these tests was 80-110 kg/m^(3),the water-binder ratio was 1-1.50.Moreover,the splitting tensile strength was 1/10 of the compressive strength,and the maximum strength was 7.42 MPa at 90 d.The optimal mix ratio has been found to be 50 kg of cement,60 kg of fly ash and 120 kg of water(C50F60W120).The related dry density was 2.6 g/cm^(3),the water content was 6%,and the water-binder ratio was 1.09.

Enhancing SAEAs with unevaluated solutions:a case study of relation model for expensive optimization

Surrogate-assisted evolutionary algorithms(SAEAs) hold significant importance in resolving expensive optimization problems. Extensive efforts have been devoted to improving the efficiency of SAEAs through the development of proficient model-assisted solution selection methods, which, however, first requires generating high-quality solutions. The fundamental paradigm of evaluating a limited number of solutions in each generation within SAEAs reduces the variance of adjacent populations, thereby affecting the quality of offspring solutions. This is a frequently encountered issue yet receives little attention. To address the issue, this paper presents a framework using unevaluated solutions to enhance the efficiency of SAEAs.The surrogate model is employed to identify high-quality solutions for the direct generation of new solutions without evaluation. To ensure dependable selection, we have introduced two tailored relation models to select the optimal solution and the unevaluated population. A comprehensive experimental analysis is performed on two test suites, which showcases the superiority of the relation model over regression and classification models in the solution selection phase. Furthermore, the surrogate-selected unevaluated solutions with high potential have been shown to enhance the efficiency of the algorithm significantly.

Dynamic ocean inverse modeling based on differentiable rendering

Learning and inferring underlying motion patterns of captured 2D scenes and then re-creating dynamic evolution consistent with the real-world natural phenomena have high appeal for graphics and animation.To bridge the technical gap between virtual and real environments,we focus on the inverse modeling and reconstruction of visually consistent and property-verifiable oceans,taking advantage of deep learning and differentiable physics to learn geometry and constitute waves in a self-supervised manner.First,we infer hierarchical geometry using two networks,which are optimized via the differentiable renderer.We extract wave components from the sequence of inferred geometry through a network equipped with a differentiable ocean model.Then,ocean dynamics can be evolved using the reconstructed wave components.Through extensive experiments,we verify that our new method yields satisfactory results for both geometry reconstruction and wave estimation.Moreover,the new framework has the inverse modeling potential to facilitate a host of graphics applications,such as the rapid production of physically accurate scene animation and editing guided by real ocean scenes.

Prediction of medium-to-coal ratio effect in a dense medium cyclone by using both traditional and coarse-grained CFD-DEM models

Dense medium cyclone(DMC)is the working horse in coal industry.In practice,it is usually operated under constant pressure and the operational conditions(mainly medium-to-coal(M:C)ratio and oper-ational pressure)need to be adjusted according to coal washability data(mainly coal particle size and density distributions).Nonetheless,until now it is still not well understood how the M:C ratio would affect the performance of DMCs especially under the practical conditions.In this work,the effect of M:C ratio is for the first time numerically studied under conditions similar to plant operation by using both tra-ditional and coarse-grained(CG)combined approach of computational fluid dynamics(CFD)and discrete element method(DEM),called as traditional CFD-DEM and CG CFD-DEM,in which the flow of coal par-ticles is modelled by DEM or CG DEM which applies Newton's laws of motion to individual particles and that of medium flow by the conventional CFD which solves the local-averaged Navier-Stokes equations,allowing consideration of particle-fluid mutual interaction and particle-particle collisions.Moreover,impulse and momentum connection law is used to achieve energy conservation between traditional CFD-DEM and CG CFD-DEM.It is found that under constant pressure,the M:C ratio affects DMC perfor-mance significantly.The specific effect depends on coal washability or coal type.Under extremely low M:C ratio,the phenomenon that high-quality coal product is misplaced to reject is successfully repro-duced,which has been observed in plants in Australian coal industry and called as"low-density tail".Moreover,strategies are proposed to mitigate the"low-density tail"phenomenon based on the model.
