Transmission characteristics of EM wave in a finite thickness plasma

One of the key factors for solving the problems of re-entry communication interruption is electromagnetic（EM） wave transmission characteristics in a plasma.Theoretical and experimental studies were carried out on specific transmission characteristics for different plasma sheath characteristic under thin sheath condition in re-entry state.The paper presents systematic studies on the variations of wave attenuation characteristics versus plasma sheath thickness L,collision frequency ν,electron density n e and wave working frequency f in a φ 800 mm high temperature shock tube.In experiments,L is set to 4 cm and 38 cm.ν is 2 GHz and 15 GHz.n e is from 1×10 10 cm（-3） to 1×10 13 cm（-3）,and f is set to 2,5,10,14.6 GHz,respectively.Meanwhile,Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin（WKB） and finite-difference time-domain（FDTD） methods are adopted to carry out theoretical simulation for comparison with experimental results.It is found that when L is much larger than EM wavelength λ（thick sheath） and ν is large,the theoretical result is in good agreement with experimental one,when sheath thickness L is much larger than λ,while ν is relatively small,two theoretical results are obviously different from the experimental ones.It means that the existing theoretical model can not fully describe the contribution of ν.Furthermore,when L and λ are of the same order of magnitude（thin sheath）,the experimental result is much smaller than the theoretical values,which indicates that the current model can not properly describe the thin sheath effect on EM attenuation characteristics.

Impact of transgenic Bacillus thuringiensis cotton on a non-target pest Tetranychus spp. in northern China

Field studies were carried out to evaluate the effect of two transgenic cotton varieties （SGK321 carrying CryIA ＋ CpTI and DP99B carrying CryIAc） and the conventional variety （shiyuan321-parental line of SGK321） on spider mites, Tetranychus spp. from 2002 to 2004. In 2002, this experiment included three treatments： Bt cotton field （SGK321） treated with acaricides against spider mites, untreated non-Bt cotton field （Shiyuan321）, and untreated Bt cotton field （SGK321）. In 2003-2004, there are four types of treatments after a new transgenic Bt cotton variety, DP99B （non-chemical control）, was added into the experiments. The results showed that there were no significant difference in densities of spider mites among Bt without acaricides and non-Bt without acaricides cotton fields, nor was there a significant difference in damage of spider mites to cotton among these treatments （P 〉 0.1）. However, there are significant differences （P 〈 0.05） in densities of spider mites and damage caused by spider mites between cotton fields with and without acaricides. Acaricide significantly reduced the densities of spider mites in Bt cotton （P 〈 0.05）. These results suggest that Bt cotton has no effect on spider mites populations. However, spider mites have the potential for severe damage in Bt cotton fields. Acaricides are essential tools in controlling cotton spider mites in northern China.

Magnolol attenuates sepsis-induced gastrointestinal dysmotility in rats by modulating inflammatory mediators

aiM: To investigate the protective effects of magnolol on sepsis-induced inflammation and intestinal dysmotility. METHODS: Sepsis was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups: magnolol prior to LPS injection (LPS/Mag group); vehicle prior to LPS injection (LPS/Veh group); vehicle prior to injection of saline (Control/Veh). Intestinal transit and circular muscle mechanical activity were assessed 12 h after LPS injection. Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-10 (IL-10), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) mRNA in rat ileum were studied by RT-PCR 2 h after LPS injection. Nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) activity in the intestine was also investigated at this time using electrophoretic mobility shift assay. In addition, antioxidant activity was determined by measuring malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in the intestine 2 h after LPS injection. RESULTS: Magnolol significantly increased intestinal transit and circular muscle mechanical activity in LPS- treated animals. TNF-α, MCP-1 and iNOS mRNA expression in the small intestine were significantly reduced after magnolol treatment in LPS-induced septic animals, compared with untreated septic animals. Additionally,magnolol significantly increased IL-10 mRNA expression in septic rat ileum. Magnolol also significantly suppressed NF-κB activity in septic rat intestine. In addition, magnolol significantly decreased MDA concentration and increased SOD activity in rat ileum. CONCLUSION: Magnolol prevents sepsis-induced suppression of intestinal motility in rats. The potential mechanism of this benefit of magnolol appears to be modulation of self-amplified inflammatory events and block of oxidative stress in the intestine.

Comparison of effects of obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease on incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus

aiM: To compare and analyze the effects of obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) on the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) in Chinese subjects.METHODS: In 2008, a population of 4847 subjects was randomly sampled from 17 medical units for enrollment in this cohort study. Baseline information was obtained via a questionnaire on general information, physical examination(height, weight, and blood pressure), laboratory tests(triglycerides, total cholesterol, fasting blood glucose, alanine aminotransferase(ALT), uric acid, and creatinine), B-mode ultrasound, and ECG screening. The incidence of T2 DM after four years of follow-up was calculated. Numeric variable data was tested for normality, with the data expressed as mean ± SD. Kaplan-Meier analysis was performed to calculate the cumulative incidence. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to analyze the relative risk(RR) of different body mass index(BMI) levels and NAFLD on T2 DM, as well as analyzingthe RR adjusted for age, sex, blood pressure, lipids, transaminases, uric acid, and creatinine.RESULTS: A total of 4736(97.71%) subjects completed 4-year follow-up, with a median follow-up time of 3.85 years, totaling 17223 person-years. 380 subjects were diagnosed with T2 DM, with a cumulative incidence of 8.0%. The cumulative incidence of T2 DM in the NAFLD and control groups was 17.4% vs 4.1%(P < 0.001), respectively, while the incidence in overweight and obese subjects was 11.0% vs 15.8%(P < 0.001), respectively. The incidence of T2 DM increased with an increase in baseline BMI. Cox regression analysis showed that the risk of T2 DM in the NAFLD group(RR = 4.492, 95%CI: 3.640-5.542) after adjustment for age, sex, blood pressure, lipids, ALT, uric acid, and creatinine was 3.367(2.367-4.266), whi le t he value(RR, 95%CI) in overweight and obese subjects after adjustment for age, sex, BMI, blood pressure, lipids and other factors was 1.274(0.997-1.629) and 1.554(1.140-2.091), respectively. Cytochrome P450 1A（CYP1A） is one of the most significant phase I drug-metabolizing enzymes in humans, which plays an important role on the metabolic activation of procarcinogenic compounds to their ultimate carcinogens. Developing efficient methods for rapid detection and real-time monitoring of CYP1 A enzyme activity is considerable significance. Toward this goal, we have firstly designed a 1,8-naphthalimide-based TP fluorescent chromophore NCMN-2（referred synthesized NCMN-1[1]） with large two-photon absorption（TPA） cross section（5190 GM） and separate fluorescence signal before and after recognizing CYP1 A enzyme according to theoretical means.Docking analysis suggested that the designed two-photon probe still could guarantee and achieve the excellent selectivity for CYP1 A enzyme.

A model reduction approach for discrete-time linear time-variant systems with delayed inputs

A model reduction approach is presented for discrete-time linear time-variant input-delayed systems. According to this proposed approach, a dynamical variable is constructed by taking advantage of the current state and historical information of input. It is revealed that the behavior of this dynamical variable is governed by a discrete-time linear delay-free system. It is worth noting that the presented variable transformation does not require the system matrix to be invertible. Based on the reduced delay-free models,stabilizing control laws can be easily obtained for the original delayed system. For the case with a single input delay, the constructed variable is an exact prediction for the future state, and thus the stabilizing control law could be designed by replacing the future state with its prediction. Finally, three discrete-time periodic systems with delayed input are employed to illustrate how to utilize the presented model reduction approaches.

Stem cell therapy holds immense potential as a viable treatment for a widespread range of intractable disorders.As the safety of stem cell transplantation having been demonstrated in numerous clinical trials,various kinds of stem cells are currently utilized in medical applications.Despite the achievements,the therapeutic benefits of stem cells for diseases are limited,and the data of clinical researches are unstable.To optimize tthe effectiveness of stem cells,engineering approaches have been developed to enhance their inherent abilities and impart them with new functionalities,paving the way for the next generation of stem cell therapies.This review offers a detailed analysis of engineered stem cells,including their clinical applications and potential for future development.We begin by briefly introducing the recent advances in the production of stem cells(induced pluripotent stem cells(ipsCs),embryonic stem cells(ESCs),mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)and hematopoietic stem cells(HSCs).Furthermore,we present the latest developments of engineered strategies in stem cells,including engineered methods in molecular biology and biomaterial fields,and their application in biomedical research.Finally,we summarize the current obstacles and suggest future prospects for engineered stem cells in clinical translations and biomedical applications.

We herein report a theoretical analysis using DFT and TDDFT to study the electronic structures and photophysical properties of mixed-ligand Cu（Ι）complexes.To investigate the reason:1)why with the POP（POP=bis[2-（diphenylphosphino）phenyl]ether）ligand can be a strong phosphorescent emitter,while a pair of PPh3（PPh3=triphenylphosphine）ligands is only weakly triplet emissive?2)why[Cu（dmp）（POP）]+and[Cu（dbp）（POP）]+complexes can be better emitter with high quantum efficiency than others?The HOMO,LUMO,△H-L,ES1,IPs,EAs andλwere computed.And through the study of the geometric relaxations and SOC at their optimized the S0 and T1 geometries,the knr and kr were determined,for comparing and analyzing the different substituents effect on the luminescence quantum yield.Considering these factors,the study indicates that the ether linkage made the system POP as stronger emitter than that of system PPh3.The transport equilibrium property for dmp and dbp in system POP was markedly improved by the bulky substituents on R.A thorough understanding of the effect of the coordinating ligand on the photophysical behavior of a transition metal complex is desirable for rational syntheses of highly phosphorescent materials.

Successful treatment of Purpureocillium lilacinum pulmonary infection with isavuconazole: A case report

BACKGROUND Purpureocillium lilacinum(P.lilacinum)is a saprophytic fungus widespread in soil and vegetation.As a causative agent,it is very rarely detected in humans,most commonly in the skin.CASE SUMMARY In this article,we reported the case of a 72-year-old patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia who was admitted with cough and fever.Computed tomography revealed an infection in the right lower lobe.Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid culture and metagenomic next-generation sequencing were ultimately confirmed to have a pulmonary infection with P.lilacinum.She was eventually discharged with good outcomes after treatment with isavuconazole.CONCLUSION Pulmonary infection with P.lilacinum was exceedingly rare.While currently there are no definitive therapeutic agents,there are reports of high resistance to amphotericin B and fluconazole and good sensitivity to second-generation triazoles.The present report is the first known use of isavuconazole for pulmonary P.lilacinum infection.It provides new evidence for the characterization and treatment of clinical P.lilacinum lung infections.
