Prediction of the undrained shear strength of remolded soil with non-linear regression,fuzzy logic,and artificial neural network

This study aims to predict the undrained shear strength of remolded soil samples using non-linear regression analyses,fuzzy logic,and artificial neural network modeling.A total of 1306 undrained shear strength results from 230 different remolded soil test settings reported in 21 publications were collected,utilizing six different measurement *** water content,plastic limit,and liquid limit were used as input parameters for fuzzy logic and artificial neural network modeling,liquidity index or water content ratio was considered as an input parameter for non-linear regression *** non-linear regression analyses,12 different regression equations were derived for the prediction of undrained shear strength of remolded ***-Forward backpropagation and the TANSIg transfer function were used for artificial neural network modeling,while the Mamdani inference system was preferred with trapezoidal and triangular membership functions for fuzzy logic *** experimental results of 914 tests were used for training of the artificial neural network models,196 for validation and 196 for *** was observed that the accuracy of the artificial neural network and fuzzy logic modeling was higher than that of the non-linear regression ***,a simple and reliable regression equation was proposed for assessments of undrained shear strength values with higher coefficients of determination.

How has the COVID-19 pandemic changed treatment preferences of patients with proximal ureteral stones?

Background:The impact of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic on patient decision making remains *** study aimed to investigate the effect of the pandemic on treatment preferences of patients with proximal ureteral stones.Materials and methods:Retrospective data regarding treatment preferences of patients diagnosed with symptomatic proximal ure-teral stones between July 2018 and November 2021 at a single center were *** from 493 patients were analyzed according to 2 groups,including patients diagnosed during the COVID-19 pandemic and those diagnosed during an equivalent period of time be-fore the pandemic.Results:Preference for conservative treatment increased during the COVID-19 pandemic(p=0.009).In patients who had previously undergone shock wave lithotripsy(SWL),the preference for SWL decreased and the preference for conservative treatment increased during the COVID-19 pandemic(p=0.042).Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed a significant correlation between a preference for conservative treatment during the pandemic and no prior spontaneous stone passage(p=0.003;odds ratio[OR],2.48;95％con-fidence interval[CI],1.45-4.23),no hydronephrosis(p=0.035;OR,3.57;95％Cl,1.34-9.49),and a visual analog scale score of 4 or less(p=0.018;OR,1.97;95％Cl,1.15-3.38).Conclusions:A significant increase in the preference for conservative treatment was observed among patients diagnosed during the pandemic,and patients with a history of SWL demonstrated a preference shift from SWL to conservative treatment.

Antibiotic ciprofloxacin removal from aqueous solutions by electrochemically activated persulfate process:Optimization,degradation pathways,and toxicology assessment

Ciprofloxacin(CIP)is a commonly used antibiotic in the fluoroquinolone group and is widely used in medical and veterinary medicine disciplines to treat bacterial *** CIP is discharged into the sewage system,it cannot be removed by a conventional wastewater treatment plant because of its recalcitrant *** this study,boron-doped diamond anode and persulfate were used to degrade CIP in an aquatic solution by creating an electrochemically activated persulfate(EAP)*** added to the system as a coactivator and the process was called EAP+*** effects of independent variables,including pH,Fe^(2+),persulfate concentration,and electrolysis time on the systemwere optimized using the response surface *** results showed that the EAP+Fe process removed 94%of CIP under the following optimum conditions:A pH of 3,persulfate/Fe^(2+)concentration of 0.4 mmol/L,initial CIP concentration 30 mg/L,and electrolysis time of 12.64 *** removal efficiency was increased from 65.10%to 94.35%by adding Fe^(2+)as a transition *** degradation products,7 pathways,and 78 intermediates of CIP were studied,and three of those intermediates(m/z 298,498,and 505)were *** toxicological analysis based on toxicity estimation software results indicated that some degradation products of CIP were toxic to targeted animals,including fathead minnow,Daphnia magna,Tetrahymena pyriformis,and *** optimumoperation costswere similar in EAP and EAP+Fe processes,approximately 0.54€/m^(3).

Secondary endoresection for previously treated choroidal melanomas with a non-responsive course and persistent exudative retinal detachment

AIM:To evaluate the results and complications of secondary endoresection via pars plana vitrectomy for choroidal melanoma and review the previously reported endoresection studies on the treatment of choroidal ***:The medical records of 6 patients with choroidal melanoma who underwent secondary endoresection between March 2012 and March 2020 were retrospectively *** indications for secondary endoresection were progressive or recurrent tumor and severe exudative retinal detachment after previous treatment with plaque radiotherapy/Cyberknife radiosurgery/transpupillary thermotherapy(TTT).RESULTS:Before endoresection,2 eyes had Iodine-125 plaque radiotherapy and TTT,1 eye had Ruthenium-106 plaque radiotherapy and TTT,1 eye had Cyberknife radiosurgery and TTT,1 eye had Cyberknife radiosurgery,and 1 eye had TTT *** visual acuity ranged from 20/63 to 20/1600(Snellen) and from 0.5 to 1.9(mean:1.1) on the log MAR *** mean tumor base diameters were 9.5×8.7 mm and the mean tumor thickness was 5.4 *** secondary endoresection,transient vitreous hemorrhage developed in 2(33.3%) eyes and retinal detachment in 1(16.7%) *** examination revealed epithelioid cell melanoma in 4(66.7%) eyes and mixed cell melanoma in 1(16.7%).Melanoma cell type was not specified in 1(16.7%) *** a mean follow-up of 49.6 mo(range:16-90 mo),mean visual acuity did not improve and 1 eye was enucleated due to tumor *** visual acuity ranged from 20/63 to 20/1600(Snellen) and from 0.5 to 1.9(mean:1.2) on the log MAR *** patients with choroidal melanoma developed metastasis and eventually ***:Secondary endoresection seems to be an effective treatment option for globe salvage in choroidal melanoma not responsive to conventional treatment and displaying persistent exudative retinal *** was no visual acuity increase among the treated eyes but globe salvage was possible in most cases in this study.

Demographic features and histopathological diagnosis in primary eyelid tumors: results over 19 years from a tertiary center in Ankara, Turkey

AIM:To evaluate the demographic features,location,and histopathologic results in primary eyelid ***:We retrospectively reviewed the records of patients with primary eyelid tumor diagnosed and treated between November 1997 and June 2016 on our ***:Nine hundred and eleven lesions from 874 patients were included in this *** hundred and fortysix(51.0%)of the patients were females and 428(49.0%)were *** mean age was 51.0y(range:3 mo-94 y).The lesions were located in the upper eyelid(418 cases,45.9%),lower eyelid(378 cases,41.5%),medial canthus(89 cases,9.8%),and lateral canthus(26 cases,2.8%).Four hundred and seventy(51.6%)lesions were located on the right side and 441(48.4%)on the *** the eyelid lesions,666(73.1%)were benign,230(25.2%)malignant,and 15(1.6%)*** the eyelid tumors were classified according to their tissue or cell of origin,527(57.8%)of the lesions were found to be epidermal,171(18.8%)adnexal,131(14.4%)inflammatory and infectious,and 65(7.1%)*** most common benign lesions were squamous cell papilloma(139 lesions,15.2%),intradermal nevus(97 lesions,10.6%),epidermoid inclusion cysts(78 lesions,8.6%),seborrheic keratosis(60 lesions,6.6%),and inflammatory masses(59 lesions,6.5%).Basal cell carcinoma was the most common malignant tumor(191 lesions,21.0%)followed by squamous cell carcinoma(16 lesions,1.8%),sebaceous carcinoma(14 lesions,1.5%),and malignant melanoma(5 lesions,0.5%).CONCLUSION:In this study,73.1%of eyelid lesions are benign and the remaining 26.9%are premalignant and *** cell carcinoma is the most common tumor among all histopathological diagnosis followed by squamous papilloma.

Depth perception differences between hemispheres,genders,and eye dominance A study on evoked potential

BACKgROUnd： Certain neural functions, such as peripheral reflexes, differ between genders, while higher brain functions, such as language, are asymmetrically distributed between the two hemispheres. The question remains as to whether depth perception differs between hemispheric laterality and genders, and whether it is affected by eye dominance. OBJECTIVE： To determine whether depth perception is influenced by factors such as gender, eye dominance, and hemispheric lateralization by recording evoked potential associated with depth perception. DESIgN, TIME And SETTINg： A contrast observation based on neuroelectrophysiology was performed at the Department of Biophysics of Ege University Medical School between June 2006 and April 2007. PARTICIPANTS： A total of 34 subjects, 19 females and 15 males, were included in the study with a mean age of （31.0 ± 6.9） years. All subjects were free of neurological or psychological disorders, or problems such as strabismus or vision correction. METHODS： Random-dot stereograms were used to elicit brain activity. A specially designed signal acquisition system employing two computers was used to record evoked potentials from both hemispheres via two pairs of scalp electrodes placed over the occipitotemporal areas of both hemispheres at symmetrical locations. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Negative potential with a mean latency of （211.21 ±25.55） ms and a mean amplitude of （6.05 ± 1.53） pV was recorded from both occipitotemporal areas in 30 out of 34 participants. This was termed ＂nd＂ and represented the evoked potential associated with depth perception. RESULTS： There were no significant differences in nd amplitude or latency between the two hemispheres, the two eyes, or genders （P 〉 0.05）. CONCLUSION： The evoked potential associated with depth perception was not influenced by gender, hemisphere, or eye dominance.

Lacrimal gland tumors in Turkey：types,frequency,and outcomes

AIM： To evaluate the clinical, radiological, and treatment features of lacrimal gland ***： Retrospective review of 99 eyes of 92 patients with lacrimal gland tumors diagnosed and managed in a single institution between January 1999 and March 2017. Clinical and radiological features, histopathology, treatment methods, and prognosis were ***： The mean patient age was 40.3（range： 7-80）*** diagnosis was made histopathologically in 91（91.9%） tumors and on a clinical and radiological basis in 8（8.1%） tumors. Final diagnoses included idiopathic orbital inflammation（pseudotumor） in 46（46.5%） lesions, pleomorphic adenoma in 14（14.1%）, adenoid cystic carcinoma in 12（12.1%）, granulomatous inflammation in 10（10.1%）, lymphoma in 5（5.0%）, benign reactive lymphoid hyperplasia in 3（3.0%）, dacryops in 3（3.0%）, carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma in 2（2.0%）, adenocarcinoma in 1（1.0%）, dermoid cyst in 1（1.0%）, cavernous hemangioma in 1（1.0%）, and leukemic infiltration in 1（1.0%）. Nonepithelial tumors comprised 64.6%（n=64） of all lacrimal gland tumors, epithelial tumors 32.3%（n=32）, dermoid cyst 1%（n=1）, cavernous hemangioma 1%（n=1）, and leukemic infiltration 1%（n=1）. There were in total 78（78.8%） benign and 21（21.2%） malignant tumors. CONCLUSION： Overall, 65% of lacrimal gland tumors were of non-epithelial origin and 32% of epithelial origin. By histopathology and clinical evaluation, 79% of lacrimal gland tumors were benign. The most common lacrimal gland tumors include idiopathic orbital inflammation（46.5%）, epithelial（32.3%）, and lymphoproliferative（8.1%） lesions.

Factors affecting recurrence after surgical treatment in cases with ocular surface squamous neoplasia

AIM: To evaluate the risk factors leading to recurrence in patients with ocular surface squamous neoplasia(OSSN)METHODS: The records of 112 patients with OSSN who underwent treatment and follow-up between February 1999 and August 2018 were reviewed ***: Totally 67 patients(59.8%) were male and 45 patients(40.2%) were female. The mean age at presentation was 63.7 y(range 22-87 y). Partial lamellar scleroconjunctivectomy(PLSC) was performed in 105(93.7%) cases and enucleation was performed in 7(6.3%) cases due to bulbus invasion as the first step treatment. Treatments used in addition to PLSC included cryotherapy in 78 eyes(74.3%), alcohol epitheliectomy in 57 eyes(54.3%) for presence of corneal involvement, and amniotic membrane transplantation in 17 eyes(16.2%) for ocular surface reconstruction. Topical mitomycin C was used in 10 patients(9.5%) and strontium-90(Str-90) treatment in 4(3.8%) patients because surgical margins were tumor positive at the histopathological examination. Postoperative histopathologic diagnoses were squamous cell carcinoma(52 cases), carcinoma in situ(44 cases), moderate conjunctival intraepithelial neoplasia(11 cases), and mild conjunctiva intraepithelial neoplasia(5 cases). At a mean follow-up of 20.1 mo, tumor recurrence was observed in 21(18.8%) cases. The rate of recurrence was found to be lower in cases that underwent supplemental cryotherapy compared to those that did not(Pnd overall globe salvage rate is 90.2% for OSSN at relatively short-term follow-up.

Design optimisation for distance between additional and tap winding in high-voltage transformers

The transformer is one of the main components in the power network and transformer windings are one of the most expensive elements in the power transformer. Optimisation of winding distances is one of the most important parameters during the manufacturing of transformer. The distance between the windings in the two winding transformers is well known to transformer designers and manufacturers. However, insulation of the high voltage transformer with additional winding and tap winding is still a major problem for transformer designers. In this study, the additional winding to tap winding distance optimisation is made for a high voltage power transformer. Optimisation of the transformer's windings just not minimises the cost of the transformer but also increases the lifetime of the transformer. With additional winding and tap winding in high-voltage transformers, insulation distance is a major concern for minimising the cost and size of the high voltage transformer. In this study, an approach is made to balance the cost, size, and safety of high voltage transformers. The optimised distance and position between tap winding and additional winding are determined by using the finite element analysis. The finite element method results were also verified by making a prototype transformer.
