Estimation of erosion induced nutrients loss under different land uses: A case study in Miandam Valley, Swat Pakistan

In order to design Sustainable Land Management(SLM)plans or interventions it is important to understand the land use change and subsequent *** basic aim of this study was to assess the impact of land use land cover(LULC)change on soil physico-chemical properties and nutrients loss under different land use/land cover changes within Miandam watershed of Swat valley,*** study area was divided into three major types on the basis LULC type(Dense forest,Moderate forest and Agriculture land).A total of 81 soil samples were collected from the study area(27 from each land use)through stratified random sampling and were transferred to the *** prepared soil samples were then tested for various physico-chemical properties such as pH,electrical conductivity,contents of organic matter,organic carbon,sand,silt,clay,nitrogen,phosphorus,potassium,iron,copper and *** showed that LULC significantly affected all soil parameters except electrical conductivity and *** all the nutrients assessed,the enrichment ratio was greater than 1 which showed that the most fertile layer of the soil in the cropped areas was transported through soil *** this study,time-series satellite images were used to determine the spatiotemporal changes in the LULC of Miandam valley of Swat,Pakistan,and the possible effect of LULC on soil properties was *** information generated on the soil properties as indicators of soil health could be used to inform the stakeholders about the effect of LULC change in the study ***-temporal image acquired by Landsat sensors for the year 2018 was used for quantifying changes in the study *** Landsat images for the year 2018 were classified into six land cover/land use *** increase in agricultural activities caused an increase in the land farming areas which led to an increase in the rate of deforestation in the ***,the present study results reveal that the use of the soil for agriculture i

Effects of the Application of Different Concentrations of NaN3 for Different Times on the Morphological and Cytogenetic Characteristics of Barley （Hordeum vulgate L.） Seedlings

Sodium azide （NAN3） has been used in many biological studies as a mutagen. In the present study, the morphological and cytogenetic effects of NaN3 on barley （Hordeum vulgare L.） seedlings were investigated. Seeds of barley were treated with different concentrations of NaN3 （0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 mmol/L） and applied for different periods of time （3 and 4 h）. Parameters investigated, except for the mitotic index, were determined on Days 7 and 14. Increasing concentrations of NaN3 affected germination rates on Days 7 and 14 following application for 3 and 4 h. Although the length of the roots and leaves was affected by treatment with NaN3 on Day 14 of the germination period, coleoptile length was affected by NaN3 treatment on Day 7. Increasing concentrations of NaN3 and increased treatment period decreased the mitotic index compared with the untreated control. The inhibitory effects of NaN3 on the mitotic index indicate that NaN3 can have genotoxic and mutagenic effects on barley seedlings.

Long term outcomes for patients treated with half-fluence photodynamic therapy for chronic central serous chorioretinopathy: a case series

A case series was used to evaluate the efficacy of halffluence photodynamic therapy（PDT） for chronic central serous chorioretinopathy（CSCR）. Patients were treated with standard-dose verteporfin and half-fluence PDT. Totally 13 eyes from 11 patients were included. The mean patient age was 52.0 y. There was a mean reduction in central retinal thickness of 107.0 microns. Totally 7/13 eyes（53.8%） achieved resolution of subretinal fluid（SRF） on optical coherence tomography（OCT） scan after 1 treatment with PDT. Four eyes had further treatment with PDT; of these 1 eye achieved resolution of SRF. Seven of the 13 eyes（53.8%） achieved an improvement of more than 5 ETDRS letters. One patient experienced acute macula oedema 1 d post PDT treatment. These results support the hypothesis that half-fluence PDT can have a positive effect in chronic CSCR for a gain in visual acuity and reduction in sub-retinal fluid. Acute macula oedema is a rare but potential adverse effect of half-fluence PDT.

Effect of endogenous hypergastrinemia on gallbladder volume and ejection fraction in patients with autoimmune gastritis

BACKGROUND: Gastrin has a cholecystokinetic action on gallbladder motility, and cholecystokinin and gastrin act directly on the smooth muscle of the gallbladder. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of endogenous hypergastrinemia on gallbladder motility in patients with autoimmune gastritis. METHODS: Forty-one patients (29 females, 12 males; mean age, 46 years) with autoimmune gastritis and 29 healthy subjects (17 females, 12 males; mean age, 44.8 years) were enrolled in the study. Fasting and postprandial gallbladder volumes were measured ultrasonographically with the ellipsoid technique and the ejection fraction of the gallbladder was calculated from fasting and postprandial volumes. All subjects were investigated after 12 hours of fasting and 30 minutes after a standard test meal. RESULTS: The gallbladder ejection fraction (%) of the patients with autoimmune gastritis was lower than that of the control group (46.06±18.28% vs 55.03±14.67%, P=0.032). There was no difference between patients with autoimmune gastritis and the control group in terms of the mean fasting gallbladder volume (30.38±12.85 vs 29.27±9.91 cm 3 , P=0.189) and the mean postprandial gallbladder volume (15.67±8.32 vs 13.44±7.69 cm 3 , P=0.258). Logistic regression analysis of baseline parameters revealed that 'abdominal bloating' was a risk factor for the low gallbladder ejection fraction in autoimmune gastritis patients (P=0.045, F=4.40). In addition, logistic regression analysis of baseline parameters revealed that smoking (n=5, P=0.025, F=5.44) is a predictor of low gallbladder ejection fraction in patients with autoimmune ***: Patients with endogenous hypergastrinemia have a low gallbladder ejection fraction compared with healthy controls. This study shows that at least part of upper gastrointestinal symptoms observed in this patient population may be due to altered gallbladder motility.

We report the experimental results of hybrid four-wave mixing and fluorescence signals from nitrogen-vacancy(NV)centers in diamond. The fluorescence signals are slowed owing to dark state. The observed delay time of light slowing due to interconversion between NV^- and NV^0 is about 6.4 μs. The relative intensities of read-out signals change with the wavelength and power of writing pulse. Based on light slowing, we present the model of all-optical time division multiplexing. The intensity ratio in different demultiplexed channels is modulated by the wavelength and power of control field. It has potential applications in quantum communication and all-optical network.

A selective approach to the surgical management of periampullary cancer patients and its outcome

BACKGROUND： Pancreaticoduodenectomy is a high risk, complex, technically challenging operation associated with significant perioperative morbidity and mortality. This study on the surgical management of periampullary cancer patients is based on our experience in a period of nearly 13 years. METHODS： The study was conducted on two groups of patients： group A included 42 patients who were treated between January 2000 and September 2005 and group B included 134 patients who were treated between October 2005 to October 2012. Preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative details of all these patients were collected, tabulated and analyzed to assess the impact of the selective approach introduced in the department with effect from October 2005. RESULTS： Intraoperative details revealed highly significant differences in the management of the two groups of patients in respect of operative time （250.4 vs 126.6 minutes; P〈0.001）, operative blood loss （1070.2 vs 414.9 mL; P〈0.001） and intraoperative blood transfusion （1A vs 0.2 units; P〈0.001）. Variations between the two groups in the frequency of complications were found to be statistically insignificant. However, the difference between the two groups in the overall morbidity of patients （47.6% vs 26.1%; P=0.009） and the length of their hospital stay （11.8 vs 7.8 days; P〈0.001） were significant. CONCLUSION： A selective approach applied to the surgical management of periampullary cancer patients is a step in the right direction.

Study on the geochemical correlation of crude oils of Palaeocene and Jurassic ages from the Potowar Indus Basin in northern Pakistan

This study deals with a detailed geochemical characterization of three crude oils from the Upper Indus Basin,Punjab,*** samples were obtained from three productive oil fields of the Datta Formation(Jurassic),Lochhart(Palaeocene) and the Dhak Pass zone(Palaeocene).The GC parameters for and the bulk properties of Datta Formation oils are essentially coincident with those of the oils from the Dhak Pass Formation in the Upper Indus Basin,Pakistan and the oils likely originate from a marine source *** contrast,the Lockhart Formation oils show different behaviors and seem to be originated from dirty carbonate rocks although all three crude oils are mature,being of non-biodegraded and somewhat mixed organic matter *** Pr/Ph values and high C35 homohopane index for the Lockhart Formation oils suggest a source of anoxic environment with low Eh while oils from the Datta Formation and Dhak Pass Formation showed different trends,i.e.,lower values of C35 homohopane index indicating different depositional environment than oil from the Lockhart *** three crude oils from the Upper Indus Basin are mature for the hopane ratios,i.e.,Ts/Ts+Tm,C3222S/(S+R) and C30 αβ/(αβ+βα) and sterane ratios,i.e.,C2922S/(S+R) and C29ββ/(ββ+αα) but oils from the Lockhart Formation seem to be less mature than those from the Palaeocene and Datta Formation according to plots like API° *** Index,Pr/Ph *** relative composition of 5α(H),14β(H),17β(H)-24-ethylecholestanes and the C2920S/20S+20R index,indicate that all three crude oils are equally mature,which makes it unlikely with respect to the above said *** difference is may be due to the migratory chromatography which alters the concentrations of sterane and hoapnes and hence gives different *** oils do not exhibit UCM and have complete n-alkane profiles indicating non-biodegradation.
