Transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy for myopia:effect of age and keratometric values

AIM:To investigate demographic and preoperative factors increasing the risk of ametropia following transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy(trans PRK)in myopia and myopic ***:This retrospective cohort study included myopic eyes(-0.50 to-8.75 D)with or without astigmatism(up to 3.50 D)enrolled at *** Eye Hospital *** PRK was performed using Technolaz 217 z100 excimer *** were clustered into ametropia and emmetropia group based on uncorrected distance visual acuities(UDVA)3 mo *** preoperative and intraoperative parameters were analyzed using Logistic regression to obtain their effect on ametropia risk following trans ***:A total of 140 eyes of 87 consecutive subjects were *** of ametropia following trans PRK was 20(14.29%)*** in ametropia group were significantly older than the emmetropia group(31.80±14.23 vs 18.88±2.41,respectively;P-6 D;OR=12.78),steeper anterior keratometric readings(Kmax>45 D and mean K>44 D;OR=4.28 and 4.35,respectively)increased the risk of ametropia following trans *** multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that age was the strongest predictor for the incidence of ametropia following trans *** of trans PRK were overcorrection,suspected posterior keratoectasia and accommodation ***:Older age can be the strongest factor for increasing ametropia risk following trans ***-off points of Kmax and mean K at 45 and 44 D respectively are proposed as the predictors for ametropia following trans PRK.

Introduction and evaluation of a novel hybrid brattice for improved dust control in underground mining faces: A computational study

A proper control and management of dust dispersion is essential to ensure safe and productive underground working environment. Brattice installation to direct the flow from main shaft to the mining face was found to be the most effective method to disperse dust particle away from the mining face. However,it limits the movement and disturbs the flexibility of the mining fleets and operators at the tunnel. This study proposes a hybrid brattice system- a combination of a physical brattice together with suitable and flexible directed and located air curtains- to mitigate dust dispersion from the mining face and reduce dust concentration to a safe level for the working operators. A validated three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic model utilizing Eulerian–Lagrangian approach is employed to track the dispersion of dust particle. Several possible hybrid brattice scenarios are evaluated with the objective to improve dust management in underground mine. The results suggest that implementation of hybrid brattice is beneficial for the mining operation: up to three times lower dust concentration is achieved as compared to that of the physical brattice without air curtain.

Zeolite A Synthesized from Geothermal Waste Using Conventional and Microwave Heating for the Hydrothermal Treatment

Zeolite A has been successfully synthesized from geothermal waste with natrium aluminate and natrium silicate using conventional(C-H)and microwave heating(M-H)for the hydrothermal *** products obtained for different aging times have been characterized using X-Ray Diffraction(XRD),Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).It is shown that with the M-H process,zeolite can be formed at relatively low temperature(100°C)in a relatively short time(40 min).The crystallization of zeolite A has been found to be generally promoted by an increase of aging and synthesis time;however,it has also been observed that relative long aging times can transform it into *** A produced through the M-H process generally displays a smaller and more homogeneous crystal size with respect to that obtained with the C-H method.

Antioxidant and anti-caspase 3 effect of chitosan-Pinus merkusii extract nanoparticle against lead acetate-induced testicular toxicity in rat

Objective: To investigate the antioxidant and anti-caspase 3 effect of chitosan-Pinus merkusii extract nanoparticle on lead acetate-induced toxicity in rat testis. Methods: Chitosan-Pinus merkusii nanoparticles were identified by dynamic light scattering and scanning electron microscope. The male rats were divided into control group (rats were given with distilled water);lead acetate group [rats were injected with lead acetate 20 mg/kg body weight (BW) i.p.], and the treatment group (rats were given the chitosan-Pinus merkusii nanoparticle 150 mg;300 mg;600 mg/kg BW orally and were injected with lead acetate 20 mg/kg BW). The testis tissues were collected to evaluate the malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), histological evaluations of testis damage, and the caspase 3 mRNA expression was measured by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Results: The dynamic light scattering showed that the size of chitosan-Pinus merkusii nanoparticle was (530.2±38.2) nm. The scanning electron microscope images of the chitosan-Pinus merkusii nanoparticles showed an irregular shape, and the morphology surface showed the rough surface. The treatment with lead acetate resulted in significantly increasing MDA level and caspase 3 mRNA expression, and significantly decreasing level of SOD and GPx when compared with control group. The treatment with the chitosan-Pinus merkusii nanoparticle 600 mg/kg BW but not 150 and 300 mg/kg BW significantly decreased the MDA levels, caspase 3 mRNA expression, and also increased level of SOD and GPx when compared with lead acetate group. The lead acetate induced loss of the normal structure of testicular cells and necrosis, whereas treatment with chitosan-Pinus merkusii nanoparticle inhibited testicular cell necrosis. Conclusions: It can be concluded that chitosan-Pinus merkusii nanoparticle protects rat testis from oxidative damage and apoptosis caused by lead acetate, through increasing antioxidant

A Nonstandard Finite Difference Scheme for SIS Epidemic Model with Delay: Stability and Bifurcation Analysis

A numerical scheme for a SIS epidemic model with a delay is constructed by applying a nonstandard finite difference (NSFD) method. The dynamics of the obtained discrete system is investigated. First we show that the discrete system has equilibria which are exactly the same as those of continuous model. By studying the distribution of the roots of the characteristics equations related to the linearized system, we can provide the stable regions in the appropriate parameter plane. It is shown that the conditions for those equilibria to be asymptotically stable are consistent with the continuous model for any size of numerical time-step. Furthermore, we also establish the existence of Neimark-Sacker bifurcation (also called Hopf bifurcation for map) which is controlled by the time delay. The analytical results are confirmed by some numerical simulations.

The presence of hard rock in Mount Betung has caused the misalignment of the groundwater aquifers,and resulted in many drilling failures for *** integrated geophysics method using gravity survey and Geoelectric Vertical Electrical Soundings(VES)were conducted to study the effect of basement and hard rock on groundwater *** the gravity method,38 mapping points were carried out randomly,with a distance of 1-2 km ***,from the geoelectric method,51 VES points were acquired at the foot of Mount *** acquisition was conducted with a Schlumberger configuration with AB/2=1 m to 250 *** results show the Bouguer Anomaly in the west is 50-68 mgal due to the presence of hard rock in Mount *** anomaly responds to relatively shallow hard rocks near *** rocks composed of andesite and breccia normally present at the depth of 5-180 m during well *** isopach mapping from VES data(at AB/2=50 m,100 m,and 150 m)shows the dominant constituents of hard *** in hard rock contribute to secondary porosity,which could be a prospect zone that transmit *** finding shows that the fractures are randomly scattered,causing several well failures that have been ***,the fractures in the hard rock at the foot of Mount Betung acts as conduits between recharge at Mount Betung and the aquifer in the Bandar Lampung Basin.

Changes in interleukin-6 tear concentration and clinical outcome in moderate-to-severe bacterial corneal ulcers after corneal collagen cross-linking

We aimed to evaluate interleukin-6（IL-6） tear concentration and clinical outcome in patients with moderate-to-severe bacterial corneal ulcers post corneal collagen cross-linking（CXL） therapy. This pre-post designed study involving 21 moderate-to-severe corneal ulcer patients who underwent CXL therapy. Patients with infectious corneal ulcer were given CXL therapy as adjunctive treatment after 5 d of broadspectrum antibiotic treatment. Patients with moderate to severe infectious bacterial corneal ulcers were included in this study. Tear sampling was performed before CXL therapy, using sterile Schimer paper from conjunctival inferior fornix. CXL therapy was performed in accordance with the CXL Dresden protocol. Data recording and tear sampling were then performed at day 1 and day 7 after CXL therapy. Data recording included, presence of conjunctival hyperemia, visual analogue scale（VAS）, size of corneal defects, and decemetocele. There was a decrease in IL-6 tear concentration by day 7 after CXL therapy（P=0.001）. IL-6 concentration at 1 h after therapy（2274.67±2120.46 pg/m L） tended to be lower than before therapy（4330.09±3169.70 pg/m L）, but the difference was not statistically significant（P=0.821）. The size of corneal defects decreased significantly post CXL（P=0.007）. The log MAR visual acuity before and after CXL therapy was not found to be significantly different（P=0.277）. There was a significant decrease in VAS values（P=0.018） and blepharospasm（P=0.011） pre and post CXL. There was no significant decrease in conjunctival hyperemia pre and post CXL（P=0.293）. There was significant reduction in IL-6 tear concentration and clinical improvement in moderateto-severe bacterial corneal ulcers which underwent CXL therapy.

Improving high-temperature oxidation behavior by modifying Al and Co content in Al-Co-Cr-Fe-Ni high-entropy alloy

Composition modification was introduced to improve the oxidation resistance by varying Al and excluding Co from the Al-Co-Cr-Fe-Ni system. Since adjusting the composition shifted the valence electron concentration(VEC) of the alloys, the dual-phase structure of the alloys is expected to be more stable. At low temperatures(T < 1273 K), the alloys formed mixed oxide products. As oxidation temperature increased,only Cr_(2)O_(3)or Al_(2)O_(3)dominated the alloy’s surface. Compared to equiatomic AlCoCrFeNi(5-Equi), nonequiatomic AlCoCrFeNi(5-B 40) and four-component AlCrFeNi(4-B 2013) had better oxidation resistance due to monocrystalline-Al_(2)O_(3)formation. Besides the role of oxide formation, maintaining BCC and B2phases within the alloys is also beneficial to supporting the stable Cr_(2)O_(3)or Al_(2)O_(3).

We evaluate quantum Otto, Diesel and Brayton cycles employing multiple-state 1D box system instead of ideal gas filled cylinder. The work and heat are extracted using the change in the expectation of Hamiltonian of the system which leads to the first law of thermodynamics to quantum system. The first law makes available to redefine the force which is in fact not well defined in a quantum mechanical system and then it is applied to define the quantum version of thermodynamic processes, i.e. isobaric, isovolume and adiabatic. As the results, the efficiency of quantum Otto engine depends only on the compression ratio and will be higher than the efficiency of quantum Diesel which can decrease by the widening of expansion under isobaric process. The efficiency of quantum Brayton engine may reach maximum on certain combination between the wide of box under isobaric expansion and compression, under certain conditions. The amount of levels participated in the quantum heat engine system will potentially reduce the performance of the quantum heat cycles consisting isobaric process, but it can be resisted using isobaric process controller.

Simulation of Corrosion Crack in Pretensioned Prestressed Concrete Members

Corrosion of PC tendon embedded in concrete deteriorates performance of PC （prestressed concrete） members. Corrosion crack observed in pretensioned PC members is different from that in reinforced concrete and post tensioned PC members. The purpose of this study is to clarify mechanisms of corrosion crack in pretensioned PC members. Contribution of compressive stress induced by prestressing force and arrangement of PC tendons on corrosion crack in pretensioned PC members is investigated through experiment and numerical analysis. Three dimensional finite element analyses were carried out to simulate corrosion crack in PC specimen. Based on the analytical and experimental results, the influencing factor of corrosion crack in pretensioned PC members is discussed. It was concluded that the contribution of compressive stress in concrete by prestressing force on corrosion crack is not significant and that the dominant reason for wider corrosion cracks in pretensioned PC members is the arrangement of PC tendons with small intervals.
