Evaluation of xylanase and a fermentable xylo-oligosaccharide on performance and ileal digestibility of broiler chickens fed energy and amino acid deficient diets

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of a product consisting of a combination of xylanase and xylo-oligosaccharide(STBIO)on performance and ileal digestibility of broiler chickens fed energy and amino acid(AA)deficient ***-old male Ross 308 broiler chicks were randomly allocated to 8 pens per treatment,with 25 chicks per *** based on wheat-corn-soybean meal diets were arranged in a 3×2 factorial design:a positive control that met or exceeded nutrient recommendations(PC),a negative control diet with a 50 kcal/kg apparent metabolizable energy(AME)reduction(NC1)and NC1 with a 3%reduction in AA content(NC2),each with or without supplementation of 100 g/t of the *** weight gain(BWG),feed intake,feed conversion ratio corrected for mortality(FCR)and the European production efficiency factor(EPEF)were recorded from 0 to 42 *** d 42,ileal samples were collected to determine dry matter(DM),organic matter(OM),ash,protein and energy digestibility.A significant interaction was observed for BWG and feed intake(P<0.001).The energy and AA reduction reduced(P<0.05)BWG when compared to the *** effect of STBIO on BWG was greater in NC1(+451 g/bird)than in NC2(+314 g/bird)or PC(+176 g/bird)diets(P<0.05),and that in NC2 with STBIO was equal to that in PC without STBIO,and that in NC1 with STBIO was equal to that in PC with *** interactions were observed on the EPEF or FCR;however,STBIO improved EPEF(P<0.001)and FCR(P<0.001)irrespective of the energy reduction or AA *** intake of digestible DM,OM,ash and energy for the finisher period was increased with STBIO supplementation(P<0.01).A significant interaction was observed for the intake of digestible ***1 and NC2 reduced the intake of digestible protein;however,when STBIO was supplemented,it was improved in both diets to similar levels to the *** stimbiotic supplementation improved performance of broiler chickens fed all diets,particularly those deficient in AME and AA.

Excessive ethanol consumption affects virtually any organ,both by indirect and direct *** research in the last two decades has widened the knowledge about the paramount importance of proinflammatory cytokines and oxidative damage in the pathogenesis of many of the systemic manifestations of *** cytokines derive primarily from activated Kupffer cells exposed to Gram-negative intestinal bacteria,which reach the liver in supra-physiological amounts due to ethanol-mediated increased gut *** oxygen species(ROS)that enhance the inflammatory response are generated both by activation of Kupffer cells and by the direct metabolic effects of *** effects of this increased cytokine secretion and ROS generation lie far beyond liver *** addition to the classic consequences of endotoxemia associated with liver cirrhosis that weredescribed several decades ago,important research in the last ten years has shown that cytokines may also induce damage in remote organs such as brain,bone,muscle,heart,lung,gonads,peripheral nerve,and *** effects are even seen in alcoholics without significant liver ***,alcoholism can be viewed as an inflammatory condition,a concept which opens the possibility of using new therapeutic weapons to treat some of the complications of this devastating and frequent *** this review we examine some of the most outstanding consequences of the altered cytokine regulation that occurs in alcoholics in organs other than the liver.

Effect of indaziflam on microbial activity and nitrogen cycling processes in an orchard soil

Indaziflam is a preemergent herbicide widely used for the control of weeds in pecan(Carya illinoinensis)orchards in the southwestern region of the United *** the paucity of data regarding the effect of indaziflam on the biochemical properties of soils supporting pecan production,this study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different application rates of indaziflam on soil microbial activity,diversity,and biochemical processes related to nitrogen(N)*** two consecutive growing seasons(2015 and 2016),soil samples were obtained from experimental mesocosms consisting of soil-filled pots where pecan saplings were grown and treated with indaziflam applied at two different rates(25 and 50 g active ingredient(ai)ha^(-1),with the higher rate being slightly lower than the recommended field application rate of 73.1 g ai ha^(-1)).Soil samples were collected approximately one week before and one week after herbicide application for determination of soil microbial biomass and diversity,N mineralization,andβ-glucosaminidase *** samples collected from the control mesocosms without herbicide application were treated in the laboratory with two rates of indaziflam(75 and 150 g ai ha^(-1))to determine the immediate effect on microbial *** significant effect of herbicide treatment on soil respiration and microbial biomass was *** results showed a slight to moderate decrease in microbial diversity(7%in 2015 and 44%in 2016).However,decreasedβ-glucosaminidase activity with herbicide treatment was observed in soils from the mesocosms(33%)and soils treated with indaziflam in the laboratory(45%).The mineral N pool was generally dominated by ammonium after indaziflam application,which was consistent with the drastic decrease(75%)in nitrification activity measured in the laboratory *** results of this study indicate that indaziflam,even when applied at higher than recommended rates,has limited effects on soil microbial activity,but

Mushroom Production as an Alternative for Rural Development in a Forested Mountainous Area

Wild mushrooms are recognized as important non-wood forest products in mountainous ecosystems, but their real potential for generating rural economies has not been fully evaluated due to the difficulties in obtaining reliable productivity data, minimizing their true potential as contributor to rural economies. Mushroom yield models based on large data series from Pinus forest ecosystems in the region of Catalonia(Spain), combined with data from the Spanish National Forest Inventory allow us to estimate the potential mushroom productivity by forest ecosystems. The results of 24,500 tons/yr of mushrooms of which 16,300 tons are classified as edible and 7,900 tons are commonly marketed demonstrate the importance of mushroom productions in Catalonian pine forests, mostly located in mountainous areas where the development of agricultural activities is limited. Economic mushroom value is estimated at 48 million € for the edible mushroom and 32 million € for those corresponding to marketable yields, confirming the potential of this non-wood forest product. These production results and corresponding economic values provide a basis for the incorporation of wild mushrooms as significant non-wood forest products in the development of forest policies in mountainous areas.

Reduction of the closure time of postoperative enterocutaneous fistulas with fibrin sealant

AIM: To assess whether the use of fibrin sealantshortens the closure time of postoperative enterocutaneous fistulas (ECFs). METHODS: The prospective case-control study included 70 patients with postoperative ECFs with an output of 2 cm and without any local complication. They were divided into study (n = 23) and control groups (n = 47). Esophageal, gastric and colocutaneous fistulas were monitored under endoscopic visualization, which also allowed fibrin glue application directly through the external hole. Outcome variables included closure time, time to resume oral feeding and morbidity related to nutritional support. RESULTS: There were no differences in mean age, fistula output, and follow-up. Closure-time for all patients of the study group was 12.5 ± 14.2 d and 32.5 ± 17.9 d for the control group (P < 0.001), and morbidity related to nutritional support was 8.6% and 42.5%, respectively (P < 0.01). In patients with colonic fistulas, complete closure occurred 23.5 ± 19.5 d after the first application of fibrin glue, and spontaneous closure was observed after 36.2 ± 22.8 d in the control group (P = 0.36). Recurrences were observed in 2 patients because of residual disease. One patient of each group died during follow-up as a consequence of septic complications related to parenteral nutrition. CONCLUSION: Closure time was significantly reduced with the use of fibrin sealant, and oral feeding was resumed faster. We suggest the use of fibrin sealant for the management of stable enterocutaneous fistulas.

Assays for predicting and monitoring responses to lung cancer immunotherapy

Immunotherapy has become a key strategy for cancer treatment, and two immune checkpoints, namely, programmed cell death 1 （PD-1） and its ligand （PD-L1）, have recently emerged as important targets. The interaction blockade of PD-1 and PD-L1 demonstrated promising activity and antitumor efficacy in early phase clinical trials for advanced solid tumors such as non-small cell lung cancer （NSCLC）. Many cell types in multiple tissues express PD-L1 as well as several tumor types, thereby suggesting that the ligand may play important roles in inhibiting immune responses throughout the body. Therefore, PD-L1 is a critical immunomodulating component within the lung microenvironment, but the correlation between PD-L1 expression and prognosis is controversial. More evidence is required to support the use of PD-L1 as a potential predictive biomarker. Clinical trials have measured PD-L1 in tumor tissues by immunohistochemistry （IHC） with different antibodies, but the assessment of PD-L1 is not yet standardized. Some commercial antibodies lack specificity and their reproducibility has not been fully evaluated. Further studies are required to clarify the optimal IHC assay as well as to predict and monitor the immune responses of the PD-I/PD-L1 pathway.

Shade shelters increase survival and photosynthetic performance of oak transplants at abandoned fields in semi-arid climates

Forest restorations conducted in semiarid, seasonally dry climates must deal with the intense drought stress that affects tree seedlings during the dry season. Although this water deficit is the most commonly invoked source of mortality for seedlings, several other environmental factors may also preclude survival of transplants. For instance, it has been widely reported that excessive light reduces the efficiency of the photosynthetic apparatus, hence decreasing plant survival, but most seedling transplants in deforested areas are conducted under these light conditions. This study is focused in determining whether excessive light affects the photosynthetic performance and survival of Quercus coccolobifolia, a Mexican oak species, when their seedlings are transplanted in semiarid deforested areas. Further, this study tests the possibility of using artificial shade shelters to improve the ecophysiological performance and survival of seedlings. Oak seedlings were transplanted under full sunlight conditions and beneath artificial shade shelters of two different colors： white and black. To reduce water stress, and hence isolate the effects of light treatments, a drip irrigation system was implemented at each experimental plot. Seedling survival was monitored weekly for 128 days and photosynthetic performance was assessed by measuring chlorophyll fluorescence at three opportunities during the experiment. Sun-exposed seedlings showed lower photosynthetic performance and survival rates than those beneath shelters of both colors. These results suggest that sunlight damage can reduce seedling survival when they are transplanted in exposed sites, and that shade shelters can improve the success of forest restoration programs in semiarid climates.

Thrombin activation and liver inflammation in advanced hepatitis C virus infection

Hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection is associated with increased thrombotic risk. Several mechanisms are involved including direct endothelial damage by the HCV virus, with activation of tissue factor, altered fibrinolysis and increased platelet aggregation and activation. In advanced stages, chronic HCV infection may evolve to liver cirrhosis, a condition in which alterations in the portal microcirculation may also ultimately lead to thrombin activation, platelet aggregation, and clot formation. Therefore in advanced HCV liver disease there is an increased prevalence of thrombotic phenomena in portal vein radicles. Increased thrombin formation may activate hepatic stellate cells and promote liver fibrosis. In addition, ischemic changes derived from vascular occlusion by microthrombi favor the so called parenchymal extinction, a process that promotes collapse of hepatocytes and the formation of gross fibrous tracts. These reasons may explain why advanced HCV infection may evolve more rapidly to end-stage liver disease than other forms of cirrhosis.
