Female Sexual Function after Surgical Treatment of Urinary Incontinence

Introduction: Urinary incontinence is a common problem that can affect the quality of life of women of all ages and can negatively influence the exercise of sexuality. Aim: The aim of this study was to compare sexual function of women before and after surgical treatment for urinary incontinence. Method: The sample consisted of 38 women with urinary incontinence and surgical treatment (Burch or Sling procedure). The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) was used to evaluate sexual dysfunction before and after surgical treatment. Results: The mean age of the women in the study was 48 ± 8.8 years, and 58% were 50 years old or younger. By analyzing FSFI, it was observed that the majority of subjects had an overall index of sexual dysfunction (score < 26 points) before surgery. The desire and arousal domains improved significantly after surgery for all women included in the study. It was also observed that women with higher levels of education had more positive results related to desire. Conclusions: In our sample, in general, sexual function improved after surgical treatment of urinary incontinence, regardless of technique used, particularly in the discounter and pain domain. There was a substantial improvement of the sexual function among women who had presented with cystocele. Desire and arousal improved significantly after surgery, very likely due to the improvement of self-esteem after surgery.

Goat whey is an industry-discarded dairy by-product that has interesting nutritional value and a nutrient composition with important functional potential,where proteins have a high biological value and play an important role in the organism’s ***,the aim of this study was to identify,quantify,concentrate and investigate the capacity of goat whey proteins to perform different biological activities and to evaluate their acute *** proteins were quantified and identified by Bradford,Kjehdal and SDS-PAGE *** activity was performed against Listeria monocytogenes,Salmonella spp.,Staphylococcus aureus,Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli microorganisms and showed MIC ranging from 15 to 120μg mL-1,with the highest inhibition for *** *** activity was performed against human malignant melanoma cells and their proliferation inhibition was up to 66.8%within 72 h of *** highest antioxidant capacity was obtained at concentration 2 mg that showed 29.69%of inhibition of DPPH radical *** acute toxicity test was performed using Artemia franciscana larvae in which whey proteins were able to preserve larval survival throughout ***,we can conclude that goat’s whey has proteins that can play a positive effect on health,with antimicrobial activity and without *** present study highlights the great potential of goat’s whey to be developed as a safe biopreservative or as a functional ingredient in the food industry.

Simulation of Gamma-Ray and Neutron Spectrometers for Microsatellite Missions

Microsatellites have recently opened windows of frequent and low cost missions for planetary exploration. The performance of gamma-ray and neutron spectrometers on future microsatellite missions is simulated to assess the possibility of observation of hydrogen and major elements, given their concentration on the observation target. The measured elemental abundance will provide important geological constraints, and some of them may serve as space resources. Four different types of target bodies with various hydrogen concentrations in the range of 0 - 20,000 ppm are assumed as target compositions;Earth’s core, C-type, S-type and Martian meteorites. Gamma-ray and neutron emission rates show unique footprints that are related to the different elemental compositions. The starting point is the solid angle subtended between observation target and spectrometers that allow estimating the gamma-ray and neutron count rates emitted by the celestial bodies. In this work, three types of gamma-ray detectors;high-purity germanium (HPGe), CeBr3 and LaBr3(Ce), a neutron spectrometer combining a lithium glass scintillator with a boron loaded plastic scintillator and a dual mode spectrometer Cs2LiYCl6(Ce) (CLYC) are simulated, focusing on their observation backgrounds as a model case for microsatellite based measurements. The background count level of both gamma-ray (except for the LaBr3 detector) and neutron count rates was negligible under these particular conditions. The gamma-ray detectors were compared by the figure of merit, which was determined by their efficiency and energy resolution. It was found that each detector has unique advantages. The HPGe detector has the highest figure of merit due to its excellent energy resolution, whereas the CLYC detector is low in weight and power consumption due to its dual sensitivity to gamma-ray and neutron. Maternal Effects of Immediate versus Delayed Umbilical Cord Clamping: A Randomized Clinical Trial

OBJECTIVE: To compare maternal preoperative and postoperative hemoglobin variation after cord clamping. METHODS: Randomized clinical trial performed in Porto Alegre, RS from January to December 2012. It was included 356 women with habitual risk gestations. In the immediate cord clamping group, the umbilical cord section was realized between 0 and 60 s (group 1) while in the delayed cord clamping group it was realized >60 s (group 2). RESULTS: The mean (±standard deviation [SD]) preoperative hemoglobin was 12.13 ± 1.06 in the group 1 and 12.13 ± 1.11 in the group 2. The mean (±SD) postoperative day 2 hemoglobin level was 10.19 ± 1.46 in the group 1 and 10.24 ± 1.42 in the group 2. CONCLUSIONS: Delayed umbilical cord clamping resulted in a similar maternal hemoglobin level reduction at postoperative day 2.

Class III Reversion with Immediate Complete Denture and Immediate Implant-Retained Overdenture: Case Report

With the increased life expectancy, complete dentures have been used in the treatment of edentulism progressively. It restores stomatognathic system functions, providing improvements in chewing, aesthetics, and phonetics. The aim was to report an oral rehabilitation of a patient with severe aesthetic and functional impairment, with Angle’s class III malocclusion. The patient sought the extension project of the School of Dentistry of the Federal University of Minas Gerais with aesthetic complaints. After clinical and radiographic evaluation, the proposed planning was immediate complete denture maxilla and immediate implant-retained overdenture in mandible. During clinical evaluation it was observed that the patient was Angle’s III. The rehabilitation was performed as proposed and at the end of the treatment, it was possible to revert the class III occlusal pattern to Angle’s I. The excellent maxillomandibular relationship was achieved, which ensured optimal facial aesthetics and functional condition. It was concluded that the immediate complete dentures and immediate implant-retained overdenture might be beneficial for restoring the aesthetics and function of patients with Angle’s class III malocclusion.

Autoimmune hepatitis in a patient infected by HIV-1 and under highly active antiretroviral treatment:Case report and literature review

Liver disease has recently been described as an im-portant cause of morbidity and mortality in patientsinfected with human immunodeficiency virus （HIV）.Liver test changes are useful surrogates of the burdenof liver disease. Previous studies have shown that trans-aminase elevations are frequent among these *** cause of those changes is harder to establish inHIV-patients. We present a 61-year-old caucasian male,diagnosed with HIV type 1 infection since 1998, underhighly active antiretroviral treatment （HAART）, withvirological suppression and immunological *** presented in a follow-up laboratory workup highvalues of transaminases, arthralgia at the hip joints and hepatomegaly. Liver function tests were normal. Theantibodies to hepatitis viruses were negative. However,autoimmune study and liver biopsy were compatible with autoimmune hepatitis （AIH）. The AIH is a rare di-agnosis in HIV-infected patients perhaps because the elevation of transaminases and changes in liver function tests are often associated to HAART or to other possible liver diseases, namely viral hepatitis and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. The diagnosis may be underestimated. There are no specifc recommendations available for the treatment of HIV-associated AIH although the immuno-supression with slower tapering seems the most reason-able approach.

Germination Response of Ornamental Pine Seeds on a Two-Way Thermogradient Plate

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of temperature on germination of Pinus tabuliformis Carrière seed, Pinus gerardiana Wall. ex D. Don and Pinus roxburghii Sarg. Seeds of three species were distributed in Petri dishes with 1% agar solution;for the first step it was placed on a 2-way Grant’s thermogradient plate (a bi-directional incubator) for a period of 28 days and during the second step in an incubator type B.O.D. also for 28 days with non-germinated seeds in the first step. This instrument allows an assessment of a wide regime of constant and alternating temperatures, resulting to 144 different combinations of temperature, scheduled to the temperatures 4°C - 40°C. The lighting regime was 12 hours photoperiod for the two stages of the experiment. The best temperature for the germination of P. tabuliformis was 26.2°C (minimum of 7.9°C and maximum 37.0°C) and P. roxburghii was 15.6°C (minimum 10, 4°C and maximum 37.0°C). The seeds are neutral photoblastic. P. gerardiana showed low germination percentage (below 10%). The temperature that provided the highest germination percentage for P. tabuliformis was 26.2°C and 15.6°C for P. roxburghii.

Agronomic and Energetic Potential of Biomass Sorghum Genotypes

The biomass sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], is an interesting crop considering the necessity to invest in alternative sources to generate renewable energy. The objective of this experiment was to identify sorghum biomass genotypes with greatest agronomic and energetic potential, and verify if there is phenotypic association between agronomic and technological properties in the hybrids. The study was conducted in three cities of the Minas Gerais State, Brazil (Lavras, Uberlandia and Sete Lagoas). It was evaluated 16 genotypes of sorghum biomass, being 14 of them sensitive hybrids to photoperiod and two cultivars, as control, insensitive to photoperiod. The experimental design was a triple lattice 4 × 4, with plots formed by four linear rows of 5.0 m. The morphoagronomic characteristics evaluated for the three environments were: days to flowering (FLOW), plant height (PH), number of stems (NS) and green matter production (GMP). In the experiment conducted in Lavras, also it was evaluated the agronomic traits: stem diameter (SD) and dry matter production (DMP) besides the technological traits: higher heating value (HHV), crude fiber (CF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF). The genotype × environment interaction was significant for all traits. The hybrids had superior performance compared to the control genotypes. Biomass sorghum hybrids, sensitive to photoperiod, when compared with commercial hybrids of forage sorghum, insensitive to photoperiod, had an average production of 34 t ha-1 dry matter with 62% humidity and higher heating value of 4.400 Kcal/Kg. There was no phenotypic correlation between agronomic and technological characters evaluated.

Partial Nephrectomy as Treatment of an Atypical Metastasis from Prostate Cancer—A Case Report and Review of Literature

Background: Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer in man and the second in cancer-specific deaths in this population in the world. Most of the causes of death related to prostate cancer are due to its distant metastases, with the most common sites being: skeleton, distant lymph nodes, liver and lung. Renal metastasis is rare, and studies suggest infiltration due to arterial microembolization of the tumor. A key point in this scenario is the clinical suspicion of differential diagnoses, to offer the patient an effective therapy in such a specific case. Aim: To report a case of a patient with prostate cancer undergoing partial nephrectomy whose histopathological report revealed a metastatic lesion of that primary site. Case Presentation: 74 years old man, referred in May 2015 due to high PSA level and lumbago. PSA 323.11 ng/dl, rectal examination cT3a;biopsy was performed and histopathological study reported bilateral prostate adenocarcinoma, Gleason’s score 8 (4 + 4). Patient’s staging showed multiple secondary implants on skeletal scintigraphy. Tomography revealed solid exophytic lesion in the lower pole of the right kidney (4.7 × 3.6 cm);prostate without cleavage planes with seminal vesicles and pelvic node enlargement. Hormone therapy was initiated, PSA levels dropped to 9.51 ng/dl and total testosterone Conclusion: Given the rarity of these cases, it is not possible to presume that nephrectomy enhances the survival rates. However, we observed that partial nephrectomy was a good choice for our patient, being the first case described in the literature. More reports should be available and studies with higher levels of evidence should be conducted to assist us in patient orientation and decision making.
