Low pathogenic Avian Influenza (AI) virus has the ability to evolve to high pathogenic viruses resulting in significant econom.c losses in the poultry sector. This study aim. at assessing the im.act of H9N2 viral passaging in broilers and its relatedness to pathogenicity and am.no acid (a.a) sequences of the hem.gglutinin (HA) cleavage site and neuram.nidase (NA) stalk. The original H9N2 AI virus (P0) was used to challenge ten-21 days old broilers. Individual recovery of H9N2 virus from.hom.genates of trachea, lungs and airsacs was attem.ted in 9 days old chicken em.ryos, as a conclusion of the first passage (P1). Tracheal isolates of H9N2 were passaged for a second (P2) and a third (P3) tim. in broilers, followed by a sim.lar em.ryonic recovery procedure. The a.a. sequence of a part of HA1 cleavage site and Neuram.nidase stalk were com.ared am.ng the differently passaged viruses;an assessem.nt of the relatedness of the determ.ned a.a. sequences to the pathogenicity in broilers, based on frequency of m.rtality, m.rbidity signs, gross and m.croscopic lesions at 3 days post challenge with the P1, P2, and P3-H9N2, is concluded. An increase in certain m.rbidity signs and specific lesions was observed in P2- and P3-H9N2 challenged broilers com.ared to birds challenged with P1-H9N2. A conserved R-S-S-R am.no acid sequence at the HA1 cleavage site was observed in the differently passaged H9N2, associated with a variability in the NA stalk-a.a sequences. The passaging of the low pathogenic H9N2 virus in broilers leads to a trend of increase in pathogenicity, m.nifested in higher frequency of m.rbidity signs, and of specific gross and m.croscopic lesions of the exam.ned organs. This passaging was associated with a conserved a.a. sequence of the hem.glutinin cleavage site and a variability in the sequence of the neuram.nidase stalk. The continuous battle between hum.ns and the m.ltitude of pathogenic m.croorganism. in the environm.nt has sought relief in the form.of antim.crobials. But the counter attack by pathogenic organism. in the form.of m.ltidrug resistance, acquired by various m.chanism. such as transform.tion, transposition, conjugation and transduction is a m.jor reason for concern. Bacteriophages have contributed in a significant way to dissem.nation of genes encoding antim.crobial resistance, heavy m.tal resistance and virulence factors through the phenom.non of transduction. This review aim. at com.iling inform.tion about the different m.chanism. by which bacteriophages aid in transferring genes involved in antim.crobial resistance to Escherischia coli in various environm.nts.

Transposable elem.nts are capable of switching their positions on the genom. thereby causing gene arrangem.nts and contributing to genom. evolution. The aim.of this review is to specifically discuss the role of transposable elem.nts in transferring antim.crobial resistance genes in E. coli, thus contributing to increase in virulence and conferring the possibility of m.ltidrug resistance. Different types of transposable elem.nts such as transposons and integrons and their profound influence on E. coli antim.crobial resistance are the focus of this review.

Investigation of the fluid flow in an isolated rotor-stator system.with a peripheral opening

This paper deals with an experim.ntal, theoretical and num.rical study of a turbulent flow with separated boundary layers between a rotor and a stator. The system.is not subjected to any superim.osed radial flow. The periphery of the cavity is opened to the atm.sphere so that the solid body rotation for infinite discs is not always observed. Em.hasis was placed on develop- m.nt of an asym.totic approach and a step-by-step m.thod to com.ute the radial distribution of the core swirl ratio and the static pressure on the stator side. The theory also includes the radial and axial velocities in the core region. The num.rical sim.lation has been conducted with the com.ercial CFD code Fluent 6.1. The k- SST turbulence m.del is used, with the assum.tion of 2D-axisym.etric and steady flow. CFD validations have been perform.d by com.arison of the num.rical results with the corresponding theoretical results. Num.rical and experim.ntal results are in good agreem.nt with analytical solutions.

Background: The use of intrauterine device alters the norm.l balance between vaginal flora. It m.ght change cervicovaginal environm.nt, which was suggested to increase the risk for vulvovaginitis. It was found that up to 85% of levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system.users becom. am.norrheic 4 m.nths after insertion, or bleed only sporadically. It was hypothesized that this would have a beneficial effect on vaginal flora m.intaining norm.l balance. Objectives: The aim.of this study was to detect the effect of horm.nal intrauterine system.(“m.rena”: 20 m.crogram.24 hours intrauterine delivery system.Levonorgestrel) on vaginal flora by using pap sm.ar before and 6 m.nths after insertion. Study design: A prospective cohort study was carried out in a university m.ternity hospital. 210 subjects were included with pap sm.ar taken at tim. of insertion of IUS “m.rena” and another one taken 6 m.nths later to detect percentage of incidence of infection in IUS users. Vaginal flora was studied, and lactobacilli were graded according to Schr?der’s classification. A com.arison was m.de to allow detection of changes in vaginal flora caused by presence of horm.nal IUS “m.rena”. Results: Over half of cases (57.2%) showed worse vaginal flora after horm.nal IUS “m.rena” insertion than before. There was a highly statistically significant difference between Schr?der’s Grades before and after insertion (P value m.nal IUS “m.rena” results in significant change in m.crobial flora towards pathological bacteria.
