Frequent low dose alcohol intake increases gastric cancer risk: the Health Examinees-Gem (HEXA-G) study

Objective:Epidemiological studies indicate that alcohol increases gastric cancer(GC)risk,yet most studies have focused on heavy alcohol intake,leaving other factors understudied.A comprehensive investigation of the effects of the frequency and amount of alcohol intake may help elucidate the GC risk associated with drinking behavior.Methods:The Health Examinees-Gem(HEXA-G)study,a community-based large-scale prospective cohort study,enrolled Korean adults 40–69 years of age between the years 2004 and 2013.Incident GC cases were identified through linkage to Korea Central Cancer Registry data until December 31,2017.Self-reported questionnaires were used to survey alcohol consumption-related factors(duration,frequency,amount,and type of alcoholic beverages).The frequency and amount of alcohol consumption were combined to explore GC risk according to 4 drinking patterns:“infrequent-light”,“frequent-light”,“infrequent-heavy”,and“frequent-heavy”.We used Cox proportional hazard models to estimate the adjusted hazard ratios(HRs)and 95%confidence intervals(CIs),and investigate the relationship between alcohol intake and GC incidence.Results:A total of 128,218 participants were included in the analysis.During an average follow-up period of 8.6 years,462 men and 385 women were diagnosed with GC.In men,current drinkers showed a 31%greater risk of GC than non-drinkers(HR 1.31,95%CI 1.03–1.66),whereas no significant association was observed in women.In men,GC risk was associated with a higher frequency(P trend 0.02)and dose of ethanol intake in grams(P trend 0.03).In men,the“frequent-light”(≥5 times/week and<40 g ethanol/day)drinking pattern was associated with a 46%greater risk of GC(HR 1.46,95%CI 1.02–2.07)than the“infrequent-light”pattern(<5 times/week and<40 g ethanol/day).Conclusions:This study suggests that frequent intake of alcohol,even in low quantities per session,increases GC risk.Further research is warranted to evaluate the relationship between alcohol and GC in detail.

NADPH oxidase 4(NOX4)as a biomarker and therapeutic target in neurodegenerative diseases

Diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases are defined by inflammation and the damage neurons undergo due to oxidative stress. A primary reactive oxygen species contributor in the central nervous system, NADPH oxidase 4, is viewed as a potential therapeutic touchstone and indicative marker for these ailments. This in-depth review brings to light distinct features of NADPH oxidase 4, responsible for generating superoxide and hydrogen peroxide, emphasizing its pivotal role in activating glial cells, inciting inflammation, and disturbing neuronal functions. Significantly, malfunctioning astrocytes, forming the majority in the central nervous system, play a part in advancing neurodegenerative diseases, due to their reactive oxygen species and inflammatory factor secretion. Our study reveals that aiming at NADPH oxidase 4 within astrocytes could be a viable treatment pathway to reduce oxidative damage and halt neurodegenerative processes. Adjusting NADPH oxidase 4 activity might influence the neuroinflammatory cytokine levels, including myeloperoxidase and osteopontin, offering better prospects for conditions like Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. This review sheds light on the role of NADPH oxidase 4 in neural degeneration, emphasizing its drug target potential, and paving the path for novel treatment approaches to combat these severe conditions.

Revealing the influence of in-situ formed LiCl on garnet/Li interface for dendrite-free solid-state batteries

Inadequate interfacial contact between lithium and solid-state electrolytes(SSEs)leads to elevated impedance and the growth of lithium dendrites,presenting significant obstacles to the practical viability of solid-state batteries(SSBs).To ameliorate interfacial contact,optimizing the surface treatment of SSEs has been widely adopted.However,the formation of LiCl through acid treatment,an equally crucial factor impacting SSB performance,has received limited attention,leaving its underlying mechanism unclear.Our study aims to shed light on SSE characteristics following LiCl formation and the removal of Li_(2)CO_(3) through acid treatment.We seek to establish quantifiable links between SSE surface structure and SSB performance,focusing on interfacial resistance,current distribution,critical current density(CCD),and lithium deposition.The formation of LiCl,occurring as Li_(2)CO_(3) is removed through acid treatment,effectively mitigates lithium dendrite formation on SSE surfaces.This action inhibits electron injection and reduces the diffusion rate of Li atoms.Simultaneously,acid treatment transforms the SSE surface into a lithiophilic state by eliminating surface Li_(2)CO_(3).Consequently,the interfacial resistance between lithium and SSEs substantially decreases from 487.67 to 35.99Ωcm^(2) at 25°C.This leads to a notably high CCD of 1.3 mA cm^(-2) and a significantly extended cycle life of 1,000 h.Furthermore,in full SSBs incorporating LiCoO_(2)cathodes and acid-treated garnet SSEs,we observe exceptional cyclability and rate capability.Our findings highlight that acid treatment not only establishes a fundamental relationship between SSE surfaces and battery performance but also offers an effective strategy for addressing interfacial challenges in SSBs.

Colors of vegetables and fruits and the risks of colorectal cancer

AIM To investigate the relationship between the colors of vegetables and fruits and the risk of colorectal cancer in Korea.METHODS A case-control study was conducted with 923 colorectal cancer patients and 1846 controls recruited from the National Cancer Center in Korea. We classified vegetables and fruits into four groups according to the color of their edible parts(e.g., green, orange/yellow, red/purple and white). Vegetable and fruit intake level was classified by sex-specific tertile of the control group. Logistic regression models were used for estimating the odds ratios(OR) and their 95% confidence intervals(CI).RESULTS High total intake of vegetables and fruits was strongly associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer in women(OR = 0.32, 95%CI: 0.21-0.48 for highest vs lowest tertile) and a similar inverse association was observed for men(OR = 0.60, 95%CI: 0.45-0.79). In the analysis of color groups, adjusted ORs(95%CI) comparing the highest to the lowest of the vegetables and fruits intake were 0.49(0.36-0.65) for green, and 0.47(0.35-0.63) for white vegetables and fruits in men. An inverse association was also found in women for green, red/purple and white vegetables and fruits. However, in men, orange/yellow vegetables and fruits(citrus fruits, carrot, pumpkin, peach, persimmon, ginger) intake was linked to an increased risk of colorectal cancer(OR = 1.61, 95%CI: 1.22-2.12).CONCLUSION Vegetables and fruits intake from various color groups may protect against colorectal cancer.

Hyperreflective photonic crystals created by shearing colloidal dispersions at ultrahigh volume fraction

Colloidal crystallization serves as one of the most economic and scalable production methods for photonic crystals.However,insufficient optical performance,nonuniformity and low reproducibility remain challenges for advanced high-value applications.In this study,we optimally formulate a photocurable dispersion of silica particles and apply shear flow to unify the orientation of the colloidal crystals,ensuring high optical performance and uniformity.The silica particles experience strong repulsion at ultrahigh volume fractions of 50%but demonstrate low mobility,leading to polycrystalline structures.Applying shear flow to the dispersions allows the silica particles to rearrange into larger crystalline domains with a unidirectional orientation along the flow.This shear-induced structural change produces absolute reflectivity at the stopband as high as 90%and a high transparency of 90%at off-resonant wavelengths with minimal diffusive scattering.Furthermore,the strong interparticle repulsion ensures a uniform volume fraction of particles throughout the dispersion,reducing deviations in the optical properties.We intricately micropattern the photocurable dispersions using photolithography.Additionally,the photonic films and patterns can be stacked to form multiple layers,displaying mixed structural colors and multiple reflectance peaks without sacrificing reflectivity.These superior photonic materials hold promise for various optical applications,including optical components and anticounterfeiting patches.

Energy-storage systems and their production have attracted significant interest for practical applications.Batteries are the foundation of sustainable energy sources for electric vehicles(EVs),portable electronic devices(PEDs),etc.In recent decades,Lithium-ion batteries(LIBs) have been extensively utilized in largescale energy storage devices owing to their long cycle life and high energy density.However,the high cost and limited availability of Li are the two main obstacles for LIBs.In this regard,sodium-ion batteries(SIBs) are attractive alternatives to LIBs for large-scale energy storage systems because of the abundance and low cost of sodium materials.Cathode is one of the most important components in the battery,which limits cost and performance of a battery.Among the classified cathode structures,layered structure materials have attracted attention because of their high ionic conductivity,fast diffusion rate,and high specific capacity.Here,we present a comprehensive review of the classification of layered structures and the preparation of layered materials.Furthermore,the review article discusses extensively about the issues of the layered materials,namely(1) electrochemical degradation,(2) irreversible structural changes,and(3) structural instability,and also it provides strategies to overcome the issues such as elemental phase composition,a small amount of elemental doping,structural design,and surface alteration for emerging SIBs.In addition,the article discusses about the recent research development on layered unary,binary,ternary,quaternary,quinary,and senary-based O3-and P2-type cathode materials for high-energy SIBs.This review article provides useful information for the development of high-energy layered sodium transition metal oxide P2 and O3-cathode materials for practical SIBs.

Performance of the EDACS-ADP incorporating high-sensitivity troponin assay:Do components of major adverse cardiac events matter?

BACKGROUND:The accelerated diagnostic protocol(ADP)using the Emergency Department Assessment of Chest pain Score(EDACS-ADP),a tool to identify patients at low risk of a major adverse cardiac event(MACE)among patients presenting with chest pain to the emergency department,was developed using a contemporary troponin assay.This study was performed to validate and compare the performance of the EDACS-ADP incorporating high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I between patients who had a 30-day MACE with and without unstable angina(MACE I and II,respectively).METHODS:A single-center prospective observational study of adult patients presenting with chest pain suggestive of acute coronary syndrome was performed.The performance of EDACS-ADP in predicting MACE was assessed by calculating the sensitivity and negative predictive value.RESULTS:Of the 1,304 patients prospectively enrolled,399(30.6%;95%confidence interval[95%CI]:27.7%–33.8%)were considered low-risk using the EDACS-ADP.Among them,the rates of MACE I and II were 1.3%(5/399)and 1.0%(4/399),respectively.The EDACS-ADP showed sensitivities and negative predictive values of 98.8%(95%CI:97.2%–99.6%)and 98.7%(95%CI:97.0%–99.5%)for MACE I and 98.7%(95%CI:96.8%–99.7%)and 99.0%(95%CI:97.4%–99.6%)for MACE II,respectively.CONCLUSION:EDACS-ADP could help identify patients as safe for early discharge.However,when unstable angina was added to the outcome,the 30-day MACE rate among the designated lowrisk patients remained above the level acceptable for early discharge without further evaluation.

Oxidation behavior and improvement in nonflammability of LPSO-type Mg–Zn–Y–Sr alloy

Mg_(97)Zn_(1)Y_(2)alloys with high ignition temperatures were developed by adding Sr.The addition of Sr resulted in the formation of a uniform and thin Y_(2)O_(3)film.Mg–Zn–Y alloys containing at least 0.25 at.%Sr exhibited ignition temperatures of 1270–1320 K.As a result of EDS measurement,Sr was found to be concentrated in the Y_(2)O_(3)film.In addition,a mixed film of MgO and Sr O formed on the outer layer in the 1.5 at.%Sr-containing Mg_(97)Zn_(1)Y_(2)alloy.These findings suggest that the uniform and thin Y_(2)O_(3)film that maintains high soundness at high temperatures was formed owing to valence control and the formation of a protective outer oxide film.

Tumor-protein 53(p53)is a transcription factor(TF)encoded by TP53(Trp53 in mice)and is a master regulator of tumor-suppressive programs'.Importantly,TP53 is the most frequently mutated gene in human cancer,and its loss of function contributes to tumor development,exemplified by variable p53 mutations detected in 50%-75%of pancreatic cancers.2 From these perceptions,a number of targets transcribed by p53 that confer tumor suppression have been identified.Nevertheless,our understanding of how p53 prevents normal cells from initiating tumorigenesis is still incomplete.To complement this limitation,herein,we established a new approach to identify underlying effectors transcribed by p53 in normal physiology.

Breaking the optical efficiency limit of virtual reality with a nonreciprocal polarization rotator

A catadioptric lens structure,also known as pancake lens,has been widely used in virtual reality(VR)displays to reduce the formfactor.However,the utilization of a half mirror(HM)to fold the optical path thrice leads to a significant optical loss.The theoretical maximum optical efficiency is merely 25%.To transcend this optical efficiency constraint while retaining the foldable characteristic inherent to traditional pancake optics,in this paper,we propose a theoretically lossless folded optical system to replace the HM with a nonreciprocal polarization rotator.In our feasibility demonstration experiment,we used a commercial Faraday rotator(FR)and reflective polarizers to replace the lossy HM.The theoretically predicted 100%efficiency can be achieved approximately by using two high-extinction-ratio reflective polarizers.In addition,we evaluated the ghost images using a micro-OLED panel in our imaging system.Indeed,the ghost images can be suppressed to undetectable level if the optics are with antireflection coating.Our novel pancake optical system holds great potential for revolutionizing next-generation VR displays with lightweight,compact formfactor,and low power consumption.
