Evaluation Regarding the Efficacy and Safety of a Probiotic Mixture in Healthy Volunteers with Evacuation Disorders

Probiotics have been used in humans for almost a century and are widely recommended because they play an important role in gastrointestinal physiological and pathophysiological processes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effi- cacy and safety of a probiotic mixture in healthy volunteers with evacuation disorders. We undertook a prospective study with historical control. We used the number of evacuations, effort and stool consistency 10 days before, 10 days during and 10 days after treatment with the probiotic as primary outcome measures. Eligible par-ticipants comprised 25 patients with an average age of 25.12 years (range: 18 - 55) who suffered from evacuation disorders. BIO L6 is a func- tional food consisting of a probiotic preparation that contains 1 mg (108 CFUs) of lyophilized strains of Lactic Acid Bacteria resuspended in 250 mL of drinking water. The probiotic preparation was prescribed daily for two weeks, five days a week. A significant increase in the number of evacuations was observed in 23 patients during BIO L6 consump- tion and continued in 20 after consumption. The degree of effort spent defecating decreased in 17 patients during treat- ment and in 7 after treatment. A significant improvement (P < 0.001) in stool consistency was also observed in all pa- tients receiving BIO L6. Fourteen patients had at least one adverse event (AE) for one or two days during treatment;most treatment-related AEs were considered minor or mild in terms of severity and were consistent with AEs reported for probiotic consumption. The results of this study suggest that the use of probiotic mixture BIO L6 is effective, safe and tolerable and provides beneficial effects for subjects with evacuations disorders.

Herein,we present the electrocatalytic four-electron hydrogenation of oxalic acid into glycolic acid using black TiO_(2)as an *** acid is an abundant compound found in several sources of organic *** results showed a high selectivity of black TiO_(2)toward glycolic acid,with the formation of glyoxylic acid being the rate-limiting step (glyoxylic acid is the two-electron intermediate).The highest Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 69.6%±8.3% was achieved at 10.2 mA cm^(-2)in 4 h of electrolysis using an H-type cell operated at room temperature,with 50.2%±3.8% of oxalic acid conversion (degradation kinetic constant k=0.0042±0.0001 min-1),58.8%±7.0%of reaction yield and 1.2±0.18 g L-1of glycolic acid production.A theoretical model of black TiO_(2)coming from anatase TiO_(2)was implemented by introducing Ti3+defects,which gave black TiO_(2)the theoretical capability to easily transform oxalic acid into glycolic acid as experimentally *** reaction mechanism was supported and described in detail by density functional theory calculations,which revealed that surface Ti^(3+)states were the main catalytic *** is the first time that a detailed step-by-step mechanism at the atomic level has been proposed for this electrocatalytic reaction,which represents a valuable contribution to the understanding of this process of high energy/environmental *** is also the first time that black TiO_(2)has been used as an electrocatalyst for this sustainable process.

Background:In the context of the search for cost-efficient treatments,Ulmo(Eurcyphia cordifolia)honey is an excellent alternative for treating burn wounds and could have a profound medical,social,and economic *** acid is an enzymatic co-factor necessary for the synthesis of collagen and the proliferation of fibroblasts and has been proposed as a coadjuvant to strengthen the healing effects of *** aim of this work was to evaluate by morphometric studies the healing wounds caused by burns treated with Ulmo honey alone and supplemented with ascorbic acid in guinea pig(Cavia porcellus).Methods:Fifteen guinea pigs were used and divided randomly into three groups:positive control(C+),experimental with unsupplemented honey(H),and experimental with supplemented honey(SH).A uniform deep burn covering 1 cm2of the back skin was *** following indices were calculated for the morphometric study:superficial contraction index of the wound,deep contraction index of the wound,wound severity index,global healing index,global contraction index,and dermal proliferation ***:The superficial contraction index of the wound,global healing index,global contraction,and dermal proliferation area values of the experimental with supplemented honey group were higher than the other groups(P<0.05).Conclusions:According to these results,the combination of honey with an antioxidant(ascorbic acid)promotes an appropriate action to support the healing *** study showed that by supplementing the Ulmo honey with ascorbic acid,the healing and contraction effects can be strengthened in burn wounds compared to unsupplemented *** results were proof of the synergy between honey and ascorbic acid in healing burn wounds.

Functional diversity in an Andean subparamo affected by wildfire in Colombia

Recently,the Andean subparamo in Colombia has experienced severe wildfires,but little is known about the functional composition of recovering or not after a ***,we examined the functional community composition subparamo affected byfire in *** documented how functional traits changed 31 months after the disturbance and compared them with an unburned *** sampled from one to two years after the fire every four months,then registered all recruits in 1655m *** individuals were classified into strategy functional groups based on the traits of persistence and *** first group was stem type and regeneration mechanism(seedling and resprout),and the second was fruit type and dispersal *** investigated the degree to which functional diversity changes plant communities over time(woody and non-woody),and we compared it with an unburned *** most relevant results showed that resprouts and seed regenerated increased post-fire time and significant differences between sampling *** anemochory is the most relevant dispersal mode that indicates the community capacity to colonize the new gaps opened by the fire *** discuss how wildfire appears to be a triggering factor for persistence and dispersal strategy groups in subparamo burned given their characteristics of tolerance to *** this reason,a greater functional divergence between the ecosystems studied post-fire recovery has been related to higher levels of biodiversity at the landscape scale due to the high degree of endemism and significant differences in species composition between paramos.
