Characterization of oral yeasts isolated from healthy individuals attended in different Colombian dental clinics

The aim of this study was to identify the most frequent yeasts in the oral cavity of adult individuals without immune disorders and to associate the presence of these oral yeasts with different characteristics of each individual. Oral rinse samples were obtained from 96 healthy adults and cultured in Sabouraud dextrose agar media and CHROMagar. Yeasts were identified by sequencing the D1/D2 region of the 28 S rRNA gene. Probable association among the socio-demographic characteristics, body mass index, family and personal medical history,oral hygiene, tobacco and/or alcohol consumption habits and presence of oral fungi was analyzed. Contingency tables and logistic regression were employed to evaluate possible relationships between the presence of oral fungi and mixed colonization with these variables. 57.3% of the healthy individuals had oral yeasts and 21.8% had mixed colonization. The most prevalent yeasts were Candida albicans(52%), C. parapsilosis(17.9%), and C.dubliniensis(7.57%). Yeasts with most frequently mixed colonization were C. albicans and C. parapsilosis. No relationships were found among the variables analyzed. However, the presence of mixed colonization was related to the presence of dental prostheses(P<0.006), dental apparatuses(P=0.016) and O’Leary index(P=0.012). This is the first study that characterized oral yeasts in Colombian healthy individuals, determined the most prevalent oral yeasts C. albicans, C. parapsilosis and C. dublinensis and an association of mixed colonization with the use of dental prostheses and aparatology and poor hygiene.

The effect of sildenafil on retinal blood velocity in healthy subjects

Purpose:It has been suggested that Sildenafil may have beneficial therapeutic effects in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders.The retinal circulation is of significant interest as a marker of cerebral vascular disease since the retinal and cerebral vasculatures share many morphological and physiological properties,yet only the retinal circulation can be directly visualized.Therefore,our aim was to assess the change induced by Sildenafil on retinal blood velocity.Methods:Retinal flow velocity was measured 0.5,3 and 6 h following administration of 100 mg of Sildenafil using the Retinal Function Imager.Results:No clinical change in either systemic blood pressure or retinal flow velocities were observed.However,when controlling for heart rate and blood pressure,a significant drop in venous flow velocity 6 h following treatment(mean drop 0.3±0.07;95%CI:0.44–0.56,P=0.023)was revealed.Conclusions:In healthy volunteers,retinal venous flow velocity was significantly reduced at the 6-h time point following Sildenafil treatment.No effect was observed on arterial retinal flow velocity.

Diel Vertical Distribution of Zooplankton in Lake Baringo, Kenya

Diel zooplankton samples were obtained at a 4-m-deep central station on two sampling occasions in January and February, 2010 in Lake Baringo. Sampling was done at 1 m interval every four hours for 24 hours from 8:00 am to 04:00 am. Ten litres of lake water was collected by a Van Dorn sampler and sieved through a 50 μm mesh sieve and organisms in the entire sample counted. Concurrently, physico-chemical factors including temperature, pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen were measured at the same depths in situ. In both sampling months, the temperatures were higher during the day when stratification was observed just below the 1 m depth. This was, however, broken by diurnal winds in the evenings. PH and dissolved oxygen values followed the same trend but conductivity was generally uniform. In contrast to what has been observed in clear water lakes, the densities of Lake Baringo zooplankton were generally higher at the surface waters during the day while during the night the organisms were distributed throughout the lake column, a phenomenon which could be attributed to the high waters turbidity. The Proximity of zooplankton to the euphotic zone during the day provides them with feeding opportunities on phytoplankton.

The Active Management of Postpartum Uterine Atony—A Checklist Based Approach

Uterine atony remains the major cause of postpartum hemorrhage, and of death from postpartum hemorrhage in the United States. While existing guidelines outlining a general approach to postpartum hemorrhage are useful, recent data suggest that greater specificity may be necessary to significantly impact mortality. We present a highly specific and methodical approach to the management of uterine atony, which addresses what we believe to be the most common cause of preventable maternal hemorrhagic death in the US—lack of an intensive, focused approach to atony and perseverance with therapies that are not working. This protocol should result in cessation of hemorrhage by medical or surgical means within 1 hour of diagnosis. We then apply this protocol to a number of illustrative cases of maternal death due to atony. An approach involving the active management of uterine atony may assist clinicians in avoiding severe morbidity and mortality from uterine atony.

Formation of MEVEZUG Pure Ovino Reproducers in Tierra Caliente Guerrero,Mexico

The objective of the present work was to obtain pure ovine reproducers.Starting 2010 work began with the sheep herd of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of the Universidad Autónoma de Guerrero,located in the municipality of Pungarabato,Guerrero State,México.The faculty is 250 meters above sea level.The climate of the region is warm subhumid,with average temperature between 24 and 30°C,but in the heat season maximum temperatures up to 46°down in the shade.The rainfall regimen is 800-1,200 mm of rainfall per year.The production of sheep in Mexico is characterized mainly by creole animals and crosses are made with pure breeds imported from several European countries and USA.Therefore,there is a need to form local breeds adapted to the climatic conditions and production systems of Mexico.The sheep herd initially had 100 animal of hair,with 70 sheep with their lambs and a reproducer.These animals had phenotype Pelibuey,Black Belly,Doper and Katahdin.As of May 2010,consanguineous crosses were established.During this period the parameters were registered:date and type of birth,weight and sex of the newborn.Data on BW(Birth Weight)of males and females were analyzed by ANOVA(Analysis of Variance)and multiple comparison test was used for the comparison of means(Duncan,1955),with a significance level of P<0.05.The first reproducer was brown tobacco and had antlers,and the females had different phenotypes.Up to the present time,there are twenty studs with their respective descendants,and year 2019 the herd has 100 animals light brown and tobacco with their lambs(30),and a reproducer.The sheep are of medium size with 45 and 60 kg of average weight in females and male,respectively.Out of a total of 326 females and 335 males born,with an average weight of 2.62 kg at birth and a proliferative index of 1.41,20 MEVEZUG males were selected to be used as reproducers in 20 herds distributed in different sheep production units of the state of Guerrero.From the crosses of these breeders to the females of these herds
