Growth and Biochmical Studies of Mrigal Fish (Cirrhinus mrigala) Fed Graded Levels of Oil

A 45-day experiment was carried out to evaluate the growth performance, digestive enzymes activity and biochemical response of Cirrhinus mrigala fed graded levels of oil. Three isonitrogenous purified diets （6%, 8% and 10% of oil） were formulated. A total of 108 juveniles of Cirrhinus mrigala （5.95±0.25） g were equally distributed in triplicate groups in nine plastic tanks of 100 L capacity and fed under natural light cycle. Growth performance of the fish significantly reflected the effect of inclusion levels of oil tested but the diet with 8% lipid had the best significant growth performance [% weight gain, Feed Conversion Ratio （FCR） and Specific Growth Rate （SGR）], across different experimental groups. Levels of secretion of digestive enzymes in the fish fed different experimental diets resulted in significant values of （p〈0.05） amylase and lipase, while Aspartate transaminase （AST）, Alanine transaminase （ALT）, Lactate dehydrogenase （LDH） and Malate dehydrognnase （MDH） values in the muscle and liver decreased significantly （F〈0.05） as the levels of oii in the diet increased. However, serum biochemical parameters did not record any significant difference 6o〉0.05） with the exception of the total lipid across diets. The study confirmed the inclusion effect of graded levels ofoil in juvenile Mrigal diet, but the inclusion should not be more than 8% to avert growth depression.

Antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of African medicinal plants

Objective:To study antioxidant and antimicrobial properties ofTerminalia catappa,Psidium guajava,Alstonia boonei,Morinda lucida (M. lucida) andSpondias mombin leave extracts using ethanol, petroleum-ether and aqueous media. Methods: The free radical 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydroazyl was used to measure scavenging activities of extracts, while phenolic and flavonoid content were estimated by spectrophotometry. Antibacterial screening of extracts was done by determining zone of inhibition using disc diffusion method. Plant extracts were tested against five strains of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. After sterilization, the discs were loaded with concentrations of broad spectrum ciprofloxacin, and prepared extract solutions of different concentrations were refrigerated for 24 h. Determination of minimum inhibitory concentration of extracts in the screening assay was according to micro-broth dilution, while determination of minimum bactericidal concentration was carried out by agar diffusion. Results: The highest radical scavenging effect was found in petroleum ether extracts of all the plants withM. lucida andPsidium guajava having the highest and lowest values respectively. Aqueous solvent recorded highest phenolic content in all extracts with the exception ofM. lucida. Flavonoid content was extracted better fromAlstonia boonei andM. lucida with ethanol, while aqueous solvent extracted more from the other plants. With exception of extracts from petroleum ether, all others exhibited varying levels of antibacterial activities againstE. coli,Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Salmonella typhi,Vibrio cholera andStaphylococcus aureus. Conclusions:This study proved that all crude extracts showed strong antioxidant and antimicrobial potentials, which qualified them as nutraceuticals in fish feed production.

Evaluation of antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of some herbs used in sub-Saharan Africa, Nigeria

Objective: To examine antimicrobial and antioxidant potentials of Cissus populnea (C. populnea) root and Securidaca longipedunculata (S. longipedunculata) leaf and root extracts using aqueous, ethanol and petroleum-ether media. Methods: The free radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl was used to measure scavenging activities of extracts, while phenol and flavonoid contents were estimated by spectrophotometry and the antibacterial screening of extracts was done using disc diffusion method. The extracts were tested against five strains of Gram positive and negative bacteria. Minimum inhibitory concentration of extracts in the screening assay was according to micro-broth dilution, and minimum bactericidal concentration was carried out by agar diffusion method. Results: The ethanol extract of the S. longipedunculata leaf recorded the highest [(83.00 ± 2.97) μg/mL] radical scavenging potential while the least value [(48.50 ± 2.55) μg/mL] was recorded for C. populnea root ethanol extract. The highest phenol content was found in the ethanol extract of C. populnea [(145.60 ± 0.85) mg gallic acid equivalent/g], while the least value [(87.75 ± 3.46) mg gallic acid equivalent/g] was recorded in petroleum ether extract of S. longipedunculata. The highest and lowest values [(81.30 ± 0.99) and (46.60 ± 1.98) mg rutin equivalent/g] of flavonoid were recorded with ethanol extracts of S. longipedunculata leaf and root, respectively. The aqueous and ethanol leaf and root extracts of S. longipedunculata were active against the growth of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio cholerae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhi. Similar results were observed with ethanol and aqueous root extracts of C. populnea for the same bacteria. Conclusions: All the crude plant extracts possessed strong antioxidant and antimicrobial activities qualifying them as medicinal herbs that could be included in animal feed production.

Evidence shows that pulmonary problems in coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)may set off from vascular injury that progresses to physiological disturbances through a compromised gas exchange,following an infection with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus *** this process,inefficient gas exchange in the alveolar could precipitate silent nonclinical ***,patients with“silent hypoxemia”do not necessarily experience any breathing difficulty(dyspnea)at the early stage of COVID-19 while the disease *** a result,several asymptomatic,presymptomatic and patients with mild symptoms may escape quarantine measure and thus continue to spread the virus through ***,early diagnosis of“silent hypoxemia“,which attracts no clinical warnings,could be an important diagnostic measure to prevent acute respiratory distress syndrome from the risk of pulmonary failure among the presymptomatic and as a screening tool in the asymptomatic who are hitherto potential spreaders of the virus.

Automated Two-stage Conversion of Hourly Optimal DC Flow Solution to AC Power Flow

Conversion of hourly dispatch cases derived using DC optimal power flow(DCOPF)to AC power flow(ACPF)case is often challenging and requires arduous human analysis and *** paper proposes an automated two-stage approach to solve ACPF formulated from DCOPF dispatch *** first stage involved the use of the conventional Newton Raphson method to solve the ACPF from flat start,then ACPF cases that are unsolvable in the first stage are subjected to a hotstarting incremental method,based on homotopy continuation,in the second *** tasks such as the addition of reactive power compensation and tuning of voltage setpoints that typically require human intervention were automated using a criteriabased selection method and optimal power flow *** datasets with hourly dispatches for the 243-bus reduced WECC system were used to test the proposed *** algorithm was able to convert 100%of the first set of dispatch cases to solved ACPF *** the second dataset with suspect dispatch cases to represent an extreme conversion scenario,the algorithm created solved ACPF cases that satisfied a defined success criterion for 77.8%of the dispatch *** average run time for the hotstarting algorithm to create a solved ACPF case for a dispatch was less than 1 minute for the reduced WECC system.

Impacts of heavy metals on 1,2-dichloroethane biodegradation in co-contaminated soil

1,2-Dichloroethane （DCA）, a potential mutagen and carcinogen, is commonly introduced into the environment through its industrial and agricultural use. In this study, the impact of lead and mercury on DCA degradation in soil was investigated, owing to the complex co-contamination problem frequently encountered in most sites. 1,2-Dichloroethane was degraded readily in both contaminated loam and clay soils with the degradation rate constants ranging between 0.370-0.536 week-1 and 0.309-0.417 week-1, respectively. The presence of heavy metals have a negative impact on DCA degradation in both soil types, resulting in up to 24.11% reduction in DCA degradation within one week. Both biostimulation and treatment additives increased DCA degradation, with the best degradation observed upon addition of glucose and a combination of diphosphate salt and sodium chloride, leading to about 17.91% and 43.50% increase in DCA degradation, respectively. The results have promising potential for effective remediation of soils co-contaminated with chlorinated organics and heavy metals. However, the best bioremediation strategy will depend on the soil types, microbial population present in the soil matrices, nutrients availability and metal forms.

Aerobic dechlorination of cis- and trans-dichloroethenes by some indigenous bacteria isolated from contaminated sites in Africa

The innate toxicity of dichloroethenes(DCEs) and their tendency to be reduced to vinyl chloride(VC)(a known human carcinogen) is a cause for environmental concern. Aerobic bacteria capable of growth on cis- and trans-DCEs as sole carbon and energy sources were isolated by enrichment culture technique and identified to belong to the genera; Bacillus, Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter. Axenic and mixed cultures of the bacterial isolates utilized DCEs at concentrations above the maximum contaminant level allowable in drinking water by the Environmental Protection Agency. Their specific growth rate constant ranged significantly(P<0.05) between 0.346—0.552 and 0.461—0.667 d -1; while the maximum specific substrate utilization rate ranged significantly(P<0.05) between 20.01—29.79 and 31.40—42.83 nmol h -1 (mg of protein) -1 in cis- and trans-DCE, respectively. The optimum growth was observed at 30℃ and at a pH of 7.0 with up to 96% of the stoichiometric-expected chloride released. Serial adaptation positively affected the growth yields and dehalogenase activities of the organisms with multiple antibiotic patterns also demonstrated by the isolates. These findings therefore indicated the important roles that these organisms may play in the bioremediation of sites polluted with chlorinated ethene compounds in Africa.

Discontinuities effect on drilling condition and performance of selected rocks in Nigeria

The study examined joint discontinuity spacing effect on drilling condition and performance in selected rocks in llorin and Ibese areas, Nigeria. Five samples for each rock type （gneiss and limestone） were tested in the laboratory for chemical, physical and mechanical properties. Dip direction and joint spacing were measured using compass clinometers. The chemical composition was determined using X-ray Fluores- cence （XRF） spectrometer. The results show that gneiss has SiO2 of 61.88g and limestone has CaO content of 52.3g. The average dry density of gneiss and limestone are 2.6 and 2.39 g/cm^3, respectively. The uniaxial compressive strength of gneiss and limestone are 195 and 93.83 MPa, respectively. These rocks are classified as strong and moderately strong rock. Gneiss and limestone have mean joint discontinuity spacing of 0.79 and 0.25 m, which classified them as moderate and wide joint spacing respectively. Joint spacing was correlated with specific energy, bit wear and uniaxial compressive using Statistical Package for Social Science （SPSS）. The regression model has multiple coefficient of correlation of R^2 = 0.791 and R^2 =0.995 for gneiss and limestone, respectively. The variation in joint spacing could be attributed to spe- cific energy, bit wear and uniaxial compressive strength which affect drilling condition and performance. Ultimately, as joint spacing gets closer, the drilling velocity increases, drill string will be stable.

Mechanically stabilized earth(MSE)retaining walls are popular for highway bridge *** have precast concrete panels attached to earth *** panels are designed to have some lateral ***,in some cases,excessive movement and even complete dislocation of the panels have been *** this study,3-D numerical modeling involving an existing MSE wall was undertaken to investigate various wall *** effects of pore pressure,soil cohesion,earth reinforcement type and length,breakage/slippage of reinforcement and concrete strength,were *** showed that the wall movement is affected by soil pore pressure and reinforcement integrity and length,and unaffected by concrete *** cohesion has a minor effect,while the movement increased by 13–20 mm for flexible geogrid reinforced walls compared with the steel grid *** steel grid stresses were below yielding,while the geogrid experienced significant stresses without *** reinforcement may be used taking account of slippage resistance and wall *** steel grid is used,non-cohesive soil is recommended to minimize *** soil drainage is important for control of pore pressure.
