Physical and mechanical characteristics of composite briquette from coal and pretreated wood fines

Melina wood torrefied at 260℃ for 60 min was agglomerated with lean grade coal fines into composite briquettes using pitch as *** biomass(3%-20%)and coal fines(80%-97%)were blended together to produce the composite briquettes under a hydraulic press(28 MPa).The briquettes were cured at 300℃.Density,water resistance,drop to fracture,impact resistance,and cold crushing strength were evaluated for the composite *** proximate,ultimate,and calorific value analyses were carried out according to different ASTM *** studies were carried out using scanning electron microscope and electron probe microanalyzer equipped with energy dispersive *** Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer(FTIR)was used to obtain the functional groups in the raw materials and *** density of the composite briquettes ranged from 0.92 to 1.31 g/cm^(3) after *** with95%).The highest cold crushing strength of 4 MPa was obtained for briquettes produced from 97%coal fines and 3%torrefied *** highest drop to fracture(54 times/2 m)and impact resistance index(1350)were obtained for the sample produced from 97%coal and 3%torrefied *** fixed and elemental carbons of the briquettes showed a mild improvement compared to the raw *** peaks from FTIR spectra for the briquettes shows the presence of aromatic C=C bonds and phenolic OH *** composite briquettes with up to 20%torrefied biomass can all be useful as fuel for various applications.

Antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of African medicinal plants

Objective:To study antioxidant and antimicrobial properties ofTerminalia catappa,Psidium guajava,Alstonia boonei,Morinda lucida (M. lucida) andSpondias mombin leave extracts using ethanol, petroleum-ether and aqueous media. Methods: The free radical 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydroazyl was used to measure scavenging activities of extracts, while phenolic and flavonoid content were estimated by spectrophotometry. Antibacterial screening of extracts was done by determining zone of inhibition using disc diffusion method. Plant extracts were tested against five strains of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. After sterilization, the discs were loaded with concentrations of broad spectrum ciprofloxacin, and prepared extract solutions of different concentrations were refrigerated for 24 h. Determination of minimum inhibitory concentration of extracts in the screening assay was according to micro-broth dilution, while determination of minimum bactericidal concentration was carried out by agar diffusion. Results: The highest radical scavenging effect was found in petroleum ether extracts of all the plants withM. lucida andPsidium guajava having the highest and lowest values respectively. Aqueous solvent recorded highest phenolic content in all extracts with the exception ofM. lucida. Flavonoid content was extracted better fromAlstonia boonei andM. lucida with ethanol, while aqueous solvent extracted more from the other plants. With exception of extracts from petroleum ether, all others exhibited varying levels of antibacterial activities againstE. coli,Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Salmonella typhi,Vibrio cholera andStaphylococcus aureus. Conclusions:This study proved that all crude extracts showed strong antioxidant and antimicrobial potentials, which qualified them as nutraceuticals in fish feed production.

对采自尼日利亚南部城市阿贝奥库塔冈比亚按蚊复合体Anopheles gambiae complex的形态特征进行了研究。依据2005年8月至2006年7月灯诱捕获的364个冈比亚按蚊复合体标本,分别对它们的触角、翅、喙、前足、中足和后足6个部位的长度进行了测量,对月平均值进行回归分析,同时利用差异系数(coefficient of difference,CD)进行近缘分析。分析显示,各特征的长度平均值雨季大于旱季,但是回归分析表明长度变化与季节不显著相关(P>0.05)。差异系数分析结果表明,仅触角长度和翅长显示此复合体为两个不同的种群(CD>1.28),而其他特征值表明为同一种群。因此,该研究结果提示触角长度及翅长对冈比亚按蚊复合体近缘种的区分有重要参考价值。

Economic wood processing employs the use of industrial machines for cutting,shaping,milling,and sawing timber,thereby leading to the generation of high levels of *** data from empirical studies have categorized noise as an environmental hazard of global ***,noise exposure limits for different industries and all the industrial machines available has not been formally established as it presently exists in developed nations around the ***,this study assessed the daily exposure of sawmills workers to noise in Southwestern *** surveys were first carried out in Osun,Oyo,Ondo,Ekiti,Lagos,and Ogun States to select sawmills that were fully operational and fit for the *** fully functional sawmills in two cities of each State were eventually selected for data collection,making a total of 24 sawmills,while the Circular Machines(CM),Planer Machines(PM),and Band-saw Machines(BM)were the machines in each sawmill *** machines each of CM,PM,and BM were considered in each sawmill,making a total of forty-eight(48)machines each of CM,PM,and *** data were collected between 7 am and 7 pm each day for six days(between Monday and Saturday)using Extech 407732 sound level meter and all stabilized measurements were taken three times at different *** data collected were in three different periods:Machine No-work Period(NPm),Machine Idle Period(IPm),and Machine Working Period(WPm).A two–way Analysis of Variance(ANOVA)was carried out at P<0.05 to determine whether there is a significant difference in the sound level average before and after the break,for both the idle and working periods of the three machines *** was also done to determine whether there is a signifi-cant difference between the sound level average of the results collected during idle and working periods of the three *** Pollution Levels(Lnp)ranged from 83.20 dB(PM)to 107.65(BM)and 93.42(CM and PM)–116.00(BM)resp

Hepatic and reproductive toxicity of sub-chronic exposure to dichlorvos and lead acetate on male Wistar rats

Objective:To investigate the hepatic and reproductive toxicity of dichlorvos and lead acetate on male Wistar ***:Fifteen adult male Wistar rats(170-190 g)were randomly divided into three groups,with 5 rats in each *** 1 received 0.5 mL distilled water orally and served as the control group,while groups 2 and 3 were orally treated with 2 mg/kg body weight(b.w.)dichlorvos and 10 mg/kg *** acetate,respectively,for 55 *** sperm,serum follicle stimulating hormone(FSH),luteinizing hormone(LH),testosterone concentrations,testicular 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity(17β-HSD),androgen receptor expression,aspartate aminotransferase(AST),alanine aminotransferase(ALT),testicular oxidant and antioxidant enzymes were evaluated with standard ***:Sperm count,motility,morphology,FSH,LH,testosterone levels,17β-HSD,androgen receptor expression,and catalase activity were significantly reduced in the dichlorvos and lead acetate treated groups as compared with the control group(P<0.05).The liver AST,ALT activities and malondialdehyde concentration were significantly increased in the dichlorvos and lead acetate treated groups as compared with the control group(P<0.05).Conclusions:The reproductive and hepatic toxicity activities of dichlorvos and lead acetate in male Wistar rats are similar.

Imperatives of Health Psychologist in the Control and Management of HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa

The paper studied the imperatives of health psychologists in the control and management of HIV/ AIDS. HIV/AIDS is a relatively new disease, but has caused more deaths than any other disease in human history, and there is no known cure yet. Even though, HIV/AIDS is a death sentence, experts agreed that early detection, and early commencement of treatment may prolong the life of the patients, and that early detection may prevent or reduce the transmission of the virus. Early detection, commencement of treatment, and compliance with medical advice are the responsibilities of the health psychologist. This paper therefore, concludes that health psychologist is indispensable in effective control, and management of HIV/AIDS, and so recommends that awareness be created on the roles of health psychologists in this regard, through health education.
