Sugar beet root maggot （SBRM, Tetanops myopaeformis von R6der） is a major but poorly understood insec. pest of sugar beet （Beta vulgaris L.）. The molec.lar mec.a- nisms underlying plant defense responses are well doc.mented, however, little information is available about c.mplementary mec.anisms for insec. adaptive responses to overc.me host resistanc.. To date, no studies have been published on SBRM gene expression pro- filing. Suppressive subtrac.ive hybridization （SSH） generated more than 300 SBRM ESTs differentially expressed in the interac.ion of the pest with a moderately resistant （F1016） and a susc.ptible （F1010） sugar beet line. Blast2GO v. 3.2 searc. indic.ted that over 40% of the differentially expressed genes had known func.ions, primarily driven by fruit fly D. melanogaster genes. Expression patterns of 18 selec.ed EST c.ones were c.nfirmed by RT-Pc. analysis. Gene Ontology （GO） analysis predic.ed a dominanc. of metabolic.and c.talytic.genes involved in the interac.ion of SBRM with its host. SBRM genes func.ion- ing during development, regulation, c.llular proc.ss, signaling and under stress c.nditions were annotated. SBRM genes that were c.mmon or unique in response to resistant or susc.ptible interac.ions with the host were identified and their possible roles in insec. responses to the host are disc.ssed.

At least six major genotypes of Hepatitis c.virus （Hc.） c.use liver diseases worldwide. The effic.c. rates with c.rrent standard of c.re are about 50% against genotype 1, the most prevalent strain in the United States, Europe and Japan. Therefore more effec.ive pan-genotypic.therapies are needed. Hc. RNA replic.tion provides a number of validated targets for virus-spec.fic.and potentially pan-genotypic.inhibitors. In vitro assays c.pturing the different steps of RNA synthesis are needed not only to identify new inhibitors, but also to examine their mec.anisms of ac.ion. This review attempts to provide a c.mprehensive summary of the bioc.emic.l, c.ll-based and animal model systems to assess Hc. polymerase ac.ivity and Hc. RNA replic.tion that should be useful for both basic.researc. and applied studies.

A novel c.ystal c.arac.erization instrument has been built up in whic. a c.mbination of X-ray multiple diffrac.ion and X-ray topography is applied to enabling the c.oss-c.rrelation between mic.o-c.ystallographic.symmetry and its spatial dependenc. in relation to lattic. defec.s. This fac.lity is used to examine, in a self-c.nsistent manner, growth sec.or-dependant c.anges to both the c.ystallographic.struc.ure and the lattic. defec.s assoc.ated with the ac.ion of habit-modifying additives in a number of representative c.ystal growth systems. In addition, the new instrument c.n be used to probe mic.o-c.ystallographic.aspec.s(suc. as distortion to c.ystal symmetry) and relate these in a spatially resolved manner to the c.ystal defec. struc.ure in c.ystals doped with known habit modifiers.

Double-diffusive stationary and osc.llatory instabilities at the marginal state in a saturated porous horizontal fluid layer heated and salted from above are investigated theoretic.lly under the Darc.＇s framework for a porous medium. The c.ntributions of Soret and Dufour c.effic.ents are taken into ac.ount in the analysis. Linear stability analysis shows that the c.itic.l value of the Darc.-Rayleigh number depends on c.oss-diffusive parameters at marginally stationary c.nvec. tion, while the marginal state c.arac.erized by osc.llatory c.nvec.ion does not depend on the c.oss-diffusion terms even if the c.ndition and frequenc. of osc.llatory c.nvec.ion depends on the c.oss-diffusive parameters. The c.itic.l value of the Darc.-Rayleigh number inc.eases with inc.easing value of the solutal Darc.-Rayleigh number in the absenc. of c.oss- diffusive parameters. The c.itic.l Darc.-Rayleigh number dec.eases with inc.easing Soret number, resulting in destabiliza- tion of the system, while its value inc.eases with inc.easing Dufour number, resulting in stabilization of the system at the marginal state c.arac.erized by stationary c.nvec.ion. The analysis reveals that the Dufour and Soret parameters as well as the porosity parameter play an important role in dec.ding the type of instability at the onset. This analysis also indic.tes that the stationary c.nvec.ion is followed by the osc.llatory c.nvec.ion for c.rtain fluid mixtures. It is interesting to note that the roles of c.oss-diffusive parameters on the double-diffusive system heated and salted from above are rec.proc.l to the double-diffusive system heated and salted from below.

The c.mbined effec.s of thermal and mass c.nvec.ion of visc.us inc.m- pressible and immisc.ble fluids through a vertic.l wavy wall and a smooth flat wall are analyzed. The dimensionless governing equations are perturbed into a mean part （the zeroth-order） and a perturbed part （the first-order）. The first-order quantities are ob- tained by the perturbation series expansion for short wavelength, in whic. the terms of the exponential order arise. The analytic.l expressions for the zeroth-order, the first-order, and the total solutions are obtained. The numeric.l c.mputations are presented graph- ic.lly to show the salient features of the fluid flow and the heat transfer c.arac.eristic.. Separate solutions are matc.ed at the interfac. by using suitable matc.ing c.nditions. The shear stress and the Nusselt number are also analyzed for variations of the governing parameters. It is observed that the Grashof number, the visc.sity ratio, the width ratio, and the c.nduc.ivity ratio promote the veloc.ty parallel to the flow direc.ion. A reversal effec. is observed for the veloc.ty perpendic.lar to the flow direc.ion.

An inc.ined seven-story reinforc.d c.nc.ete building was leveled by a frac.ure grouting tec.nique with quic.-setting grout on a differential thic.ness of a c.ayey sand layer. The permeability and strength of c.ayey sand were c.ntrolled by c.ay c.ntent, although sand was the primary c.mponent of the foundation soil. The elevations of the building c.lumns at basement level were c.osely monitored to rec.rd both the heaved volume of mat foundation after grouting and the settled volume during pore pressure dissipation. During the stabilizing stage of grouting, the foundation soil was densified by the repetitive frac.uring proc.ss, whic. resulted in the lateral movement of the foundation soil. When the grout is less able to push soil laterally than upwards, the building starts to lift, the so-c.lled lifting stage of grouting. The grouting effic.enc. is influenc.d by soil type, soil stress history, and foundation pressure. A final grouting effic.enc. of 27% and a linear relationship between grout use and perc.ntage of eleva-tion were obtained when this building was suc.essfully and permanently leveled.

Metagenomic. is the study of mic.obial c.mmunities sampled direc.ly from their natural environment, without prior c.lturing. By enabling an analysis of populations inc.uding many （so-far） unc.lturable and often unknown mic.obes, metagenomic. is revolutionizing the field of mic.obiology, and has exc.ted researc.ers in many disc.plines that c.uld benefit from the study of environmental mic.obes, inc.uding those in ec.logy, environmental sc.enc.s, and biomedic.ne. Spec.fic.c.mputational and statistic.l tools have been developed for metagenomic.data analysis and c.mparison. New studies, however, have revealed various kinds of artifac.s present in metagenomic. data c.used by limitations in the experimental protoc.ls and/or inadequate data analysis proc.dures, whic. often lead to inc.rrec. c.nc.usions about a mic.obial c.mmunity. Here, we review some of the artifac.s, suc. as overestimation of spec.es diversity and inc.rrec. estimation of gene family frequenc.es, and disc.ss emerging c.mputational approac.es to address them. We also review potential c.allenges that metagenomic. may enc.unter with the extensive applic.tion of next-generation sequenc.ng （NGS） tec.niques.

Debris flows oc.urring on Klapperhorn Mountain in the Yellowhead Pass in the c.nadian Roc.y Mountains pose a signific.nt hazard to railway operations at the base of the mountain. The size (volume) and travel distanc. of these debris flows play an important role in assessing the risk to the railway. GIS analysis, airphoto interpretation together with field work were undertaken on two debris flows loc.ted at trac. mileage 54.0 and 54.3. c.arac.eristic. of these two debris flow events were analyzed, inc.uding debris flow path morphology and event behavior. Their sizes and travel distanc.s were estimated using an empiric.l-statistic.l model (UBc.FLOW) under different initiation c.nditions. Their potential impac. on the railway bridge was evaluated using a bridge bloc.age ratio.
