A higher-dimensional model of the nucleon-nucleon central potential

Based on a theory of extra dimensional confinement of quantum particles [E. R. Hedin, Physics Essays, 2012, 25（2）： 177], a simple model of a nucleon nucleon （NN） central potential is derived which quantitatively reproduces tile radial profile of other models, without adjusting any free pa- rameters. It is postulated that a higher-dimensional simple harmonic oscillator confining potential localizes particles into three-dimensional （3D） space, but allows for an ewmescent penetration of the particles into two higtmr spatial dimensions. Producing an effect identical with the relativistic quan- tum phenolnenon of zitterbewegung, the higher-dimensional oscillations of amplitude h（mc） call be alternatively viewed as a localized curvature of 3D space back and forth into the higher dimensions. The overall spatial curvature is proportional to the particle＇s extra-dimensional ground state wave function in tile higher-dimensional harmonic confining potential well. Minimizing the overlapping curvature （proportional to the energy） of two particles in proximity to each other, subject to the constraint that for the two particles to occupy the same spatial location one of them must be excited into the 1st excited state of the harmonic potential well, gives the desired NN potential. Specifying only the imcleon masses, the resulting potential well and repulsive core reproduces the radial profile of several published NN central potential models. In addition, the predicted height of the repulsive core, when used to estimate the maximum neutron star mass, matches well with the best estimates from relativistic theory incorporating standard nuclear matter equations of state. Nucleon spin, Coulomb interactions, and internal nucleon structure are not considered in the theory as presented in this article.

Next-Generation Tools to Study Autonomic Regulation In Vivo

The recent development of tools to decipher the intricacies of neural networks has improved our understanding of brain function. Optogenetics allows one to assess the direct outcome of activating a geneticallydistinct population of neurons. Neurons are tagged with light-sensitive channels followed by photo-activation with an appropriate wavelength of light to functionally activate or silence them, resulting in quantifiable changes in the periphery. Capturing and manipulating activated neuron ensembles, is a recently-designed technique to permanently label activated neurons responsible for a physiological function and manipulate them. On the other hand, neurons can be transfected with genetically-encoded Ca2^+ indicators to capture the interplay between them that modulates autonomic end-points or somatic behavior. These techniques work with millisecond temporal precision. In addition, neurons can be manipulated chronically to simulate physiological aberrations by transfecting designer G-protein-coupled receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs. In this review, we elaborate on the fundamental concepts and applications of these techniques in research.

The Current Immune Function of Hepatic Dendritic Cells

While only a small percentage of the liver as dendritic cells, they play a major role in the regulation of liver immunity. Four major types of dendritic cell subsets include myeloid CD8α^-B220^-, lymphoid CD8α^＋B220^-, plasmacytoid CD8α^-B220^＋, and natural killer dendritic cell with CD8α^-B220^-NK1.1^＋ phenotype. Although these subsets have slightly different characteristics, they are all poor naive T cell stimulators. In exchange for their reduced capacity for allostimulation, hepatic DCs are equipped with an enhanced ability to secrete cytokines in response to TLR stimulation. In addition, they have increased level of phagocytosis. Both of these traits suggest hepatic DC as part of the innate immune system. With such a high rate of exposure to the dietary and commensal antigens, it is important for the hepatic DCs to have an enhanced innate response while maintaining a tolerogenic state to avoid chronic inflammation. Only upon secondary infectivity does the hepatic DC activate memory T cells for rapid eradication of recurring pathogen. On the other hand, overly tolerogenic characteristics of hepatic DC may be responsible for the increase prevalence of autoimmunity or liver malignancies.

A genomic approach to active surveillance： a step toward precision medicine

In the last 25 years, Prostate Specific Antigen （PSA） screening has resulted ina large gap between the likelihood of being diagnosed with and of dying of prostate cancer, leading to the clinical problems of overdiagnosis and overtreatment. Despite the favorable outcomes reported for active surveil- lance, its clinical use is limited, with 〉90% of men in the US diagnosed with potentially indol- ent disease undergoing immediate treatment with radiation or surgery. We have designed a novel strategy of molecular profiling of prostate cancers, allowing an assessment of tumor aggres- siveness to be based on tumor tissue obtained at biopsy.

Timed-pNets： a communication behavioural semantic model for distributed systems

This paper presents an approach to build a communication behavioural semantic model for heterogeneous distributed systems that include synchronous and asynchronous communications. Since each node of such system has its own physical clock, it brings the challenges of correctly specifying the system time constraints. Based on the logical clocks proposed by Lamport, and CCSL proposed by Aoste team in INRIA, as well as pNets from Oasis team in INRIA, we develop timed-pNets to model communication behaviours for distributed systems. Timed-pNets are tree style hierarchical structures. Each node is associated with a timed specification which consists of a set of logical clocks and some relations on clocks. The leaves are represented by timed-pLTSs. Non-leaf nodes （called timed-pNets nodes） are synchronisation devices that synchronize the behaviours of subnets （these subnets can be leaves or non-leaf nodes）. Both timed-pLTSs and timed-pNets nodes can be translated to timed specifications. All these notions and methods are illustrated on a simple use-case of car insertion from the area of intelligent transportation systems （ITS）. In the end the TimeSquare tool is used to simulate and check the validity of our model.

Microparticles with tunable,cell-like properties for quantitative acoustic mechanophenotyping

Mechanical properties of biological cells have been shown to correlate with their biomolecular state and function,and therefore methods to measure these properties at scale are of *** microfluidic technologies can measure the mechanical properties of cells at rates over 20,000 cells/s,which is more than four orders of magnitude faster than conventional ***,precise and repeatable means to calibrate and test these new tools remain lacking,since cells themselves are by nature ***,microfluidic tools use rigid polymer microspheres for calibration because they are widely available in cell-similar sizes,but conventional microspheres do not fully capture the physiological range of other mechanical properties that are equally important to device function(e.g.,elastic modulus and density).Here,we present for the first time development of monodisperse polyacrylamide microparticles with both tunable elasticity and tunable *** these size,elasticity,and density tunable particles,we characterized a custom acoustic microfluidic device that makes single-cell measurements of mechanical *** then applied the approach to measure the distribution of the acoustic properties within samples of human leukocytes and showed that the system successfully discriminates lymphocytes from other *** initial demonstration shows how the tunable microparticles with properties within the physiologically relevant range can be used in conjunction with microfluidic devices for efficient high-throughput measurements of mechanical properties at single-cell resolution.
