Evaluation of the Essential Oil of <i>Citrus paradisi</i>as an Alternative Treatment against <i>Candida albicans</i>

Introduction: The World Health Organization establishes that 80% of the world’s population uses traditional medicine for their primary care, because they contain compounds responsible for their properties. Objective: To evaluate the antifungal effect of the essential oil of Citrus paradisi against C. albicans and the cytotoxic effect in three cell lines in vitro. Methods: The phytochemical characterization of the oil was carried out by chemical methods and Gas chromatography (GC-MS) and the antifungal effect against C. albicans (ATCC 90029) was evaluated by the Kirby-Bauer method, which evaluated concentrations of 0.75 - 20 μg/mL and compared with nystatin 100,000 Ul/mL as a positive control. The percentage of the relative inhibitory effect was calculated. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined at 24 hours. Moreover, the cytotoxic effect on C. albicans and cell lines was determined by the colorimetric MTT tetrazolium assay. Finally, the antifungal effect against Candida strains isolated from clinical samples was evaluated at a concentration of 20 μg/mL. Results: The essential oil showed an antifungal effect with a percentage of inhibition of 123%. The MIC was 2.5 μg/mL, and the cytotoxicity index was 5.44 μg/mL for C. albicans. The IC50 values were 21.060, 9.482 and 4.176 μg/mL for Vero E6, J774A.1 and MDBK cells respectively. Conclusion: These results show the use of C. paradisi essential oil as an alternative treatment in oral antifungal therapy, it is beneficial due to its antifungal effect and its low toxicity on cell cultures.

Fluorescence as a Tool to Study Lipid-Protein Interactions: The Case of α-Synuclein

During the past 20 years there has been a remarkable growth in the use of fluorescence in the biological sciences. Fluorescence is now a dominant methodology used extensively in biochemistry, biophysics, biotechnology, medical diagnostics, flow cytometry, DNA sequencing and genetic analysis to name a few. It is one of the most powerful methods to study protein folding, dynamics, assembly and interactions as well as membrane structure. α-Synuclein belongs to the class of intrinsically disordered proteins lacking of a well-folded structure under physiological conditions. The conversion of α-synuclein from a soluble monomer to an insoluble fibril may underlie the neurodegeneration associated with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Although the exact mechanism of α-synuclein toxicity is still unknown, it has been proposed that disturbs membrane structure, leading to increased membrane permeability and eventual cell death. This review highlights the significant role played by fluorescence techniques in unraveling the nature of interactions between α-synuclein and membranes and its implications in PD.

Right iliac fossa pain remains a challenge for clinicians, since it requires considering several differential diagnoses. Acute appendicitis continues to be one of the most important diagnoses to confirm or to rule out in acute abdominal pain, due to the associated morbidity and mortality. Currently, imaging studies contribute to increase diagnostic certainty, but sometimes reveal unexpected findings, which may further complicate the diagnosis and therapeutic decisions. We present the case of an unusual image finding in the right iliac fossa, a calcification suggestive of gallstone ileus, in the context of an acute abdomen with an unusual transoperative finding, whose definitive diagnosis by pathology, was also rare.

Leukemoid Reaction and Malignant Ascites in a Renal Carcinoma with Sarcomatoid Differentiation. Unusual Case Report and Literature Review

Renal cell carcinoma represents the 16th cause of death by cancer. It is one of the most frequent kidney tumors. This tumor could behave as a good mimicker, and is frequently associated with paraneoplastic syndromes. Metastases to peritoneum, mesentery or omentum are very rare. Sarcomatoid renal cell carcinoma is a high-grade undifferentiated component that can be found in any subtypes of renal cell carcinoma, and is associated with an aggressive behavior and a poor prognosis. We present the case of a 59-year-old male, diabetic patient, with nephron preserved left nephrectomy through lumbotomy seven years ago, upper pole renal carcinoma, admitted to the emergency department with indeterminate shock. He underwent a diagnostic laparoscopy and then open surgery due to findings where a greater omentum subtotal infarction. Omentum microscopic examination resulted in vaguely differentiated neoplasia, with sarcomatoid like cells, highly positive to CD10 inmunolabeling. Even though renal cell carcinomas have unusual clinical presentations, this case is unique because of the convergence of extremely rare manifestations such as the combination of malignant ascites, peritoneal carcinomatosis, and contralateral suprarenal gland metachronous metastases at the major omentum with paraneoplastic syndrome type leukemoid reaction;which have not been reported previously in literature.

Morphological determinants of jumping performance in the Iberian green frog

Predation is one of the main selective forces in nature, frequently selecting potential prey for developing escape strategies. Escape ability is typically influenced by several morphological parameters, such as morphology of the locomotor appendices, muscular capacity, body mass, or fluctuating asymmetry, and may differ between sexes and age classes. In this study, we tested the relationship among these variables and jumping performance in 712 Iberian green frogs Pelophylax perezi from an urban population. The results suggest that the main determinant of jumping capacity was body size (explaining 48% of variance). Larger frogs jumped farther, but jumping performance reached an asymptote for the largest frogs. Once controlled by structural body size, the heaviest frogs jumped shorter distances, suggesting a trade-off between fat storage and jumping performance. Relative hind limb length also determined a small but significant percentage of variance (2.4%) in jumping performance-that is, the longer the hind limbs, the greater the jumping capacity. Juveniles had relatively shorter and less muscular hind limbs than adults (for a given body size), and their jumping performance was poorer. In our study population, the hind limbs of the frogs were very symmetrical, and we found no effect of fluctuating asymmetry on jumping performance. Therefore, our study provides evidence that jumping performance in frogs is not only affected by body size, but also by body mass and hind limb length, and differ between age classes.

Genomic prediction(GP)has become a valuable tool for predicting the performance of selection candidates for the next breeding cycle.A vast majority of statistical linear models on which GP is based rely on the assumption of normality of the residuals and therefore on the response variable *** this study,we propose to use Bayesian regularized quantile regression(BRQR)in the context of GP;the model has been successfully used in other research *** evaluated the prediction ability of the proposed model and compared it with the Bayesian ridge regression(BRR;equivalent to genomic best linear unbiased predictor,GBLUP).In addition,BLUP can be used with pedigree information obtained from the coefficient of coancestry(ABLUP).We have found that the prediction ability of BRQR is comparable to that of BRR and,in some cases,better;it also has the potential to efficiently deal with outliers.A program written in the R statistical package is available as Supplementary material.

Intestinal microbiota in health and disease: Role of bifidobacteria in gut homeostasis

The pool of microbes inhabiting our body is known as “microbiota” and their collective genomes as “microbiome”. The colon is the most densely populated organ in the human body, although other parts, such as the skin, vaginal mucosa, or respiratory tract, also harbour specific microbiota. This microbial community regulates some important metabolic and physiological functions of the host, and drives the maturation of the immune system in early life, contributing to its homeostasis during life. Alterations of the intestinal microbiota can occur by changes in composition (dysbiosis), function, or microbiota-host interactions and they can be directly correlated with several diseases. The only disease in which a clear causal role of a dysbiotic microbiota has been demonstrated is the case of Clostridium difficile infections. Nonetheless, alterations in composition and function of the microbiota have been associated with several gastrointestinal diseases (inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer, or irritable bowel syndrome), as well as extra-intestinal pathologies, such as those affecting the liver, or the respiratory tract (e.g., allergy, bronchial asthma, and cystic fibrosis), among others. Species of Bifidobacterium genus are the normal inhabitants of a healthy human gut and alterations in number and composition of their populations is one of the most frequent features present in these diseases. The use of probiotics, including bifidobacteria strains, in preventive medicine to maintain a healthy intestinal function is well documented. Probiotics are also proposed as therapeutic agents for gastrointestinal disorders and other pathologies. The World Gastroenterology Organization recently published potential clinical applications for several probiotic formulations, in which species of lactobacilli are predominant. Cell Layout Application in Product Recovery： A Lean Proposal to Increase Efficiency in Remanufacturing

The growing demand of organizations for alternative technologies to reduce environmental damage and meet new legislative issues brought greater focus to the activities of product recovery. One way to recover and revalue a product is by remanufacturing, which is defined as the process of recovering a product to its original specifications, promoting the reuse of materials and improving its quality and functionality. However, the context of the remanufacturing industry faces difficulties and is considered unstable and inefficient if compared to manufacturing. In this sense, this paper aims to propose a cell layout based on lean concepts and adapted to the context of remanufacturing, aiming to minimize waste, reduce variability and thereby increase efficiency. The cell layout proposal was based on a literature review and researchers＇ practical experience in the area. This layout can provide the flexibility to handle the variations inherent in the context of remanufacturing, boosting product recovery and related environmental issues.

Validating Governance Performance Indicators for Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management in the Southeast Region of Cuba

The importance of evaluating the success of policies developed to effectively manage coastal and marine resource use is well documented. However, few frameworks exist that allow for a comparative examination of existing policy instruments, as opposed to specific initiatives, which assess governance performance aimed at addressing issues arising in the coastal zone. This paper describes the process and findings for evaluating the feasibility of a modified Coastal Sustainability Standard (CoSS) framework that seeks to measure the effectiveness of individual planning instruments within overlapping spatial boundaries in the landward and marine areas in the southeast region of Cuba. Through workshops conducted in Santiago de Cuba and Guamá municipalities with key representatives involved in coastal management and planning, the utility of the framework was assessed using the main instruments of territorial planning in Cuba, namely integrated river basin management, territorial planning in coastal municipalities and marine and coastal management. While, the findings suggest that the modified CoSS framework can be used to assess the effectiveness of these planning instruments in the region, and workshop participants also suggested improvements to better match its use to the characteristics of the study region.
