Prognosis of Misgav-Ladach Caesarean Sections in an African Environment: Case of the Banfora Regional Hospital in Burkina Faso about 110 Cases

Objective: To analyze the caesarean section prognosis aspects according to Misgav-Ladach versus classical technique in the regional hospital of Banfora. Materials and Methods: This is about a randomized clinical test of 2 groups carried in the regional hospital in Banfora on a two-month period from 1st October to 30 November 2015. In the first group, 66 patients had benefited from a caesarean section by the Misgav-Ladach technique. In the control group, 44 patients had benefited from a caesarean in the conventional technique. Were included in our sample all patients having benefited from a cesarean in the study site during the study period and who had consented to participate in the study. All patients were followed until the postpartum healing of the surgical wound. All prognostic elements have been compared. The results were analyzed with Epi Info 3.5.1 software and the significance level was set at 5%. Results: The indications for cesarean section were dominated by maternal causes in 70 cases (63.6%). The average duration of the surgical procedure was 27.98 mm for Misgav-Ladach technique versus 28.27 mm for the conventional technique (p = 0.49). The evaluation of blood loss by the change in hemoglobin pre- and post-operative did not find statistically significant differences between the two techniques (p = 0.6). The evaluation of the number of intraoperative suture used, was in favor of the technique of Misgav-Ladach (p = 0.007). The evolutionary trend in the intensity of postoperative pain was in favor of the technique of Misgav-Ladach. The average time of wound healing was 16.33 days for group 1 versus 21, 27 days for group 2 (p = 0.0001). Postoperative morbidity was greater with the conventional technique in comparison to Misgav-Ladach’s (p = 0.046). There was no statistically significant differences in length of hospital stay (p = 0.056). Conclusion: The Misgav-Ladach cesarean section reduces operative risk. Opilia amentacea (Opiliaceae) is a woody plant with multiple medicinal claimed effects. The present study aimed to assess the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of the decoction and macerate extracts from the leaves of Opilia amentacea. Moreover, acute toxicity and phytochemical analysis were performed. The acute toxicity was evaluated on NMRI mice at 2000 mg/kg bw. The anti-inflammatory activity was studied using the carrageenan-induced mouse paw edema and the lipoxygenase inhibition assay. The radical scavenging (DPPH and ABTS), ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and lipid peroxidation (LPO) assays were used to measure the antioxidant capacity of the extracts. Qualitative and quantitative methods served for identifying and quantifying the extract’s phytoconstituents. The decoction demonstrated low acute toxicity;the lethal dose was therefore estimated to be superior to 2000 mg/kg bw. The extracts significantly reduced the mouse paw’s thickness at 600 mg/kg bw. The extracts developed weak radical scavenging and lipid peroxidation inhibitory effects. However, the macerate showed a high ability (664.90 ± 0.71 mol Ascorbic Acid Equivalent/g dry extract) to reduce the ferric ions. Saponins, sterols, triterpenes, and flavonoids were qualitatively detected in the two extracts. Total phenolics (TP) and total flavonoids (TF) were found abundant in the extracts, especially the decoction (TP content (TPC) = 94.03 ± 2.66 mg GAE/g;TF content (TFC) = 35.05 ± 0.32 mg QE/g). Strong positive correlations existed between ferric-reducing capacity and TPC (r = 0.959) for the macerate, while TFC was mainly involved in the DPPH radical scavenging of the two extracts. Instead, most correlations were negative between the polyphenol compounds and the anti-inflammatory assays. The results indicate potent in vivo anti-inflammatory and in vitro antioxidant effects of the aqueous extracts from the leaves of Opilia amentacea. The use of wastewater in urban agriculture has been promoted as an alternative to water scarcity and as a means to increase soil fertilizer. However, the use of wastewater in urban agriculture raises major public health concerns, mainly due to the often high concentration of pathogenic micro-organisms. Waterborne parasites are a major health concern in this regard, especially in endemic areas, mainly due to the high environmental resistance of eggs/cysts combined with a low infectious dose. In this study, the parasitological risk to vegetables producers in ouagadougou using polluted water was evaluated through the quantitative microbiological risk analysis method. For this purpose, the search for and quantification of viable parasite eggs and cysts in irrigation water was coupled with epidemiological surveillance of vegetables producers in ouagadougou. Protozoa and helminths belonging to 9 species were recorded and samples analyzed. These include Ancylostoma sp., Ascaris lumbricoides, tapeworm’s sp, Strongyloides stercoralis, Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia. Despite the variability of isolated parasitic species, Ancylostoma sp. eggs were common and severe to all types of water. Moreover, epidemiological approach showed that there were more parasitic species found in irrigation water and also other parasitic species circulating among vegetable farmers. In addition, there is no statistical significant association between the type of water used for irrigation and the carried parasites by vegetable gardeners. However, contamination of the groups using the raw wastewater is once higher than those using well water. When one is interested in the groups using treated wastewater as a source of irrigation, these risks of contaminations are halved. The objective is to study the knowledge that albinos have on skin cancers, and their attitudes in terms of primary prevention and the screening practices for skin cancers in Burkina Faso. Methods: This is a cross-sectional and descriptive KAP study conducted from May 18th to July 7th 2015. It involved albinos aged at least 12 years. Their general knowledge, prevention attitudes and screening practices were considered. Results: All the responding albinos had already heard about skin cancers. Their main source of information was health workers (65.6%). They were showing at least two risk factors (99.2%) but only 68.3% affirmed having already undergone screening for skin cancer. Ignorance of the existence of screening was the main obstacle to it (16/26). The prevention means used was sun avoidance, the use of cream and protection clothing respectively in 84%, 41.5% and 51.2%. The skin lesions found were hyperpigmented macules (77.8%) then actinic keratosis (40.7%) and finally cheilitis (35.8%). We detected 4 cases of skin cancers confirmed by biopsy. Conclusion: Risk factors are frequent. Participation to screening is still insignificant. A lot is still to be done to extend the protection means. A good awareness-raising campaign and the accessibility to protection means remain for all, the best defense in the fight against skin cancers in albinos.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) belongs to a group of congenital osteoporosis which hallmark feature is “affecting skeleton, increasing bone fragility that fracture easily and decreasing bone density due to quantitative and/or qualita-tive abnormalities”. We report a female sibling’s involvement in 3 cases with probable recessive inheritance pattern. Only female aged between 5 and 13 years were affected with skeletal lesions in the lower limbs. The boy of this family had no skeletal or extra-skeletal lesions. Their parents had no affection and no bond of consanguinity. The observed malformations can be classified as type V or VI according to Sillence’s clinical classification. Lack of genetic test in our context has limited accuracy of the diagnosis as new data evoke a genetic classification into 12 types that leading an effective therapeutic management.

Severe anemia during pregnancy remains an acute maternal health problem in low income countries and its management is a challenge. This study aimed to analyze the characteristics of hospitalized pregnant women with severe anemia and issue of the management in a regional hospital of a low income country. Material and Methods: This was a retrospective descriptive study from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2008, at a regional hospital maternity. Data of the 283 pregnancy severe anemia cases have been analyzed using usual Pearson’s Chi square test or Fisher’s exact test. Results: Of the 283 women with pregnancy severe anemia, 98% were illiterate, 98% were household women;majority were in the third trimester (64%);41% had no previous delivery;49% did not had antenatal care. There were no statistics association between hemoglobin values stage and gestational age, gravidity and parity. During the hospitalization, from the 283 women with pregnancy severe anemia, deliveries occurred on 22.6%;abortion on 1%. From the 64 deliveries, 45.3% were alive preterm birth, 20.3% preterm stillbirth, 25.0% at term birth and 9.4% at term stillbirth. Between the 45 alive babies, 91% were low birth weight. In global, from the 283 women, mortality rate was 2.8%. Conclusion:?Severe anemia during pregnancy results in maternal mortality, preterm, low birth and stillbirth even between hospitalized women. As most of the pregnancy anemia risk factors are chronic poverty related factors, intervention must be focused on prevention including health pregnant women iron supplementation and adequate nutritional diet promoting at both health facilities and community level.

Background: Herpes Simplex Virus type-2 (HSV-2) infection is one of the most common worldwide sexually transmitted and female sex workers are most at risk for these infections. Beside HSV-2, Human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV) is one of these infections with a high risk of sexual transmission. HTLV-1 causes T-cell leukaemia and myelopathy. Little is known about the HSV-2, HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 infections among female sex workers in West Africa in general, and particularly in Burkina Faso. The aim of this study aimed to estimate HSV-2 and HTLV-1/2 seroprevalence among female sex workers, in ouagadougou in order to inform HIV prevention programs. Methods: Archived sera samples of a biological and behavioral cross-sectional study among female sex workers (FSWs) in ouagadougou were tested for HSV-2 and HTLV-1/2. Sera samples collected from February to May 2013 were previously tested for HIV and syphilis and stored with participants’ additional consent for further infection testing. Antibodies against HSV-2 and HTLV-1/2 detection tests were performed using Enzyme-Linked Immuno-Sorbent Assay (ELISA) methods. Results: HSV-2 seroprevalence was approximately 75.7% (95% CI: 70.8-79.9) among FSWs. It ranged from 69.3% among FSWs under 24 years of age, to 88.5% among those who were at least 30 years old. Furthermore, HSV-2 seroprevalence was high among FSW with no formal education (87.7%) and decreased significantly among those with at least primary education (76.0%) and others with secondary education and above (64.9%). Regarding HTLV-1/2, 11.2% (95% CI: 8.3 - 15.1) of FSWs were positive. By age group, 11.8% were positive among FSWs under 25 years of age;15.2% among those 25 to 29 years of age, and 5.8% among those over 30 years of age. Conclusion: HSV-2 and HTLV-1&2 infections are common among FSWs, which confirms the need for effective and preventive interventions such as sex education and early screening.

In this work, we have modeled and simulated the electrical performance of CIGS thin-film solar cell using one-dimensional simulation software (SCAPS-1D). Starting from a baseline model that reproduced the experimental results, the properties of the absorber layer and the CIGS/Mo interface have been explored, and the requirements for high-efficiency CIGS solar cell were proposed. Simulation results show that the band-gap, acceptor density, defect density are crucial parameters that affect the performance of the solar cell. The best conversion efficiency is obtained when the absorber band-gap is around 1.2 eV, the acceptor density at 1016 cm−3 and the defect density less than 1014 cm−3. In addition, CIGS/Mo interface has been investigated. It appears that a thin MoSe2 layer reduces recombination at this interface. An improvement of 1.5 to 2.5 mA/cm2 in the current density (Jsc) depending on the absorber thickness is obtained.

Colorless, incessant radon gas is notably the second most important cause of lung cancer after smoking in smokers and the first cause in non-smokers. Having little effect in the atmosphere, radon gas accumulates in confined spaces. Therefore, the determination of radon concentrations inside residential buildings is very important to improve the health of the inhabitants. The objective of this research is to measure the concentration of radon in indoor air in residential areas of the city of Kaya and to assess the absorbed dose, the effective dose and the relative risk of lung cancer. In this study, the CORENTIUM AIR THINGS digital radon detector is used to determine the radon concentration in twenty-one houses in Kaya. The CORENTIUM AIR THINGS digital radon detector has been placed in each residential building for a minimum period of one week and the concentration values are read every 24 hours. This research revealed that the average concentration of radon was 28.47 Bq/m3 in the residential areas of Kaya. The radon concentration in a house has been found to exceed 100 Bq/m3, which is the level authorized by the World Health Organization (WHO). In the long term, the absorbed dose varies from 0.118 mSv to 4.975 mSv and the effective dose is between 0.229 mSv and 12.002 mSv. In the short term, the absorbed dose varies between 0.095 mSv to 5.001 mSv and the effective dose is between 0.283 mSv to 11.935 mSv. The mean lung cancer relative risk (CPRR) from indoor exposure was 1.026. There is a need to raise awareness among the population of the city of Kaya on this issue and to take measures to reduce radon in homes when the concentrations are above the limit recommended by the WHO.
